Yeah I wonder if the game allows for perpetual motion because of how the lift works. If the lift goes forward you're technically able to maintain speed by having forwards an upwards lift. Of course this doesn't work in the real world, but Trailmakers physics is def not real world physics. If it is possible to have enough forwards lift to counteract the drag it's possible.

and considering how slow airplanes are compared to real life, it would support the idea of air jello. irl, a Cessna can easily achieve 200 kmh, in trailmaker, that's the speed of a fighter jet.
From what i remember, TM does not really have "air", the wings essentially reduce weight of the craft as a whole instead of producing lift. In most cases it is functionally the same, but effect is different when you get to extremes like this lowest speed.
Kosmo's new quantum drive warps up to a brisk jog's pace when you push the drive cores together super close. It's funny to watch. I wanted to compact the thing and it just crawled everywhere. Like a super slow mo vtol.
@@AgentWest There's definitely some kind of functional air resistance. Obviously your speed is affected by how aerodynamic the vehicle is, but it's also possible to build usable planes with no "lift" producing parts. You can still build functional flight control surfaces using only aerodynamic blocks, so the game is calculating differing air resistance around the airframe somehow.

In the seas expansion it can technically qualify as 0kph if we are going into the wind and the wind pushing backwards on the wing lets us float without falling and thrust pushing us with equal speed as the wind although he didn't say you have to go forward I think
I like your rules lawyering. "Hey, I have 0 relative groundspeed, it doesn't MATTER what my airspeed is!" Given that, it would be hilarious to build something that is FAST with a lot of lift and then just fly into the high winds at the perimeter till you achieve 0 groundspeed.
I think the lifting function of the wings might only "activate" at a certain speed, so that your plane doesn't float away for no reason when you park it. Seeing some pretty weird movements from scrapman's plane which might be explained by that.
Day two of I've got 3 ideas for you, 1: Player 1 builds a plane with wheels on the tips of the wings. Player 2 makes a runway with two lanes and a gap in between. Then land the plane on that runway. 2: Build a plane which can transform into a submarine upon contact with the water (like, wings turn in and stuff). 3: Test yours and your friends building skills by turning animals into a vehicles (maybe multiple animals per person but that might be too time consuming). Points for form and points for function
11:00 And this is when logic gates step in. Every logic gate have output slider, you can have as many power outputs you want essentially. So you have take off power and cruise power binded to differend buttons.
I built a helichopter during the campaign. I had modular wings and the chopper engine, but not copter blades. So I made a functionin copter with two pairs of spinning bits in opposite directions. It went up and controlled very well, but I couldn't get it to go down. It had so much lift that it just hovered in place with no power.
In the process of trying to make the slowest plane, you have essentially accomplished in making something akin to a balloon 😄😄😄 Congratulations sir, the Wright Brothers would be thoroughly confused o7
Scrapman i would like to see a 1v1v1v1 dogfight where everyone builds a plane and you randomly chose who gets whos plane you can get your own if you are lucky the creator also gets to chose the camera angel you have to use this can be a camera block.
This is a thing in real life too, they are called S-TOL (short take off and landing) competitions, the planes have to fly really slowly to land in a really short distance.
To use the same thruster for lift off and for maintaining a flight you can use a logic gate with a different key that has its output limited and the thrusters themselves have a key that is used to lift off. Hope this helps
ive been wondering if you're planning to continiue the random games series? it was really fun watching you play random games once in a while besides the main games. (also please continiue raft with kan, it got a lot of updates i think)
I just had a crazy idea. Very crazy. Scrapman level crazy. A dog fight challenge, but thrusters are stabilised to ALWAYS point horizontal. Mounted to your plane with a rotator and steering hinges, so as you roll left / right and as you pitch up / down, the thrusters stay level to the horizon. The thrusters may be mounted on the front OR the back (but not both). The challenge of it is, if you try to flight straight up vertically, front mounted thrusters will try to pull you straight, rear mounted thrusters will try to make you back flip. So, you will be forced to either climb and descend slowly OR build up speed and turn off thrust as you climb / descend fast.
Multiplayer suggestion. Dogfight but turrets are mounted facing upward on the plane rather than forward. This 1) makes it much harder to land a hit, changing dogfight dynamics 2) offers building restrictions considering the aerodynamics and range of the turrets to avoid shooting yourself and 3) gets rid of the high ground advantage because being above your opponent makes you easier to shoot, forcing battles down to an intensely close distance to the ground.
Using the wing piece with flaps is hurting your lift, they produce less lift than normal modular wings, you can just test this out by placing wings on build mode and watching the center of lift move.
...which would also give you a place for the vertical speed sensors to read true vertical speed. And having that information, you might be able to automate keeping a constant altitude.
