  • Trip to the region of Andalusia between July and August. This time it was a pretty good vacation and I even got my camera out from time to time to actually stay in the moment and just enjoy the atmosphere.
I think I managed to put together a pretty interesting itinerary. The trip started at the Malaga airport where I rented the car. From there I decided to enjoy the coast: Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Nerja, Motril and also Marbella.
Driving in the mountains and small villages is always one of my favorite things to do in any region. It's just so great to see these mountain villages and the scenery is just breathtaking. Of all these places, Ronda of course made the strongest impression on me.
Then we continued along the coastal roads to Tarifa to visit all the little destinations, beaches, villages, and hidden Roman ruins along the Atlantic coast. All the way to the oldest city, Cadiz, with great architecture and an old town with nice restaurants.
From Cadiz, we continued to Jeres de la Frontera, also a great town with lots of history. Of course, the tasting of sherry was a must.
We continued on to Seville and then to the mountains of Almodovar del Rio, where we spent 3 nights in a cozy house right on top of a small mountain with exceptional views of the mountain lakes. The infinity pool made you feel like a king. And it was so hot there, it was over 40 degrees Celsius.
We visited Cordoba, a beautiful city with lots of Roman history. I think it was the hottest day at that time. But still, we enjoyed everything even more.
From Cordoba, we drove straight through beautiful landscapes and endless olive trees to Jaen. And down to Granada. Unfortunately we did not have that much time to explore the area around Granada, but at least enough time to have lunch with a glass of cold sangria and a great view of the magnificent Alhambra.
Then it was back to Malaga, where we spent the last night of our trip. I was also surprised to find that the city was actually pretty cool, although at first I thought I would avoid it because it was too touristy for my taste.
All in all, it was a colorful area to visit. Definitely a place I will visit again. Driving around the country is an eye-opening experience. And when you move around the different regions, you get a much better feeling than if you just stay on the Costa del Sol, which is what most tourists do.
Each region is so different and diverse. And most importantly, when you change locations, the trip feels twice as long as it actually is. During this 2-week road trip, I stayed in 5 different accommodations. I think the best experience was staying at the Almodovar del Rio mountain house, right by the mountain lakes. It was just a fantastic and rural experience to see foxes and rabbits hopping around on the patio, geckos crawling around on the ceiling and even little scorpions coming out at night to hunt. Fortunately, the house was well sealed so these little creatures could not reach it even if they wanted to.
