Ab awful lot for an old man with a 2017 i3 and phone phobia to digest, but I really like the way you tutored it and gave me motivation to give it a try, step by step. Thanks
A headache was comming up just by the foughts of how to get these kind of stuff working. But with this tutual my i3 is perfect app connected and my headache has switched to pleasant thinking about technologies who are really helpfull. Thanks to you Martin!
Unfortunately the My BMW app no longer works for the older i3's here in the North America. I own a 2015 i3 REx with 27k miles. Communication was done over cellular connection by 3G cellular which is no longer supported. We had received a communication from BMW America that this is why the app would no longer be supported by 3G. They also stated that there is no technology upgrade that could be performed to get the system running again. Too bad for it was one of the best features of the car. Thanks for your amazing videos on the car.
Definitely a shame. Seems like we have at least a few years of 3G left in the UK. The newer i3's are equipped with 4G though, so will have plenty of life left in them.
@@wiselyauto I am seeing on some forum sites that the older 3G Telematics module (84.10 9 371 791-01) could be replaced with the 4G module (84 - 10 -6 - 836 -777). But the dealer has to then program the new module using ISTA+. Is that something your company could do? The cost of the new module was $700. It has a backup battery which was another $35. Thanks
Apparently this no longer works in the US. I feel like BMW should recall any car with already outdated 3G cell, and install 4lte so that their customers can use these features. Not cool.
The facelifted (LCI) cars should be equipped with 4G modems in the US, so should still work without any problems in the foreseeable future. We are looking into the upgrade options for cars equipped with the 3G system but it is proving quite complicated...
Another Great Tutorial - anybody know why my code from BMW cannot be read. It seems to come in, as the Notification is there but disappears quickly. I don’t see BMW messages where it normally is (2022 i3s). I did set this up easily in previous i3s. BTW I did have the tracking enabled and found it helpful (unlike mollyfilms below, )when previous car was stolen.
2023 Dec ; Hello, I just bought a 2015 i3 Rex ; are there any 4g or other upgrade paths in Canada because the MyBMW app does not communicate with the car for lack of 3g service ? Please help
Well, did everything as instructed for my 2017 i3 but only to be greeted on app with "No Active Subscription which is untrue. There are no apps or privacy setting to be found on my idrive controller. Googled problem for hours, not alone by any means. Deleted App. No time for stress.
Hello All, I recently bought a 2021 i3 in Uk. An issue I have is that I don’t get updates on the status of the car in the bmw app. I only get updated if I drive/open the car. Any help would be very much appreciated.
The car itself does, however this information is no longer obtainable through ConnectedDrive. If your car is ever in for any work, let us know as we can check this for you via ISTA (the official BMW diagnostic software). The information provided is: kilometres driven with REx running, total REx operating time in seconds and number of times the REx has turned on.
Thank you for the video. Informative and useful, but can you tell me how to change the range setting from miles to kilometers? As I live in Norway I would prefer km, but I can’t find the option in the app. In the car it displays km and metric in general. Thank you for the help
The app should mimick the settings of your car, but first, check whether your phone settings are the way you want them - langauge / location / default units etc. If all fails, you can try removing and adding the car back which usually clears most faults.
It's easy to swap the accounts even without the previous owner present. The car can only be assigned to one account at a time, so after you add it to yours, the previous owner's access is automatically removed.
Hey buddy, if the bmw has some purchased features for the old owner, will it be available for the new owner? In resume, are the features, you purchase from bmw, linked to the car itself or the user account used for the purchase?
It depends on what features exactly. Most of the subscription-based items do not transfer, but outright purchases (like for example unlocking CarPlay on vehicles with Enhanced Bluetooth) are linked to the vehicle, so they do transfer over.
Just recently got i3 and i’m wondering if locking/unlocking your car via app is prone to same vulnerability to retranslate the signal when you do it with the keyfob? Would appreciate the output or some info to read :)
It is not. The key fob operates at a different frequency and the car uses antennas to pick up the signal. The app pushes any commands to the BMW server, which subsequently pushes them to the car over cellular networks (3G or 4G LTE) - the car essentially behaves like a standard computer receiving information.
The car should still transmit that information, so try re-installing the My BMW app on your phone and make sure the car is parked in an area with good cellular signal.
I can't get My BMW to work on my i3. The one in this video must be a NBT-EVO. I have only NBT. Is there a different method or maybe doesn't even work on mine?
We have started hearing this more and more often for owners of the pre-facelift vehicles. It may have to do with the gradual discontinuation of 3G - a complicated topic we will try to address in a future video..
It should but we believe that only on the newer facelifted i3's which use a 4G connection instead of 3G (as the cellular providers have discontinued 3G networks).
It should, especially on the newer (facelifted) i3's but we have started hearing reports of pre-facelift owners struggling with connecting to their cars, as they rely 3G cellular networks.
The basic connectivity (for checking vehicle status, pre-conditioning, seeing the vehicle location, etc.) comes for free with the car and does not need to be renewed.
Tbh the app is pretty basic, it’s improved slightly over the years but it still is clunky. I don’t have the tracking on.. why do I want that? They charge companies get enough free info from me every time I plugin never mind being tracked.
The answer is a bit complicated. Theoretically it should, but those older i3's rely on 3G connection, which is slowly being discontinued by cell carriers, so would not count on it working much longer...

Martin your informative videos are the best….thanks!…new owner here.
As a newbie i3 owner (and self-confessed 'techno-phobe'...!) this was such a useful and informative video, Martin - thank you 👍
You’re super helpful.
I have a 18 a i3S, and send my parents (in their 80s who have a i3) and learn about their car from you. Thank you.
Thanks so much as I am new to BMW and this demo has made everything a lot easier
Great! now when I get my bmw i3 I will be able to have my bmw i3 on the app
Another superb video, thanks very much guys 👍

@@wiselyauto Do you know what model year is guaranteed to work in the UK? I'm looking for a 66 plate and I'm hoping this will work. Thanks
These features still work for my 14 plate i3
This is disappointing but I did like that I can program ( inside the car ) times to precondition the car.
Thanks, super helpful info, especially the map/send to My BMW!
Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you for informing how to do things with my i3! Off topic , can you recommend a link to purchase an apple play system for my i3?
great video thank you
Nice job👍

Can you check the inside of the car from the app?
Hi, pls is it possible to stop charging via app? Because i3 has not charging limit settings.
Great video.
Does the car store data on Rex usage?, either miles or time the motor was running?

Can I use this app for 2014 BMW i3?
I asked the same question. It seems like no is the answer.

@@wiselyauto Thank you for detailed explanation! 👍
Does this work on a 2014 i3? I know the software is different. But some of the functions would be nice to do.
It should, depending on cellular signal coverage.
No it won’t work. It needs 3g service and that’s no longer supported at least not here in the states
@@TyReSeDuJuaN thank you
