  • I show the Woodmizer LT40 in action, sawing a really nicely figured 62" long figured maple crotch log. I left the log laying on the wet ground for 18 months, and the spalting turned out really awesome!

    Beautiful wood! I love figured wood like that. Great job of showing how get it. I have a LT15 wide and hunt for trees with figure. A couple days ago I pulled my goose neck and drove over 60 miles to pick up a good load of maple with lots of signs of figure. Can't wait to cut it. Thanks for video.

      Thanks for watching. The best tip I learned was to make sure the hearts of all 3 (when milling a crotch) log ends are the same distance off the mill bed. If they are uneven, you will not get the feather crotch effect to it's maximum.

    Great information! I like learning from other sawyers. Thanks for all the details.

    It's true, Jeff. When I grow up I wanna be just like you....
    Feel free to bring some of that with the next time you come out west.
    Merry Christmas, my friend!

    Wow, some really nice figure! Restoring a 1987 WM LT40HD. Should be operational this spring!!! Enjoy your videos!

      Thanks. My first mill was a 1987 LT28 manual. Manual mills are a great way to start, by having hydraulics is a game changer. Good luck with your mill. Woodmizer has a lot of upgrades available, unless you're set on fabricating yourself. I get that way myself.....except for PC boards.

      @@JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop thank you! Wood-mizer has been extremely helpful on my restore. I am amazed at the number of parts that are still available for a 1987 WM!!! Their help and advice is priceless! And we have already talked about how it might be possible to add the modern electronics to my mill.

      A lot of guys from the Forestry Forum have updated older mills with newer parts. If you can fabricate a little, their newer log rollers, clamps, etc.... are just much better than the older original stuff.

    That maple turned out to quite a nice surprise. Beautiful character to the wood. Nice to see the Woodmizer working up to expectations too. Jeff

      Can't wait until it's dry. 2 tables and a desk top, for sure. Merry Christmas, Jeff.

      @@JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop Merry Christmas to you and yours too. How long to properly dry?

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  5 лет назад +1

      This tree was standing dead for about 4 years, and down for 18 months, so these will be ready by the end of next year, unless I decide to finally build a kiln. I need 2 of me, and 48 hour days, though.

    Have you thought about cutting a 12 or 16 qtr plank on either side of the centerline so you can resaw veneer from them. Make that beautiful figure go much farther.
    Hope you and yours had a merry Christmas and have a happy New Year,
    Rollie

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop

      Hi, Rollie. Yes, I have actually done that already. I have several 12/4 slabs, and a couple 16/4, from short crotches, that will be perfect for bookmatched veneer slicing, once they are dry. Just have to wait for it all to dry, or get it in a vacuum kiln. This is the reason why I bought the Yates American Y30 bandsaw, because it has a resaw capacity of 18". Hope you had a Merry Christmas, too, and have a Happy New Year as well, my friend.

      Sure hope you didn't take it that way, Rollie. It is a very good plan, I'm glad you mentioned it, so anyone reading this gets the tip, too.

      I didn't take it that way, just trying to make a funny. Although, anyone who knows you will never say you don't have your act together.

    Very nice figure! You apparently did catch it at the right time. Lot's of luck and some educated guessing to do that. Enjoyed the video. Good luck to you and Merry Christmas!!

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  5 лет назад

      Yes, I did catch it just right. I kept an eye on that log the entire time, and kept it in the shade in a moist area. I rolled it back in March, and it worked out. Both sides are nicely spalted, and the crotch figure is amazing. Got lucky. Merry Christmas to you, too, and to everyone else.

      Yeah, it's amazing what you can get used to. I'm not cold until it hits single digits. Merry Christmas to you, too, Eric.

    Did the 4 footer become firewood?

    • @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop
      @JeffHeathTheVintageWorkshop  5 лет назад

      No, it is sitting on bunks next to the mill. The weather is horrible right now, -13°F today, so I won't be running the sawmill until the weather improves. I will saw it, though, along with another log from the same tree still back there.
