    I love being a stage manager! It's the best thing ever and my chosen career path. I would give anything to be apart of a production as great as Wicked.

      Go with non stop studying of other stage amnagers - you can tell how good they are by how the show flows, every text you can get you hands on, and SMor ASM any show you can - it has to be the primary drive in your life and then GET TO KNOW THE PROS - not as a fan, but as a pro who wants to make it to the boards of BROADWAY - you would not believe how fun it is.

    I didn't realize the temperature was so important, but as a meteorology student I can see why now that I think about it. The different densities of the air (hotter is less dense, colder is more dense) would create a flow between them, hence the billowing of the curtains your video mentioned. That's fascinating, I had no idea it applied to the theatre as well as the atmosphere.

    I am an aspiring stage manager, and I had the honor of meeting Molly Braverman, an ASM for the Chicago cast of Wicked, when they were in Columbus OH. It was so amazing, we got a backstage tour and everything....always going to be a major fan of this show, you guys are doing great things and letting me be apart of that for a few minutes meant the world to me!

    I’ve done community theatre for several years now, various tech jobs, I’ve just stage managed my 9th show, I’m the only stage manager in my company, it’s a small but mighty company. Though even with our smallish size I can see why broadway has multiple stage managers. It’s tough to be the only one..but I love it. I love helping bring a story to life., I’m not a performer in any way. So this is my contribution. I wish I could do it professionally but I don’t have the physicality required for it. We do 4 performances in a run. We do shows that are not often done. But should be! I just finished stage managing ‘ a Woman of no Importance’ Oscar Wilde. He’s one of my fav writers now. I love wicked to!

    You might have learned this by now, but before tech a stage manager is responsible for running rehearsals (under the director, obviously) and maintaining communication with the cast and the entire production team.

    I've been an actor for most of my life and got my first taste of stage managing a few months ago (since it was highschool theater I was the only stage manager so I "called the show" and made sure the set changes happened, etc.). I loved it so much that I began to consider doing it a lot in the future (even professionally) and I had one major question before I made that decision. What does a stage manager do before tech-rehearsals begin?

    • @TomorrowisYesterday
      @TomorrowisYesterday 2 года назад +1

      If anyone is still wondering the answer to this question (this was 8 years ago), it depends on the theater. At the theater I work at, they run the rehearsals. If an actor forgets a line, the stage manager is the one to call it out. They also keep track of whatever set pieces are ready for rehearsal use and figure out where each set piece and prop will be located at each point of the show. If the director is on-task enough to have sound effects loaded in time before tech week, the stage manager will play the sound effects through their phone with an external speaker. Also, if a key cast member is absent, the SM may fill in. That's about it. The key thing is they are at every rehearsal and are supposed to get there before everyone else and be one of the last ones to leave. And keep in mind every theater is different. The one I work at seats about 500 and is operated by a community college.

  • @yuvalkgn1
    @yuvalkgn1 11 лет назад

    Before a show is scheduled or a rehearsal (run thru) Is scheduled, a stage manager must make sure all lighting & scenery are ready for the top of act 1. They make sure everything is where it's suppose to be & that stage is clear & actors are ready.

    Ive recently ( at the age of 31 ) have though about going to college to major in theater .... but I have many people telling me not to do it, it doesn't pay well, its impossible to get into. And that I should go to school for a field that will pay me well like Medical or computers .... the only thing is performing arts is my passion. Do I want to do something I love, or do I want to go for something higher paying and be miserable at it ... Im leaning more towards a theater major still ...

  • @k.endlesss

    I think it depends on which level of theatre you are working on, and the people who are putting the show together.

    I have been an ASM for multiple shows at my high school, which puts on huge shows, and I stage managed peter and the starcatcher last year. Last weekend was opening night for A Midsummer Nights Dream and this is my closing weekend as well as my final goodbyes to my high school theater company. Do you have any tips for stage managing it. I have some really difficult cues where there are 4 sound cues a light cue and a curtain cue and then about 3 seconds later 4 more sound cues and then curtain and a light cue 2 seconds after that

    • @TomorrowisYesterday
      @TomorrowisYesterday 2 года назад

      Anyone 2 years plus wondering about this, I would say that unless there may be different people running it each night, it's ok to treat your tech crew like actors in a time like this. If there are 12 different cues inside 6 seconds (for whatever insane reason), give everyone a "standby transition" and then a "go". If the timing makes sense for a couple more standby and go's, then do it. But if there are that many cues that close together, you just have to trust your tech crew to memorize their job the way an actor would. Unless they're relying on cues from actors that they can't clearly see or hear. In that case I don't know.
      The key is practice it, practice it, practice it.

      One time one of my cast members had a seizure offstage and I had to trust one of my assistants to handle it while I was figuring out the intermission time and discussing with director about who to call to help her and it was so stessful! Also we had times where an actor was missing a prop and we had to quickly improvise and make a prop with the help of the props designer on the fly
