How to Setup Citra 3DS in Batocera

- This is a video tutorial that will teach you how to setup Citra (the 3DS emulator) in Batocera. Citra is a 3DS emulator.
This tutorial will also teach you how to decrypt encrypted 3DS files (discussed at 26:09 minutes within the video) along with help you to fix the "Fatal Error Encountered Mii Data" (discussed at 16:56 minutes within the video).

*** IMPORTANT ADDITION ********
To make the change permanent for the file "es_system.cfg" (discussed at time 30:06 minutes in the video), you need to add one more step.
1. Copy: "es_systems.cfg"
From: /usr/share/emulationstation
To: /userdata/system/configs/emulationstation
That will make the change permanent.

Thanks for the video really helped get things working. In my screen layout though large screen does now come up, I get top/bottom, left/right, Top only, Bottom only, Hybrid Top, and Hybrid bottom. I'll try some of these out and see what they are like. Update: Hybrid Top is Large screen mode.

On my Lenovo I found the Libretro core runs the games far better than stand alone citra. Citra runs them noticeably slower to the point I wouldnt play them.
However citra does run a few that the core doesnt.
Whu I dunno so for me Libretro citra core is better.
And as you showed to upscale the res you need to go into retroarch for that, for me almost games I tested run great at 2x res. Some almost at 3x but a little slow.
Anyway, 2x still looks great on a 24" 1080P monitor.
Also, in retroarch settings you can change screen layout as well, has multiple options.
Large screen small screen, one screen,single screen side by side etc.
If you pick large creen small screen you will see one large screen and it will also show both screens in small window, you can disable one as obviously you dont wanna duplicate the main screen.
Also, dont forget if doing that you also gotta go to batocera advanced system settings, set decoration to none and set game ratio to core provided or the pic will be stretched vertically.

Are Save States an option in Citra? I watched the video, but I might have missed a reference to that. I'm loving the channel, and it's been fun setting up each individual emulator.

I honestly don't know since originally it wasn't built for 2 players. If the original Windows Citra doesn't support it, then this won't either.

Do you know if it's possible to edit the hyrbid screen lay-out to make the second screen a little bigger?
Besides the screen layout settings found in the Citra standalone software or in Citra RetroArch (go to advanced settings by pressing Hot Key plus A button), you can't change the screen layout.

Hey, using batocera v37, citra was working just fine but now is not responding same thing with the app citra-emu-config, how can I fix it? Also retroarch core not saving stage even though on the website they it does! That's a fix for that?

Hey i have a problem with closing the emulator. The normal botacera hotkeys (home+select) dont work and if want to change it in citra hotkeys settings, it doesn't recognise the controller and let it only change by keyboard. Please Help thx.

Thanks for the videos. I uploaded a 3ds game but I am not getting the options under advanced settings to change to citra.. is there a reason why. Was there a bio or a step I missed?
Depending on what version of Batocera you are using Batocera only uses the Citra stand alone emu, no option for the LR core option for some time now.
And also dont forget this is for X86 64 chipsets.
Not sure about other systems like Pi etc.

I am loading up a 3DS Game onto Batacera. And It Automatically Crashes. Can you fix it, please? (It's the Emulator that Crashes) (Batacera in the May 2022 Version)
Try both the Libretro core and stand alone emulator options.
Do other 3DS games boot?
Perhaps that particular game just doesnt work.

Every time I mess with the configuration settings for citra in the citra application it always goes back to default and won’t keep the settings I put in
I think probably cause most game system settings changes are designed to be done in the ES advanced system setting.Not from the file manager/ app.
But when you change settings in the app does it revert as soon as you go to a game or does it work but only revert once you reboot?

Does anyone really manage to make Citra work stutterless on a steamdeck ? I am using Batocera
It does the same whenever I use maximum or minimum configuration... Tried on Mario Land and Link Between Worlds, this is not comfortable to play... These bigs lags are always at the very same moments in the game.. it is actually more stable in Resolution x4 this is nonsense

let's just say I am wanting to run Linux on my laptop that has an AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with AMD Radeon Vega 8 Igpu I am thinking that with Batocera that I could run Luigi's Mansion 2 Dark Moon
I believe it can work. If it runs in the Windows version of Citra, then it should work in Batocera.

I find libretro citra works better for Pokemon games. I am wondering how to change the layout to side by side. I have tried to enable that in retroarch options, but it does not work. Any idea how to make it work?
For some reason the libretro core runs better for me as well, for any game.
I also went into retroarch settings to change layout, for me it stuck.
Perhaps after you have selected your preferred layout, go back one step and look for save content directory override I think its called and select that.
You will see 3 options, save game override, core and directory.
How does Luigi’s Mansion 2 work for you? Any tips on getting this game to work?

Was a while ago when I tried it so dont remember what the issue was.. Wouldnt boot, stuck at title screen… not sure.. Probs one of those.

I notice you have Donkey Kong Country Returns - have you managed to get it working? I've tried a few different versions and I always just get a black screen.
Unfortunately, it's not working. I have the same issue: a black screen. I've saved it in my folder directory to have it ready when it does work.

