My mom's big white livestock guardian dog really mellowed out once she hit 3 years old. It was like a light switch and she became mature all of a sudden. Now she strolls the property like a wise old sage 😂
Every time Abby jumps, gently raise your knee. It puts an obstacle between you and her and discourages that behavior. If you back up,all it does is show her that what she is doing is effective.It's worked for every dog I've trained.
@@judykinsman3258 being in a down position is helpful because they are not going to jump up as easily afterwards. If you just want them to get off of you, they can easily get back on again.

I think a big problem when assessing Abby is that you're comparing her to Toby. With Toby you kind of hit the genetic lottery. Toby has been a damn near perfect guardian dog from day 1. Those are massive boots, or paws, to fill. She's still in her puppy/fear period, but she'll get there eventually.
Can't believe Abby is a year and a half already, time truly flies by. So hoping Toby never has a relapse of lymes, it's a good idea to keep an eye out, but hopefully he will test clear. Always great to see how happy all the animals are, how much the birds love their new home and how well they get along. Thanks Morgan for the update, see you soon!
If you want to improve Toby's relationship with the car and leash, it can help to take him fun places like pet stores, a friend's house, dog park etc. If the only time he interacts with those triggers is for bad stuff, it is going to be more stressful. I know his happy place is the farm, but little steps can go a long way. For example, if you travel a short distance to pick up the mail, see if you can bring Allison and Toby sometimes so he can be in the truck but isn't alone and can learn that the truck isn't always a scary thing. As for the vet appointments, if the farm is fine during the day, taking both dogs next week can offer doggie support, and let Toby go when he isn't being seen for some desensitization training.
@@vonvielfalt right. Car+leash does not equal people. He's already friendly with his people and wary of those who are not, because that's literally their job. LSGs aren't like Service Digs who have a job but also have off time. Abby and Toby find work and the farm in general fun, even when they aren't patrolling. And when they aren't patrolling or having fun, they deserve to rest. Not to mention that a LSG going some place just to be social runs the very high risk of bringing poor behavior or communicable diseases back to the farm.
Toby’s resistance and then surrender to the vet trip is so sad. He shuts down a little when he realizes what you are intending but once the panic passes he’s so resolved about just following you into battle (albeit while pouting). It just points out how connected you two are in a relationship like none other you have on the farm. He doesn’t like it - but he trusts you entirely and will walk into the building with shiny floors and a ceiling and people with needles again and again if that’s what his dude says is up that day.
I have a Pyrenees/maremma named Donato who is absolutely telepathic … only four months old … but if I call him over to do something that he won’t want to do… he shies away … but for anything else like giving attention or feeding he comes over nicely… he has trouble with car rides if he’s eaten recently and he somehow knows when I’m calling him to me when it’s for a car ride without the car even being in sight… I know it’s not literal telepathy and most likely subtly body language that I’m not literate in despite speaking it somehow 🤓
I lost my 15 year old maremma sheepdog almost a month ago. I always enjoyed watching your dogs but now that Connie is gone, I love watching them even more. Her canine "brother" and feline "flock" also seem to miss her as much as I do. She was the matriach and the stabilizer of the pack. We are all lost without her. I am so glad I can still have her with me by watching your pups.
Yea, but she was full spayed tho tmk, which can cause behavior issues, tho at least it was a later spay (which per the research, is less likely to cause the behavior issues and cancers [tho increased mammary cancer -- but net, the longer exposure to hormones the less overall cancer and behavior issues per recent research]). it can messes with the stress response, making some dogs more reactive/unstable, iirc via reduceing serotonin, which helps regulate emotion (the research in dogs is mostly all behavior, the research in rodents and humans is very thorough tho so the biological mechanisms are somewhat understood. Look up rodents + anxiety/depression/cognitive decline + gonadectomy for rodent research, look up anxiety+ dogs + neutering or similar keywords for the research in dogs. Parsemus foundation has a page on hormone sparing sterilization that has links to a lot of the overall research). So, she may change, but with spaying, the behavior issues can actually worsen (tho later behavior issues can be due to chronic pain issues, which the spay being later reduces possiblity on). Hopefully she does mature into a great working dog 🤞
I don't think people realize just how great you've done with Abby! Livestock Guardian Dogs aren't considered mature until 2-3 years old and for you to have trained her so well considering how wild she was when she was a young puppy. She just needs a little more time to get that mature mindset. My Anatolian Shepherd is FINALLY getting into that work mindset and he's a month out from his 2nd birthday and that is common for a lot of LGDs, especially those being trained for poultry.
It's great to see Abby making so much progress. It also seems she's chilled out in energy a LOT! Cuz Toby's actually playing with her of his own initiative now.
I've noticed that too .. now they share a home so to speak they have become really close. Or at least that's what I see. I wonder if they 'talk' about the day and what went well and what didn't... I can imagine Toby sitting there like a big brother and explaining what she did wrong and suggesting other strategies to Abby

