      LOL! I'm a 70 year old retired maker/laser artist, who didn't know what a DAW was only a year ago. Since then, I've developed a laser imaging synth with a Teensy MCU and now customizing Reaper to control it via MIDI, Akai Mkii MIDI mixer, and 2 touch screens, one 10" desktop pad for master controls and a 2nd 15" touch monitor for Reaper's GUI.
      This video covers how to record the CC gain levels for my 17 waveform/image generators inside the laser synth. The Teensy MCU generates the digital signals and output them via multiplexed I2S to 6 DACs for XYRGB vector imagery.
      More down your alley. The unused output will be used to control the motor speed of an effects wheel, also via MIDI levels from Reaper's timeline. Just add an H-bridge to power the motor.
      Unused GPIO pins will also be used to control the intensities of RGB laser diodes to illuminate the effects wheel, via digital PWM.
      the laser diodes are 0-5VDC, perfect for an Arduino.
      "Our pal Dave" from the YT 'Notes and Volts' channel has an excellent DIY tutorial for the Teensy Synth & MIDI control. That's what enabled my project.
      Fun stuff, for sure. Hope this triggers your creative potential.
      Enjoy your projects. 😎

    so say we start mixing a song and do a nice balance for the tracks for the 1st chorus,, and afterwards select all those tracks for that chorus and put it in write mode or latch mode on the pans and volume, so they are all set for that section. Now... I put it in read so I don't lose that awesome chorus or change it by accident (like the dangerous write mode). Now... how are we going to use automation mode strategy to do the 1st verse before that chorus without losing that awesome chorus section? what's the best way. loop the 1st verse and put it in write mode and adjust all the faders and pans until an awesome mix for that 1st verse section is done and then click stop and put it in read mode? or use latch mode and then once happy click write mode for pans and volume, then click stop and put it in read mode?and then select write mode for all those tracks for pans and volume?
    >I wander what's best to use.
    done using
    But how about auditioning transitions (eg 1st verse to chorus1) , what if the jumps are too much that I guesstimated whilst I was looped on the chorus and then afterwards looped on verse 1?
    very interesting stuff! Bit of a brain workout though! lol
    ... or if careful to loop sections without clicking anywhere else, then I suppose keeping it in write mode is useful to get the chorus section sounding great for volume and pans on all tracks, then simply click stop and loop a different section before or after and just keeping it in write mode get a cool balance mix of volume and pans for that section section of the song, v1, then intro,,,, then the section after chorus1 intro2,, then v2, then skip ch2 because it was already set from ch1,, then do v3,, etc. -- hymn that sounds like a good strategy and im gonna try it!!! :)

    Thanks for this info. But I've having a huge problem editing previously recorded Expression/CC11 (and a few other parameters) in Latch mode. I used a VST's slider to record the envelope along with MIDI notes. I can edit the green curve by drawing with the pen in the MIDI Editor. But when I try to edit it during playback using the Reaper's Expression trim slider, it seems to fight the VST slider. Both will jitter, the purple curve will be a mess, and the MIDI Editor's green curve is unchanged. I'm a noob and there must be something about these envelopes and how they are controlled that I don't understand. I posted this in the Newbie section of the Reaper forum but no answers yet. Can you explain what's going on? Thanks!!!!

I am in latch preview mode. the parameter i wanna change is in red. my automation lane is record-enabled. i don't get it. is it a glitchy feature? Does it have known bugs? How do I map the envelope fader to a hardware surface fader?

    • @TheREAPERBlog
      @TheREAPERBlog  2 года назад +1

      If its a dedicated mixing controller the pan and volumes are automatically assigned.
      Another way is with MIDI learn. For volume, sends, and panning it can be done from the action list or ReaLearn plugin. For FX it is done in the plugin window.

      @@TheREAPERBlog Thank you very much for replying so quickly. Unfortunately, none of these solve my problem. I want to edit the volume envelope (like in "touch" mode) _without adding new points to the envelope curve._ Reaper _does_ control the envelope, but it keeps adding new points, regardless of whether I am in "touch" or "write" mode. I just want to adjust the volume *_level_* (plateau) for a given section between to predefined points (like, say, a verse or the chorus). I would be really grateful for any ideas about that. Because without it, I cannot use my control surface for the one thing I bought it for: riding the faders.

