I was born and raised in Long Beach California where Sublime is from. I had the honor of seeing them before they were big in a backyard party back in the early 1990's. I can still remember the vibe of their music when I saw them play and how it made me feel. It was something really special and different from anything I had ever heard at that time. And yes they had lots of influence from Mexican culture growing up a white boy in the LBC just like I did. The Mexican brothers were our homies and family.
OMFG The Violent Femmes!!!! DUDE I thought I was the only one that loved them in the 90's! hahahah Them and the Ramones...hell yeah! Damn....I'm old as fluff. lol
To this day, I'm still blown away by 40 oz to Freedom, how confident and comfortable with itsef it is, for a debut album from a group of 20 year old kids.
Im very glad to hear you exploring the music period loosly defined as "the 3nd wave of ska" 311 and sublime were part of an era where the resurgance of Ska music rooted in the 60's (Al Capone - Prince Buster) that be came re popularised in the 80's (Ruder Than You - The Bodysnatchers) then made a comeback in the 90's. Sublimes influence on music of this era cannot be understated. You can see Sublimes influence on music still, in bands like "10ft Ganja Plant"
Despite wearing their influences firmly on their sleeves, they were amazingly innovative, blending styles in a way that hadnt quite been done before, at least not as well, from ska and reggae to SoCal punk, along with heavy doses of Chicano and hip hop cultures. They presaged the impact hip hop would have on rock, and youth culture in general, later in the decade.
Bradley was ahead of his time. He encapsulated that moment in time. With song about the LA riots, loving Reggae and being an addict in the most beautiful way only he could. Sublime is the sh!t, almost every song is about that early 90s rage and beauty. I was introduced to sublime in Venice when I was 10 years old, I stopped on the boardwalk and watched him perform for about 40 mins, my family walked away and lost me for that time. He was playing Jimi and then turned it into Soul Rebel by Bob Marley as he rapped the chorus. I was hooked. He has always been an inspiration and he adopted that chicano/cholo culture. RIP Bradley & Lou Dog 😢
This song has made it on my "forever playlist" after hearing it the first time when it first came out. The vibe of the song gets to my core to this day.
Sublime just had a vibe with every song. Put a smile on my face. I love caress me down and the way he flows from English to Spanish. I always forget that he died before they made the video
Damn, the parts you didnt remember ARE the song to me - that was my whole original conception of Sublime - sweet sounding songs w/ hard AF lyrics. This is from their self-titled third album, easily their most commercially successful, but their debut, 40 oz. To Freedom, will always be one of my favorite albums of all time. Every song is a banger, a wholly original (despite containing six covers) blending of reggae, ska, and SoCal punk with heavy Chicano and hip hop influence - it is very much OF 1992, yet also completely timeless. Ending with a song of appreciation for the wisdom emparted to them by KRS-ONE, and a heavenly, acoustic rendition of By the Rivers of Babylon, it's amazingly confident and comfortable with itself for a debut from some 20 year old kids.
The sky/California reggae sort of sound is just such a vibe. It's like, chill but energetic at the same time. It's like it harnessed the power of early, natural ganja.
I grew up in So. Cal with my teen years being through the 90's, and this song has always been a vibe for me. I still listen to it on warm days with my windows down when I am missing the beach or California. ❤️🌴 Oh and the Violent Femmes are classic and so rad, my friends and I listened to them all the time in the 90's.
Always loved this song and knew what it was about, so, your reactions to the new 45 was hilarious 😂. Great reaction and I second you doing some Violent Femmes reactions.
I remember the 1st time I heard a Mexican coworker say "sancho" after someone sneezed and learning about Sancho😂😂 This song was the 1st thing I thought of, and it all made sense after blindly singing it throughout my teens
Bradley Nowell missed the 27 Club by just a few months. RIP Sublime was the soundtrack to my junior high and high school days, “40oz To Freedom” album was one of the only tapes I had, when tapes and walkmans were still barely a thing.
To the best of my knowledge, singer songwriter Brad Nowell died shortly before the release of the third self titled album in 1996. Since then the band has continued writing music with different frontmen using the moniker "Sublime with [Insert Stagename Here]"
Sublime encapsulated the Long Beach and west coast culture. The whole scene had a mesh of multiple cultures and backgrounds, because Southern California (Long Beach specifically) is a melting pot. We all knew each other, hung with each other, fought each other and drank together. This band is Southern California in the real sense, not that nonsense Hollywood bs
