This is so sad I’m from Oregon and have been to this Aquarium many years ago and it hasn’t changed when I was there they had one seal 🦭 we nicknamed the grandpa because he was so large he always sat in the back and would clap his/her fins and would make sounds because people would throw fish to him when he did I hope by you making these videos it will get the word out and will make a difference in these beautiful seals 🦭 life
It really hit when you showed the Oregon Coast Aquarium and then showed the seaside aquarium . It hurt to see how little space they have. It is really cool that you are trying to help
Animals deserve to be treated like what they are: living creatures. They should not be used as entertainment for some money. And the fact that this has been going for 70 years is so sad to think about, all these beautiful sea animals should be put in the open sea or in a suitable aquarium. People like this really make changes. We need more people like him.
They can be used as entertainment, but they have to be treated and well taken care of. It's like having a dog doing tricks like sit, except in front over others, and after the dog does his trick he gets a treat.
If they have been in captivity for their entire life then they won't know how to survive in the wild. Best thing to do is a program where you teach them how to survive and if they still don't know how, than we put them in a life like aquarium, it would be like being in the except not as big as the entire ocean, and they would put live food in the tanks like in the wild.
My wife and I absolutely want to help the Marine mammals at this aquarium. We wrote a letter to the White House and we shared your video to bring awareness into what is going on at this aquarium. Fingers crossed, hopefully we will hear something back from them soon and with your video it will help bring strong action into getting help for these amazing marine mammals.
Thank you for what you and your wife have done. My wife and myself have also contributed financially, we just hope that this facility can be closed down and all of the animals can be re-housed and nursed back to health. It really upsets us to see that such a horrible facility has existed for so long. It’s tone

Not only that, he's going out of his way to help and spend money for little changes. AND he's not one of those RUclipsrs that make his followers spend their own money, but instead does it himself. Props to you Jacob, I'll be here long as you last 👏👏
Hopefully you support all RUclipsrs trying to make a change regardless of whether they ask their followers to donate or not. Making these videos isn’t easy or cheap. They’re using their money and time to make a video. If they’re genuinely trying to help make a change then you should support them. And definitely shouldn’t bash them.
Sneak in and clean it out for them, sign a petition, leave a bad review and encourage others to do the same (I was mostly kidding about sneaking in and cleaning it, but at the same time do you really think they feel pressure to?)
I remember going here and feeding the seals as a child, and what a gross place it was. Now as an animal activist and understanding what conditions these animals are really living in; it's great to see good people like you stepping up and trying to save these poor seals. I thank you for taking care of our sea life!
This is messed up. I am literally balling my eyes on how could people EVER think that this is ok to treat a animal like that. You’re doing a great job, Jacob. These seals NEED TO BE SAVED!!!! I will be with you all of the way!!!!!!!
I grew up near Morro Bay and I visited the Morro Bay “aquarium” a few times as a kid, since we were nearby. From what I remember it was even worse than Seaside. It was more of a seal exhibit than an aquarium. The seals were kept in a dark rectangle pool like Seaside but with no windows. I remember you could hear all the seals crying from the restaurant next door.
I remember going to the Flying Dutchman a lot when I was younger. I was always wanting to go see the seals. Then I got older and realized how terrible that place was.
the fact this man is always so lovely and funny compared to when he sees these beautiful creatures put at risk is heartbreaking the contrast between him joking around and happy and him seeing something that he can save is amazing.
Very thoughtful and informative documentary Jacob. Took my children there when they were toddlers almost 15 years ago and also thought that the seals habitat was way too small for the amount of seals in them and conditions were filthy...never been back since. Agree that something needs to be done to help them. Thank you for trying to help and raising awareness.

I appreciate how the documentary was short, straight to the point, as well as educational. 👏🏼 I will not be supporting Seaside Aquarium until better health precautions are being taken towards their animals. - Fellow Oregonian.

