All the speaking (and singing) parts of Judge Frollo from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, minus all the unnecessary parts (aka everyone else in the movie).
R.I.P Mr Tony Jay, very few people could make a Disney villain sinister, snide and vulnerable all wrapped up in velvety tones. Truly this was a masterclass in voice acting.
Something about how Frollo carries himself is so mesmerizing. He's so elegant, his hand movements are so graceful - in fact his hands are almost dainty in a way. This feminine body language even rivals the more feminine characters in the movie, like Esmeralda. It's such a sinister elegance, and it works so well. Tony Jay did such a good job with his voice, definitely one of the most underrated, one of the most sinister, and one of the most authentically human villains in Disney's repertoire.
I picked up on this as a kid, and then I found out that he was designed, storyboarded and animated by women. It definitely explained a lot of Frollo’s behavior. Frollo, in order to atone for his mortal sin, must fulfill the position of the mother he took away from Quasimodo by providing for him personally, and much like a traditional mother, he keeps any feelings of discontent about the situation to himself. He’s (as you pointed out) sophisticated (or refined, elegant, etc.) in attire and attitude, affectionate (although feigned), a “teacher” (he tries going over the alphabet…with a 20-year-old), prudish and seemingly not physically imposing. Seemingly-because he still sliced stone with a sword so hard it fell off in the climax.
Frollo makes all the mcu villains look like amateurs. This is a true villain; cold, cruel, sadistic, manipulative, ruthless, selfish and truly despicable.
Well, a lot of the time the MCU makes antagonists that you can sympathize with to a degree, which, true, could make good characters, they do bad but they're no villain. But classic pure evil villains are tropes because they work when you do it right.

