Can Mark Cavendish break the record for Tour de France stage wins? | Beyond the Podium | NBC Sports

I'm a huge Cav fan and even I don't think Cav will get #35 BUT if you know Cav you'll know that he always pulls a rabbit out of the hat when everyone is counting him out and I do think it's possible but it will take a combination of things to go wrong for several of the sprinters for him to win. Keep in mind he is technically the best sprinter to ever stomp the pedals. His tactics and his technical superiority is what COULD get him #35. Dont forget je did get a win at Tour of Hungary this season and it was a solid sprint. I'm hopeful. I give him a 60/40 chance. NEVER COUNT CAV OUT!!!
🤘🏻🇬🇧
The new question is... will he get #36?!
@@RickFishUK personally I don't care and I don't know if Cav cares but to be perfectly honest with you that is going to give him a huge boost so #36 is very possible. I'm going to say YES
🤘🏻🏴
Sam Bewley is an awesome DS!. Great to hear that IPT is gradually developing Matthew Riccitello.
Looking at the stage 1 profile, I would not be surprised to see cav miss the time cut off. Better be sure his ebike isn't checked.
But Sir Marc is good at getting over these kind of stages. True age is catching him up, but he has enormous experience as how to survive these hard climbing stages.
Please publish the evidence that Sir Marc, or indeed any other rider in the tour cheats.
We await your next comment with eager anticipation.
I fervently pray that Cav achieves his goal. We have seen him be a magician in the past, but don't know that with the slew of young sprinters today he will have a good opportunity. Nevertheless, Mark Cavendish is and will always be THE GREATEST SPRINTER OF ALL TIME, no matter who else (JP) claims that title. No other sprinter today will ever reach the pinnacle that Mark has reached.
You guys know more than me, but I think Phillipsen is “cruisin for a bruisin”. Fingers crossed for
Sir Cav.
Why? Remember, Cav has crashed out more competitors than any other rider in the bunch. If you're to young to remember do some research - one in particular, Cav nearly ending Heinrich Haussler's career (just one of many).
@@isitrachelorj3953 I do remember him taking down Simon Gerrans in a finish.
Great interview
It's difficult for Cavendish to win number 35 because it's not about the sprint itself. The main issue is to survive all those difficult stages, with so many mountains, and still be fresh enough for the occasional sprint. That, is the hard part when you get older.
Come on there’s plenty of other great riders to focus on vs an old washed up Cav
True, but the dude is 39, and still has a chance for stage wins. And if he does, he breaks the record. So long as he's still looking good, we will hear about Cav on every sprint day. I loved watching him in the 2021 Tour we he had a sort of "comeback" and he won 4 stages and the green. I think he has an uphill battle to beat the young guys, but it will be fun to tune in and see if he can do it (beat the record).
Jonas is doing great by the way, he did a few monster rides in the region of Tignes together with Tratnik, Laporte and van Aert this week, with about five thousand elevation meters in each ride... Count on him to win his third Tour...
It will be quite sus if he is on the same form he was before the crash
🤘🏻🇬🇧
It isn’t about what power he is doing. Pogi was doing great power past year too. The question comes on week 3 will the form still be there. Pogi recently admitted that his form fell off in the tour last year.
@@Patrick_Runnels I agree. That's why I personally say "form" and not numbers. The numbers are just part of the equation
🤘🏻🇬🇧
he absolutely does not deserve this particular accolade - he's a great guy and a great sprinter - but the TDF was/is designed for an all around brilliant rider not a specialist..and the fact he may be even be mentioned in the same breath as Merckx is unconscionable within itself..can u imagine if Merckx had anything that resembled s team around him in his day..Mark had to be pulled numerous times just to finish some of the mountain stages...
Cav has had no business being at the tour for the past few years, let alone now. He's all we hear about in the TDF, every day. Don't care. Far better riders and more interesting personalities to talk about these days. He's always sour in interviews. He's taking up space on his team's roster. He's robbing multiple teammates of stage win opportunities -- multiple people have to drag him over every significant climb, and through the valleys afterward. Have you not seen his awful climbing form in this years the Tour de Suisse? Was sick of listening to NBC blather on endlessly about him 10 years ago.
Cav was washed up ever since Renshaw left to be a sprinter on another team. Renshaw was a HUGE part of Cav's success.
NBC, enough about Cav, please. Just stop. How about shifting your focus to new and upcoming riders instead?
