No matter what, they all would have to live with the guilt stemming from Rickys death. And it just so happened that Doughboy was killed two weeks afterwards.
That's why John Singleton made her character because there are actual mother's like that who favors one child the most because of who their father was, and how it takes a toll on how they end up
Every man has to choose & go his own way. To me Tre made the right move. I believe in putting things in Gods hands & not taking revenge. That said I respect the choice Doughboy made & I understand why he did it
I think the reason Doeboy gets out of the car and murders Ferris at point blank range is because he is desperate to feel the satisfaction he believes getting revenge for his brother will bring him. Then you can see the puzzlement in his face right after he shoots him when he feels no different. I think the theme that was trying to be conveyed by the scene is that revenge and violence achieves nothing. It doesn’t make people feel better to get revenge, it just leaves them feeling empty and continues the cycle of misery. Truly one of the best movies of all time.

What I really loved about this scene isn't that Tre just dutifully listens...he STILL sneaks off to go with Doughboy and Monsta to get revenge. But the impact of the father is felt in the car...the weight of that presence in his life, the lessons...he realizes this is a life altering thing that's going to happen and not in a good way...and rightfully asks to get out. And Doughboy, to his credit, obliges. Teenagers will test your gangsta no matter how well you raise them. But the idea is, if you raise them right, eventually they make the right decisions BECAUSE of how you raised them.

Very true. I think that’s largely because the characters were all humanized. For example, when the guys were eating and just being young people chilling out. Notice how the dude said he’s going to his lady’s house and his homeboy is going home with his pop. They were still kids themselves. Very heavy scene and movie overall.
It's even more heartbreaking to see that Ricky got a 710 on his SAT, which was more than enough to get into the Scolarship he wanted to be in. He never got the chance to live that honored life 😔

The fact that Cube only says 5 words in this entire scene and yet still gets his attitude across perfectly goes to show you how great the acting in this movie is.
Tre's dad when he came out the room wanted to tell Tre something bad. In that little scene you could tell he was angry and upset he left but glad he was home. He knew his son made the right decision by NOT going. Plus Ricky just died so he felt empathy 😊. Great scene
I took something similar from this too. His dad probably understood tre cuz his friend got shot in front of him and died in his arms. But at the same time he was mad obviously at Tre but probably mad at himself too. For not moving out that environment for Tre to even go through that. He wanted to tell him something but what can you really say to someone especially your child, when they seen someone they love die in there arms, from some bullshit. And it’s not like Ricky was in a gang too he was just walking to the store. Powerful scene. So much to take from this
I feel that scene as a dad. Sometimes you feel like you have to scold/punish your child but because they made a right decision or told the truth etc. you also feel like coming down on them will teach them that doing the right thing doesn't matter. And in the end you don't know what to say and can only let your presence be seen and felt and then walk away. In those situations you NEVER feel like you made the right decision because you don't know what it was. But you have to keep being there and keep trying and make sure your kid knows it.
This is one of those "hard to watch twice" movies. That doesn't mean it's bad, it means the realism is so nicely done, that it actually gets my anxiety going. Movies rarely have that effect on me anymore; yeah, lots still leave me on the edge of my seat, but there's no true anxiety. That's how brilliant this movie is. And Ice Cube really proved his acting skills! I see so much hate because he's in a lot of comedies, but this here is an unforgettable piece, not just his skills, but this movie for its realism and message.
Fun fact: the actor who played Ricky’s killer in this movie felt so impacted by the movie that afterwards he became an actual gang member and like a real life villain. Killed multiple people and shit
He was already a gang member, when they were doing the movie they chose people who lived in the hood. He went to prison and then he got killed by his cellmate.
The dialogue between Ferris and his friends is so telling of the overall story. That could have been banter between Monster and Doughboy or even Tre and Ricky. Singleton's writing shines here as it shows the similarities between these neighborhood mortal enemies. They are all trying to survive the brutal violence of their environments, but the only real difference is living a few blocks away from each other.
Its fucked up cus the gang violence cycle is so tight that its still on now and might not ever break like that. Thats why Furious was the only father shown in that entire hood. I wouldnt be suprised if rickys son ended up being in the streets to. It’s something that can’t be stopped man fucked up
What Singleton was showing was the total lack of remorse Ferris and his crew felt, hours after murdering Ricky. They're eating, talking and laughing. They don't care. Homicide is a routine activity for them. Singleton wrote them as totally unsympathetic characters. Ferris deliberately knocked over Ricky to start the feud with him and Doughboy. Then they killed Ricky for no reason.

