Thank you! James Covenant's "Make It So" is indeed a classic as well. And while DS9 is my forever fave, I've got a Voyager one that I may finish in time for the holidays this year too.
I love this so much. Regarding the Allamaraine segment: It's a terrible episode, but I always appreciated Nana Visitor's acting choice here. Nana Visitor is a trained singer and dancer (she got her start on Broadway). However, Major Kira likely didn't grow up with nursery rhymes being sung to her, so during the Allamaraine bit, she speaks her lines instead of singing them. That's some subtle acting right there, which is part of why this show is so amazing!
I think thats a good point. The character of Kira is sometimes misunderstood, but you have to remember that Kira was born towards the end of the occupation when the killings, the r**ps, the slavery and the brutality was at it's highest. She joined the resistance at a young age and has never known much of a safe environment that was conducive to childhood. Shes practical, resourceful and quite hypervigilant because she went through her formative years knowing only the occupation. In many ways she has PTSD and is a product of war-time, living and working in a peacetime environment...so it's not that she doesn't have an imagination, its that it was never encouraged or nurtured and therefore, she's developed much differently. Shes singing Allamaraine in a minotone and uninterested manner because to her, it's only a practical means to progress past that part of the maze. She has little time to savour or enjoy the present as a person. Her inner self emerges as the series progresses and she starts to incorporate a more self-loving personality and allows herself to enjoy lifes moments, especially when she and Odo open up to each other. Before that moment, she denies her feelings because she's never been truely allowed to explore herself sexually or romantically above how things like sex could be used against her enemeies as a tool or as a means to manipulate the Cardassians, and she will have grown uo seeing Bajoran women use their bodies and sexuality to pay for food, favours or for distraction in war time. She's quite a complex character without the writers (looking at Discovery) stating her identiy obviously. You see her through how she behaves, what she says or doesn't say. She also likes Cheif O'brien and respects him because the Chief fought Cardassians, he is a practical person who does whats needed and speaks his mind. She respects those qualities, but at the same time, she forms a close friendship with Dax, a young character who is quite carefree, hughly educated, indulgent, sexually non-oppressed and Kira learns about what it can mean to be a woman above being a practical and pragmatic rebel fighter that she would've seen as role models growing up. Hence why she's resistant to authority, Starfleet, relaxing etc...
And if I had to listen to it all over again, I would. Santa was right about one thing. A good Christmas is a small price to pay for the safety of the Alpha Quadrant, so I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it.
1:00-1:11 Considering how much the cast hated that episode, the reactions of O'Brien, Garak, Worf & Morn are probably genuine! *Also the Bashir behind Sisko was the changeling*
