For me, when I started 6 years ago on a small 1/4 acre urban lot that includes our house, I needed a flower product that would be high value, require minimal space and minimal time. I started with dinnerplate dahlias, selling them at $4 per single stem rather than in bouquets. I invested $700 in tubers, planted them and kept working 6 days a week When they started blooming I would cut the ones blooming everyday and putting them in our flower wagon on our busy city road in pop cans for easy transport in cars, and then leaving for work. It was the honour system and I would collect the money at the end of the work day. After the season ended, my investment of $700 worth of tubers and (very little of my time) gave me a return of $3,000. I considered that a huge win and each year since then, I have increased my flower varieties to expand the window I sell flowers in, and to be able to sell bouquets as well.
I see comments everyday from new flower farmers saying "I post these beautiful flowers, why isnt anyone buying them?" It's so true it's not:"build it & they will come" you need to convince customers why they shpuld buy from YOU, instead of where they normally buy flowers... & you definitely don't need all the high tech equipment to het started... you may invest all that $ & then find that flowers farming is a lot harder than you thought it wpuld be... its not walking through beautiful fields in a sundress, it's being in the field & sweating, carrying heavy buckets all day, being on your hands & knees planting & weeding, etc.
As a former professional photographer, I guarantee you can just do a swap by allowing the photographer to take photos on your property with a client and providing you with photos of your flowers. Just set a limit how many sessions at your flower farm so they don't disturb you.
My favorite book (so far) is Cool Flowers. I’m not a flower farmer, but I do want to learn all I can. I’ve grown roses for years, but now I have my first dahlias opening. Very exciting. I’m also growing arctic fir red twig dogwoods as well as arctic sun, to have materials for flower arranging, wreath making and winter interest in my landscape.
I recommend A Year in Flowers by Erin Benzakein (floret farms). Cool Flowers opened up a whole new world for me here in Canada. Growing annual seedlings right now to overwinter!
At the beginning is a great place to be 💛 Flowers are beautiful and you can’t go wrong whether you grow them as a hobby for yourself or as a business for others. Best of luck!
Right back at you, Ann! Yes 🙌 a bed/mulch layer is the ultimate game changer- especially for someone as determined as you.. I mean, you’d never believe this is your first season 🤯🤯💛💛
Well, I am a seed hoarder lately! I have bought a lot from floret. I’ve been a gardener for other things all my life right now for my twins and their college fund. We’ve got a fundraiser of 72 pumpkins. I’ll be doing the three sisters with those corn and the beans as well
Do you have a video explaining how you keep your flowers free of insect damage without a tunnel? The zinnias you showed early in this video looked perfect!
Pest management....nightmares of a client finding pests on my bouquets led me to growing and selling succulents but I would love to successfully grow pest free bouquets....advice would be welcome
I've just begun....but I'm offering flowers to my friends daughters who are getting into the age of marriage. It gives me an opportunity to grow flowers and it's not for the bridal bouquet, but, rather for the showers/luncheons/grooms dinner/ that mom of bride and bride will have fun decorating with my flowers. This gives me a chance to learn flower growing. BTW - it's my gift to the family so it's a win/win (as long as I get some blooms).
I love this! Thanks so much for sharing- what a special blessing for both you (who gains experience) and your friends (who get to savor your blooms on their special day). Way to go 👏👏💛
Your videos are always so informative. Do you have a video on how you grow the tulips in bulb crates? The accountant was my investment that helped me. Thanks for sharing your story. ❤
Thank you for the kind words! So happy to hear that hiring an accountant helped you on your journey as well! I did share a video earlier this year about "Growing Tulips in Crates".. you might have to scroll back a few- plus I'll be sharing more tulip content in the near future as well that details which specific varieties I loved/hated this year :)
Awesome! You'll find that video is already published on our channel :) Just look for "Will Better Photos Help You Sell More Flowers?! A Closer Look at How I Document Flowers on Our Farm"
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your experience 💕 Your videos have been so informative! I am a novice at growing annuals. Only one I have grown is the sunflower. I’m looking forward to starting my cut flower garden in a 6 x 12‘ raised bed in the spring. I’d like to order humidity dome to cover the seats starting trays you linked in this video. However, when I click on the humidity dome link, the dome is completely different from the large one in your video. Are these shorter ones the ones you used now and will they work for my seedlings? Thanks so much! Love from Iowa😍
If you scroll back a few videos on our channel, we explain a bit more in-depth about our decision to grow tulips in crates this year .. but yes, more videos about tulips are in thr works as well 💛✨
I was so surprised to learn that imposter syndrome is a thing! Seems like it happens to everyone! Struggling to get past that because my dream is huge and I’m not getting any younger! 😊

Great idea! I you’re right.. both parties would benefit from this sort of arrangement 💛
I am feeling the ‘education as procrastination’! Although it’s also why I’m here 😂
Haha yes! 😆 I can totally relate! When I want to learn something new,, I easily can go down a rabbit hole.. it's a problem ;)

Thank you!
I appreciate your honest and realistic advice.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that you tune in to give our videos a listen 💛💛
I definitely use education as an excuse for procrastinating. I love the education you share but I also need to get moving!!!!
It really is the best kind of procrastination though 😉🤣
That is so true about educating yourself instead of just getting out there of doing it.
It really does help 💛
Thank you for sharing your heart and experiences❤
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!

Yep, I use the shorter domes now :) They work much better under my lights than the taller ones!