I've gone to the seaside aquarium when I was younger. I remember going to the Oregon coast aquarium not long after and finding it so much more beautiful and alive. And just like with your comparison in the video, the differences between the two hit hard.
seeing the side by side of the two aquariums just shows how terrible the conditions are. these poor seals don’t even know what they could be experiencing
There are scenes similar to this at SEA LIFE Hunstanton, UK. Massively over stocked tanks, and the seal pen was diabolical. The water was so green you couldn’t see the seals until they were literally pressed against the glass with rotting fish in it. There were far too many in a confined space and babies in little boxes that were trembling in their own waste. We came out devastated.
Omg that’s just shattering to hear. Why are people so darn cruel? Money hungry grubs out for a quick buck and not giving a crap about the poor animals that are suffering in order for them to do so. Breaks my heart…. I can’t even…. 😭
This is thought to watch, knowing that I went to that “aquarium” a few years ago and did that feeding without knowing any better. Thank you for calling them out and presenting this well researched piece to raise awareness. I sincerely hope to see some reform
@Nomable I'm interested what leads you to call this 'well researched?' Just looking at it objectively, there are no interviews with staff, managers, owners.. there's no footage or information regarding the other spaces available to the seals, just an admonition that he doesn't have that information... there are no interviews with people from the community.. The only interview is with with someone who has no personal experience with the Seaside Aquarium; who hasn't even been there for themselves. Jacob references the Oregon Coast Aquarium, but does no interviews with them either. If he did, they'd have spoken highly of the Seaside Aquarium. The Seaside Aquarium facilitates multiple sea turtle rehabs with the OCA every year, and operates as the northern branch of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, with the OCA being the southern branch. I'd be willing to speculate the OCA would have expressed how special the Seaside Aquarium is within the broader landscape of oceanic education and preservation.
@@JQ3B941 Hahaha, this just shows how completely clueless you guys all are. That water comes Directly from the ocean. Like, it was in the ocean a matter of minutes before it reaches the seals' tank; and is constantly being refreshed, flowing through and back out. As I've shared in a previous comment, this is a unique capacity the Seaside Aquarium has, which other aquariums don't. Others take municipal water, then mix salt to approximate actual ocean salinity, then employ large ozonators and scrubbers while constantly recirculating the same water over and over again. The water in those seals' tank is literally the best and freshest water the animals could possibly get, on par with being in the wild. Yep... ocean water isn't sparkling clean... gasp... 🤯
@OHGODOHNOITSASH Oh I did more than listen. I interfaced with Jacob while he was gathering data, so I know what he chose to leave out from his video. Dude shot off an email.. sorry, but there's just no way that's enough to qualify as thorough research. Jacob went to the Aquarium, but was too busy trying to get angles that might look bad to even read the pamphlet he got handed on his way in, which explains the seals' back tank 😂. Dude didn't even think to ask the staff any questions, interview them!? Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but this is an ill-researched hit piece at best, and is more like purposeful misrepresentation.
@OHGODOHNOITSASH And the really sad part is that Jacob's just doing this to make money off people like you, who don't know any better. And why should you, when he went to great lengths to misguide you?!
I’m so happy that we have people in this world as kind as you I don’t live in oregan I live in California but I was born in Washington and I to would love to help these wonderful animals
What’s really sad is the fact that I live in Oregon, and as a kid I would go to that aquarium SO much, and people can actually feed them! So many people haven’t washed their hands and fed them, getting them sick. And I hate it there, people throw them trash and stuff like that and the staff don’t do anything about it. I can’t believe that those seals are in this horrible condition
I had gone to the Morro Bay aquarium and I thought that was the place you were talking about. You made my day when you said it was shut down. I will share this as many times a possible. I wish this facility would be shut down and the animals relocated, but I know you are going about this the right way! I am a sharer in your beliefs on the treatment and quality of life for all living creatures especially those at the hands of humans. I am behind you and your mission 100%. I pray that all of this will change for the better, at this facility and all others! God Bless you and the work that you are doing!
I've been there before..and I'm truly and deeply appalled at myself for having gone in and not thought about of the things you pointed out..thank you for beginning this narrative. I hope that we can get this place shut down
I really hope you accomplish your goal Jake, as a fellow animal lover this is heart wrenching and hard to even watch. This is basically the joe exotic seal aquarium. I would happily donate a little bit of money to help free these poor seals!
This is beyond heartbreaking... WHY 😭 How could people do this and actually go there to support this! How hasn't the public closed this down decades* ago!
I am glad you are covering this. I went there a few years ago with my grandparents and was shocked at this facility. The sheer amount of seals in such a small place was baffling, they were practically sliding over each other all the time, constantly doing “cute” actions to draw people in to feed them first (absolutely begging/non natural behavior), and I was terribly worried that kids might stick their fingers through the grate and get bit too! The seals did not go into the back room once because the small water section was where the food is. I’m not kidding when I say there was 11 seals in a space smaller than my single size dorm from college. I heavily regret spending any money there- but didn’t want to spoil my grandparents’ trip they planned for me. (I did refuse to feed the seals though, no way I was going to contribute to that.) I was hoping the fish section would be better, but it wasn’t. Definitely will never go again. 😔 Seaside is beautiful.. but if you go, please avoid this place! It’s not hard to find seals in the wild for free on the west coast- so just do that instead from a respectful distance! It’s best to see animals where they belong and you can learn more about their natural behaviors/habitat. The fish and tanks were nothing worth seeing either.
Hey Jacob! I'm a student of the MOA program at forest Grove middle school and what's sad is that a group of middle schoolers are doing a better job of taking care of fish then adults. We clean tanks daily and make sure they are fed. Also congrats on almost 3 mil 😀😀
Thank you so much for helping sea animals your one of the most kindest ones.. a lot of people nowadays help animals which are on surfaces and only the ones like cats dogs and some other easy ones. They don’t even care about the ones who are endangered and most who want to help us children like me I always wanted to give freedom to animals that are suffering from the smallest of the biggest problems.. I want to this to both sea and surface animals but I just don’t know how…
