VoicePlay are basically the theater kids of the acapella sphere. But their videos are so creative and the arrangements go from great to mind blowing. You really can’t go wrong with anything from VoicePlay.

Anything VoicePlay I'm here for. Geoff Castellucci's bass is to melt for. Absolutely fell down the rabbit hole with them and Geoff also has his own channel that he does Low Bass covers. VoicePlay is #TheTeatreKidsOfACappella. Tony had left the group. Earl left July 2020 and J.None left June of 2021 to join the Navy. Cesar is the newest member in 2021. They can go over the top with their costumes, make-up, and sets. Geoff, Layne, and Earl have been together singing since Middle/high school.

I love Voiceplay! They are the theatre kids of A Capella music. They've done so much it's hard to choose just one. The Little Mermaid Melody, Friends on the Other Side, Queen in 5 minutes, Hoist The Colors, My Mother Told Me. All so good. Also Geoff has a lot of solo music out there. They're all just full of talent. Thank you for the great reaction!

Geoffs greatest solo is in Oogie Boogie's song. Once you hear him sing low, you are amazed at how clear and resonant his voice is, when you hear him go right up to a full tenor rock belt, you can't believe that someone who sings bass has that much range - 4.5 octaves of it.

Of all the a cappella groups, Voiceplay is by far my favorite. You have to listen to their cover of Hoist The Colours High, a pirate song from the 3rd Pirates of the Caribbean movie. They also do a fabulous rendition of Carry On My Wayward Son, If I were a Rich Man/Girl, and their Little Mermaid medley, and If you love Geoff Castallucci, their bass singer, he has his own channel where he does all of the parts solo, he is incredible.

It's pretty widely accepted that the Holy Trinity of Acapella is (in no particular order), Home Free, Voiceplay, and Pentatonix. Voiceplay is probably the most known as the more theatrical of the three groups. They are also known for the smoothness of their transitions. I always love to watch people discover this group, because I just love them so much! I've seen them 4 times now, and have met them, and in addition to being incredibly talented, they are genuinely nice, lovely guys! #Voiceplaya4Life

As a metal fan, I am surprised to find that I enjoy voiceplay immensely. The medleys are brilliant. I'm constantly playing the Oogie Boogie man as it cracks me up.... But I can't stop watching warriors - imagine dragon and hoist the colours.... They just trap my attention.. Took me a couple of listens... But now? Wow!

Oh boy. If you're just starting out on this journey, you're in for quite the ride.
Besides just the Disney stuff (which they admittedly do quite a lot of), VoicePlay can pull out the stops and do pop (Man In the Mirror, Boy Bands in 5 Minutes, Butter), rock (Carry On Wayward Son, Queen in 5 Minutes, Panic! in 4 Minutes), as well as Broadway (Wicked medley, If I Were A Rich Man/Girl, The Phantom of the Opera) and well, basically anything else that strikes their fancy. They're ridiculously versatile in terms of genres and styles, but regardless of what they do they always make it fun. You're not going to find bad choices on their channel; just pick songs you like. (although I will say, if you want to see a piece that was absolutely gobsmacking every reactor that viewed it when it came out, check out their cover of Hoist the Colours, from the Pirates of the Caribbean. It is a tour de force of an arrangement and performance. The video is pretty great as well.)
Also worth mentioning- the bass singer in this group, Geoff Castellucci, has his own solo channel, and I would highly encourage you to listen to some of his work as well. Geoff has about a 5 octave range, so he layers his own vocals singing higher harmonies on his deep bass covers. And as he arranges about half of VoicePlay's pieces, his arrangements for his own songs are just as incredible.

    • @Tryst46
      @Tryst46 2 года назад +3

ELO fans should listen to their version of Mister Blue Sky. They used vocal harmonics of Earl, J None and Eli to get the guitar vocal sound spot on and it was a fantastic tribute to ELO. Earl had a unique voice in the high range that really made it possible in my view and it only needed a small amount of autotune.

