Love your channel! I just past my PPL theoretical examination yesterday.😊 I plan to build my own grass runway by my summer house on the Swedish island Gotland in 2024 500x25meters When it's done, you'll have a standing invitation to visit!
Congrats on passing the tests. I hope to go up for my check ride soon... But I am jealous of the mere idea of having your own airstrip. That would be an impossibility here in the Netherlands. Even for helicopters, as a famous entrepreneur found out. He bought a small helo, found out he is still only allowed to land it at designated heliports which did not include his house or office. He got mad and (illegally) parked the thing on the roof of his office, where it sits to this day.
I learned to fly at Ipswich Airport while I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters in the 80s. It had two very well maintained grass runways, and I loved the experience. Having flown out of hundreds of airports in the United States, I can say that flying out of Ipswich airport was a valuable experience for me and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It will always hold a special place in my heart.
@@ShortField That must’ve been a very nice cross country. I learned at Horizon Flying Club and the chief flight instructor was Bill Stitt. I was sad to hear that they closed the airport sometime after I left England. I believe he moved the club to a farm in Framlingham, Suffolk. Not sure if it even exists today.
Snipped from a post on my own site, appropriate I imagine, for an optimist such as you... "...We all start out with a finite stock of optimism. Guard this carefully! Once it's gone, you will never get it back. Let things be what they are, without the habit of deciding in advance, that the outcome will necessarily be a bad one. It may be a bad outcome, but that does not mean that the next time will go as badly. Sometimes, things will go really well, and you'd be surprised at how often this is the case, when your own attitude helps to shape outcomes. How you see things, has a profound influence over what your experience turns out to be. You'll need all the help you can get, so it makes sense to start by helping yourself. Expect the best, settle for less, accept the worst, undeterred. Repeat. " ☺
Your videos on short field landing are very inspiring. I enjoy flying round the farm strips of Devon and Cornwall in my Skyranger, out of Perranporth. My favourtites are Eggesford, Stoodleigh Barton, Davidstow, Eaglescott and Bolt Head. Hope to get further afield as time and weather allow!
Couldn't agree more Terry! I love flying to the small airfields, they're so picturesque, completely out of the way, and feels like such a rare privilege to use them, and to share in the camaraderie of others who enjoy them!
I’ve had a very similar experience.... learnt to fly in a Warrior, but since moving over to fixed wing microlights, I’ve loved being able to land almost anywhere. My home strip is 300m, and I’m happy getting it in there, so knowing there aren’t many shorter strips, the world is our lobster! Thanks for another great vid Terry...
Just when i was getting into flying to small strips i had to stop flying due to medical reasons and you have re kindled my interest in trying again thankyou blue skies and wind on the centre line
I absolutely love your content. The types of flights you take are exactly the reason I decided to stat going for my Private Pilot License. Thank you for the inspiration and taking us along on your adventures. I'm only 3 hours in to my training, so I have a bit to go but I'm enjoying it so far! 😉
Nice one Terry, hit the nail on the head there! Think I recognised most of those strips, done most of them in G-HAYY. Sportcruiser also, as you know, but mentioned for your followers. Great aircraft for almost all strips, but also comfortable in the cruise. The lovely Rotax can hardly be heard👂
Great one Terry ... like I said before, people used to farm strips are more nervous of large aerodrome and vica versa ... learn and land in bigger places .... give farm strops a miss ! 😂
A nice thought provoking video Terry💜😊👍✌️ With my dad, I started at grass strips, then did some training at larger, local airport alongside, jets, helos, microlights etc with FISO and often very busy. Good to get a feel for both imho👍🤔😊💜
Nice video Terry. I just fly to the strips because I can and my little plane is not great on hard runways. I often get asked about the strips I go to but very few will join me for the flight to them. I always treat them as a cross between a precautionary landing and a normal circut for my 1st visit and have an alternative should it be a no go.
I have found/landed at 5 airfields on The Isle of Wight (Bembridge, Dandown, Binstead, Whitwell, Freshwater Fruitfarm). It would be nice to find another if anyone has contact details etc.
I learnt to fly at an airfield with only grass runways. (Shortest 774m, longest 1338m). So having flown into plenty of short strips with no official charts I am the opposite to you. It's not that I avoid anything with a sealed runway it is just that I am not as confident flying into controlled airspace. My excuse at the moment is my preferred cross country aircraft needs it's transponder upgraded before I can go into controlled airspace as the rules were changed while it was awaiting a new engine being installed. Once that is sorted I definitely have to make more flights into my closest Control C airport. It even has a short grass strip (not even 700m long) next to the main runway.

