16:10 - vampire squids are actually NOT squid! they're not octopus either though! they are their own unique type of creature :)
from the Monterey Bay Aquarium website: "Scientists named this animal Vampyroteuthis infernalis, which means “vampire squid from hell.” But this name is misleading - it’s not a squid at all! It sits alone in phylum Mollusca as the only living member of the family Vampyroteuthidae."

A few more notes about octopuses: they can regrow tentacles and each one moves completely irirrelevant to other ones...meaning it's like each one has its own mind...furthermore they "play" which is non existent in any other animal nearly related to them (it is seen in "clever" verterbrates like cats and dogs and dolphins) not only that they have MORE brain cells than cats which is huge because in the genetic tree they are just...odd nothing near them around them or before them is like this and their common progenitor with more clever beings is a freaking worm in the very first branches of evolution...they are absolutely amazing creatures

idea for a creature challenge: SCAVENGER! you can eat plants and/or meat (up to you!) but you are not allowed to hunt a creature or harvest fruit yourself. it has to be free-floating food pieces (cell stage) or a creature that was killed by another creature, or the fruit in creature stage that’s laying on the ground. basically if it’s not already dead then you can’t eat it!
i’m not sure how food works in tribal stage, but if scavenging would be very difficult or not even possible by then, we can say that once they’ve evolved that much then they have figured out hunting and gathering lmao.
you could design them like a vulture, but there’s lots of scavenger animals out there to find inspiration from! vultures are one of my favorite animals though so i think they would be cool, there’s also lots of beaks available in creature stage iirc?

Don't know if you've tried this, but would love to see a legless challenge (any difficulty). The rules would be as following:
    1. No speed parts in cell stage (flagellas, etc.)
    2. No legs in creature to tribal stage.
    3. No speed parts on your vehicles (meaning you have to have a 0 speed stat on your civ vehicles).
    4. And of course the theme of the creature would have to be slug or snail

Might want to do a few runs in spore to get use to the trait systems and basic survival. My suggestion would be an achievement run to learn the systems as it helps with the nuisances of the game. Though I'm fully aware of time limitations so just a few points to help you.
-In cell stage use the floating debris and water current 0s to outmaneuver large predators. You as a player should almost never die as with practice you can avoid most things.
-For more parts in creature stage target the alphas in every nest as the give a part. Farming parts is as easy as hunting or allying the aloha and returning at a later date when there is a new one.
-For slow builds sneak is your ally a good amount of stealth can help you survive the part rich areas held by epics.
-Look into asymmetrical limbs it's an easy thing to do that will really help in these design challenges.
Thanks for keeping our favorite childhood game alive

So, you were right in the long gestation idea. Also, gestation refers to the length of time an organism takes fron conception to birth. The term is not specific to mammalians. It is used for at least most if not all multicellular life.
In some species of octopus, the mother guards the nest and keeps oxygen rich water flowing over the eggs for up to a year. This is turn weakens the mother and she usually dies not long after the eggs hatch.