@@flintlockwood25 I am quite sure that there have been a couple of Esmeraldas before in Frollo's life. But in these cases there was no Quasimodo who could save the day.
As if his evil grin and dark round eyes don't scare me enough it's his last and only laugh that sends shivers down my spine. I don't think i need to mention his last words. He's #1 without second thought. And his song Hellfire may not be as catchy as Scar's Be Prepared but what can u say when he's turning not only to a deadly sin but murderous insanity.
Hmm... Quasimodo wanting to go to the festival, only to have Frollo as his "father" reject the idea in order to "protect" him? It reminds me of the witch and Rapunzel's relationship in Tangled! :o
It's a similar theme. Both are using them for their own reasons. Mother Gothel used Repunzel to extend her own life through the song. She aimed to take a piece of her hair, but discovered it wouldn't work. So she kidnapped and aimed to lock her away like a tool, not a child. Frollo locked Quasimodo away due to his faith of repentance. Killing his mother on Notre Dame left him to care for him. But hiding the disfigured child in the bell tower. Only the church knows he's the "father". He has him hidden to save his own reputation.
In all fairness, Frollo at least had a reason to hide Quasi away. He was indeed deformed and people are indeed cruel towards that sort of "crime". When the crowd turns on him, Frollo does, quite literally, nothing. People just chose to attack him on their own. Rapunzel's case to me seems a lot more abusive because she is a perfectly normal pretty girl (who has Royal Blood!), who spends her life being told she is ugly, fat and doesn't stand a chance in the outside world. Mother Gothel is lying to her in a much less protective way for her own gain.
Well frollo did sort of have a point that he would be judged by the outside world for his appearance. And when his point was proven he let Quasimodo face the consequences, its not just because I'm partial to Frollo, but I think in a way he deserved it. Frollo would've stopped it eventually, they were only throwing tomatoes at him with him restrained. Idk.
Disney's Frollo is amazing, so corrupted and evil and selfpleased! The best disney villain by far! They did a hell of a job making him evil, and that's a plus; the Frollo of the book on the other hand, is actually in love with her, which is kinda sad, it consumes him and torments him in such a cruel way! If you like Disney's adaptation, I highly recommend you to read the book, it's way better and it's completely worth it to read Frollo's story, is way more complex than this. I actually sympathized with him, poor thing.
I agree book Frollo was more complicated than the Disney version but it's a mistake to think what he felt for Esmeralda was love. He had an unhealthy obsession with her and actually tried to rape her. The only thing that stopped him was Quasimodo beating his ass.
Most memorable Disney villain, in no small part thanks to Tony Jay's stellar performance. Despite being in a cartoon, Frollo didnt feel like a cartoony villain.
If the Oscars added a voice acting category, Tony Jay would have won in ‘97 (I know the movie came out in ‘96, I’m going by the year the Oscars were held).
“When your heartless mother abandoned you as a child, anyone else would have drowned you. And this is my thanks for taking you in and raising you as my son?” This line probably made so many people in the theater pissed off and hate him even more.
It´s incredible that his screen time in total of his speaking parts only (Not counting the shots when he is not speaking, him being in the background or the scenes with the full conversations) sum up to 13 mins. Average classic Disney villains have a lot less, like 4 mins or 5 tops. I really love how this movie fleshes out and gives the villain such a huge role that even outshines the role of it's protagonist. Because to be honest. Frollo''s own arch in the movie, of his obsession for Esmeralda and his downfall for it it's, at least for me, a lot more interesting and intense than Quasimodo's arch.
There were three parts you forgot: The first one was actually pointed out by someone else down below, the second one was when he says "Stop!" to the guard who's whipping some guy before he says "Ease up, wait between lashes," and the last one is when he says "For justice, for Paris and for her own salvation, it is my sacred duty to send this unholy demon back where she belongs! (it may be a slight bit muffled until the part "...back where she belongs" without headphones or earbuds, but with them it can be heard perfectly clearly)."
@@user-jp1yh3fl2sthis is actually (from what I’ve seen.) what all DVD/VHS recordings of Frollo sound like, and to be honest, I like it better in some places.
Fun fact: The voice actor of the Bishop is the same voice actor as Governor Ratcliffe, the villain from Pocahontas which came out just before this. Sadly both the voice actor of Frollo and Ratcliffe are dead, but they both performed loads of roles for Disney from the 80's to mid 2000's.
Watch when Frollo throws the Esmeralda carving across the table; it knocks his own figure over and out of frame. Now what's going on in Quasimodo's head at that moment?
This is the continuation of Frollo's depressing alphabet in my theory: F - fascism G - genocide H - haplessness I - ignominy J - jaundice K - killjoy L - lugubriosity M - malevolence N - negligence O - oppression P - profanity Q - qualm R - remorse S - scourge T - turmoil U - ultimatum V - vehemence W - wretchedness X - xenophobia

@@flintlockwood25 I am quite sure that there have been a couple of Esmeraldas before in Frollo's life. But in these cases there was no Quasimodo who could save the day.
You forgot one line from Frollo. He says at the Festival of Fools "Look at that disgusting display"!
"Yes sir"
"y e s s i r"
How long is this line?
As if his evil grin and dark round eyes don't scare me enough it's his last and only laugh that sends shivers down my spine. I don't think i need to mention his last words. He's #1 without second thought. And his song Hellfire may not be as catchy as Scar's Be Prepared but what can u say when he's turning not only to a deadly sin but murderous insanity.
Frollo: Old, Evil and somehow attractive…
"Elegant" and "evil" are two words that don't normally go together but yet here we are....
Doctor: Sir, you only have 13 minutes and 20 seconds to live
Me:
Travis Gibbons True
In all fairness, Frollo at least had a reason to hide Quasi away. He was indeed deformed and people are indeed cruel towards that sort of "crime". When the crowd turns on him, Frollo does, quite literally, nothing. People just chose to attack him on their own.
Rapunzel's case to me seems a lot more abusive because she is a perfectly normal pretty girl (who has Royal Blood!), who spends her life being told she is ugly, fat and doesn't stand a chance in the outside world. Mother Gothel is lying to her in a much less protective way for her own gain.
Finally someone mentioned that bc that's what I was thinking

