  • Stuttgart's Cycling Route 1 looks like any other street in large parts. In fact, I'd have had trouble finding it at all if I hadn't had a guide: I got the co-founder of the city's cycling campaign to travel down it with me. Turns out, he's an automotive engineer!

I visited Stuttgart recently and was baffled by the impassable six lane road right in front of the main station. It was literally almost impossible to cross it.

Car-free streets still look like they're built for cars, too wide and empty. They should get rid of some asphalt or pavement for open ground to grow some plants/ground cover. It would help in managing rainwater flow or flooding too.

      First steps. Baby steps.
It's similar to Berlin's Friedrichstrasse, which was converted for cyclists. It definitely looks like a car street, and will look like one until budget is freed up to repair it, and then it will get renovated to better fit the pedestrian/cyclist nature.

Too bad the ground water level had to be lowered for that clusterfuck of an undersized, ongoing problem generating prestige underground train station (aka eternal construction site) and the capitalization of the gained terrain that is used for concrete deserts, prestigious real estate. :x

Thanks a lot for this video. It was great revisiting the city I lived in for ten years from a cyclist's perspective. As a young woman, I never dared biking there. I used public transport or walked, though always feeling annoyed by the noise, pollution and the long waiting time at pedestrian crossings.
Stuttgart could be such an amazing city with its unique Kessellage, the mild weather and the cute cafés. In my opinion it's predestined to be an ebike paradise. And there's already a fair amount of nice parks. Just remove the cars and give humans some space.

FYI: The large intersection at the main station does not have a single place where pedestrians and cyclists can change sides of the road

A great job you're doing! Stuttgart does look like a bit of a hell for pedestrians or cyclists. I hope more streets get freed of personal cars.

I lived in Stuttgart for one year and as you can say it in German it was Der Horror!! for cycling. I live in Munich now it’s not like Holland but it’s still way better than Stuttgart.

Interesting video, thanks. One question, what is the absolute best German city in terms of cycling infrastructure?

Münster and Karlsruhe are about equal I'd say, with Freiburg and Kiel (the place Thijs moved to shortly after this video) being the followups
