I bought the MG5 LR after watching one of James reviews a few months ago gotta say this headline got me super worried 😟 but after watching total joy 😊. I've clocked 4000 miles now love the car it's a joy to drive I enjoy the whole ev experience including stopping having coffee with a charge, and thanks to James for getting me excited that pushed me to go buy one. Looks like I was also quite lucky to just get one as quickly as I did as well and in the colour I wanted. No problems yet just the squeaky mirror.

Our 50 kWh is brilliant. But I have a few grumbles…
It’s a bit graunchy in reverse, like the handbrake hasn’t quite come off.
The DAB radio crashed a few times (screen blank, music playing, can’t turn it off) and when trying to fix it I did a system reset and now the dash pod is in Fahrenheit and MG HQ don’t know how put it back to Celsius. Dealer reflashed the head unit which fixed the crashes, although Android Auto still doesn’t often work and you have to reboot everything. I switched to iPhone, which works much better.
Lastly, my economy isn’t great, but my wife gets much better numbers so I figure it’s just my driving style.

I got my MG nearly 2 yrs ago and it hasnt missed a beat. Done almost 24k now and not 1 thing gone wrong with it. I have solar panels, cheap Octopus tariff and live in an area with free charging (West Lothian in Scotland) and have spent less than £150 in charging it since new (and most of that was a trip to England) . Superb car. I also got a 0% loan from Scottish Government to buy it and half price home charger. Why anyone would buy a petrol car now I have no idea. Happy Days.

I was so lucky to get my MG5 LR exclusive at the beginning of June in the current climate and it is because of your videos and a few others that gave the confidence that this car was good at what it did. My previous car Citroen DS5 hybrid needed quite a bit of work and therefore wanted to go full electric especially with spiralling fuel costs. Looking around there was nothing to be had until I spotted this on Autotrader and managed to get down a deposit before it disappeared. I average between 30 to 50 miles a day on local A roads, country roads and town driving and coming up to 3000 miles I'm averaging 4 miles per kW hour (normal mode real world driving). I therefore granny charge overnight (approx 16 kW per night) on the cheaper tariff and thats enough with one fast charge only so far on a journey to London. Although this is a cheap EV it doesn't feel like a cheap car, sure its not the prettiest but once sat inside its a nice place to be. Its got an ok sound system and apple car play or android auto makes the infotainment system easy to use. I cannot express though how much I enjoy and use adaptive cruise control and MG pilot. Lane assist I turn off straight away but ACC I have on whenever I can and it makes driving so easy and MG pilot on motorways is a blast. The practicality of having an estate is also good, already we have hauled quite a bit of stuff including a upright fridge freezer that i managed to get in and shut the tailgate. The ride of the car is fantastic putting many an expensive car to shame and take off from still will snap your head back (overtaking not a problem). Importantly a 7 year 80,000 mile warranty is great peace of mind. On a other note a mechanic friend of mine now has my old DS5 and is guiding it back to health to have as his daily driver at nearly 200,000 miles. I've already emailed you guys about servicing my vehicle and look forward to meeting you when that comes round.

Thanks for this and welcome to the world of EV ownership. We’ve an e-Niro since March 2019 and love it but the Chinese built cars will really shake things up over the next few years...you wouldn’t want to be running a Ford, Vauxhall or even a Toyota dealership. We live in France and were in Bordeaux recently and saw an MG ZS being used as a taxi. An old Mitsubishi dealership in Poitiers we know is being converted into an MG shop getting ready for the launch of the MG4. Things are moving rapidly.

12 month old MG5 SW Exclusive and I've done 35k miles. Same experience as yourself driving it, it really is comfortable, it just goes and goes.
Only 2 issues, one is a design prob, the rain/light sensor box in the front windscreen blocks 25% of your view, especially turning left and I hate it.
2nd issue happened just last week, HV battery disconnect and a host of other faults. Nothing I did would clear it and ended up having to get the AA. AA guy says there's a software update to fix this issue. No faults showing on the odb2 but he cleared it anyway and in his words "hey presto" the car sprang back to life.