At 4:35 Dough knew that although he had killed the men that killed his brother, he had just signed his own death warrant. He knew he was next in that never ending cycle of street warfare.
Eventhough Furious was angry at Tre for leaving with Dough and putting him through that fright and anxiety, he was still relieved to see his son walk through that front door.
It's the mom opening up his sat scores that does it for me, if your a parent you can feel the pain knowing he made it to college but will never get the chance eats at your heart
What always threw me off was the fact she was so hurt at seeing her son down and out the first thing she did was reach for her breast to breast feed him to give him life ..tru motherly instinct kicked all the way in on that one
2:12 I love that Singleton takes a beat to humanize who to this point have essentially been faceless villains. They're just kids caught in the same cycle and the movie could just have easily followed them.

I see a lot of people don’t talk about the interaction between Tre and his father... When Tre walked in and his father saw him..It was basically like.. His father was disappointed, but he sees that he didn’t go with Dough and the crew and his son still alive and didn’t do anything stupid. He was pissed but a part of him on the inside was happy that Tre changed his mind and came back.

He knew somehow that his son didn't do anything to anybody, and seeing him was more of relief he was alive and disappointment that he thought about murdering someone.
This is my favorite scene because it hit home. A few years before this movie came out, I was 16, a senior in high school, already signed my full athletic scholarship to a D1 SEC school for track. BOOM, got a girl pregnant. When my parents found out from my girl’s parents, my father didn’t talk to me, no exaggeration, for three weeks. Not one word. I went on to become that lawyer in 1995. No more mishaps. So, when this movie came out, my father and I just looked at each other as if to say “does this scene look familiar?”! It’s exactly how it happened to me.
THANK YOU. I saw the disappointment in Furious' eyes when he saw Tre, but mixed with that disappointment was the relief that Tre was home. He saw in his son's eyes that Tre didn't go through with it. I'm happy someone else saw that from this clip.

When I saw this in the Theater, everyone cheered when the thugs got shot!! My wife and I just sat there dumbfounded shaking our heads. These people miss the entire point of the movie where one group kills another which then kills another in an endless cycle of violence… and they completely.. missed.. the point!!
Those cheers came from feelings of anger and hopelessness. Sometimes people don’t get that closure in real life, that they live vicariously through these characters.

I think they got the point, but a part of them still wanted to see those boys pay for what they did. That’s why revenge movies are so popular. Even though people know violence begets violence and vengeance is wrong, it’s still a super powerful motive.
Most of the time you can't turn just anybody into actors. You'll see directors try to use athletes, rappers to act and you can tell they're not real actors. That whole sequence of events after Ricky got shot was incredible. Life is all about decisions and Trey getting out of the car was the best decision he ever made. After 3 hours he had time to think about what happens next. On the flip side, doughboy knew what his future held with his decision and considering his mom already wrote him off and he probably was going to end up in prison or dead anyway but in his heart he had to put some closure on his brothers murder which in turn would guarantee his mom that street justice was served to the killer of her favorite son. When Trey got home his dad had no idea where he’s been or what he had done but at that point he didn’t care. Even thought he was pissed and disappointed in Trey, he was relieved that Trey was home safe. That whole movie was very well written and acted and after 25 years it’s still one of my favorites. The sad part is It hits home for so many people.
It was satisfying to see Dough get revenge for his brother and not letting the movie end with just showing Ricky’s funeral. But at the same time, a letdown to find out Dough was killed weeks later.
Killing his brother's killers was all he thought he had left. His delaying their deaths wasn't to make them suffer it was to hold onto life a little longer. It broke him, he died that night his actual death was inevitable at the point.
When Trey got out the car and none of his boys gave him shit for it, some people don't need to be in that life and Trey was one of them. They knew that

This scene was so touching. Lawrence Fishbourne was almost meditating for his son as though he was in the car with his son...."think son, think about your future., come back to me son" and Dough boy respected his decision, Ricky passing his exams and not having his future....the anger, the love combined. ....and so sad so many wasted young lives :( peace to all 2021