And Mercx in his prime would have been dropped at will by the likes of Pogi, WVA and MVP. The overall quality of riders is so much higher now. Mercx would be a B tier rider today.
@user-re9pj6ep6g You must be new to bike racing. There are multiple races that are in the Tour. Season points, green jersey, stage win, Overall lowest time, best team.
TDF is the most popular and has a bit for everyone. Cav is a legend and honestly his story is more exciting to me than mutant pogi or mutant vingegard. We know to expect either Pogi or V will dominate everything but the sprints and all the interview questions will either mention V or P.
@@maddb3457 New? No. Tired of listening to NBC go on and on about Cav for a decade+? Yes.
Sick of replies on cycling videos when someone disagrees with you the go to, without a doubt, is "you must be new to cycling"
@@maddb3457 you didn't address any point the previous commenter made except the "Cav as a human interest story". That is not what the TDF is about. He is 100% spot on!
Nope
Quite frankly i hope he doesn't win another stage 🎉
gosh these guys are painful amateurs. bring back Chris Horner.
Mark's an underdog for sure, but I'm seriously rooting for him! First, as an old guy, I love "old guys beat young guys stories", and he's got a winning mentality that few other riders have. Never count Cav out.
mark got crowded ?
Simple answer on a simple question. No he can't unless the entire peloton does not start anymore and he's the only rider left... Even with most A sprinters not present this Tour Mark will have a hard time to get a top five sprint result. Milan, Merlier, Kooij and a number of others are not present when it comes to the sprinters.... But Pedersen, Philipsen, Girmay, Thijssen, van Aert, De Lie, Groenwegen and a few others will eat him up alive.
I have a lot of respect for what Cavendish did in his career, but he should have stopped a few years ago already. he's only making a fool of himself and can't even follow the peloton anymore in most of his races... But okay that is his choice...

I agree with you.
Yet he had multiple top 5 finishes last year including 2nd. And won the British championship the year before In spectacular fashion proving he was in great form but wasn’t selected. He definitely has a right to be there if he’s on form
He will need some luck.
Hahahahahahaha! He hasn't raced a "varsity" race since . . . No he can't win an honest bunch sprint, even against a slim sprinting field. If he could he would have been honing his form at BBT - a sprinters five day race. Instead he noodled around with the team cars at the TdS finishing 8 to 15 minutes down each day. Add the fact that the first bunch of stages at the TDF are unusually difficult and it's unlikely he'll ride more than the first week without some "shady" circumstances/assistance or allowance.
if tadej cracks as he did last year, "i;m dead", is it adam or jaoaoa?
That's not happening to Pogi again. He has lost 2 straight TDF when he expected to win and the form he's on this season and the things he's shown is so far is a sign that he's on form like never before. He will not crack. For the record I'm NOT a Pogi fan so I'm saying this as a neutral fan
🤘🏻🇬🇧
Adam, but pogi will not crack. Much more likely that he would crash (then it would be Adams team).
@@Messinumber1undisputedforever no Pogi will NOT crack again!! He's on the form of his life!! We've seen how great of a season he's been having. He won't be cracking at all
🤘🏻🇬🇧
God, i really,really hope not.
UAE could play the sky train strategy and nullify attacks with their climbers, keeping pogi's nose out of the wind until the last ks of mountain top finishes. thats what won froome 4 tours. its a boring conservative strategy but they have the team to do it. Pogacar should remember that hes not invincible and conserve as many matches as he can by using his team.
If anyone could get Pog to conserve matches 😂
Half of UAE’s team would be #1 riders on most others teams. Unreal.
I have a feeling Cav will crash out because he will be ALL IN LIKE NEVER BEFORE!!! He'll break himself into pieces trying!!!
🤘🏻🇬🇧
I hope he does, I don't think he will, but I understand why he's giving it another go. To be sure to be sure.
They can let him have a stage for viewership. Wouldn't be the first time. What's good for the goose....
No gifts.
He's DEFINITELY not getting a "GIMME" at the TDF!!
🤘🏻🇬🇧
Yeah, I’d hope not but seeing a couple instances where they really build someone up and then they win and it’s unlikely. Let’s hope not.
I think a stage win in the TDF is too prestigious for Cav to be gifted a win just for the sake of breaking the record.
@@lloydhlavac6807 absolutely. NOBODY is giving up a stage win at TDF!!! Unless it's Pogi giving Yates a stage win for helping him or something like that and that would only happen if Pogi was in yellow