    • @galahad692000
      @galahad692000 2 года назад +1

I love VoicePlay! The guy on the back right, Earl (high tenor) has left the group. He, Layne and Geoff founded the group together with two others in 1997 when they were still in high school (lower secondary school), so they’ve been going strong for quite some time. They participated in the Sing Off where they made friends with HomeFree. The current members are Eli Jacobsen (tenor, back left), Layne Stein (beatboxer, front left), Geoff Castellucci (bass, front right) and Cesar de la Rosa who joined them in August 2021 (so he’s not in this video). They dropped “The greatest showman medley” a couple of days ago, also featuring Rachel Potter. I highly recommend it, it’s great!

  • @johndeeregreen4592

Geoff definitely has the best bass voice in acappella, without a doubt. Plus, his access to his 5 octave range is hard to beat.

  • @letheardaw

Please, please react to Hoist the Colours. The Moana Medley is great, but the group takes it to a whole new level with HtC. Geoff Castellucci also does low bass covers, cloning himself as the back up singers and showing off his 5 octave range.

  • @christinestromberg4057
    @christinestromberg4057 2 года назад +29

Their latest is a medley of songs from The Greatest Showman. A brilliant concept, very imaginative, and expertly done. VoicePlay is unique in their theatricality. It's what sets them apart. Geoff Castellucci is the bass and he's a beast. His solo covers are interesting as he clones himself to create his own backing groups, singing all the parts, as he has a range of five octaves. Eli (rhymes with jelly) is the little bald guy and used to sing in rock groups so has power, riffs and runs. Rachel is a guest singer for this one, also The Little Mermaid, and is in their latest, The Greatest Showman, and many others. I can recommend Tennessee Whisky, and Can't Help Falling in Love, if you like harmonies, and their Hoist The Colours is mind blowing. The baritone you mention I don't think I've ever heard of. Sorry. And yes, fun is a big part of what they do whatever the genre. Geoff and Tim are friends and Geoff has done arrangements for Home Free before now. There are videos trying to compare the various bass singers but for me Geoff wins hands down on smoothness of tone. As to Rachel she played Ariel the little mermaid for Disney for years. She has also appeared off Broadway in Wicked.

    • @Tryst46
      @Tryst46 2 года назад +3

They always manage to top the last production they did. The greatest Showman Medley really shows off the talent of their newest member, Cesar De La Rosa, a fantastic addition to their group, just a shame it has to be at the expense of J None and his unbelievable riffs that you can hear when he does a feature with them in Friends On The Other Side.
The Greatest Showman also shows the sheer power of Rachels voice, the only person who can drown out even Eli's rock belt. An extremely beautiful woman, but don't get her angry, she could burst your eardrums if she shouts at you. :)

VoicePlay are my favorite acapella group at the moment. One of the things that I very much love about them is that they just... you can feel how much fun they're having with each piece that they do. Their bass singer Geoff is just... amazing. He's even got his own solo channel, where he does a lot of amazing stuff. I'd suggest his House of the Rising Sun or Sixteen Tons covers as a starting point for him.
There's been some change-up from the group since this one. Earl has left the group, as has their baritone who joined after this one came out, JNone. They still have Eli, Layne, and Geoff, and they've got a new permanent fourth member (still working on filling the fifth slot), Cesar De La Rosa. But what is best about them is that they always deliver an outstanding vocal performance, regardless of whether it is the core group, or if they've got a guest singer. What's more, everyone in the group gets their chance to shine. If one person isn't featured as much in a particular song, they'll have a chance to shine in another. Just never overlook Eli. He supports very well, but when he shines, he burns.
Either way, welcome to the world of VoicePlay. It's an amazing journey.

If I my choice, I'd send you back 8 years when VoicePlay was on the Sing-Off tour and did a little number called "Road Trip". It is a combination of an acapella comedy skit and delights the viewer. He got it exactly right! Rachel is featured artist taking the place of our baritone (although before Layne (Surf Cali) became vocal percussionist he was the baritone).