That wasn't the final scene. Sadly, in the final scene, as Doughboy walks away from a poignant conversation with Trey about the revenge and the state of the world, his figure fades and disappears and a caption states that he was murdered two weeks later. A truly sad ending to an all-too-real flick.
I wonder about doughboy's life before this moment it seems like he was forced into that decision,him vs Trey, Trey made the decision to keep his innocence where as doughboy's decided he had to have vengeance no matter the cost from either hood mentality killed your brother get them back,or family ties these bastards killed my own brother payback or both ... everyone gets a choice unless it's a split second thing like someone comes into your home with the intention to do you and your family that choice is taken from you
What hits hard is no matter how much dough boy fought with his little brother Ricky, deep down he always loved him. And that Is true to this day, having siblings myself.
Looking back at this film, I can't believe that John is gone. RIP John, Dookie (with the pacifier) the dude who smoked Ricky, and even the dude who gave them the football back. DAMN

John had a bad stroke & never recovered; "Dookie" was at a street race & got into an argument with someone and was shot dead; Lloyd Avery (Ricky's killer) actually became a Blood some years down the road, was sent to prison, and killed by his celly; and the one who gave Ricky his football back was killed in a car wreck...
All those years of wisdom and love from Furious finally started resonating with Trey in that car; even though he was initially angry he finally calmed down and thought about a small moment of anger could ruin his whole life
What I really love is how none of the crew insult or shit on tre for leaving, they all know what’s coming, and the guaranteed price thats gonna have to be paid.
I’ve always loved the scene when Tre comes back home. The music and the emotion. Not a single word is spoken and yet you can feel how disappointed and frustrated Furious is with Tre.
30 years later, this movie is still a classic!

Every man has to choose & go his own way. To me Tre made the right move. I believe in putting things in Gods hands & not taking revenge. That said I respect the choice Doughboy made & I understand why he did it
I think the reason Doeboy gets out of the car and murders Ferris at point blank range is because he is desperate to feel the satisfaction he believes getting revenge for his brother will bring him. Then you can see the puzzlement in his face right after he shoots him when he feels no different. I think the theme that was trying to be conveyed by the scene is that revenge and violence achieves nothing. It doesn’t make people feel better to get revenge, it just leaves them feeling empty and continues the cycle of misery. Truly one of the best movies of all time.
And yet... nobody ever suggests anything better.

What I really loved about this scene isn't that Tre just dutifully listens...he STILL sneaks off to go with Doughboy and Monsta to get revenge. But the impact of the father is felt in the car...the weight of that presence in his life, the lessons...he realizes this is a life altering thing that's going to happen and not in a good way...and rightfully asks to get out. And Doughboy, to his credit, obliges. Teenagers will test your gangsta no matter how well you raise them. But the idea is, if you raise them right, eventually they make the right decisions BECAUSE of how you raised them.

I took something similar from this too. His dad probably understood tre cuz his friend got shot in front of him and died in his arms. He wanted to tell him something but what can you really say to someone especially your child, when they seen someone they love die in there arms, from some bullshit. And it’s not like Ricky was in a gang too he was just walking to the store. Powerful scene. So much to take from this

I feel that scene as a dad. Sometimes you feel like you have to scold/punish your child but because they made a right decision or told the truth etc. you also feel like coming down on them will teach them that doing the right thing doesn't matter. And in the end you don't know what to say and can only let your presence be seen and felt and then walk away. In those situations you NEVER feel like you made the right decision because you don't know what it was. But you have to keep being there and keep trying and make sure your kid knows it.
The music is really fitting to these scenes, they give a solitaire vibe.

This is one of those "hard to watch twice" movies. That doesn't mean it's bad, it means the realism is so nicely done, that it actually gets my anxiety going. And Ice Cube really proved his acting skills! The dialogue between Ferris and his friends is so telling of the overall story. That could have been banter between Monster and Doughboy or even Tre and Ricky. Singleton's writing shines here as it shows the similarities between these neighborhood mortal enemies. They are all trying to survive the brutal violence of their environments, but the only real difference is living a few blocks away from each other.

Then they killed Ricky for no reason.

