  • Starting in 1992, development of a new car-light neighborhood called Vauban began in Freiburg, Germany. Completed some 15 years later, it shows the benefits of walkable cities. So why has Freiburg failed to repeat, much less improve upon, this success?

What's really ironic to me is that Vauban is primarily centralized parking, while Merzhausen really looks like it was originally build for "not owning a car" (as those weren't common back then).

Most often the argument used against car-free neighborhoods is "I need a car to move furniture" or something like that. There's a pretty simple answer to that, use a delivery service. Yes, they do cost, but with the amount of money spend on a car annually, you could get like 100 furniture deliveries. That sand argument is just laughable. And that's coming from a Green mayor... or from a -Green- lobbyist for BMW?
The most interesting thing I've found out is that pretty much every solution to true sustainability, can be found from the past. Everything we need to thrive has already been invented and discovered, we just need to apply them.

You can make it even simpler. Just rent a car for the day if you need to move furniture. It's not even that expensive and me and my family have always done it for moving.

And even more surprising, you can rent a van so you don't even have to cut your 100 year old closet in half to fit it in your normal sized car (my grandpa did this)

As mentioned in the video, it’s a testament to how brainwashed our society is. Most people cant imagine not needing or wanting a car, to the point that anyone saying they don’t must be lying.

Have a look at the brand new Spinelli Quartier in Mannheim. They had the same idea: one central car park, a lively centre, Baugenossenschaften that chose how to build, tram&bus connections… as a town council we went to visit to see how we could develop a new quarter in our town. Spinelli was our ‚good example‘, Heidelberg‘s Bahnstadt was our ‚bad example‘.

These videos are great. Need to link them under the next Not Just Bikes video so they can gain some traction.

I live just ten minutes away from here! I'm glad to see a channel that explores these sorts of areas in depth and also rightly criticises the backwardsness of people who hold on to car-centric living to the detriment of us all.