In addition to what is already said: Layne Stein is both vocal percussionist and baritone, and he was actually their original baritone at the 4:2:Five time, and their original vocal percussionist was Scott Porter (an actor by current career, last seen in Lucifer and Taking the Reins I believe).
As for two basses together - not sure if they had any collaboration with PTX but they did Zombies vs Hillbillies together with HomeFree and Tim Foust participated in Voiceplay's Just Sing.

When you listen to Voiceplay, you have to keep reminding yourself that the bass and drums are done with voices. Geoff and Layne have been together since school and they can almost work together as one. So many times, I have listened and the bass/drums sound so real that I forget that it's all vocal. Geoff does a perfect bass guitar sound and in Mister Blue Sky, he even plays the air guitar for a laugh.
With Voiceplay, it's not just a song, they really enjoy and have fun doing it and it shows in their productions.
Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole, many of us fell in and found ourselves unable (or unwilling) to get out.

They have changed many members over the last 20 years. Three are still the same in Geoff, Layne and Eli (Elly).
Racheal has been on about 10 times with them. You need to hear "Hoist the Colours" from pirates of the Carribean 3rd movie.
Their latest from the play/musical "Wicked" medley. Also with Racheal and Emoni Wilkins.

Layne, Geoff, Earl goes back to 42five together with Scott Porter.

Dive down the rabbit hole and enjoy! Just pick anything that appeals to you and it'll be amazing. They just never miss! Geoff, the bass, and Layne, the beatboxer, arrange all of their music themselves. They do everything themselves except for the final mix. If you want to hear their insane character voices Oogie Boogie is a must--all their songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas are so funny and incredibly intricate. Geoff hasn't even touched a low note in this one. He hits his record in Halo with a B0. His signature note is a subharmonic E1 and he hits it in most songs.

I am so glad you did this reaction! Voiceplay is the 'theatre kids' of the three acapella groups. I think that 'Moana Medley' and 'Little Mermaid Medley' are two of the best things on the internet. Their latest stuff 'Hoist the Colors', 'Wicked Medley', 'If I were a rich man/girl', 'The Greatest Showman Medley', and 'Friends on the other side', all of these show that the acapella groups are taking their art to a whole new level... Amazing stuff! Geoff Castellucci (pronounced 'Jeff') has his own channel, and 'Blackbird' is my favorite, though 'Sixteen Tons' and 'Far over the Misty Mountains Cold' are great, and really, anything by Geoff is amazing. All of these would be great to react to, though 'Hoist the Colors' has broken many reactors. (So if you like a challenge...) Thanks for this!

The channel Marcello Bass has a few of them titled Bass Battle starring Avi, Geoff, and Tim, as well as a few others like Elliot Robinson (Home Free's bass before Tim), Joe Santoni (from a Disney exclusive Acapella group called DCappella), Adam Chance (Home Free's current baritone), and others

VoicePlay actually recently put out a Greatest Showman medley. The members are out of date at the time of the Moana Medley with three still remaining. Eli (pronounced El-e), is on the top left. Incredible range and has amazing versatility. He has rock-like vocals and has a beautiful baritone range as well being Tenor 2: Rachel is on the middle. She is not in VoicePlay as a full time member, and she has done 11 collabs, including four medleys, with this being one of them, with VoicePlay indeed. On the top right is Earl. He was the former tenor of the group with an effortless range. He can show off the fifth octave like it’s a day in the office and considering he looks like a lumberjack, quite surprising. They are still looking for a fifth member, specifically the high one, and Rachel is considered one of them. Layne is on the bottom left. He is still in the group and does the vocal percussion. He is an amazing beat boxer with a mix of drums and sound effects in his arsenal. And last, but certainly not least, Geoff Castellucci. A 5-octave range and the king of subharmonics. He has a solo channel as well and he is also recently releasing a new song, which is coming soon. Their baritone was J.None, who had amazing riffs and had such a good tone. They now have a new baritone in the name of Cesar de la Rosa, who has incredible tone and a funny attitude that’s very contagious. He recently joined half a year ago in July, and made his debut as a VoicePlay member in August. J.None has joined in 2017 and has left recently in 2021 to join the navy. BTW, VoicePlay was actually not founded in 2012. They are the oldest group in the big three being founded in 1997, which makes this their 25th anniversary. Your welcome for the info.

