I bought a cake server at a resale shop, thinking it might be sterling. When I cleaned it up, the copper began to show through. I was only out $3. and still had a useful kitchen tool.
I would like to point out that the absence of stamps does not mean that it is automatically silverplate. It could just mean that it is of an age or period where stamping was not legally required. I have come across many an antique of sterling silver. Whether tea services, flatware services, etc etc. the lack of a stamp unless in regard to something that was made 20th and 21st centuries means nothing. I only pointed this out so that people who watch this video will not automatically be musleaded and get ripped off by Jewelers or pawnbrokers. There are chemical test that you can do an inconspicuous places before you take it to be seen by a so-called professional. I suggest looking them up and performing them in your own home.
I got two pots and magnets do not stick. There is a stamp of a little guy in shorts and a shield and some other random things around him. Do you know what this is? The outside has a bit of tarnish on both pots.
Please don't tell people that simply because it's not Sterling, it has "No value". I just sold a silver plate serving tray for $450 because it was an extremely rare pattern that apparently people are looking for. It may have no silver value but trust me, it can still have serious "collector" value.
Hi, im Jean here in philippines and i dont know how where to sell this arg800, i have spoon and pork here, and i dont know what im going to do this antiques.

One professional suggested finding a value of a comparable item at Macy's, or other retailer...donating the item, & get a receipt for that value, & writing it off as charitable giving on your taxes.
Not all say sterling or .925 . I've seen it with a lion and crowns , right now I have a tray that has some stamp of some type of bird with number 338 or 538 can't really make it out
The walking lion is an English marking for sterling. You may be able to find the markings on the Silver Encyclopedia on line. The lower silver you may find is 750 and that was very uncommon. 800 is the coin silver. 830 was the Scandinavian standard, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
I have one pot with a man in shorts and holding a shield and other random things stamped on the bottom. Do you know what a an with a shield stamp means?
Everything he said was correct. "925", ".925", "92.5%", "925 parts per thousand" and "Sterling Silver" (as well as a few other hallmarks like the lion passant/rampant etc.) is the exact same thing, just written differently. Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

So something like a Gorham tea set, is there a way to determine the value if we wanted to sell it ?
Charles Moore yes, what is the pattern? There should be a name or serial number by the hallmarks.
Should old silver flatware be cleaned before going to the buyer.?