Hell yeah! Sublime is my jam I’m literally wearing my sublime shirt right now. I’ve been bumping this shit since ‘94. I would definitely recommend the Violent Fems as well. They’re from my home town of Milwaukee and I’ve seen them live multiple time at Summerfest. Summerfest is a huge musical festival held every year in Milwaukee and at one point I believe it was the world’s largest but I don’t think it is anymore.
I grew up in Long Beach where Sublime was from. I used to work at the mailbox place where they had their fan club mailbox and I was there when the boxes came in with their first album 40 oz to Freedom (Skunk Records 1992) and they gave me the very first copy. The Dalmatian Lou Dog - they brought him in when he was just a puppy and its always crazy seeing the videos with him cause I'm always like.. I know that dog!!!! got a lot of Sublime on my beach jams playlist
I fucking LOVE the Violent Femmes, please do some reactions. I was actually looking for Femmes reactions this week and I can't find many and it's mostly just one particular song and they have multiple bangers.
***GOING THE DISTANCE*** by Cake from the same time period, I always played those back to to back back in the early 90s...reminds me when I ran from the Texas law to Arizona for a Summer...fun times...I took a Dalmaton named Dominoe with me for my outlaw mountain waterfall adventure. :) ~Grandma
Oh damn Sublime .....the entire album this was on was fire if you love bass which I do Caress Me Down is the song you gotta listen to.....they are doing shows with new member I seen I believe last year they was at the Hollywood Casino & Race Track in Wv.......Y'alls reaction was priceless
I loved Sublime back in high school (late 90s). They are very underrated. Many of their songs are like this. Hope you review/revisit more of their tracks.
This is a favorite band of mine. I have most of their albums. Really love the vibe of drunk, high fucked up So Cal skunk ( ska+punk) with the little interludes of them chilling, going to the store, or the skits with a crazy mental patient Raliegh Theodore Sakers are just some of the chill dope funny happy vibes I remember from this music. It lives in my heart forever. I can sing the majority of the Sublime album to this day.
Great song to react to! Weather just broke where I am after a long bad spell of ick. Do more Sublime! They weren't around long, but they have a great catalog.
You're feeling that reggae vibe that Sublime had! If you really want to feel good, check out Beres Hammand "I Feel Good" and "Rockaway". You will be transported to another time and place!
Loved hearing this song in the club. Everyone in the club used to scream out that part ""i got something for his punk ass" good times that is for sure. Love how the video and lyrics of the song have nothing to do with each other. The song is about a sancho that is messing with the guy's woman.
The whole album is fantastic. I highly recommend it. Lead singer was dead before the album blew up, that's why they showed him in the video the way they did.
Brad spent some time in the Virgin Islands with his dad when he was 11 which exposed him to Reggae His dad influenced him with guitar and the Jim Croce sound while he learned piano from his mother. Yes, he passed away just after their major label release in 96. It's very sad as Bradley was a great songwriter and would have def had some more hits. You have to react to "Badfish" It's a great tune
What I got, Wrong Way, April 29th 1992, Get Ready, Pawn Shop, Doin' Time, 40oz to Freedom, Smoke 2 Joints, Ebin, Date R*pe, Rivers of Babylon, Caress Me Down, Badfish are all absolute killer tracks. And if you wanna little extra fun What I got Reprise is awesome basically acoustic version. With Sublime you gotta just look at it as stories for the sake of stories. Just chill and enjoy
Sublime has some really dark lyrics with such a mellow vibe. Like Cypress Hill’s original version of Kill a Man, sone early Chili Peppers, and some other bags around that time.
Bradley was part of the 27 club, I think. Also the dog was his dog Louie. These guys give off the good vibes because they're reggae/ska adjacent. They're somewhere in between the Mexican culture, hip hop, punk rock, and Ska. Bradley Nowell was a genius and yeah they are gangster AF. Their whole catalog is great. Every tune people suggest is correct. They're that good. My favorite is that they did a song about the LA Riots called April 26, 1992. As powerful as Rage, but a vibe! And Don is 100% right about Violent Femmes. I'm also picturing him all geeked out on acid. Absolute legend.
11:10 - there is a huge difference between hearing a song and actually listening to a song. The way we change over time makes that even more interessting. For example "Father and Son" is a life long listening experience.