Don't sympathize with old horny men, they've had several decades to get some...
I agree book Frollo was more complicated than the Disney version but it's a mistake to think what he felt for Esmeralda was love. He had an unhealthy obsession with her and actually tried to rape her. The only thing that stopped him was Quasimodo beating his ass.
Frollo is the best indeed.
He even better than that bitch King Candy/Turbo.
Don’t sympathize, just disengage
Most memorable Disney villain, in no small part thanks to Tony Jay's stellar performance.
Despite being in a cartoon, Frollo didnt feel like a cartoony villain.
One of the greatest villains in all media, not just Disney movies.
If the Oscars added a voice acting category, Tony Jay would have won in ‘97 (I know the movie came out in ‘96, I’m going by the year the Oscars were held).
the editing makes it kinda funny.
Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, but it's only Frollo
Frollo: You said "Festival!"
Quasimodo: *I HAVEN'T SAID ANYTHING!*
“When your heartless mother abandoned you as a child, anyone else would have drowned you. And this is my thanks for taking you in and raising you as my son?”
This line probably made so many people in the theater pissed off and hate him even more.
As Anakin Skywalker once said in his wise voice “Liar!” And “I Hate You!”
"I had a little trouble with the fireplace" very underrated line
13 minutes if pure evil, INCREDIBLE voice acting… and pretty great singing range.
“And he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit.” His last words before he falls into the fiery pit.
Frollo: *smells hair* "I was just imagining a rope around that beautiful neck."
Also Frollo: "Yo stop tempting me you evil bitch"
🤔You mean to tell me you don't accuse somebody of tempting you after you've sniffed them? 🧐
Man likes smell women hair shampoo.
Oh My God! How Dark Is This Disney Movie Man!
Esmeralda She Hits Judge Frollo She Hit Him
Esmeralda She Spits On Judge Frollo's Face
It´s incredible that his screen time in total of his speaking parts only (Not counting the shots when he is not speaking, him being in the background or the scenes with the full conversations) sum up to 13 mins. Average classic Disney villains have a lot less, like 4 mins or 5 tops. I really love how this movie fleshes out and gives the villain such a huge role that even outshines the role of it's protagonist. Because to be honest. Frollo''s own arch in the movie, of his obsession for Esmeralda and his downfall for it it's, at least for me, a lot more interesting and intense than Quasimodo's arch.
Tony Jay was a true Disney Legend.

Frollo is one of the greatest Disney villains ever. Tony jays voice is so remarkable. When he voiced frollo it just makes my stomach feel so relaxed.
There's also the matter of the annoying high pitch in this upload.
@@user-jp1yh3fl2sthis is actually (from what I’ve seen.) what all DVD/VHS recordings of Frollo sound like, and to be honest, I like it better in some places.
Rest In Peace Tony Jay, you’ll be missed.

I was sad that an era of Disney villians was gone
So I decide to look up the name of the best one
And here I am
Ok... Seriously... Coolest voice ever!!!!
"Shall we review your alphabet today? Very well. A? B? C? D? E? Good, F?" Quasimodo chuckles, Frollo wipes mouth, "...excuse me?"
"How dare you defy me" love that line
Fun fact: The voice actor of the Bishop is the same voice actor as Governor Ratcliffe, the villain from Pocahontas which came out just before this. Sadly both the voice actor of Frollo and Ratcliffe are dead, but they both performed loads of roles for Disney from the 80's to mid 2000's.
Fun fact: David Ogden Stiers also voiced Wiggins
R.I.P. David Ogden Stiers and Tony Jay The Archdeacon and Judge Frollo are now in Heaven 😢😢😭😭😢😢😭😢😭😢😭😢

If they make more films like this, this wouldn't be special anymore
7 years later and i get replied by Satan's wife😮

Watch when Frollo throws the Esmeralda carving across the table; it knocks his own figure over and out of frame. Now what's going on in Quasimodo's head at that moment?
I know. you helped HER ESCAPE!!!!

Doesn't anyone agree or disagree that Frollo and Lady Tremaine from Cinderella could have been related (perhaps brother and sister)?
Frollo and Mother Gothel from Rapunzel (Sorry for mistakes)
Billy Ray OMFG I thought I was the only person that thiught this!!
I have the headcanon that they are brothers, it's just that I feel that they look a lot alike