åh mycket trevligt!
So sorry for the late reply, that sounds amazing I would absolutely be honoured to visit when it's done. Thank you so much.
I couldn't agree more! Devizes Urchfont is one of my favourites 😍
Love it, I can see the attraction of flying into these little places. The challenge, the rural tranquility and memories they produce.

Ipswich was my first land away, I learned to fly at Southend.

Good saying.
I always enjoy your videos Terry, thank you for the time you put into them.

Always wanted to land at Stoodleigh. My parents lived near there. Never did manage it though.

Thanks Mike
I’m with you. I find small strips have so much more character than bigger airfields. Giles - spotted another one of your mugs!!
Again, another great and informative post. Loved it. Thanks for sharing. 🎉
Thanks again Sarah!

I love a short strip but then I do have a slow aircraft. Nicely put together Terry.
Thanks Giles - low and slow :-)

Oh no hope you are OK Barry?

Wow thank you so much and good luck with the training sir, I shall follow your journey, just subbed you.
@@ShortField Thanks so much, I appreciate that!

True about the Rotax, you were overhead Stoneylane (pretty low), before I even knew you were there.
Thanks Pete it's our dirty little secret :-)
That's a beautiful video!
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!

Thank you and great advice.
A nice thought provoking video Terry💜😊👍✌️

Very true, both is best.
Another great video Terry, they are always well put together and informative. Thanks for sharing, oh and who’s yellow aeroplane was that 🤔😂👍
Cheers Dave I was going to call you out :-)
Great video. I may try this. Thanks.
Thanks so much.
Nice one Terry!
Thank you kindly Tim
Great video as always ))
Thank you
Hi Terry,
What is the last field in the video with the gun battery, looks like an interesting place to visit
That's for a future video, great spotting though :-)
Great video, have u been to laddingford or old hay farm strips in kent
Yes both, I visit Laddingford quite regularly and have landed on all the runways there.
Excellent. Can't wait to get into this when I've got my PPL. Is that Spilsted Farm at around 3:10?
Yes and that's a pretty long one although like a roller coaster :-)

Thanks Algy I am a true convert.
Big tarmac runways scare the hell out of me! Give me 3-400 metres of grass anytime!
:-)
I have found/landed at 5 airfields on The Isle of Wight (Bembridge, Dandown, Binstead, Whitwell, Freshwater Fruitfarm). It would be nice to find another if anyone has contact details etc.
Not sure there are any others, Freshwater is very tight and I cocked up Whitwell but Binstead is pretty forgiving. You beat me by one :-)

Thanks for watching and great comment Catherine.
Is that Southend Airport in the start?
Yes sir.
What was that last strip you where flying to? Seems awfully welcoming with those big guns pointing in your direction while landing 😮
I think that was Weybourne, also home to the Muckleburgh Collection (Military). Well worth a visit, and superb approach over the water (and the guns!)
Hi Terry. How's your mount, CZ coming along - back in the air yet?
Parts arrived, permit next week then 'back in the game' Graham.
@@ShortField Brilliant news. Bet you cant wait...
Roll on spring.....
Yes please.
I don’t know if there isn’t enough room to abort a takeoff you’re just playing with time
