I'm a prepper gardener, and like you said, you can throw them in where nothing else will grow and up they go. I like Mammoth Jerusalem Artichokes (sunflower tubers) and Grey Stripe Mammoth.

Fantastic video! My absolute favorite varieties are Procut White Lite and Lemonade (fab branching style).
On another note, I would love to know how and when you clear your sunflower stalks once harvest is finished---the root masses are so big and bulky that its so disruptive if I pull them up out of my beds (but unlike other crops where I can just cut to the ground and let decompose over the winter, sunflowers are so big and woody that they’ll still be there next spring getting in the way (plus I’ve heard they can release a chemical that is not always friendly to other crops if you just leave them in the ground…don’t know if that’s true or not). Would love any tips on a more efficient way to clear my beds of sunflowers when the season is up!

Great video, as always! I love Procut White Nite and Procut White Lite as well as Procut Plum for single stems. For branching sunflowers Lemonade has always done really well for me. Growing Teddy Bear sunflowers for the first time next year. I also grew Sunflower Steve's Van Gogh Fantasy Mix and had some lovely blooms this past summer. I can't imagine a garden without sunflowers!!

@@twosistersflowerfarm We had weird weather in Massachusetts and more rain at times than our crops liked. Of the 15 or so seeds of his I sowed only about half survived but I'm chalking it up to the weather and the fact that I bit off more than I could chew in the garden this year. I'm going to pay closer attention to his seedlings next year as some of the ones I got this year were pretty neat. I'm looking forward to your video on preventing insect damage on flowers. i had a bigger problem with it this year because of all the wet weather.

I have tried sunflowers for three different years and decided that was the end of it! Then I watched this video, which was so helpful. Thank you so much! I will try my three favorite this summer and see if I can be successful.

If you have room for a branching variety I highly recommend Teddy Bear. So fluffy and they last 14 days before wilting if picked when just opening. It's a must grow!

Great video! Question!! When you harvest the sunflowers, how do you keep the stems straight? Mine almost always bend weird and then they are almost unusable or I have to cut them way down to put in a small vase. It’s super frustrating and wondered if you had any tips? Sometimes I’d bunch them together after harvest with a rubber band and that helps a little.

Thank you so much for the information. I also just grow all ProCut, for the same reasons. I have found that pests LOVE the white night and white light series though so I don't think I'll grow that variety again. I do start mine under grow lights but you are so right that they get leggy SUPER FAST. You've just convinced me to give direct sowing a go next Spring.

Interestingly, my Gold Lites don't have a green centre, they are all yellow with just a hint of green right at the centre - sometimes. Red Lemon ProCut is one of my favs. You could check it out on my top 5 sunflowers to see what it looks like.

My customers and I loved the white lite sunflower. I cover my transplants for a week as well to protect against the birds. Succession planting worked amazing for me this year. I picked Monday and it was a routine every Monday morning I started a new tray or two of sunflowers.