    • @TheREAPERBlog
      @TheREAPERBlog  2 года назад +1

      @@Noone-of-your-Business I've never seen anyone do it that way. New points are always added when you make a change in the write modes at the cursor position.
      Maybe move the main volume data to trim lane, then do another pass in latch-preview mode writing to selection. there's an action to merge and clear trim after.

    • @Noone-of-your-Business
      @Noone-of-your-Business 2 года назад

      @@TheREAPERBlog @The REAPER Blog That's not what I am looking for, but I appreciate your input. Being self taught, I frankly do not know the usual professional workflow, despite having watched countless videos. But riding the faders is not really anything that I approach as a live recording of a fader performance. To me, that just does not make much sense because there is far too much unwanted variation in that. I define an area that I want to adjust (say, the chorus) and move the volume for the entire section (which *_is_* possible in Reaper with the sub fader on the envelope strip!, it just does not react to the surface's faders) for the first pass. After that, I deal with individual notes or moments that need manual adjustment, and I do all of those graphically. This ensures that I do not have any unwanted dents in my envelopes.
      And I *_can_* (and do) do all this in Reaper with the mouse, but I was looking forward to riding the real faders much more comfortably and efficiently. Sadly, nobody seems to work like I do and thus, Reaper does not support the surface for my workflow. What a bummer. Hundreds of Euros for a console that does not help me mixing...
      Anyway, thank you for your help. I greatly appreciate it.

    • @TheREAPERBlog

    I saw that the video dates back to a few years ago. However I haven't found answers to my question in other videos, I try to propose my question here:
    How do you turn on/off an effect in reaper.
    Let me explain better: let's say that in a track I want to insert a reverb effect, but only in a certain point and then I want to turn off the effect: how to automate this effect?
    Or in a vst like Xpand 2 I want to turn on/off one of the four instruments, or in time change the parameters: how to obtain these automations?
    It's very simple in Cakewalk, but in Reaper it's still a mystery to me.
    Thanks to anyone who can give me some help.

      enable latch mode, set the cursor at the point you want to start the automation. Touch the control (envelope lane pops up, point added to lane at cursor)
      move cursor to next position, move parameter to next position.
      repeat as needed.

    Hi, is possible to automate ''take volume envelope'' with a midi controller, rather than riding it with the mouse?
    I've tried without succes many times, I can't find the way.
    I have a midi controller and usually use the Breath Wheel to automate some Volume or Pan ridings, but 'take volume envelope'' doesn't respond to any midi...it has to be done manually then?
    Thank you!

    • @TheREAPERBlog
      @TheREAPERBlog  5 лет назад

      That's a good question, I hadn't thought about that before. There is no MIDI learn or action to link take volume to a MIDI controller.
      One workaround could be to use a simple jsfx or vst plugin to control volume. fx parameters on items can be MIDI learned.
      Another option is a script, but you have to use the mouse at the same time, but it does work for any envelope point you put the mouse over. Pretty useful.
      Script: spk77_Adjust volume envelope point at mouse cursor via mousewheel.lua this script comes in ReaPack extension. (do you know Reapack? reapack.com )

    • @VeronicaGorositoMusic
      @VeronicaGorositoMusic 5 лет назад

      @@TheREAPERBlog Hey thank for your answer, and I'm sure it'll be for a better workflow if it could be midi controlled.
      Yes I know Reapack but I'm not a brain at this things :) Editing takes a long time to be mastered!
      Reaper is great but many times complicated, and this feature (take volume envelope) is great for pre-compressing vocals, preparing them for applying compression, and a pre de-esser also as a corrective tool for many problems, so useful!
      I've thought of slowing playback rate to do ''vocal riding'' carefully with a controller, then when it's done, back to normal playbak. But it seems to be it only applies for mouse moves...not midi.
      The action suggested throws me this advice ''...volume envelope point at mouse cursor via mousewheel.lua:1: unexpected symbol near '/'''...I don't have a clue on Actions, I use those who are simple and general.
      I'll keep attached to the mouse :)