I used to be against those shock collars until I met my daughters, best friend’s dachshund. He is the most yappy barky dog for no reason. They go everywhere in public and it’s really embarrassing he’s so noisy. She got him one of those shock collars. One that beeps, vibrates and also shocks. She’s only used the vibrate function and it works amazingly. All she has to do is put it on him now and he actually relaxes and enjoys the people around him. Thanks for changing my mind about this tool. If in the right hands, that are totally worth it. ❤

Watching Abby around the bird, and she will be perfectly fine and a great addition to that protects for them! Beautiful pair of dogs, Toby’s no nonsense attitude and genuine kindness around the birds I think has rubbed off on abbey now. I really can’t see much getting past their guard now that they’re both old enough to handle the duties. Very enjoyable watching them in your videos!
I am do proud with how well you have tackled Abbey , her training and her strengths and flaws. No dog is "perfect" but they are perfectly flawed. You've done amazing Morgan and have a beautiful powerful bond with your dogs. It's like no other. Keep it up and love life. Xx
just a tip from a Canadian, for your chicken coop doors you should create a frame with a 3 inch lip on the bottom then put the door on that bottom lip to stop the door from freezing to the ground and dragging
I thought I had noticed Abby being more obedient (shows that you've worked more with her !) but not being a dog owner I wasn't sure. It does make sense, Toby never needed the repetition of an obedience training, he does what he wants because what he wants matches what you need. It doesn't sound like a big deal that Abby will resume wearing her buzzing collar. She won't be deprived of her freedom and that will allow you to keep working with her. She'll be an amazing guard dog when she's ready. I'm also curious if you're gonna train her for cattle. You've said before that it would suit her, and in a few years you might have the need on the upper field. It might just all work out in the long run :)
She’s a puppy. Giant breed dogs don’t mature as quickly as smaller dogs. Though my Pyrenees was a very serious boy from birth. He preferred work to play from the get-go.

Please get your dogs vaccinated for Heartworms. I was told in my area that there was a very low chance to get Heartworms. Well after the neighbor let their Pool go Green and have Old Tires laying around my Dog got Heartworms. It's very sad to have to limit her activity so that the treatment doesn't kill her from worms clogging her veins or heart or a worm breaking apart and causing a stroke. Heartworms come from Mosquitos which live in stagnant water. Please have them tested and either Vaccinated Yearly or give Pills Monthly. Your dogs are vital to your business and I don't want them or you to go through what I'm experiencing. Peace from WV
For jumping, say “no” in a firm voice and turn your body so your back is facing them. Ignore. Dogs crave interaction and praise and sometimes they can get a bit confused if you’re saying no jumping but still interacting. Once they calm down, they can get praise. I’ve found it super helpful for jumpy pups that are having a hard time learning “down”. Rerouting the behavior by telling them to sit is also helpful if they’re great at that command. Another tip, maybe use the word “settle” instead of down to see if she can catch onto a new term now that she is a bit older.
I think I have forgotten what snow is like. There was no snow in my area of NC this season. Toby and Abby both have blossomed so much. Abby seems to have come into her own with learning and growing. Toby is so amazing!! I re-watched the July 9th video where Toby was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Seeing him limp broke my heart, just like it did when I first saw that video. Abby has grown so much since last summer! In my opinion, Toby has played a huge role in her maturing into the calm, obedient dog she is. I love how GoldShaw farm has provided constant content and want to thank you, once again, for doing all you do! Take care.
Abby's progress has been amazing. Her behavior with the birds seems to have improved dramatically. But you don't want to set her up to fail when the birds are free ranging again. Figure out what situations and what times of day she's most likely to get overstimulated and make sure she's either supervised or kenneled at those times. You and she are doing great though 👍
The e-collar is an amazing training tool. Our pup can be off leash on hikes with us and her obedience is on point thanks to the collar. Good work Morgan and AbbyDog❤❤
The downside I see with the e-collar, that some owner get "trigger - happy" with them. If used thoughtfully, in consideration to the dog's sensitivity, than it could be a useful tool.
@@wotan20 Some people use it as a control tool instead of a training tool. This is where things start to get wrong. Those shocks are easy enough to ignore once you (um, the dog) get used to them. So the dog gets desensitised when they're used all the time, and the owner needs to crank up the intensity more and more...until they really get into the hurting and damaging range.

