  • Hey everyone! Maleficent Reaction is today's video!
Join me as I watch Maleficent for the first time and really enjoy it! Maleficent spins the tale we all know into a dark, revenge filled story that we never knew!
As a beautiful young woman of pure heart, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) has an idyllic life in a forest kingdom. When an invading army threatens the land, Maleficent rises up to become its fiercest protector. However, a terrible betrayal hardens her heart and twists her into a creature bent on revenge. She engages in an epic battle with the invading king's successor, then curses his newborn daughter, Aurora -- realizing only later that the child holds the key to peace in the kingdom.

When this came out I watched a lot of interviews. The concept of him drugging her and cutting off her wings was supposed to be the equivalent of someone waking up to realize they had been raped. Maleficent, I don't think ever forgave Stephan but she realized that aurora wasn't to be blamed for what stephan did, kind of like how a child that results from rape shouldn't be punished for how they came into the world. She decided to "forgive" him because of the love of aurora. She couldn't take back the curse, but her love for aurora did. That's how I see it at least

To be fair, when Aurora says Maleficent is her fairy godmother, she's kinda right. Maleficent did sort of give her a gift on his christening... at least the "beloved by all who sees her" part. I'd also note that Maleficent saw her, and therefore had to love her.

  • @user-kv5jk5dg5n

Maleficent isn’t the greatest movie ever, but it’s fine and quite creative in many ways. It’s definitely a lot better than many other Disney remakes. For me, though, the best character in it is Diaval, I just love him. His character is one thing that wasn’t just changed, it was truly developed since the original. Also, Sam Riley is awesome, he’s perfect for this role)
By the way, Maleficent really is her Gogmother, technically. She was a fairy at the Christening, she gave her a gift, so, she is.
Hope you’ll react to Maleficent II, it’s also worth watching.

So Maleficent TRIED to revoke her curse but she was unable to. That's because when she added the qualifier of "true love's kiss" she also ensured that would be the only thing that could end it, that no power on Earth could undo this curse (not even, tragically, her own.)
As for Stephan cutting off Maleficent's wings (which, by the way, he did using the iron wire hidden in his string of beads,) I am of the belief that he still loved her at the time. However, while that love prevented him from killing her in her drugged sleep it wasn't strong enough to convince him to live on the run with her, forsaking castle comforts for forests and bogs while the entire kingdom seeks their heads. By taking her wings he was able to convince the king that she was dead. This would ensure that Maleficent could live without being hunted, and by extension give him the crown. Of course he likely realized that he would never be forgiven for taking something so precious to her when she trusted him the most, and there was no way that he could admit to the kingdom that had gathered for Aurora's birth that he had lied to them all and gained the crown illicitly, so he didn't even try.

  • @maggie_knolastname
    @maggie_knolastname 2 года назад +42

She TRIED to revoke it but couldn’t (which was a really interesting twist when I first saw the movie. I was like ‘holy shit! She really tried to get rid of it?!’) because when she cast it, she said ONLY true love’s kiss could save her. That’s why she was so intent on trying to bring the prince to her. She thought maybe…just maybe he’d save her.
And seeing her kiss of true love (as a mother) saving Aurora was the greatest scene in this movie for me. I love this movie FAR more than the original animated version. Perhaps I saw the animated much too late when we’re into the era of the badass princesses that have a personality and take care of themselves pretty well (rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Merida for example) and don’t NEED a prince to save them and that’s why I found the animated one so…BORING!!!!
So this one was great; seeing a twist on the story and such.

one of the things I really love about this movie is how very fitting Maleficent's curse is to how she herself was violated. the death-like sleep; the true-love's kiss which for Maleficent doesn't actually exist because she was violated by Stephen, who she thought was her true love. all those little details were so amazing to me. plus the obvious twist that true love's kiss for Aurora ended up coming from Maleficent herself. glad you enjoyed it Cody!

So, based on modern Disney's cannon, this is the way the story actually went, and the original cartoon story is, in universe, a fairytale told to make the prince and "good guys" seem heroic. After all, Maleficent did end up killing the king. This is why the good fairies seem less competent, why the Prince's "true love's kiss" didn't work, and why Maleficent is more of a grey character instead of the "villain."

Yes, that is true loves' kiss...... She never said it couldn't be a "mothers'" love for "her" child.
When Maleficent created the curse she only thought about the true love between a couple, which both she and Stephan had left behind at that point, making the condition to break the curse theoretically impossible, at least on their horizon.
However Maleficent messed it up since she never excluded the true love between parents and children, which is something she learns to feel over the course of the movie.

The novelization of this film apparently confirmed Stephen's sociopathy from the first time he appears in the story. I hadn't read it, so it was up in the air what Stephen's motives were for mutilating his oldest friend. In fact, before I learned about the novelization, I was rather fond of the concept of moral ambiguity. I wanted to believe his motives were pure, and any perceived benefits resulting from this violence against her are only a means to an end.

Apparently the spinning wheel is a metaphor for growing up.
The Curse was essentially Maleficent saying, "She will be given the chance to grow up."
By burning them, the king was saying, "She will NEVER grow up!"

Typically people who have not seen this movie will often say that the part when maleficent wakes up and discovers that her wings are missing, is too dramatic, like her crying and screaming is too dramatic.
I really hate it when people say that, just because well she woke up to figure out two of her main body parts are missing, not only she confused, but it’s obviously very painful, so I don’t get it when people don’t like that reaction, because that is very realistic to me. If I woke up to figure out that both of my legs are missing I would be both scared confused screaming on the top of my lungs, screaming bloody murder because I had no clue who or what or why somebody would take my legs. I will have the same reaction as what I’m saying.

Fun fact: toddler Maleficent is actually Angelina Jolie's real life daughter! She recommended her because her character's makeup scared a lot of child actors!

Okay, not to beat a dead horse here, but...
Now that you have a better understanding of the curse, its ins and outs, and the stakes having been raised so much because of its imminence, would that have changed how you feel about the film, its characters, or its tone?

I like to think eventually Maleficent and Diaval(the crow) fall in love over the years following. Or even just really deep true friendship/companionship from all they have been through together

    • @lilenwasnothere6867

he was supposed to be her love interest in an earlier version of the script, but they decided to focus only on familial love. the scene where they talk about the curse was the most blatant, with the script outright saying "she's looking right at him, but she can't see the love in his eyes" and the novelization implying that this is when maleficent realizes she has feelings for diaval, but is in denial. notably, the final product is actually barely any different, besides a couple of scenes, and the actors definitely had the original intentions in mind.

The youngest version of Aurora is played by Jolie's own daughter (Vivienne Jolie-Pitt), since she was the only child that wasn't afraid of Jolie with the Maleficent costume on.

The curse was never broken in the middle of the movie! If you listen closely to the scene while she tries to break it the curse over powers Maleficent trying to break it and you hear the echo of the original curse saying “This curse will last till the end of time, no power in earth can change it.”
