Again, Thank you for this tutorial.... I can see myself doing some of this posture and will now refocus and try to make the adjustments..... I can feel the difference when my shoulders and hips are lined up in the drive and lean. AWESOME coaching again. Thanks John.
The only serious choice. I talk about drumming from time to time. Search RUclips for “The Athenian Society” and you’ll see me playing in a few of their videos. Not 100% the kind of music I proper (I’m a Van Halen / Foo Fighters kinda guy) but drumming is always fun!
Thanks so much for taking the time to make this detailed explanation. Some of those drills are in your normal 4 minute warm up but this gives more detail focus points. I always felt that I was up on sit bones but it’s not until you get a video of yourself that you see what is really happening so top tip for everyone is get yourself filmed it can be very alarming! I’ll continue to work on improving and film an update to see if I can make this correction. Thanks again
Oh no I’m very used to demonstrate how not to do things. Happens when on windsurfing coaching holidays lots of clips of me showing how not do things so I have form. However I always feel knowing what you’re doing wrong is the first step to improving….the next step can take a while, in my case a bit longer judging by my windsurfing….
Great video! I’ve been practicing just the rocking over my hips between warmup and main session. I think combining it with a short 500m would be a good way to ingrain into my regular stroke. Thanks again!
That's a very good idea. If you can hold concentration for the 2 minutes or so it'll take to do the 500m - then go into the drills, then back to the 500m - do that around 10 times - you'll supercharge your progress. Skill work / fitness work - you'll come out the other side of a few sessions like that a MUCH better rower. In fact, I might make a video with just this...
Nice vid, thanks for this info. I sometimes get cramp in the ball of my left foot. Only in the left foot and only when rowing in socks/barefoot. Any thoughts why this happens?
I'd guess you're probably pushing off more with that side. But also, you're probably straining (even lightly) again the footstraps with this foot at the finish of the stroke. If you watch my toes when I row in my RowAlong workouts, you'll see I do a weird curl of my right toes at the finish. No idea why I do it - or even that I did it until it was pointed out. So maybe set up a camera, and see if you're doing anything odd. And, while you're there - check you're not lifting your heels up too far (a small lift is ok) - that over stretch of your plantar fasciitis could cause the pain too.
The great thing about these drills is that when done right, it's not just the posture that they iron out, by lots of other quirks that can enter into your stroke. It's the reason I always include them in my warm-ups during the RowAlong workouts.

Always good advice in the video.

Nice Shirt. I have the same one!
I'm sure most of us have an older phone in our drawers at home that can be "sacrificed" for this back pocket tip.... LOL.

Great advice, thanks. I’ll keep an eye on these points and let you know how I get on. Have a good one.
Hey ! I found the video with the water ski reference :)
Haha! I think I mention it in a couple of workouts too - but hopefully I didn’t embarrass myself when talking about water ski-ing in this one.
Thank you for the very helpful video!
You're very welcome!
Thank you - these drills are very helpful.

Fantastic tips, drills and illustrations! Thanks !
Thanks - I really appreciate you taking the time to post that. I hope I made it clear enough that maybe it's not a good thing to try with the phone?
Brilliant
Thankyou. I really hope it helps.
Cheers mate