Lime disease is such a serious issue for dogs and humans. Lime disease can cause lingering disabilities more so than a lot of people think. I’m so glad you pay such close attention to Toby dogs health. He’s such a good dog ❤
My dog is not good with the younger birds. He’s great with the ones he’s known longer but the younger ones he’s not really fond of so I have to make sure he stays by me because he will chase them. He’s a work in progress lol it’s okay to admit. I still love him and call him my farm dog cuz he does provide protection from coyotes ❤
my Dad told me stories about the dog on their farm in romania in the 70s. his dog was very smart he only ate the neighbors chickens but not their own :D
You've done so well with Abby-Dog - and I do believe it's better to veer on the side of caution. I don't know anything about pup training, but I would imagine that a lapse would be a reinforcing event which would take so many days and weeks and hours to get past and it would be a pity to loose the traction you have both worked so hard for.
My large dogs just hit the 3 year mark and they have chilled out so much. I didn’t feel like I was getting where I wanted to with them and now suddenly they’re so well behaved. My female was a lot like Abby at her age too. I think time will help a ton
This is sooo weird thing in American culture. The dog is amazing, the trainer is amazing, the vet is amazing, why the hell thinhs are not working then?
I think you have a wonderful philosophy, and good follow - up practice about your farm, as well as your guardian dogs. I believe Abby shall turn out to be a good dog thanks to you, as well as Tobby dog. I'm also grateful that you never chained your dog, (because that would've been absolutely terrible), but instead you let them roam freely most of the time. Needless to say, this helps them to maintain both their physical and mental health. Anyone can see, that you practice proven, good animal husbandry all around.
Toby/Abby constellation: pure Dominance behaviour. Just look at Toby's face when you were talking about and petting Abby. He's definitely unhappy about the attention Abby was getting. Abby mounting Toby is also displays of dominance. They'll sort it out. Abby's a bit pushy and Toby is such a gentleman. So good for him if he sits on her face.- Puts her in her place..lower down the rank. There can only be one boss, and that is you, Morgan.
The stim on the e collar tech ecollars is not painful or a shock. It’s a tens unit, that stimulates the muscle. The e collar tech collar does not even produce heat btw!

According to the Lyme specialist I saw after I had Lyme, flare-ups are caused by the immune system, not the virus. The Lyme bacteria doesn’t come back - the immune system just thinks it does, and it starts attacking cells in joints and muscles that aren’t actually infected. This can happen for about a year after infection. There’s also not much you can do about it
Though it's difficult, try to not be stressed about the vet visits. Dogs read humans better than humans do. Toby will pick up on it and be more stressed himself.
Sometimes dogs just come out different than what they're bred to be. I have a rescue who's a hunting dog mix, and he was adopted out as a pet because of his low prey drive. It took him less than a week to realize that my indoor cats are friends and he hasn't chasen them since. Of course he's more into animals outside, but if he sees for example a rabbit, he's able to just turn away from it when I tell him to. But he's often more interested in smells than whatever I say, so I don't let him off-leash unless we're in a fenced area.