Did you turn down the steering influence of the air resistance ailerons? I'm wondering if those might have been completely "on" and that was what was driving you sideways.
Scrap man, what if you do an air bike race? Basically create planes that uses bike seats but it has to be compact like this build or maybe with more blocks. Like 100 blocks and the race itself that the racers has to stay to the ground as much as possible, and you do crazy turns and such. Idk why but this video is giving me that idea.
The sideways motion is due to the sideways ailerons, a better way would be logic Like a front facing( 🐥) speed-sensor set to activate below threshold, set threshold to 3-4-5kmph and activate an and-gate with it, couple an or-gate set to space(for thrust) into the and-gate. Now you only have thrust if you press space and your speed is below the set threshold. If you crash, you are to slow... if still fly, set the speed a bit slower or… add wings AND set to a slower speed
So idk how this'll work in trailmakers, but you could tilt the wing tips up a little to make it naturally stay level. In real life, if it rolls to either direction, the angled tip on the downward side ends, generating more downward force pushing it back up, leveling it back out. Like is said, though. idk how well that'll work in trailmakers.
So you have stumbled across STOL (slow take off & land) aircraft. Entire real world competitions are held on this concept. Funnily enough, the speeds you managed to get down to are also comparable to the real world results. (Though admittedly, they often have a bit of a headwind)
RCE kind of faced the same problem when he made the video 2 years ago. He managed to take off at 1 mph, going 3-4 ish mph forward, but also gaining speed up to 30mph as the plane goes sideways.
ive had this idea on my mind for a little while: make a plane that can stop mid-air. like, youre flying and you press a key to just lose all/most momentum. this could be used for dodging missiles and stuff in battles. hope this idea makes sense and is actually possible :)
A slow vehicle in Trailmakers actually has a pretty big advantage. It can repair infinitely without a cooldown. The cooldown bar only appears when you're moving at a fast enough speed. If this plane had some extra thrusters to go super fast, and be able to brake down to a slow speed, repair, and continue going fast, it'd be very good in PVP.
Do 1v2 parasite fighters vs cargo plane.parasite fighter has 1 or 2 smart cannons and 30 block limit and cargo plane has 2 miniguns that are controlled by the cargo plane
RCE did this challenge a while ago, and I think he did go down to 1kph with like 20 stacks of wings :>. This was before the air update, so things may have changed
Indeed. ruclips.net/video/M_h5Vuu3fVs/видео.html RCE did this almost a year ago. (Before the airborne update; I don't know if that changed the physics of existing wings though.) He did it by just adding so many wings that any movement (including just from the wings flexing) created enough lift to get him airborne. So I don't know if that counts as actually flying or if its just using glitches.
You could have used an OR logic gate for the thruster power to be adjusted, keep the thruster’s settings at 10.00 and the logic at 0.25 or something, then set the logic gate and the thruster to diff buttons.
When I tried to make a glider I found that at a certain point when the lift to weight ratio is so low the plane starts defying physics and not increasing in speed no matter the angle
Imagine a battle but you can only use very small and underpowered motors, thrusters, wheels, and vehicles themselves but attach a gunpowder cannon to each and see how far it flings you back when you try to shoot the other player.
I love slow flying vehicles and wanna build one irl that flies slower then walking speed, but dirigibles go off course with a slight breeze and I never thought of just extreme lightweight plane.
I would be happy if you and some other guys could do a supercar/hypercar build battle with 3 catigories... looks(how realistic it looks), controlability(in that circuit race) and overall speed(either centrifuge or dragrace... maybe both)
My grandpa said he made a paper (?) and wood (?) plane that would float in place on the slightest draft. He used to make planes and would throw them out the window with his address on them so that if they were found the could be returned. This is one of the many he lost, I don't know if he threw it and it never came back or it just got damaged and someone threw it away, but I don't doubt it's real, given his experience in mechanics.
So I did some math and assuming 1m = 4 blocks, minimum speed of 5km/h, and standard Earth gravity and air density, this airplane has a maximum lift coefficient of 41.25 !!! For reference, your average real life airfoil will have around 1.5 for a plain clean wing and 2.4-3.3 with high lift devices (flaps, slats). I've looked around on the internet and the highest number I've come across was 12 for a crazy theoretical wing with powerful suction devices that wouldn't stall even at 70°AoA. Trailmakers has some real wacky physics when you push it to its limits
In KSP, at least last time I played it, if you built a plane like this, but with no engines and launched it with something like a rocket sled, your aerodynamic surfaces created forces when they actuated, which were sufficient to stay airborne indefinitely, and if fact made it IMPOSSIBLE to land, of you touched the controls while trying to do it.... Well outside of plowing it into the ground, but it mean a normal, soft landing was impossible. Because when you would try to pitch up to scrub away the last of your speed, you would actually gain speed and climb lol.