I was waiting for this searching it up yesterday forgot that it released on Friday, thank you for putting light on these bad like really bad aquariums. Hope for these seals to get a better lives.
I couldn’t watch it all. This is beyond heartbreaking! Seeing them all crowded together begging for food and attention brought tears to my eyes. I sincerely hope this prompts the necessary change. I respect your passion and love of ocean life.
From a lifetime of working in animal rescue (dogs, horses, livestock), I thought I had been hardened to the willful ignorant cruelty of the world, I thought that at least public places have standards.... But seeing those seals, stressed expressions, waving their flippers for food thrown by loud strangers in a pool with no sunlight absolutely broke my heart all over again as if I was 7 years old and just watched the movie Andre for the first time. Thank you for boldly exposing this business. I wish everyone were this protective of the beings we share this planet with.
@@mongoose1.7mviews2daysago7 Don’t. The seals are happy, they have no medical issues, and they are not stunted. Do not rescue them. If you even call that “rescue”. STOP
Thank you for caring so much for these animals. They obviously need help. You have taught me so much about marine animals. The Denver Aquarium in Colorado has a place to feed sting rays but they don't have people wash their hands first. Because of what you taught me I will be messaging them about this unsanitary practice.
The comparison between the two aquariums made me so upset. It is really nice you are pushing for change and trying to bring light to this disgusting act and facility. Why wouldn’t workers notice and try to change it themselves? It’s crazy that stuff like this is allowed to happen in the modern day. Makes me very sad, but also very motivated to change stuff like this. Rock on Jacob!
No aquariums are good. Animals should not be exploited and caged or sealed in tanks. This is not natural. All creatures deserve to be free and own themselves. You have no right to make any creature suffer. Partial slavery is wrong when humans are concerned. What's different about partial animal slavery and exploitation.
@@sumiresbread372 oh I was trying to say that if a pet fish lived in a glass jar for his entire life and then was put in the middle the ocean that it would die faster then it would if it lived in a glass jar
This is one of the reviews I found. "The sea lions have so much character! I'd prefer to see some of the fish in bigger tanks but I also wouldn't want to compromise the historical integrity of the building. Regardless, it was a pleasant experience..." Funny way to describe neglect. And historical integrity? Makes me sick to think anyone would think that would ever be priority over life. Many were also describing it as a great place to learn about wildlife.
They didn’t even get the species right. They’re harbor seals not sea lions. They’re in different taxonomical families. The Phocidae, which are true seals and the Otariidae, which are the sea lions and fur seals.
Wow we are so lucky to have you helping look out for our sea and marine life and I'm sure more. Your heart is huge 💞 🙏 thank you from the bottom of my heart. May God Bless you!
Releasing them would probably just be worst to them, at least trapped, they get some food and water, but in the wild (they lived their whole lives being cared for) they would not survive
I think sometimes people get confused and will dislike something because the content is so sad, not realizing they are not supporting a good cause. They just think that's so awful what they are doing to these animals so they thumbs down it.
Bruh I remember when this guy had under 5k subs, and he just go rescue shrimp. As a cherry shrimp owner it was an ez sub. Glad to see he gotten so many subs. Keep up the great work.
Oregon native here. I only recently (within the last few years) visited Seaside and was absolutely shocked to learn that they had an aquarium inside that tiny building. It was closed the last time I went to Seaside, and I was at least thankful for that. I’ve been to the Oregon Coast Aquarium more times than I can count since I was a child, and never once felt that the animals there didn’t have a quality life. To draw a small comparison, I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen the Giant Pacific octopus they have at the OCA because it has so many places to hide in its habitat. I cannot imagine the stress the octopus at SA feels because it legitimately cannot be left alone. Thank you for bringing this mistreatment to light, Jacob. Thank you for using your platform and your voice to speak up for those that cannot.
I feel awful for these seals, this is one of the many reasons I want to be a Marine Biologist. Sea life should be admired, but not imprisoned for human delight. Its just sad, I hope these seals get out and are rehabilitated. The seals in the Seaside Aquarium look sad, it’s really awful
the sad thing is the seals might never be aloud to go into the wild and be free because the seals are relying so much on peopleto feed them and not to find food themselves. Its so horrible these seals deserve better.
This is absolutely heartbreaking. The condition of that exhibit (from what I can see) is horrific and I can only imagine what the one they refuse to let you see is like. Thank you for all you are doing for these seals. I truly hope you are successful.
Wow. There is something about keeping an animal, in proper conditions, you can support. But even the small changes you are asking for, isn't enough. I have been to an aquarium. It was nothing like this and such good treatment, and space, of animals. How can Seaside Aquarium be OK with any of this? Just they daily space for these seals, is not anywhere near enough. I am so glad you care enough to make this post. Ask for changes and make sure something happens.
I was born and raised in Oregon and still live in my hometown. So many of my happiest moments are the days spent exploring the Oregon Coast withy family and friends. My favorite thing to do on a weekend is drive to the coast and spend the day exploring tide pools and all the amazingly beautiful things the Oregon Coast has to offer. I am so happy to see someone so dedicated to these animals. Thank you, Jacob. My heart hurts for these amazing animals. I pray that they will one day have the space and beauty that the proper facility has to offer and if possible be returned to the wild. Edit: I just noticed the amount of dislikes and I am baffled. How could anyone dislike a video that is trying to save animals. They don't have a voice so they rely on us. I have never and will not give the Seaside Aquarium my money or support until they care for these animals properly.
The sad thing is this isn’t the first person to have concerns about the animal’s safety. The Dodo 🦤 in 2018 released an article on this aquarium due to the poor conditions and resulted in the same non-responses. They even stated they normally don’t feed the seals in the summer due to the tourists hand feeding fish. This is not okay.
Jacob, you should have a petition for the whole aquarium shut down, because the octopus, fish, sharks, and other marine life have horrible lives too. LIKE SO HE CAN SEE THIS! #SaveTheSeals
Oh wow I have been to the seaside aquarium so many times since I live close to seaside and I have never really thought about it but you have opened my eyes. Thank you Jacob And the world is hearing your message
As a person that normally asks to save the Polar bears, these seals deserve better. Save the seals. They are an important, cute, and key part to the ecosystem!