I have Batocera.Linux V35 intel i5 16gb Ram, iGPU. somehow Citra standalone Emulator in batocera does not run games. If I run the game outside batocera (via f1) in Citra emulator, it runs very well. Libretro Citra for me is very laggy. Do you know that could happen?
My guess is that the Intel iGPU is an older generation with no newer drivers needed for Citra. I've tried Citra on several Intel chips (from 9th generation onward) and they have all worked.
Im using a 6th Gen i7 6700T with Intergrated graphics.
Stand alone Citra is working fine for me launching through ES but I find Libretro Citra is giving me better performance.
To upscale the Libretro Citra version you have to go into retroarch.
I find I can upscale mostly to 2x and get full speed with some dips, depending on game.
Using Citra stand alone even at 1x native its lower framerates.
It sucks that you have to have a expensive execrated gaming graphics card just to play games on a hand held Nintendo system, it's not like the 3-DSis a system with state of the art high rezolurion 3-D graphics that need a high performance 3-D Graphics accelerator chip.
My Samsung Laptop with builtin graphics (Mesa Intel HD Graphics 520 SLG2) can't handle most of the games I tried to run on it with all settings set to auto, only 3-D Space Harrier runs at full speed and it's just the Saturn Sega 32x version with the controls reversed, nothing 3-D about it.
My Laptop can run Sega Model3 and Naomi games at full speed ans those systems are way more advanced than the 3DS.
My Desktop is less powerful with buitin graphics that use part of the system memory for the graphics memory so 512k of RAM is reserved for the graphics taking that from the available system memory.
My Asrock Ryzen 4800u uses an integrated graphics card and it works well. It works well even on the Ryzen 4500U It also runs on the Iris Pro. It works better on the newer integrated graphics cards and not so much on the older ones.
How are you booting into full screen with a controller? It requires f11 key so a keyboard is needed. I get the window with bars top and bottom when it boots

sorry to keep bothering you but you are the only one who has helped me through my Batocera journey I tried the Batocera forum a month ago and never got an answer I love your videos they have helped a lot all my emulators are running great except for Citra my games are running slow and stuttering my PC has a Ryzen 5 6 core CPU clocked at 3.8 ghz with 16GB of DDR 4 and my GPU is a Radeon R7 240 with 2GB of RAM I have tried Mario Kart 7 and New Super Mario World 2 I tried a few other games but all run slow PS3 and PS2 and XBOX run great I am running Batocera 32 with the latest updates I was wondering id you had any thoughts on how I could get more speed out of Citra
1. Go to your standalone emulator in File Manager
2. Select Emulation
3. Select Graphics
4. Select the Enchancements Tab
5. Make sure Enable Linear Filtering is on
6. Play with the Internal Resolution settings. Start with 2×
7. Select the Advanced Tab
8. Make sure that everything is turned on.
Try it and let me know if it works.
@@BatoceraNation I tried that I tested with Mario Kart 7 the games starts out ok I can select my player and the track and it moved pretty quick but then when the race starts it counts down slow and everything moves slow from there
@@timford8436 If you have tried everything above and it still doesn't work, then it means that AMD 8-year-old mobile chip is not compatible with Citra. I remember how ETA Prime has repeatedly said that he's has had very little success with AMD chips when running Citra. I was under the same impression too. However, the newer AMD chips do work really well with Ctira. My 4500U and 4800U AMD Batocera units both work really well with Citra using the exact same settings that I mentioned above (and running the games at 4x resolution). At this point, it's not the settings, but the R7 240 is not compatible with Citra.
@@BatoceraNation this isn't a mobile it is a desktop PC that I built last year it is a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU I have a GPU card since the CPU is not a G series so I cannot use the onboard graphics. So Citra will not run well with this hardware ??
@@timford8436 It is a powerful CPU. The fact that everything else work means it is not a driver issue. Citra has been known not to work well with older AMD cards. I don't know why that's the case. The newer cards work well with Citra.

every so often, my 3ds games stop loading when I click on a game and gets stuck on the banner. I have to do this to fix it
I have to SSH into batocera and then:
Paste the following commands
"batocera-save-overlay stop" to stop emulation station
"rm -rf /userdata/system/configs/citra-emu" to remove citra files
"batocera-save-overlay start" to restart emulation station and it should be

You can't configure it in Controllers and Bluetooth settings from the main menu? What happens when you try?
@@BatoceraNation I tried from inside Citra under configuration controllers the home button option is greyed out
Oh I misunderstood you. If it is grayed out, then you can't configure it. But have you tried just your hotkey? Maybe it is configured to it? I can't remember.

Citra does not support Vulkan at the moment.

No. Pi 4 not powerful enough for Citra.

anyone know how to modify this file without having to do it every time? will not save for me. every restart it reverts back and cant play .cci files. no info anywhere on this lol
After you do it, do a "Batocera-save-overlay" command in Xterm. I showed how to do this in my last Sega Model 3 tutorial from a few weeks ago.

Dont forget whenever you update Batocera to the next version anything you edited that required the save overlay command in xterm setting you will probably have to do again.

I can't remember all the file extensions that work with Citra. But the video covers this information. Or you can read the info.txt inside the 3ds folder.
@Batocera Nation is there anyway to map the ps4 touchpad for use as the bottom screen
I honestly don't know since I don't own one. You should post your question in the official Batocera.org forums. Someone there should know.
