We all know Sonic 3 & Knuckles is one of the best Sonic games of all time right? Scratch that. We all know Sonic 3 & Knuckles is one of the best GAMES of all time, right? And one of the most significant things to come out of this masterpiece, was the rivalry turned friendship between Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna.
Join me as we analyze where their complicated relationship began. And discuss the many times these two have butted heads to try and answer who would win in a fight. Sonic Vs Knuckles, place your bets!
Sure, by the time Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes came along, these two were best buddies. And after that, Knuckles was pushed aside into obscurity until his low effort appearances in later games like Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces. And we'll be discussing all that too!
With Sonic Origins now nearly upon is, I can think of no better time!

@kian7406That doesn't mean he isn't an extrovert. Even when he decides to spend a bit of time away and explore alone, he still takes that almost unwaveringly confident, cocky and outgoing personality with him no matter where he goes. I'm sure in the real world, even highly extroverted people need to have a few moments to themselves. And also Sonic has moments where he gets his confidence knocked or becomes doubtful and upset like you described, but knowing Sonic, he bounces back from things like this very quickly and doesn't dwell on it.
This was the origin of Blue vs Red.
I think the Knuckles that started off was, in my opinion, the perfect rival to Sonic whether in design or in gameplay. So I think if they were to fight now I think many would say Sonic would win because of the amount of times Knuckles has been pushed to the comic relief bin. But when you think about it Knuckles and Sonic would be even, due to them having different advantages and disadvantages.

Actually knuckles destroys Mecha Sonic. There is a small detail when playing Sonic & Knuckles solo. If you get with sonic the 7 chaos emeralds, at the end you see some ruins of the death egg with an eggrobo raising and laughing as Dr.Robotnik. As I was a kid my interpretation is that in order to survive, Robotnik robotized himself / transfered his mind to an eggrobo. During Knuckles story, you fight against this Eggrobo. Now, there's one detail that not many people notices: when you defeat eggman and mecha sonic, everytime they fly away. But, in Sky Sanctuary, that's not what happens. Mecha Sonic actually is so strong that when hitting the Eggmobile, it blows up in pieces. It doesn't fade, it doesn't fly away, but it's the sole instance where it's blown into pieces. Mecha Sonic destroys definitively that eggrobo, being Robotnik or not. Well, when Knuckles defeats Mecha Sonic, he also blows into pieces. Knuckles was very, very strong, until he was made dumb and later replaced by Shadow.
An interesting theory on Robotnik and the Egg Robo. One that later games would seem to disprove but it’s still a cool theory! I never said Knuckles didn’t destroy Mecha did I? Knuckles was a top tier character back then. But as you said, swiftly made a meme and replaced by Shadow. Such a shame.

My guess would be that Knuckles is more powerful but Sonic can still win a lot of fights, like main characters overcoming a stronger enemy with technique or knowing when to exploit a weakness, every battle can tell a diferent story, honestly i kinda miss this Shonen like flavor the series had
Now that we are at it, Chaos energy would be a cool power system
Knuckles being the most exposed to the emeralds while not using them so he would be more of a defensive fighter
Shadow being designed to harness Chaos energy being an offensive fighter
Sonic being in a middle ground between natural strength like Knuckles but exploiting more the emeralds

I do love Knuckles but as you said wish he was written better after the beginning.
It’s a tough choice between the two and really depends on the circumstances. Fairly even rivals and I like that it could go either way.
Fleetway Knuckles is way more calm and collected than what I would expect from the chuckling echidna.
Archie Knuckles has an interesting story but is a little too political for this franchise.
Modern Knuckles is pretty much a joke to anyone who isn’t a die hard fan.
So that means the best Knuckles is Ugandan Knuckles!

Sonic and Knuckles used to be pretty evenly matched back in the day, they've kind of buffed Sonic and nerfed Knuckles over the years though.

Canonically Tails was with Sonic during his adventure in Sonic 3. So technically Knuckles lost to Sonic & Tails, not just Sonic. The only time in canon that Sonic & Knux fight 1 on 1 is in SA1 and they stalemate.

I believe that it doesn't matter who would win due to the fact that these two are tough in their own way, the are rivals for a reason, Knuckles being an wise protector of his Island and Emerald, having a no nonsense attitude to Sonic's laid back and carefree personality with attitude,
The clash of these two should always be there having this rivalry all be it more friendly, but still fierce and a treat to behold.

I would not like to start a war but...
Apparently Sonic's entire physique constantly grows infinitely and no I'm not kidding. Modern Sonic damaged the Egg Emperor in generations which he previously needed Knuckles to beat up in heroes, and even then Knuckles barely flinched it while Sonic with a single homing attack pushes it back a distance and damages it. There are more examples but this is the most common one. Also Sonic > all power types.
If you're wondering where I got this well I just do too much research on Sonic lol.
@@undeadbatman9762 I'm also aware of that. (Perfect chaos is another good example) It just sucks that we don't get to see modern knuckles' strength on display that often through gameplay anymore. If we did, It would be more believable that characters like knuckles can grow stronger too.

I just realised that when Knuckles gets zapped by Robotnik's Egg Mobile, his visible skeleton has fingers and toes. I am never going to be able to unsee that.

