New Gold Dream 81,82,83,84 is a particular favourite of mine. Their early Albums were more experimental. Sister Feelings Call and Son's and Facination were two Albums released on the same day, which are great. Their first Album was Life in a Day in 79. They started off as a Punk Band.

A minimum rating of A although this is probably A+ for this then junior in college in 1985...YES, I am an old man of 58!!
A + and I'm nearly 63. Still have the single record. The B side was basically just the music version of the song, so as it was the era of cassette tapes/recording, I added it to near the end of the A side to give it a 12" feel. Ahh so good.
61 here and this song is at least A+ for me! Guess you had to be there and live through the actual time when the vibe of this song so perfectly matched the era. This song gives me such great feels I can't even adequately explain.
My favourite Simple Minds song is the title track of the album "New Gold Dream". It has one of the most hard-driving, compelling beats of any Rock song. Do give it a listen.
The vocals and piano are good . I also like the "pause into piano with bass" too . "A-" from me . And great "message interp" from A&A . As in the game "jenga" , love can topple...and has to b built back up!
That wall of sound was amazing live, such a brilliant stadium band. You should try to check out some live versions from ‘Live in the city of light’. Its one of the best live albums ever pressed.
Alive and kicking when it came out, not so much these days! But it still feels like it was just yesterday. Sad to say that I just heard the news that Sinead O'Connor has died at the age of 56, I still think of her as a young girl, from the same era as Simple Minds.
I love how they add multiple layers of instrumentation. It always made the songs more interesting and more fun on future listens. This song is a solid A+ for me. I think Alex just doesn't care for 80's production which led to his B+.
This is definitely of its era, but they excelled at the later 80s pop rock production here. They have a terrific deep catalog, which is definitely more rock edgy. I would like "Promised You a Miracle" next.

The lyrics is what stand out for me. The chorus becomes a plea to the second subject to stay. Stay until the feelings match the reality of the relationship, until the love that is there is alive and kicking.
One of their biggest hits but nowhere near their best: Speed Your Love To Me, Up On The Catwalk, All The Things She Said, Sweat In Bullet, Changeling, Factory
For a deep dive on early Simple Minds, I recommend Pleasantly Disturbed from their 1st album, Life In A Day, This Fear Of Gods from Empire And Dance and Love Song from Sons And Fascination/Sister Feelings Call. These are all from before their album, New Gold Dream 81/82/83/84, which was, in my opinion their best album and is also much more radio friendly, but also still complex. They were much more experimental on their early albums. It’s definitely worth a deep dive to see where they came from. Saw them at the Orpheum in Memphis supporting this album... One of the most fun concerts I have ever attended. My face hurt from smiling! Incredible musicians (not just studio production chops) - the only other drummer that ever made me gasp like he did was Carter Buford... Amazing multi-instrumentalist guitarist... Just a great band!

Early simple minds was the best - this was their AOR phase to break through for the mainstream. Try next time "LOVE SONG" "WATERFRONT" "NEW GOLD DREAM"....
A lot of good ‘80’s music was a duet between vocals and drums. Song driven by melody sung on top propelled by drums rhythmically and sonically on the bottom. Springsteen (Born in the USA) did that too.
The best thing about Simple Minds was Jim Kerr’s attitude- there was some pre-Grammy promos and interviews and he completely took the piss in his interview 😂😂😂 - he was like “oh you mean the Granny’s? How boring!” in his fabulous Scottish accent…hilarious 🤣
Simple Minds is a pop rock cross over band. They were originally viewed as pop but as the 80’s changed they were viewed more in the rock. This is where you can usually find them on radio or music stores.”All the Things She Said” is pretty good.
I actually can't see how "don't you forget about me" is better than this song, but personal preference I guess. I think I appreciate the "wall of sound" that Alex thinks is too much.
A lot of these songs from the 80's were actually dance songs. You could go into a club in NYC and hear this song along with some traditional dance songs. The "wall" you hear worked very well pulsing through a club speaker system.
They were just one of the best at the classic 80's sound...Atmospheric, lots of space, big reverb on the drums, the synthesizer washes, the chorus effects on the guitars, and the very British, anthemic lead vocals...
My God I love this song so much, it's so great to hear it again, It evokes memories from one of the most incredible times in my life, 1985 when I ran away as a teenager, moved to California, an incredible time and I'm still here today!

Early simple minds was the best - this was their AOR phase to break through for the mainstream. Try next time "LOVE SONG" "WATERFRONT" "NEW GOLD DREAM"....
Couldn't agree more. I liked them in general but the more popular they became, the less I enjoyed them.
A soaring emotional landscape of a song
A. I rarely give pop songs this high of a rating. Simple Minds deserve it because they just knew how to write very good pop.
Modern English & INXS
"Don't Change a Thing "
Great tune by Modern English
Simple Minds is a pop rock cross over band. They were originally viewed as pop but as the 80’s changed they were viewed more in the rock. This is where you can usually find them on radio or music stores.”All the Things She Said” is pretty good.
Another magnificent masterpiece! A true classic. S Tier.
OMG this takes me right back to high school...ye gods, this was a great cruising song. This was so good to hear again..wish ya could have been there.
I recommend "She's A River" from the Simple Minds' album "Good News from the Next World."
Spent a lot of time in Europe in the 80's and everyone loved these guys. Also, may I say the boys are looking good these days.
My fav song of theirs is "Promised you a miracle"
A Classic 80s new Wave song- S-Tier to me- they have at least 7 or 8 songs you would consider A, A+ or S
Brilliant live
The woman singing in the background vocals sang for Bowie and Luther Vandross too! Super talented
Driving my Mustang GT convertible with this playing full blast....on I-95 through CT to NYC...late 80s. Everyone knew I was rocking out on this!
Never heard this before. Thanks for letting me hear it for the first and last time!
I thought you would like it way more, considering how pumped you were after the last Simple Minds song.
I actually can't see how "don't you forget about me" is better than this song, but personal preference I guess. I think I appreciate the "wall of sound" that Alex thinks is too much.
@@peterwalsh2470 I also prefer Don't You Forget About Me, but not to this extent.
A lot of these songs from the 80's were actually dance songs. You could go into a club in NYC and hear this song along with some traditional dance songs. The "wall" you hear worked very well pulsing through a club speaker system.
Interesting, I enjoy it as a driving in the car cranked loud on the highway song to sing along with.
@@stevenmix3723 No doubt....but when it first came out you could hear it on the radio and in the clubs. Double your pleasure!
John Cougar Mellencamp. Don’t need to love him but he was quite relevant to Rock history.
Yesssssss, this band is superb. Unique in vocals and music style. Excellent choice!
spot on with the resemblance to U2.
Makes me think of the first ever Premier League promo video for Sky in 1992….probably means nothing to almost anyone who sees this 😂
Haha!! I remember.. ⚒️ 😉
@@lubilou64 one of the campest things you’ll see 😂😂