Oogie Boogie, Hoist The Colors, Phantom of the Opera, If I Were A Rich Man/Girl, Billie Eilish, Panic! Part 1, Panic! Part 2, Queen In Five Minutes, Other Side, Mission : Jingle Bells, The Grinch, My Mother Told Me, Warriors, Daddy Sang Bass, Little Mermaid.
And oh so many more! LOL. Those are just my favorites that I listed (not in any particular order).
Geoff Castelluci, the bass, has a five octave range. He's got a solo channel of his own, too. Take a listen through some of his solo work if you really like him. His voice makes me melt every single time! He took a lot of influence from Thurl Ravenscroft as well. Some of his solo covers : 16 Tons, Misty Mountains, Monster Mash, Headless Horseman, Bare Necessities, House of the Rising Sun, etc. His channel also has audio readings and a couple of low singing tutorials on it. Note that his solo covers are not pure acapella; he layers multiple tracks of his own voice carrying all the parts and frequently has at least a basic instrumental accompaniment on his solo work.
Eli (pronounced Ell-ee), the bald guy, is an absolutely amazing tenor. He also has a massive range, and a ton of vocal agility. I LOVE listening to his voice soar.
Layne (the beatboxer/vocal percussion), also plays violin and can sing like an angel as well. He doesn't sing as much, but when he does, he just has this really sweet sounding, smoothe voice.
Cesar (not in this video), is a recent official joined member. His first video as an official member was If I Was a Rich Man/Girl, but he was in multiple others as a guest artist.
Earl left the group in July 2020. He was the high tenor, also an amazing singer and I still miss him! LOL.
J None (baritone, not in this video), left recently to join the military.
Tony left the group a while back to focus on more theatrical avenues and runs Patty Cake Productions, which is the studio where they film a lot of their videos. He was in Phantom of the Opera as the Phantom. Beautiful voice as well.
Rachael Potter is a frequent guest artist, so you'll see her name attached to a few different videos.
Layne and Geoff share doing the arrangements for the group. They basically trade off every other one (more or less). They're both wonderfully talented arrangers.
And of course the theater feel to their videos is just perfect if you like musical theater (I love it. LOL). You'll find a LOT of their videos have that theatrical production vibe with makeup, costuming, etc.
I could go on, but I'll stop there. I've over-written in the comment section as usual. 😂 I do hope you look up some of their other work, as you really can't get a good feel for what they can do as vocalists until you start going through more of their videos. They're ALL just amazingly talented and skilled, and super creative.
Enjoy the Voice Play rabbit hole. 😉

If/when you do, be sure to turn on the captions. They included information about who everyone is, as well as a few snarky remarks.

Welcome to Voiceplay! The original group 42Five was founded in 1997 by Geoff, Layne, Earl and 2 others. Their roster has changed in the last 18 months, they are currently down one member. They currently feature other artists to fill that fifth position.
I enjoyed your reaction very much and hope to see more of Voiceplay on your channel. May I recommend (for drama) Hoist the Colours, Wicked medley, Warriors. For fun - If I Were a Rich Man/Girl, Butter, Bang. For vocal beauty - Go the Distance, Carry on Wayward Son, Can't Help Falling in Love.
Others have mentioned Geoff Castellucci (the bass) single channel. He's only been doing solo work since the pandemic, so the list is not long. God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen, even though Christmas is past, House of the Rising Sun, and Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold.

Rachel has been featured in lot of their performances. She's currently in the cast of Wicked, but covid left holes in her schedule, and she was back for the most recent drops "The Greatest Show" and "Wicked" (both are medleys.) This one was arranged by Layne. Layne and Geoff split the arranging work, roughly 50/50.

It's been done, you can find it on RUclips.
Geoff has a very smooth, resonant tone and his low bass down to a D1 is an effortless chest voice. He only goes subharmonic with notes lower than that.
Tim has more of a gruff tone, more suited to the country style music that Home Free has adopted. He actually tutored Geoff to sing low bass.
Avi is also slightly more gruff than Geoff, but a little more of a rock style bass.