When Tre got out the car, he stopped. He knew somehow that his son didn't do anything to anybody, and seeing him was more of relief he was alive and disappointment that he thought about murdering someone.

When I saw this in the Theater, everyone cheered when the thugs got shot!! My wife and I just sat there dumbfounded shaking our heads. These people miss the entire point of the movie where one group kills another which then kills another in an endless cycle of violence… and they completely.. missed.. the point!!
Those cheers came from feelings of anger and hopelessness. Sometimes people don’t get that closure in real life, that they live vicariously through these characters.

I think they got the point, but a part of them still wanted to see those boys pay for what they did. That’s why revenge movies are so popular. Even though people know violence begets violence and vengeance is wrong, it’s still a super powerful motive.

Most of the time you can't turn just anybody into actors. You'll see directors try to use athletes, rappers to act and you can tell they're not real actors. But imagine being a kid straight out the rap group NWA and transitioning to acting and you kill it. Ice Cubes acting in this scene was so good dawg
I'm 40 yrs old, been watching this shyt since I was a child and it still hurts. The feelings of dread, regret and sadness are still fresh as the first time I watched it.

The look on doughboys face the pondering of life and death and the fact that he just committed murder Ice Cube did such a great job capturing that emotion well done sir
That whole sequence of events after Ricky got shot was incredible. Life is all about decisions and Trey getting out of the car was the best decision he ever made. After 3 hours he had time to think about what happens next. On the flip side, doughboy knew what his future held with his decision and considering his mom already wrote him off and he probably was going to end up in prison or dead anyway but in his heart he had to put some closure on his brothers murder which in turn would guarantee his mom that street justice was served to the killer of her favorite son. When Trey got home his dad had no idea where he’s been or what he had done but at that point he didn’t care. Even thought he was pissed and disappointed in Trey, he was relieved that Trey was home safe. That whole movie was very well written and acted and after 25 years it’s still one of my favorites. The sad part is It hits home for so many people.
It was satisfying to see Dough get revenge for his brother and not letting the movie end with just showing Ricky’s funeral. But at the same time, a letdown to find out Dough was killed weeks later.
Killing his brother's killers was all he thought he had left. His delaying their deaths wasn't to make them suffer it was to hold onto life a little longer. It broke him, he died that night his actual death was inevitable at the point.
When Trey got out the car and none of his boys gave him shit for it, some people don't need to be in that life and Trey was one of them. They knew that

This scene was so touching. Lawrence Fishbourne was almost meditating for his son as though he was in the car with his son...."think son, think about your future., come back to me son" and Dough boy respected his decision, Ricky passing his exams and not having his future....the anger, the love combined. ....and so sad so many wasted young lives :( peace to all 2021

Dough boy had no father and basically no mother thats why he’s different than Ricky because Ricky actually got support from his mom
I used to think the same way until I watching it a few more times and got older doughs mother loved him but it was different than how she loved ricky but dough needed/wanted the love that ricky was getting hear me out when dough got arrested momma showed tough love by letting the cops take him maybe it straightens him out when he came home who threw him his party and who's house was it at mommas dough isn't doin much other than banging and selling dope yet mom nvr kicks him out nvr puts him out in the street she showed love but not in an affectionate way

The only thing this scene makes me feel is crying. My cousin loved this movie and for being in the wrong steps he was gunned down 5 years ago. When we were kids He always cried at the scene where that boy got out of the Impala. May my cousin rest in peace

That wasn't the final scene. Sadly, in the final scene, as Doughboy walks away from a poignant conversation with Trey about the revenge and the state of the world, his figure fades and disappears and a caption states that he was murdered two weeks later. A truly sad ending to an all-too-real flick.

John had a bad stroke & never recovered; "Dookie" was at a street race & got into an argument with someone and was shot dead; Lloyd Avery (Ricky's killer) actually became a Blood some years down the road, was sent to prison, and killed by his celly; and the one who gave Ricky his football back was killed in a car wreck...

I’ve always loved the scene when Tre comes back home. The music and the emotion. Not a single word is spoken and yet you can feel how disappointed and frustrated Furious is with Tre.
Did Furious know Tre bailed or did he assume he participated in the shooting? Felt like Tre should’ve told his father what happened.
