Hey Ashley. It's Pete Peterkin I was one of the songwriters working with Donny Hathaway before his death. (You Were Meant For Me/ Sunshine Over Showers) Just a quick correction on the 3 geniuses. That was Ray Charles not Stevie Wonder/ Anyway as a youngster with a guitar I just want to say that much of what you say is true. Altho he absolutely NEVER approached me in a way that would be considered gay. That's just for the record. You seem so young to have so much info at your fingertips. It really is quite impressive.

This man had schizophrenia and was severely ill. Yet, people believe he was murdered. That really pisses me off! People with schizophrenia have a high rate of taking their own lives. So why is his death a conspiracy? Do black folks believe we are immune to mental illness and taking our own lives? A mindset like that is WHY mental health in our community needs to be taken seriously.

I have worked as a psych nurse for the past 15 years. Paranoid schizophrenia usually presents when a person is a young adult or in the teens. It never goes away but decreases some later in life . The most common thing with people that have it or any mental illness , they feel better because of the meds and stop taking them . No one wants to take meds forever but like any illness that is chronic it is necessary. Schizophrenia causes people to hallucinate ( hear or see things that are not there) among other symptons. It sounds like Donny probably heard voices telling him to jump out of the window. A sad ending for a very talented man.

My ex-boyfriend was schizophrenic and it was very scary at times and confusing for me in the beginning because I didn't understand what was happening. There was one time I was standing in the mirror doing my hair and he kept looking at me crazy so I turned and asked him what his problem was and he said "You think I can't fucking see? You're throwing gang signs up at me!" I was so confused and we ended up having a big argument because he was so sure he had seen that. I didn't even know he was schizophrenic bc he never told me himself but I had a talk with his mother about some of the things that happened and she told me what was going on and that he was schizophrenic. She said he never had issues when he was younger but once he started doing the drug he was on that's when it came to the surface and they went to see what was up with him and he was diagnosed. I read that some drugs will cause underlying mental illnesses to show themselves. I thought he was just tripping because he was high as hell on what he had been doing. He wasn't on any medication so his hard drug use made the schizophrenia MUCH worse. I had to leave the relationship because I couldn't handle it. I hope he is getting some kind of help now.

The term schizophrenia derives from the racist ideologies of Europe. Eugene Bleuler, the Swiss man who coined the term, was a quack and a bigot. He advocated the murder of the patients he labeled schizophrenic. They were soon some of the first to die in the holocaust. The drugs they used then and now to "treat" it replaced the lobotomy because they also destroy the brain and body, but under the pretense of being therapeutic and not merely a tool of genocide. Donny Hathaway was not crazy. Racism was the problem.
His hostility towards women may have been due to the patriarchal teachings of Christianity, which say women are not equal to men.
People in his position are gaslit and abused and then blamed for crying for help for their wounds which I find particularly cruel. Just saying because I've been there.
The grief of being widowed that caused Alice Coltrane her visions brought her to an older spiritual and medicinal practice in India which thankfully viewed her suffering with more compassion and allowed her to continue her artistic genius. I feel there is a great loss to the artistic and general community when the medieval torture practices of Europe are forced on ADOS or anyone really when ancient practices such as meditation and acknowledgement and acceptance of the grief process are much more humane and sane responses to normal reactions to the REAL harms of unjust persecution and loss.

Also, because I know a few Schizophrenics, the medical community warns that suicide is common. It’s a difficult disease to suffer from. Anderson Cooper did a story on it when he wore an ear piece that simulated what Schizophrenics report happens with the voices. It was enlightening.

Another good informative video Ashley. I'm am a New Yorker born and raised, particularly in Manhattan where I live till this very day. I remember so well when Donny Hathaway died; I passed by the area where it took place right in front of the Essex House hotel. I was on my way to meet my brother at Columbus Circle at 59th street and Central Park West, then we were going to catch the A train uptown. By the way, the A train is one of the subways here in NYC, then found out when we got to my apartment, and seen on tv as well as heard on the radio; that the crowd gathered around part of body I seen laying on the ground (the legs), was that of Donny Hathaway. It seemed very strange to me then, and still does today; that the man who put out such great music like "Where Is The Love," "Back Together Again," as well as so many other great songs, would kill himself. I mean usually when a person comes home or if they're staying in/at a hotel, when they come in from the cold, and it was January; the usual normal thing to do is take off the heavy winter coat, hat, scarf and gloves.
I just have to say, ya never know who owes money to who, and for what reason. Then after waiting for a certain period of time, there's some who isn't going to hear any more excuses or give any more time. I'm just saying. Again another great video Ashley. Oh and by the the way, this happened just a few blocks away from where Phyllis Hyman lived. I was wondering if you will make a video on the life and times of Phyllis Hyman? She was a talented recording artist herself, I wonder why and what would make these exceptional gifted people kill themselves, if indeed they really did kill themselves. Look forward to the next video Ashley, take care and stay safe. 🙏👍