VoicePlay is more like musical theatre. They really get into the characters they perform. The "Oogie Boogie Song", "Phantom of the Opera" and "Hoist the Colours High" are just examples of it. I really love everything they do, and I can't just pick one. Take your time, look at their channel, they are really awesome!
The group was formed in 1997 (not 2012), with original members Earl (high tenor), Geoff (bass) and Layne (beatboxer). Eli (2nd tenor, bald guy) joined in 2010. At the time they did Moana they only had 4 members, because the baritone spot (Tony Wakim, 2011-2016) wasn't covered until 2018, when J None joined them. There's been another couple of changes, but I already confused you enough, right? More next time 😊
Looking forward to many VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci reactions from you!

Is this your first encounter with VoicePlay? If so, you are in for a treat. They indeed do Disney songs, and lots of other stuff. Check out their version of Oogie Boogie Song (Nightmare Before Christmas), If I Were a Rich Man/Girl (Fiddler on the Roof), My Mother Told Me (Vikings), The Greatest Showman Medley just came out. The amazing bass Geoff Castellucci also has his own channel. The band has lost and gained members. Earl Elkins (right side upper row) has since left and Cesar De La Rosa is the newest addition (amazing voice). They have many regular guests. Rachel is a one and fits so well, many think (me included) that she should be made a member in full standing. Please review more VoicePlay and Goeff Castellucci videos. I'll be waiting. 🌺

To answer the questions who's the bassist bass . It's split between Tim and Geoff . For a long while Tim hit one note lower and Geoff hit one note higher however with a recent new song and some fo Geoff's bass tutorials Geoff hits the same low notes as tim but hits higher notes than Tim . There both good friends and Tim actually taught Geoff alot fo tips tricks ect including Tim's famous growl notes which Geoff had never heard before hearing Tim . Geoff has his owne special bass trick called subharmonics which is a form of throat singing (2 notes sung at once) as the name suggest SUB-harmonics it's harmonising with bass notes to produce a low note . The members of the groupe can be a little confusing because there have been a few changes . There are only 3 constant members in voiceplay being Layne Geoff and Eli (pronounced Ellie) the other male in the video earl left around 2020 . A amazing black baritone called j none joined after this song had released but then later also left not too much longer after earl. Then a brilliant man called Cesar joined and is the fourth current member of the groupe . There are only four members as of current . Before all of this though during and a while after the singoff they had a member called Tony . Tony was the last time they had five members I believe . Ever since it's always been four members and a feature or just the four. During the sing off they had six members being earl Eli Layne Geoff Tony and a female they had specifically for the sing off called honey who also appears in there video /voiceplay Vs home free : survivor (zombies Vs hillbillies) where home free and voiceplay do have a singing battle . This performance was made because they never got to do it on the sing off . Rob Tim and Chris from home free have all made appearances on voiceplay be it for full songs or just for quick parts . Rachel is often seen as the fifth/sub-member as she is in a massive amount of voiceplay videos . The most common question is when is Rachel just gonna join voiceplay? . She's in 3/5ths of the songs . Infact she's been the the most recent 2 voiceplay videos .