Yes, thanks, I did realise that a garage using Kia parts and recommended lubricants etc and following correct service etc was allowed under the revised act. Quick disclosure - I'm a top fan of this channel ( have been for years) and must have watched most of your episodes and reviews more than once. A while back, after too many decades behind the wheel to remember, and several years driving EVs, I finally decided to treat myself to my first ever new car. Needless to say, you'd already made my choice for me. The MG5 long range and, what's more, I only had to wait 6 months for delivery (which, in this day and age, amazed me - I was very lucky indeed). I love it. I really, really love it. I can't begin to tell you how much I love it. It just goes on and on and on. It's the first EV I've ever driven that's a conscientious objector to charging. I'll be doing 15k miles a year and it'll probably refuse to go anywhere near a charger until after its first service. Do I love it like you love it? No, much more. I'm trying not to get carried away with myself here, but I reckon I probably love it more than you. Much more than you. In fact, I'm absolutely certain that I do. Actually, I'm totally positive that I do. There, does that answer your question? 🤣🤗🤣

A recent holiday over a month saw me travelling 1684 miles with a recharge cost of £143.00 GBP.
My wife & I are both pensioners & looking at the cost of fuel are so glad that we got the car when we did. £3k from the government, £4k from MG, £1k trade in on my old car plus an interest free loan from the energy Saving Trust.
We live in the top end of North East Scotland so getting to England is quite a distance (well it would be in an ICE car.)
The only problem we had was with a public charger in Dumfries and Galloway when we changed it up to 95% & we got error messages about the HV battery and the car was completely dead, leaving it for about an hour we came back & everything was ok, since then we only charge 85% at public chargers but upto 100 % on our wallbox.

Managed to get my MG5 last November. £24k. Amazing deal on it. Have done a little over 9000 miles in it, and the only problem I've had with it was charging it when I first got it, and realising I'd been doing it wrong. So a problem with myself, not the car.
It has saved me a massive amount on fuel because I live in Scotland and a lot of Chargeplace Chargers are still free.
Have done 2 long trips down to England, and whilst the missus hates waiting for it to charge, I think its great. My 400 mile trip to Great Yarmouth was a doddle and I've never felt so refreshed after a long journey.
The only drawback I can think of is that it doesn't have an accompanying app, but t'is certainly not a deal breaker.

Have not looked back, and I am full of praise for this car. I have driven many cars over my 50 plus years of driving, petrol, diesel, and soft hybrid. German, Japanese, Korean, and obviously British. None have made me smile every time I drove them, this one does. This is what the EV market requires, Very disappointed with the major car manufacturers are persistent in making heavy SUV’s. They are missing a wonderful market to tap into, that is affordable cars that are good for the environment and what the majority of joe public would be happy to be converted to EV motoring. Can’t wait to see the 100000 mile video 👍

My first electric car and over 19k on the clock with 3 weeks until 1 year old. I've never done morethan 13k in a year with over 50 years of owning a car. No problems at all. Very comfortable to drive and very economical. I was averaging 4.2miles per Kw/h before winter arrived. Over winter it dragged that figure down to 3.6. It was recouping the fuel figure when I took it for 1st service in mid May. Averaging 4mpKwh at that time.
Since then I zeroed all the trip data and now I am averaging 4.4, but often seeing 5.3 on individual journeys.

Hi James, I could not let this pass without a big thanks to you and Kate.
I took delivery of an MG5 LR Exclusive two weeks ago. I could not get a delivery of a new one after a four month wait, so tracked down a 22 reg with 2500 on the clock. I had test driven an MG5 twice. Before that, a top spec Jaguar I Pace, then an Audi Etron 55, Citroen EC4, Nissan Leaf, a Kia E-Niro, and a Hyundai Ioniq 5. In the end, I concluded that the best overall bargain, taking everything into account, is the MG5.
I have owned for the last 10 years a beautiful shiny black C5 Tourer - hydro suspension - which I bought with 10,000 on the clock, and loved it. I will miss the old lady, sad to wave goodbye as the truck drove away to that great scrapyard in the sky.
So, that's my experience. And why did I choose the MG5?
Initially, the OTR price. With PX it was £27,000.
Secondly, the comfort. The in-town suspension is a bit bouncy, but quiet as my old Citroen both in town and on the motorway. Very comfortable to drive and adjust to. The manual reads at times like that of a 747 school for pilots, but with a little application I found I could get there.
Bells and whistles? Well, my old Citroen had all of them, except for a colour screen and navigation (later - and final versions - of the C5 tourer had one). Current cars boast about all kinds of stuff, but the C5 had them all. I wonder where all these expert journalists have been for the last fifteen years? They speak as if current software is some kind of miracle. The nicest thing was I've had C5 tourer full electric seats with two driver memorised settings throughout. The MG5 seats are just as comfortable and driver side electrics are a doddle to use.
I've watched your videos and they are impressive. Right down to close-ups of brake disks. Very reassuring. Just one question, if you have time to answer. The box you have inserted under the bonnet: Does it break the warranty? The manual warns about high voltage under the bonnet, so I just wonder.... It might help all of us if you could video/explain how you did it.
I loved your comment about the Model 3. (Skeleton in a biscuit tin?) Elon won't like that one.
    Kindest to you and Kate.