Sublime is the magic mix of punk, ska, hiphop, rock, reggae, funk, surf, latin and whatever else brad liked............... toss it in the bowl and start smokin................ not a bad song in their whole catalogue.........
You gotta check out all their other stuff, too, man! It’s like listening to Bob Marley or something. It can transport you to a time and place that you’ve never even been!
The lead singers son just performed with the rest of the band at Coachella last week. It was creepy how similar he sounded to his dad. Please check it out
How you not heard the last part is crazy. I listened to this album in the late 90's and was questioning everything. "Caress Me Down" has a whole Spanish verse. I've seen a couple versions online. The album one was graphic enough I don't know how much you can get away with on YT.
You guys should listen to their song: "April 29th 1992" from the Same album. It's about being in LA during the Rodney King riots. Or if you want another vibe like "Santeria", their song "Badfish" is one that takes me back and gives me that summer, youth feeling. I'm sure you've heard it even if you don't know it. They had many bangers though. Classic.
Bradley Nowel died before the release of their breakthrough album, the dalmation was his dog and I believe was featured in most/all of their videos from this album.
Brad Nowell unfortunately left this world at the young age of 28 due to a heroin overdose. He was found in his hotel room on the ground with his dalmatian, Louie or Lou Dog, whimpering next to his body. He left behind a wife and 1-year-old son. Fast forward 28 years and his son Jakob, at the age of 28, has reunited the band's remaining members and stepped into his dad's place actually using and playing all of his dad's old equipment. I would also like to suggest some No Doubt. Mainly the songs "Don't Speak" "I'm Just a Girl" and "Spiderwebs." This was Gwen Stefani's original band. A punk rock band, and she and her band were extremely close to Brad and Sublime in the 90's.
Brad was 28 when he died. He made it 3 months past the 27 club. Listen to Caress Me Down (but probably a little graphic for the channel) and April 29, 1992 Edit: Another of my favorites is Saw Red with Gwen Stefani back when she was just coming up
I feel like this song is very similar to “The Last Resort” by Papa roach. Where everybody’s vibing to the song so much that they don’t realize it’s a pretty dark song
My son was a huge Sublime fan. He was 20 when he died 10 yrs ago. Every time i hear their music its like having Jake close again😢
Sorry for your loss 😔
I’m sorry for your loss . ❤
😢
I'm a vanilla white redneckish dude love this song and pumped up kicks
Wow, I can't even imagine. My son is 18 now and a freshman in college. I'm so sorry for your loss.
I was born and raised in Long Beach California where Sublime is from. I had the honor of seeing them before they were big in a backyard party back in the early 1990's. If you haven't seen it yet. Brads son now plays with them and sound just like his dad
OMFG The Violent Femmes!!!! DUDE I thought I was the only one that loved them in the 90's! hahahah Them and the Ramones...hell yeah! Damn....I'm old as fluff. lol
Me too . But I wouldn’t be 20 or thirty for anything . I’m
Loving this time .
Love The Violent Femmes! In a league of their own. The Ramones, too!
@@jessicaleblanc-nh1yl If you like the VF, check out a band called 'James'. The album James Laid was out of this world! Still a favorite of mine!
90s? 70s and 80s
Violent Femmes were my favorite growing up and proud to say my teenage kids know all their songs.
" What I Got " and " Wrong Way " are good ones by Sublime.
Anything on that CD is good. Bought it and found out Bradley was dead, tragic.
I'm a sublime superfan but I just can't get down with wrong way. (I mean, I still sing if it's on... I just don't feel good about it lol)
@@kohrmann1016 its catchy to me. I've always liked it.
In my opinion Sublime is the greatest band to ever exist. They've been on my every day playlist for or almost 30 years now
well to each there own! I rally like them but only a few good songs, so greatest not quite!
To this day, I'm still blown away by 40 oz to Freedom, how confident and comfortable with itsef it is, for a debut album from a group of 20 year old kids.
Sublime is such a vibe, man. Brings me back to the days driving aimlessly around in summer with the windows down and blasting sublime. Good times. 😊💜💜
That’s exactly the memories it’s bringing back for me as well!
Im very glad to hear you exploring the music period loosly defined as "the 3nd wave of ska" 311 and sublime were part of an era where the resurgance of Ska music rooted in the 60's (Al Capone - Prince Buster) that be came re popularised in the 80's (Ruder Than You - The Bodysnatchers) then made a comeback in the 90's. love the violent femmes- add it up , country love song , blister in the sun and much more. Nice rabbit hole to follow
Blister in the sun, yes!