I’m glad you finally started Abby on the shock collar program. It was so painful to watch her chase birds while you screamed NO and she just ignores you. Our duck hunting dogs were all trained with a collar and it was extremely effective. Don’t be afraid to use the shock of vibrations don’t get her attention. It doesn’t even hurt and at the end of the day she has KILLED birds so a mild shock is pretty reasonable punishment to prevent the death of another bird.
Nice dogs. We have 3 allso. Large german shepard male, labrador mix and a great pyreneese puppy 3months. You live in a farm w farm stuff, we live in the woods w forrest stuff, here in Finland. God bless 🙏

Beautiful pair of dogs, Toby’s no nonsense attitude and genuine kindness around the birds I think has rubbed off on abbey now. I really can’t see much getting past their guard now that they’re both old enough to handle the duties. Very enjoyable watching them in your videos!
I am do proud with how well you have tackled Abbey , her training and her strengths and flaws. No dog is "perfect" but they are perfectly flawed. You've done amazing Morgan and have a beautiful powerful bond with your dogs. It's like no other. Keep it up and love life. Xx

just a tip from a Canadian, for your chicken coop doors you should create a frame with a 3 inch lip on the bottom then put the door on that bottom lip to stop the door from freezing to the ground and dragging
I thought I had noticed Abby being more obedient (shows that you've worked more with her !) but not being a dog owner I wasn't sure. It does make sense, Toby never needed the repetition of an obedience training, he does what he wants because what he wants matches what you need.
It doesn't sound like a big deal that Abby will resume wearing her buzzing collar. She won't be deprived of her freedom and that will allow you to keep working with her. She'll be an amazing guard dog when she's ready.
I'm also curious if you're gonna train her for cattle. You've said before that it would suit her, and in a few years you might have the need on the upper field. It might just all work out in the long run :)

She’s a puppy. Giant breed dogs don’t mature as quickly as smaller dogs. Though my Pyrenees was a very serious boy from birth. He preferred work to play from the get-go.
This is really important. Give her til 3 to see her long term maturity.
It's good you are being cautious and careful with Abbey's training. You want to set her up for success which means eliminate opportunity to fail.

Please get your dogs vaccinated for Heartworms. I was told in my area that there was a very low chance to get Heartworms. Well after the neighbor let their Pool go Green and have Old Tires laying around my Dog got Heartworms. It's very sad to have to limit her activity so that the treatment doesn't kill her from worms clogging her veins or heart or a worm breaking apart and causing a stroke. Heartworms come from Mosquitos which live in stagnant water. Please have them tested and either Vaccinated Yearly or give Pills Monthly. Your dogs are vital to your business and I don't want them or you to go through what I'm experiencing. Peace from WV

For jumping, say “no” in a firm voice and turn your body so your back is facing them. Ignore. Dogs crave interaction and praise and sometimes they can get a bit confused if you’re saying no jumping but still interacting. Once they calm down, they can get praise. I’ve found it super helpful for jumpy pups that are having a hard time learning “down”. Rerouting the behavior by telling them to sit is also helpful if they’re great at that command. Another tip, maybe use the word “settle” instead of down to see if she can catch onto a new term now that she is a bit older.
I think I have forgotten what snow is like. There was no snow in my area of NC this season. Toby and Abby both have blossomed so much. Abby seems to have come into her own with learning and growing. Lyme disease is terrible to deal with so fingers crossed Toby Dog remains safe. Awesome videos and your new bull is really adorable💞💞💞🐕🐄🐔🐣💞💞💞

Toby is so amazing!! I re-watched the July 9th video where Toby was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Seeing him limp broke my heart, just like it did when I first saw that video. Abby has grown so much since last summer! In my opinion, Toby has played a huge role in her maturing into the calm, obedient dog she is.
I love how GoldShaw farm has provided constant content and want to thank you, once again, for doing all you do! Take care.
Abby's progress has been amazing. Her behavior with the birds seems to have improved dramatically. But you don't want to set her up to fail when the birds are free ranging again. Figure out what situations and what times of day she's most likely to get overstimulated and make sure she's either supervised or kenneled at those times. You and she are doing great though 👍

The e-collar is an amazing training tool. Our pup can be off leash on hikes with us and her obedience is on point thanks to the collar. Good work Morgan and AbbyDog❤❤
The downside I see with the e-collar, that some owner get "trigger - happy" with them. If used thoughtfully, in consideration to the dog's sensitivity, than it could be a useful tool.

