Over 60 years old, and this movie still never fails to impress. The (literal) cast of thousands. Actors who are still legendary today. No fake-looking CGI f/x.

I quite agree about CGI--for all its technical wizardry, it is remarkably unsatisfying and unconvincing, and is too often used as an end in itself.

Although the "parting of the Red Sea" scene gets all the attention, this one is still my favorite scene (and the aftermath). The stereo surround sound recording throughout the movie is just incredible for a 1956 film.
The special effects more than hold up. That LOOKS like an ancient Egyptian construction!
The burning bush scene is a glimpse of what it was like when God spoke to Moses . The fire light and Cecil De Mille voice as God was very moving. God said remove the shoes from your feet for you are standing on holy ground. This movie moves you and anyone who has ears to hear and eyes to see.

The idea of Heston voicing the Burning Bush came from Heston, himself. During their trip to the Sinai, Heston and DeMille met with the Abbot of St. Catherine’s Monastery, and Heston suggested that he should voice God. Commenting “If you hear the voice of God, you hear it inside yourself”. The abbot was intrigued by that idea.
A collection of the greatest actors together with one of the best directors. In the movie industy. !!
"You ordered me to build this city." Love this moment between Heston and Hardwicke. You can see Seti I (Sir Cedric Hardwicke) taking a moment to think about whether or not to impose his lordly control over Moses, which he can easily do. But at the same time, he cannot resist turning to watch to see if his favored son can raise the enormous obelisk into place successfully.
Oh yes, Vincent Price. The voice is what gave him away. I never noticed before. Verily, a cast of thousands of every caste.
That scene where he tries to kill Joshua, blew me away when I was a kid, previously, I only saw Vincent Price on the Muppet Show.
There were so many parts in this movie that I liked and this is one of them. The effort to make it look real like the giant mallet, the giant rope, the cables holding the obelisk by thousands of people makes this one of the true grandeur depicted in this epic that I enjoyed watching it as a young teenager

This sequence has always been overshadowed by the Red Sea scene but with the music and sound effect with the process shot on the top of the screen it puts any modern CGI to shame

Oh, I like the line before that one:"The city is made of brick, mighty Pharoah, the strong make many, the starving make few *slams* the dead make none" Some very good writing in that movie, even though it is one of the least accurate of the Moses stories.

As a kid watching that scene, I wasn’t thinking about accuracy; only how dramatic and neat that whole movie sequence was!….it probably had something to do with becoming interested in seeing how an individual directs the construction of big projects….!
The Egyptians would probably have used oxen to haul their megaliths rather than slaves, but the use of an inclined plane is quite accurate.

Normally I don't like biblical or sword and sandal epics but this one is a fun watch and wonderful to see Vincent Price as Baka.
They just don't build them like they used to...
One of the actors (very young then - Juliano Gemma) who played in many spaghetti westerns.He was also a gymnast.

That's a great scene - well made. The Egyptians were very capable at that time - they mastered to build structure in way no other known culture a that time could. We always cannot forget the humans were as intelligent as us today - or even more.
This is a movie, they never built the pyramids and can't even do it today

Raising an obelisk probably wasn't quite that dramatic but it sure makes for a fun movie scene.
Maybe it was more dramatic?
I was very young when I first saw this movie. This scene very much impressed me. It seemed a very feasible recreation of the placement of the Obelisk. How else would you stand up such a huge column of stone? Whether or not the makers of the movie knew the realities of the Egyptian monuments, the fact is the ancient Egyptians knew how to make and use concrete. All of the Egyptian structures were poured into place. Now, that's a feasible answer!
best line ever when the old lady gets her dress caught and is about to be crushed by the moving stone. "stop a stone for an old women"?

Charlton Heston for me is the best actor of our time i.e. ( omega man, soilent green, planet of the apes, Ben her, ) , but by far the Ten Commandments being his best !

I'm no engineer. Can someone explain to me what Moses was trying to do with the Obelisk that was so risky?
He was trying to raise it, but an obelisk is one single massive stone, so he needed to raise it without it snapping in two
As the single-piece stone obelisk tips over the edge and drops to the base it could easily crack in two. That is the purpose of all that wooden support--to relieve some of the stress as it is hoisted up and over the edge and to compress it tightly. The most critical stress would come about the moment it is at a 40 degree angle. Baka wanted more sand piled higher so the drop would not be so great. Once upright, the sand below would be removed and the obelisk would gradually settle into position. Moses really was gambling in deciding to proceed so soon. He clearly had faith in the work of the slaves.
@@Dallas_Kit wasn’t hoisted up like this tho, they simply layed the obelisk far enough onto the sand so that when the sand was released, the obelisk simply lowered itself down into position. A sling around the bottom of the obelisk guided it into its grooves, then they used ropes to tip it that last 15 degrees.

Great clip. I did not know Moses was an engineer. Indeed, the Jews did contribute in building the pyramids (as slaves), and this clip truly shows a possible ancient innovation. Thanks for this video, I will use it as examples. Notice the men falling of the foundation, I an sure many died in this endeavor.
When it comes down to it, we don't know a whole lot about Moses, but you're right - it's really cool to see how the Egyptians may have gone about raising these enormous obelisks. Definitely a risky venture!
Great movie except the stonework of ancient Egypt were constructed by well paid Egyptian nationals not slaves. Being a stoneworker was a family job and considered an artisan skill. The narrative from the old testament about Israelites escaping slavery in Egypt is simply conjecture. There is simply *no* archeological evidence that any Canaanite people were ever enslaved by the pharoes of the Nile.
The Canaanites tribes were however a great mobile and light infantry fighting force in the Bronze Age and were used by Egyptians as mercenaries. There is some evidence that the Israelites under Moses may have been held on reserve with a flimsy contract for too long before abruptly leaving in what we know as the exodus. Their subsequent military victories are mentioned in the Bible with the conquest of Canaan (Gad, Reuben etc).
Zionist and Christian propagators of this common modern myth both overlook one major element of history of this region. *Ancient Egyptians kept extensive and detailed records of Everything*. Furthermore they carved them into stone, from major historical events right down to day to day mundane details. It's all in the heiroglyphics. No Israelite slaves constructing their monuments on record.

Blue means remove all anchors to the stone cylinders that will allow the ropes to move the obelisk. Green means for the mallet men to stand by to strike and free the anchored ropes that are keeping the obelisk stationary. Finally, red means for the mallet men to strike and release the anchored ropes and allow the obelisk to roll down into the trench and onto the sand base while men pull on the ropes on both sides to prevent the obelisk from falling down and cracking.

Moses was not a slave. He was a highly regarded member of the royal family. We know so much more now than even when this movie was made. I did note the use of sand as a tool to support the obelisk and ease it into place, which is one of the methods offered by historians. Slaves may have been used instead of animals because they were considered expendable. But, that is only conjecture on my part. And, as for your comment about the Bible, I think you would be surprised how many facts are contained in its pages.