Hi, Jake! I just found your RUclips channel through TikTok and the first video I was shown was your teaser for this mini documentary. I really appreciate how you're using your channel to educate people for the benefit of marine wildlife, both in Oregon, and around the world. As a fellow Oregonian, I've been to Seaside plenty of times, but I've never been to the Seaside Aquarium, as a small aquarium never appealed to me and I much prefer the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. I'm glad I never went. I heard some bad stories from friends about the conditions there, but I had no idea that they had sea lions in there, let alone that many! It's so incredibly heartbreaking. I feel especially sorry for the octopus in that aquarium, considering how intelligent and reclusive they are. Thanks for raising awareness on this issue, Jake! You just earned yourself a new subscriber!
Ok so let me get this straight; this goddamn aquarium has been open for over 75 years and there was no health inspector who shut it down? TISK TISK TISK AMERICAN PUBLIC
Other countries have even worse laws for how aquariums and zoos keep animals. I remember seeing a video of a zoo in china where the animals looked sickly and some couldnt move
@@anonymousfox777 so, because other countries have shitty animal welfare laws, we should be okay with this place being open for this long? Was that your point? Because that's what it sounds like your saying. Just because something else is terrible doesn't mean this can't be an issue too. Like saying "who cares that the enclosure is dirty? You are a remarkable young man, Jacob. You work so hard to help living creatures that others just pass by or don’t even think about, and you use your creativity, knowledge, research, and even wonderful sense of humor to try to reach those people and encourage a change in the way they view and think about animal welfare for the good, which will then hopefully encourage them to start to make big waves of change at this facility and others like it! I live in Massachusetts and have been to and seen many videos of The New England Aquarium many times and, it seems, that they are trying very hard to rescue and rehabilitate many species of ocean life and care very much about the welfare of their animals. What they’re doing at that Seaside Aquarium is despicable, disgusting and infuriating and the owners should be ashamed of themselves!! I will try to figure out how to go to their website and tell them just that! Thank you for all you do for all living creatures and how talented and creative you are at what you do and how you do it! 🤓💕

