Many years ago in late 1970s when I was a student in Kolkata (then Calcutta) I remember the strictest teacher of the school, telling us about the courage that Israeli men and women had shown during the Six Days and the Yom Kippur wars. It impressed us because we hardly knew anything about your country. In retrospect I realized that he was also criticizing the Indian government for not establishing diplomatic ties with Israel.

This is really very informative. Over the years, the relationship between India and Israel has certainly improved, but India still has a warm connection with Palestine. It is certainly not an easy job, but it was never one. Very few countries share a warm relationship with both countries and you have rightfully described the balanced relationship. Today's India has a voice and it does not belong to an exclusive club. Israelis aren't stupid, they could see that verbal support for Arafat didn't hurt them and so sub-rosa ties if anything strengthened-R&AW got a lot of help from Israel from it's founding in the late 1960s being one of the quiet ties.