Sublime were like a modern day credence Clearwater-simple catchy rock sounds with a hometown vibe
This song has been on my forever playlist since day one!

Please please do the Femmes! Fantastic memories to their music. They still tour and it is the best time!
I just hope IF they do, it’s not “blister.”
I’m so excited for your reaction to this. Sublime is my favorite band of all time I lived very close to Garden Grove Ca..!
To the best of my knowledge, singer songwriter Brad Nowell died shortly before the release of the third self titled album in 1996. Since then the band has continued writing music with different frontmen using the moniker "Sublime with [Insert Stagename Here]"
They tour w/ Rome. seen them several times. Pretty darn good and keeps all the good vibes going.
Also check out long beach dub all stars

This song was the first tattoo I got for my music sleeve when I was 19.
And plan to wear their tee tomorrow for 420. 20 yrs later😂
EPIC.
For those who don’t know, “Sancho” ain’t one specific dude. “Sancho” is a term for whoever messing around with your girl behind your back.
Bruh I'm loving the deep dive into older music. So much truth in the lyrics ❤❤❤❤
This is a great thing about reggae & ska. It often has a big message but it’s so upbeat.

100% agree, Easily one of the greatest of all time.

More Sublime!!! By far one of my most favorite bands of all time.
the LBC! Imagine LA county in the early 90s- still one of the top 5 favorite bands for me!
You gotta do "April 29th 1992" by Sublime. Its a little more rap-ish, and the meaning behind it is dope
Here in yhe north east we have a cover band who play mostly sublime songs. Got to love it
FYI, Brad's son took over the vocals for the band and they were just at cochella.
Check out; Caress Me Down. It so Chicano. He sings in Spanish. Bradley Nowel died, I hear, at a record release party! Sad
YEEEESSSSSSSS
Violent Femmes!! You triggered memory lane for me with that! Would love to see Black P react to that, lol!!
How fitting. I'm actually wearing my Sublime shirt today 😉
Cali baby the good old days Yes sir
Sublime was awesome. You should definitely check out more. They were perfect at mixing ska, hip hop, and reggae together.
And they got their break on rock radio. They're a staple on rock radio.
Dang! This album is giving me serious flashbacks, so nostalgic. I can smell the weed and patchouli 😂
You're feeling that reggae vibe that Sublime had! If you really want to feel good, check out Beres Hammand "I Feel Good" and "Rockaway". You will be transported to another time and place!
Your faces were the best thru this whole reaction! ❤
Loved hearing this song in the club. Everyone in the club used to scream out that part ""i got something for his punk ass" good times that is for sure. Love how the video and lyrics of the song have nothing to do with each other. The song is about a sancho that is messing with the guy's woman.
Fantastic song
I agree with you that I don't often listen to sublime, but when I do it's a vibe
The whole album is fantastic. I highly recommend it. Lead singer was dead before the album blew up, that's why they showed him in the video the way they did.
Yup I can still remember every lyric!
Bro! This whole album is fire 🔥
The Violent Femmes! "Blister In The Sun" is awesome!
Crazy! The same thing happened to my dog way back in the day, except it was a single sugar cube, but same circumstance.
Violent Femmes "Kiss Off" is one of the ANTHEMS of Generation X!
Yes - go for Violent Femmes!!! This reminds me of Time Bomb by Rancid.
Ruby ruby ruby-ruby soho
I think you two would enjoy Informer by Snow. You won’t regret it! Cheers! 🤘🏻🇨🇦🤘🏻
That would be a potentially hilarious reaction!
No one knows the lyrics to that song 😂😂😂
😂😂

Yay!!! You did it! Awesome!
I always liked Caress Me Down. I was always impressed by how he seamlessly switches between English and Spanish during it.
Doing time featuring the Pharcyde from the What I Got seven song single would be up y'alls alley

a less common, yet great sublime tune is daterape.. the video is awesome.. and yeah, Sublime is a vibe for sure.
Your faces...I'm cracking up.
Check out their first album Forty Ounces to Freedom its full of bangers
They have a shitload of great songs, definitely worth going down the Rabbit Hole.
I feel like this song is very similar to “The Last Resort” by Papa roach. Where everybody’s vibing to the song so much that they don’t realize it’s a pretty dark song