Yes, absolutely.

@@zoefenton- the quality of the water is bad enough

@@ophilianecr where did I say that it's okay? I was trying to say that other countries have just as bad or worse baseline conditions for animals in captivity. Obviously it's not ok if everyone else does it that was literally a point in the video?
@@anonymousfox777 omfg, i ASKED you what you meant because your poor writing made it seem like you're pointing out worse conditions in other countries, after OP talked about the American people failed these animals. If you had better communication skills, people would understand what you mean, instead of trying to figure it out with half assed babbling thoughts.
Great work sir. One of my best friends is a marine biologist, I sent him this video and he’s in full support and planning to fly out soon.
I can't believe how much the seals have been through. I mean who would do such a thing! That is so rude!
And it's really nice of you to help
We all will support you. Don't worry we are here for you, you can do it! We believe in you
Dude. Thank you for educating me about this horrible practice. Your videos are usually fun and funny, and they make me chuckle and smile. It honorable for you to deviate from your happy content to shine a light on such a terrible situation. It’s sad there is a need to post this video.
It is disgusting this is allowed in the USA. I wish they would shut it down and close the doors to this hell on Earth. Thank you for fighting the fight for these defenseless creatures on this planet we share. End this sadness, now.
Jacob is a man of God and nature!
Thank you bro for doing this!
Proud to be your subscriber!!! 🍪
Same I love being a subscriber

Thank you for all that you do Jacob. This is absolutely disgusting of what humans can do to these helpless animals. We will be with you all of the way. SAVE THE SEALS!!!!
They all look so emotionally disturbed... praying for abundant help, for the help it will take for positive change and education, overseeing what needs to happen in a state that considers itself to be Gods country ! 🙏🏻🤲🏻
Don't pray.

I’m glad you are fighting for this! Everyone should be born with freedom at least! 👍🏻
It made me cry I am a big animal lover and to see this happen to one of my many favorite animals wants me to push more to help all the ways I can I hope that people will be inspired by you and try there best!!
You and your love and dedication for these adorable animals is sooo admired. The world needs more people like you, you're amazing!!
You can make a difference and be amazing too. Choose to be vegan and stop the exploration and suffering of billions of animals on this planet per year. You too can be the change you want to see in this world.
You are a Legend helping these Animals! Keep it up!
This is so sad! Good Job, Jacob you’re changing the world. 💙
This video is why I turned notifications on. Thank you so so much for doing this.
Your amazing. Sticking up for those who can’t speak up for themselves (animals) I love watching your channel and see all the animal rescues even if it’s just taking parasites off of shrimp and the education you provide. 👌🏻❤️ let’s see a shut down or see changes to the pathetic aquarium. Those poor animals definitely need it. They don’t look happy at all and it’s totally animal cruelty.
“Pathetic aquarium” No.

Good bless you for helping to make this world a better place
Way to go Jacob. It's refreshing to see people who care and are trying to help neglected animals. ✌️❤️
I came here to leave a like for the seals
Thank you for caring about Animals this much
The world’s really unfair isn’t it?
They treat animals like they have no feeling and they feel no pain
I literally cried
This video made me more determined to be a Veterinarian
Now that I see this comment, I am more encouraged and determined to become a veterinarian.
Now that I see this I am more determined to be a zoologist/animal activist. Thank you
I cried too, it hurts so much to see animals suffering. And for the REST OR THEIR LIFE?! They have to live in there for so long.. it’s heartbreaking. This is one of the reasons I’m vegetarian.
@@scarysoscary Only a vegetarian? Educate yourself on how dairy animals are treated, exploited and how they suffer as well. Same for chickens. The factory farming of chickens is way more disgusting than how these seals are being treated. It's easy to find info on the subject. Be a vegan and really make a difference on preventing animals from suffering.
I also want a be a veterinarian to save animlas
It really is so hart braking that 6 generation of those seals have been kept captive in a really bad condition all people should support such videos all please share it's my request
This is heartbreaking. I hope these animals get justice and get to experience a good life