@@wotan20 Some people use it as a control tool instead of a training tool. This is where things start to get wrong. Those shocks are easy enough to ignore once you (um, the dog) get used to them. So the dog gets desensitised when they're used all the time, and the owner needs to crank up the intensity more and more...until they really get into the hurting and damaging range.

Lime disease is such a serious issue for dogs and humans. Lime disease can cause lingering disabilities more so than a lot of people think. I’m so glad you pay such close attention to Toby dogs health. He’s such a good dog ❤
My dog is not good with the younger birds. He’s great with the ones he’s known longer but the younger ones he’s not really fond of so I have to make sure he stays by me because he will chase them. He’s a work in progress lol it’s okay to admit. I still love him and call him my farm dog cuz he does provide protection from coyotes ❤
my Dad told me stories about the dog on their farm in romania in the 70s. his dog was very smart he only ate the neighbors chickens but not their own :D

You've done so well with Abby-Dog - and I do believe it's better to veer on the side of caution. I don't know anything about pup training, but I would imagine that a lapse would be a reinforcing event which would take so many days and weeks and hours to get past and it would be a pity to loose the traction you have both worked so hard for.
My large dogs just hit the 3 year mark and they have chilled out so much. I didn’t feel like I was getting where I wanted to with them and now suddenly they’re so well behaved. My female was a lot like Abby at her age too. I think time will help a ton

Any training is better than NO training, as I am seeing while dog sitting for an untrained dog. My dog is well trained!
This is sooo weird thing in American culture. The dog is amazing, the trainer is amazing, the vet is amazing, why the hell thinhs are not working then?
I think you have a wonderful philosophy, and good follow - up practice about your farm, as well as your guardian dogs. I believe Abby shall turn out to be a good dog thanks to you, as well as Tobby dog. I'm also grateful that you never chained your dog, (because that would've been absolutely terrible), but instead you let them roam freely most of the time. Needless to say, this helps them to maintain both their physical and mental health.
Anyone can see, that you practice proven, good animal husbandry all around.

Toby/Abby constellation: pure Dominance behaviour. Just look at Toby's face when you were talking about and petting Abby. He's definitely unhappy about the attention Abby was getting. Abby mounting Toby is also displays of dominance. They'll sort it out. Abby's a bit pushy and Toby is such a gentleman. So good for him if he sits on her face.- Puts her in her place..lower down the rank. There can only be one boss, and that is you, Morgan.
The stim on the e collar tech ecollars is not painful or a shock. It’s a tens unit, that stimulates the muscle. The e collar tech collar does not even produce heat btw!

According to the Lyme specialist I saw after I had Lyme, flare-ups are caused by the immune system, not the virus. The Lyme bacteria doesn’t come back - the immune system just thinks it does, and it starts attacking cells in joints and muscles that aren’t actually infected. This can happen for about a year after infection. There’s also not much you can do about it
Though it's difficult, try to not be stressed about the vet visits. Dogs read humans better than humans do. Toby will pick up on it and be more stressed himself.
Sometimes dogs just come out different than what they're bred to be. I have a rescue who's a hunting dog mix, and he was adopted out as a pet because of his low prey drive. It took him less than a week to realize that my indoor cats are friends and he hasn't chasen them since.
Of course he's more into animals outside, but if he sees for example a rabbit, he's able to just turn away from it when I tell him to. But he's often more interested in smells than whatever I say, so I don't let him off-leash unless we're in a fenced area.
I’ve had Pyrenees my whole life, once they hit two years old it’s like a light switch. There’s no more puppy it’s all business. I know Abby and Toby are not great Pyrenees, but they seem to be similar in a lot of ways.

The great thing is that its going to be able to soak in too as it slowly melts. That will make the pasture more soft and grasses grow better.
I’m glad you finally started Abby on the shock collar program. It was so painful to watch her chase birds while you screamed NO and she just ignores you. Our duck hunting dogs were all trained with a collar and it was extremely effective. Don’t be afraid to use the shock of vibrations don’t get her attention. It doesn’t even hurt and at the end of the day she has KILLED birds so a mild shock is pretty reasonable punishment to prevent the death of another bird.
As someone whose life has been ruined by Lyme disease for decades my prayers are with Toby dog. 😢🙏