Scrapman here is a idea for you do a 1v1v1v1 by making a walking turrent and battle. You can also do a 2v2 that one person is shooting while the othr is controlling the walking turrent. Day 1.5 of asking scrapman to do this
Your comment on AOA is why we design flight computers with angle of attack and angle of sideslip as core sensors. We need to know those things. Hi my name is kederaji and I make planes.
The first plane reminded me of a falling leaf. So I thought can you make creations that fall the slowest without engine power/balloons ect. Like trees that drop those spinning seed pods that fall real slow
Next challenge: Flying as *low* as possible. Build a plane that can automatically keep a set altitude and see how low you can fly without touching the sea in this map or the ground in the test map. And of course, you'll want to go supersonic so that it's not too easy.
I think the normal modular wings have more lift than the flap wings when the flaps are not deployed.. scrapman keeps using flaps but then not deploying them Im only halfway through tho so he might enable them later
Can you make a video where there is for examble 2 or 4 teams. Every team has 2 players. Teams are trying to capture an object with a magnet. If you lose your object you are out. I tried my best in explaining the rules. English is not my first language:)
I mean I can get 0-1 kph, it just stays in the air until it picks up speed because of natural tilt but it's not controllable. With the amount of wings you put on it's already a glitched creation btw. As for controllable plane I don't see how it could steer at 2kph, so maybe 5 is the lowest, maybe it's not.
15:13 I love that he's got so much lift that his angle of attack is negative to maintain altitude
yeah 16:33 😅

Imagine if irl hovercraft was just a giant wing with insane lift.
this is how fast the plane feels like it's moving when there's a crying child sitting next to you
Scrapman here is a idea for you do a 1v1v1v1 by making a walking turrent and battle. You can also do a 2v2 that one person is shooting while the othr is controlling the walking turrent.
Day 1.5 of asking scrapman to do this
Scrapman - i need lift and to go slow (adds more wings)
Flaps - Am I a joke to you?
Your comment on AOA is why we design flight computers with angle of attack and angle of sideslip as core sensors. We need to know those things. Hi my name is kederaji and I make planes.
i think rce did this a while ago and got 1 kilometer per hour with a giant like 16 wing tall plane
the helicopter blades generate a lot of resistance making you just float, and they might work for what your trying to do.
I would think enabling some flaps could get you slower with fewer wings as well.
Plane Physics in real life: I want to go slow
Trail-makers plane physics: oh slow you say …
2:41 - yep. Journey before destination.
Something something sniper tanks vs low armored cars?
Sounds like a fun capture the flag type game for trailmakers
Cool. RCE acheived 1kph a year ago or something like that. It would be cool if there was a whole challenge to get the slowest vehicles
"It is just as much about the journey, as it is the destination"
- Scrapman 2023
Imagine a plane like this irl, like just seeing someone pretty much hover without any upwards propulsion
this would be an amazing ground attack plane, especially if you made it have a mode where it went 100kmph+, as well as almost being able to hover
0:03 this is genius plane design here
The first plane reminded me of a falling leaf. So I thought can you make creations that fall the slowest without engine power/balloons ect. Like trees that drop those spinning seed pods that fall real slow
the next Multiplayer Glider challenge is gonna be interesting
Next challenge: Flying as *low* as possible. Build a plane that can automatically keep a set altitude and see how low you can fly without touching the sea in this map or the ground in the test map.
And of course, you'll want to go supersonic so that it's not too easy.
6:34 this is a great example of the ground effect
more like 10:30
Adding stick with dynamite at the end and using this for fights would be awesome
i love how scrapman somehow made a plane slower then the car you start with in stranded in space
Reminds me of the glider I accidentally made in Main Assembly, it was unpowered and flew across the map whilst slowly falling upwards xD
I think the normal modular wings have more lift than the flap wings when the flaps are not deployed.. scrapman keeps using flaps but then not deploying them
Im only halfway through tho so he might enable them later
10:35 that thing looks like you're trying to control a sheet of paper when it's windy...
You should do a multiplayer challenge with this concept
Can you make a video where there is for examble 2 or 4 teams. Every team has 2 players. Teams are trying to capture an object with a magnet. If you lose your object you are out.
I tried my best in explaining the rules. English is not my first language:)
“I’m not German” 🤣🤣 thought you were AH for a second…
I mean I can get 0-1 kph, it just stays in the air until it picks up speed because of natural tilt but it's not controllable. With the amount of wings you put on it's already a glitched creation btw. As for controllable plane I don't see how it could steer at 2kph, so maybe 5 is the lowest, maybe it's not.
Good job Scrap Man, you successfully recreated a falling leaf 😂