We'd all love a bass-off of Geoff, Tim, and Avi. One day! They're all friends, after all.
Avi's lowest chest voice note is G1, lowest professionally recorded note for a song is an E1 growl, which is his lowest yet.
Tim's lowest chest note is F#1 (a semitone lower), lowest professional note is a C1 growl, and lowest unofficial note is a C0 growl at a concert... where he blew out a speaker, haha!
Geoff's lowest chest note is a D1, lowest professional note is a B0 subharmonic, and lowest unofficial note is C0 in chest fry in his video on how to sing low.
    Other good contenders:
Marwan from The Bass Gang was the 2nd person (after Geoff) to sing a B0 professionally in a song... at only 17 years of age! His voice has a couple decades to fully mature, so he's going to break records... and subwoofers!
Elliott Robinson (former bass in Home Free) can sing a B0 in chest but only did so in a TikTok where he glided down his range, so it's unofficial. I'm unsure what his lowest professionally sung note is. (He is sadly under rated!)
The true master was the late JD Sumner, bass singer for Elvis, with a chest note G0. RIP, bass grandpa!
Avi, Tim, and Geoff each have such different voices, it's impossible to pick a favorite. Avi's voice is so beautiful, it doesn't matter than he rarely uses vocal techniques to go lower than his modal voice. Tim has that Southern twang that makes his chest voice sound light and fun, but then he growls like a hellhound. Geoff has a darker tone overall, a mastery of character voices from his time working at Universal Studios, and his use of subharmonics makes his lows sound more powerful. Subs are more "voiced" than what you can achieve with growl. However, he humbly admits that B0 and C1 are extremely hard for him, whereas Tim can growl a G0 pretty much on command.
A bass-off would boils down to what sort of bass you like. As a musician, I like the musical quality of subharmonics more than growl. I like that he can voice the notes that way (like the ending of "Way On Down") as opposed to a non-lyrical growl deep in the throat. It's a personal preference, though.

Voiceplay is the absolute best! Geoff and Layne do most of the arrangements for the group. Geoff has a 5 octave range and does low bass covers on his own channel, that you should absolutely check out! Layne is a percussion MACHINE and runs Pattycake Productions with former member Tony Wakim. Eli is the master of riffs and runs. The newest member Caesar, has a beautiful voice. This video is awesome and still, probably wouldn't even be in my top 10 favorites from Voiceplay. Their more recent videos are just incredible! I highly recommend their Wicked medley, Hoist the Colors, The Little Mermaid Medley, Carry on my Wayward Son, The Greatest Showman Medley, Friends on the Other Side, and Man in the Mirror, just to name a few. Some of my favorite older ones are Just Sing, Warriors, True Colors, Oogie Boogie Song, Boy Bands in 5 Minutes, and their Queen in 5 minutes Medleys. There are just so many great ones to choose from, you can't go wrong with anything Voiceplay! Keep going down the Voiceplay rabbit hole and you may end up with more subs than you know what to do with! LOL

They've also collaborated with Home Free/ individual members of Home Free, several times. They are all in Zombies vs Hillbillies doing a cover of Survivor. Geoff did the arrangement for HF's cover of Elvira featuring the Oak Ridge Boys. First time watching you guys, and I had a blast. I'm a big fan of Voiceplay, and honestly you can't go wrong if you wanna listen to another of their songs.
Like I said, new here, I don't know what kinda stuff you guys like, but here's my personal opinion.
If you guys wanna go with more Disney, the Little Mermaid Medley, or the Oggie Boogie Song from Nightmare before Christmas are good choices.
If you wanna get your brains melted, I'd suggest Hoist the Colours(it's even spelled the British way), or their new Wicked medley, which took Geoff, like, 4 years to arrange.
If you wanted more medleys, I'd suggest Queen in 5 minutes, Boy Bands in 5 minutes, or Billie Eilish in 3 minutes.
If you asked me my personal favorites, it would have to be If I was a rich man/girl from Fiddler on the Roof, and Bang!, those two are so catchy.
Honestly as much as I enjoy this Medley, and it was bomb at the time, Voiceplay has improved so much since.
As some others have mentioned, Geoff has a solo channel, which is also fantastic. If you wanted to check that out, I'd be delighted, and suggest starting with 16 Tons, Blackbird or House of the Rising Sun.
Or, y'know you could react to everything and I'd never leave RUclips to do something productive with my life. Regardless, I'll stay tuned with you guys. ❤

What I meant to say was thea the group were originally named "42Five" and changed their name to "VoicePlay"
This is from the wiki website, which is not always accurate, but other searches state they were called "42Five" in High School and would eventually become "voiceplay"
"Based in Orlando, FL, VoicePlay (formerly 42Five) performs their own incredible brand of entertainment across the country and around the world."
