  • This video shows how to handle a big 46" maple crotch log that is much bigger than the capacity of the Woodmizer LT40 hydraulic sawmill. I show the slabs harvested at the end of the video, including all the beautiful crotch wood in the bookmatched slabs.

      @@JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop haha 😂 right. I was thinking about that watching your video. A guy could buy one of those real cheap mills and stretch it just for those big ones. Slow and easy would be the trick.

    Hi Jeff,thank you for the nice video. Im getting myself a LT40 hydraulic aswell. I hope to make slabs as beautiful as these. I am curious though, how do you plane these? Do you have a very wide planer of is there an other way? Thanks again for the videos!

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching. You need to flatten the slab, one side first, and then you can run it through a wide planer. I currently have a 16" jointer and a 20" planer. Some of these will fit, but most won't. I do them by hand with hand planes. Thinking about building a router jig to use a power router.....plenty of video's for you to watch on that subject. Good luck with your mill. They're great to have.

    So just out of curiosity how much will those slabs would bring you? Another question is how long have you had it and how long do you think it took you to pay that off

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  3 года назад +1

      I don't sell slabs. I sell furniture, and the tables that are built with the slabs. Lumber prices, especially slabs, vary around the country, and around the world. I don't know what you mean by "pay it off"???? I didn't finance the sawmill, I paid for it in full when I purchased it.

    Jeff have been looking at those Woodmizer saws I like the LT40 like you have. Do you ever move yours around? Do you sell the lumber you mill? Thx

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  6 лет назад

      It is a mobile sawmill, but I don't move it much. I do sell lumber from time to time. I have a lot of nice bookmatched slabs, and a bunch of ash sawn for workbenches right now.

    You might want to move your fork lift back away from the mill, so that you don’t shin yourself on the forks and make it easier walking around the mill. Just a thought.

    Some nice wood , what happens when I dry it? Curls up?

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  6 лет назад +2

      All freshly sawn wood needs to be stacked and stickered so that proper airflow can get to the entire stack. Adding a fan at the correct time can aid in the process, as long as it's not too soon, causing the wood to dry too fast. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching.

    What do you do with all the sawdust

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  5 лет назад

      It's good mulch for the land. I live in the country, and I'm not running a production sawmill. When I do cut a lot, and it starts to build up, I'll shovel it into a wheel barrow, and take it to my burn pile. That is rarely needed, though.

  • @patrickstammeyer6531

    Enjoyed the video had to smile at the inspector....my inspector won't set foot in the sawmill she says it's not safe too dangerous! My father put me to work at the mill sweeping and cleaning up dust at a young age by the time I was a teenager I ran the mill by myself. I am 49 now and still have all fingers but all these years of sawmill labor give me some soar mornings. Very very few people will work like this anymore and Evan less young people. All I build is pallets I wish I made nice stuff like you ! You would probably she'd some tears to see walnut Pallets! I am in Iowa what part of the country are you in?

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  6 лет назад

      Lots of sore mornings here, too. Pallet's of walnut? Yes, I'd like to get my hands on that walnut! I'm in Northern Illinois. What kind of mill do you have?

    • @patrickstammeyer6531
      @patrickstammeyer6531 6 лет назад +1

      I have a cooks ac36 and Morgan scragg but again I only do pallets it is like a mind set I look at lumber all I see is pallets your vision is better than mine or at least pays allot better I am not to far from cedar Rapids my email is palletguy@imonmail.com

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  6 лет назад

      We all do our thing! I'm a furniture and cabinetmaker, so all I see is that when I look at logs. I drool over walnut, especially now. I can't even get walnut logs here.

      @patrickstammeyer6531 6 лет назад

      Contact me with email I will send you some pics of walnut you can rescue from pallets just remember I don't start with good stuff to begin with it will give you some free 8 quarter that has sat for a year if you will send me the pics of something nice you created with it

    Log would have been fire wood to me. Way to much rot in the wood. Maple does not keep long before the wood stains and starts to rot.

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop

      Ha ha ha. Well, you would have missed out on all the spectacular live edge slabs that I got from it. Plenty of really great figured wood, with spalting and crotch figure, left when I was done cutting it. Most of it has been used already. Thanks for watching.
