- Our new chickens have arrived! We've had an eventful week. New additions on the farm and the young chicks had a chance to meet the older hens! Who scared who?!

Are you getting more chicks this year? Let us know the breed and quantity. Also, let us know if you're having issues with Chicken Math!
I wish we could get more. Being in. the city we are limited to how many we can have and I might have pushed that a bit already 😊
@@LittleHomesteadOnHinerPond It's too bad they limit the number you can have. I love it that you've "pushed it" a bit! Have a great week!
I love the new baby chicks and seeing them with the other hens! I’m hoping to get Bresses this year but so far it’s been all about the garden here lol! 😂❤
@@MtnGrandma I have heard that the Bresses are very tasty birds. Keep us posted on how they turn out. Cheers Tammy!
Love the little chicks it is always interesting to see how the grown chickens react with the little ones. Thank you for sharing.
It's amazing how scared the Bigs can be around the chicks. I'm guessing they just don't know what they are. Thanks for stopping by to watch. Cheers Janice!
I got 10 girls last year and decided to get a rooster this spring for added protection as we have a lot of predators in the woods surrounding us. He was about 6 months old when he arrived and came with a companion to help him transition easier since he had to be quarantined at first. That gave us 12 total and the husband said I couldn't buy anymore chicks. Now it's 2 months later and I have a broody hen who I allowed to have 4 eggs (shh, don't tell the husband). Hoping for babies in 16 days! 🐣🐣🐣🐣
Ha! There is always a way to add more chickens! I hope hubby doesn't catch on too quick. Just tell him that the chickens did it, not you!!
Sweet. We have 10 coming tomorrow. 🐥
Awesome. What breed (or breeds) are you getting this year?
@@TheOldSwedesFarm we are getting 5 Buff Brahma and 5 Prairie Bluebell Egger. They checked all our boxes for climate and laying from the options available.
@@TheCowEmporium We've never had those two breeds. You've got an even more harsh climate than we do. I bet you're limited. I'll be watching your channel to see these two breeds. Cheers Annette!
Beautiful chicks
They really are. Thanks for stopping by to watch, Scott!
Chicks are always adorable.
They are. It is so much fun to watch them run around! They've already grown so much. Cheers Anne!
Sounds like my Tractor Supply. 😂
When I stopped at my Feed Store, to pick them up, it was REALLY loud with all the new chicks there. It's a fun time of year!!
I went to ours recently wanting to just get a couple chicks for my broody hen to raise. They only had 5 chicks. They require you to buy 4. I told them that I only needed 2 and said if I buy 4 then one will be all alone. They told me that they would throw that one in for free. So chicken math. Wanted 2 - came home with 5!
@@dogwalker5325 That is awesome! I always justify it by saying something like "Well, a few might die.." In my mind, that makes it OK for me to overbuy!! Cheers!
Baby chicks are so cute. Have you lost many adult hens. Are you downsizing this year. Garden and chickens?
We haven't lost any hens. We're going to use these to replace our older hens. We're just working in the garden and with the chickens to provide for our needs (and a small amount to share). Trying to keep it manageable this year. Cheers Tani!
We doubled our flock by getting 5 barred rocks and 5 re d sex links. We already have two roosters and I didn’t want to deal with getting another one instead of a hen, so went with two that are sexed right out of the egg. Also, I remembered your recommendations on these two, so went ahead and took the plunge! But I think the red sex link is a little different in that ours are getting black tail feathers instead of white like yours. They’re supposed to be good layers as well. Thanks! 😊🐓
You'll love the Rocks. So gentle! Are the Red Sex Links the same as a Golden Comet or an ISA Brown? I hadn't heard of the Red Sex Link. Tell me more!
It doesn't hurt to have a few extra. Thank you.
Can you ever have too many?! Cheers Bryce!
How fun. Our six are only a year old and I already want more. What months of the year have yours laid eggs the most?
To be honest, ours lay all year around. The ISA Browns lay 6-7 times a week. They are machines!
Chicken math made me chuckle! We added 10 to the flock this year. More when we are established on the new property. Babies are exciting!
Can't wait to see how everything turns out on your property. It'll be an exciting five years to get things in place! Cheers Jen!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm some days I feel to old to start over but we are making it happen! Cheers!
@@northerngirlhobbies You're still young. If I can build up a homestead, you can too!! Go for it girl!!
Congratulations!! You will love the Amercauna's Holly, they will give you pretty green/blue eggs!
Holly is already loving them! I'm still trying to find the differences between the Americauna and the Americana. Different hatcheries have different names for the same hen?! I'm sure Holly will love the blue eggs! Cheers!
Big girls are like, "Ok, which one of you girls hatched all of these"
I don't know what they were thinking. They just didn't like the noise AND they had to give up part of the barn to the Littles! Cheers Doug!
I have 20 Rhode Island Reds wonderful layers
You'll have lots to do this summer....and LOTS of eggs this fall! Thanks for stopping by!! Cheers!
My chics came a month ago. Of course, it was warmer here in Kentucky than where you're at. They're adolescent size now and in with my older chickens. I was concerned about the rooster bullying them, but he has become very protective. The older hens are the bullies.
Wow! You integrated quickly. I keep them separate until they are all on the layer feed. It's great that your rooster took a liking to them. That's a big help! Thanks for stopping by Nick!
Chicken math is definitely real! They’re so cute, how can you not get more??! 😍 We wound up with 22 new chicks this year (a variety of breeds), 4 baby bunnies and we’ll have 5 ducks at the end of the week. 😅 15 chicks was the original plan.
That's multiplication, not addition. You really know how to work the math!! Cheers!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm 😂
Congrats on the new chicks! Enjoy. Only meat bird chicks this year for us. I agree too dusty in the house and we won’t be doing that again. Will these be replacing the current flock?
I think we may sell the eight we have in the fall. We'll see. Worst case scenario, we keep them all and have 28 through the winter. We're right back into selling eggs...... Cheers Lisa!