Had my MG5 LR since September 2021. 16k miles, and been all over the country. Great car. Yeah Squeaky mirrors here too in the summer months. Three problems. Firstly - Charging. The most unreliable charges seem to be GridServe units. Not sure why. But it’s 50/50 chance that the charger will work at any given time with the MG5. Other chargers are fine. Second problem. Leather seats - not great in the summer. Seats got so hot on the hottest day of the year that I couldn’t sit in the car for more then 10 seconds. Had to start the car without sitting, run the air on on full for 3 or 4 minutes before getting in. Then when my wife got out of the car, the pattern print of her dress seem to be ‘imprinted’ on the passenger seat now. Third problem, the boot lid rattled and had to be taken in for repair. Something to do with the lock system. Replaced under warranty. Wish the infotainment system was better and on some occasions it has rebooted mid journey. Other then that - It’s bee a great car. Drives well, holds the motorway well. Gets up to speed quickly and is comfortable to drive.

The only thing that I have my eye on to replace it with is the new version of the MG5 with an app (which I do miss from having a Leaf) and more range.
The one thing that I am going to change, though, is the windows; it doesn't have much in the way of UV protection and in the last few months I've really felt that, but when the worst thing that you can say about a car is that you wish the windows had better UV treatment that's praising with faint damning.

That comes from some of the large SUV that require very large batteries to give the range. Often they are over 2.5 tons.

Got the MG5 LR Exclusive. Done over 19k miles (almost 20k) in 7 months. The car is excellent. Consistently getting about 3.6mi/kWh with half city and half A road driving in the summer. So far had to replace the original front tyres at about 15k miles. Garage said the front wheels were out of alignment so tyres wore out prematurely. Also I drive it like I stole it. Put Michelin Primacy 4 tyres on it and now it handles like it's on rails. The car loves being thrown in and out of corners like a go kart.
Major complaints are the lights are terrible at night, I can barely see the colour of the car in front of me on the motorway at night at 100 yards. Infotainment system just randomly decides to no work sometimes, the radio will still be playing but the screen will be black, funnily enough it still responds to touch controls but the display just shows a black screen. Other than that the car has been sound.
First service done at about 16.5k miles showed about 1% battery degradation. Car doesn't feel like it's lost any range so far. In city driving it can do well over 200 miles@4mi/kWh, official claims of 250 miles are exaggerated, probably more like 220-230. At 70mph it can do about 190 miles@3.3mi/kWh.
If MG can sort out their supply issues and long delivery times then the MG5 would probably quickly replace Toyota Priuses/Hyundai Ioniqs as the car of choice for Private Hire/Taxi drivers. Absolutely nothing is better value right now.

I keep cars a long time and the cars I have owned since about 1985 (when Porsche started using galvanised sheet steel on the 944) or perhaps 2005 for most other makes with seam sealer, wheel-arch liners etc. have been so much better than those that came before. Hi. Battery SOH 98.7%. The rear brakes sadly do this, especially in reverse.

Great vid.. I've had my SR since September 21 and I'm just coming upto 11k..
I was astonished to see when I checked battery deg it was still at 100%..
I did see yours was on 98.7 and for a car that I'd imagine is being rapid charged a few times a day?
    That's excellent to see.

Great statement from Matt ' if we can't fix it...' if there are any high mileage issues you may be the first to discover them and come up with economical fixes, add them to your skills repertoire, which you can then offer as a service to customers. At least the Tesla Model 3 'skeleton in a biscuit tin' is good for one day a year.... Halloween 🎃 👻

@@Jamesandkate Not really. These were the stock 18" tyres supplied with the car and many owners (according to the ID.3 forums) replace them when they are able. They have less tread when supplied than most other manufacturers - 6mil I think. Once they got thin the road noise became unacceptable and I was pleased to get rid as I stopped feeling safe on them. From what I read, 8k - 12k is a typical replacement time.