Anyway, awesome video as usual. I always enjoy listening to you talk about Sonic (& Knuckles, in this case). This is a very interesting matchup for sure as I can see scenarios where Sonic wins but also scenarios where Knuckles wins. I think Knuckles' fighting capability has been dreadfully underplayed in recent years, which unfortunately makes him come off as far weaker than he once was.

I feel like Sonic would win in a fight between him and Knuckles, since if I'm not mistaken Sonic does indeed beat Knuckles in a one on one fight in Sonic 3 right before Eggman comes and steals the master emerald.
As for Knuckles character, yeah he's.......he just isn't as cool or interesting as he used to be. Honestly Knuckles, Amy, the Choatix, Tails, and shoot basically everyone else is much better portrayed and cool in the IDW comics. The only exception is probably Shadow, but that's about it

So glad this channel was in my recommends! I watched some videos on a whim and was hooked. I never played Sonic&Knuckles so seeing this analysis to flesh out their rivalry is really cool! Wish Knuckles' character/story had more sustance in more recent Sonic games instead of just being comic relief.

Something I really like that Sonic Movie 2 added to the Sonic & Knuckles dynamic is that they bonded over that shared lost of loved ones at a similar age and makes their mutual friendship feel that much stronger.

tha was a good video , i would say sonic would win mainly because there is some thing people may not realize is that he is more power ful than people think , normally when some thing move so fast than there must a great amount of energy for high speeds to achieve that , sonic on other hand run at a crazy amount of speed which is speed of sound for as much as he want or even an entire day which require loads and loads of energy more than any one can imagine , i know knuckles has his own strength but it's not that great as sonic , he could become super but from what i see is that his super form in sonic and knuckles was probably a bonus for playing as him , but that my openion

i'm pretty sure there was a comic about super sonic vs hyper knuckles, of course, the 2 fought, though we never got to see who would've won, because due to the sheer power of the 2 clashing together, the area they were in was obliterated, knocking them out of their super forms
Always prefered playing as Knuckles in S3&K would love to see a knuckles spin off game 3d platformer that expands the lore of the echidnas

Adventure Knuckles is strong too.
In Sonic Adventure 1, Knuckles beats Chaos 6 with his bare fists until the point he forces it to spit out the Chaos emeralds. The fact that this fights exists implies that Sonic didn't really defeated Chaos 6, he temporarily stunned it to chase Eggman.
I think Knuckles from Sonic 3 & K would have won a fight. But nowadays it would go Sonic’s way in my opinion. But equally like you said they wouldn’t fight at all now

I do have an in dept character analysis of Knuckles on the channel from back in December. You might have missed it. I really want to read the Archie comics so my knowledge of this feud can come full circle! They didn’t release here so never had them as a kid.

I think it'd be a tie between the two if sonic doesn't come out on top sometimes. But I love knuckles, think that he was good from the classics until after generations but that's my opinion.
It’s a shame what they did with knuckles I mean the sonic 2 movie made him a formidable foe again but made him bumbling again at the end

I mean realistic knuckles is psychically stronger but sonic has speed on his side which makes it hard for knuckles to keep up with
Without that speed sonic would be getting his ass handed to him a lot
Classic knuckles on the classic games was as fast as classic sonic, so I would say sonic could unsmart him, but knuckles could also do some blows on the hedgehog, and probably leave him weak. And well, classic sonic use to be weak after all, he was only fast, and classic knuckles was also fast, and strong, so I would say if we count the classic games as canon, then classic knuckles would win classic sonic in a fight. This is just my opinion, and you can disagree with it if you want.
Edit: Forgot so say this, both of the characters have the same speed, but they cant even catch up to a fucking fat egg dude that runs faster than them. So Robotnik would obviously win in a race with these 2 characters.
I wish The Ultimate Lifeform; Shadow the Hedgehog could get a better enemy/rival future Sonic Sonic the Hedgehog video games and comic books. Maybe a new female character as a swordfighter or something.
Hint: Just to try something different for Shadow. And to keep away from Sonic and his friends. I just don't want Shadow to be alone or neither an edge lord anymore.

Man watching this makes me want their rivalry to return, to me, that was the coolest thing about knuckles other than being a guardian, I just don't really see Sonic and knuckles as friends, I see them as equals, I mean knuckles doesn't really seem like a guy who has no time for Friends neither is sonic (tails is an exception) I like when their working together it's really cool, but their really at their best when they're at odds with each other, it make their relationship more three-dimensional.
Make both characters seem heroic in the opposite way, they're both loners trying to work together to stop a common enemy which I would love to see more, it's sad that they push knuckles to the side as a rival to push Shadow as a rival because to be honest shadow is way too far of being a rival of Sonic in my opinion.
We need to bring knuckles back as a rival and maybe even metal Sonic and stop pushing Shadow to be a rival for Sonic all the time because I never saw him that way. Metal Sonic is a dark mirror to Sonic, knuckles is a opposite.

Why does everyone keep using BOOM Knuckles as an accurate representation of Modern Knuckles? Like Modern definitely has some issues in my book with how he's characterized, but grouping his issues together with Boom's is like if you used Lego Batman as a reason Batman's character has degraded nowadays. Just seems disingenuous to me
Other than Forces, what other modern depictions do we have? After Heroes he pretty much disappeared in a playable sense apart from 06 and some handheld titles, so Boom and “Ugandan” Knuckles is what everyone thinks of now when the character is mentioned. But on a more practical level, I’m just using it to help get across the joke that Knuckles has become and how very wrong that is.
