Playing a SCALLOPED Neck for the FIRST TIME! Yngwie's Fender Stratocaster (2018)

  • UPDATE! I fixed (for the most part) the slipping high E string. See pinned comment.
I just received Yngwie Malmsteen's Fender Stratocaster with scalloped frets this morning. Before recording this video, the only thing I did with it was tune it to D# -- I purposely avoided fretting any notes, so that you could see my raw reaction while recording. Here are some spoilers about what I found:
    The GOOD:
    1. The scalloped frets posed absolutely 0 difficulty for me in terms of rhythm and chords. This is a common concern for many players, but I was very surprised. I'm not sure what string gauge these came shipped with from sweetwater (I assume 9's), but the string tension was strong enough to where I didn't push any notes flat.
    2. It sounds awesome, as you would expect. I played it going through a Kemper profile with some YJM profiles.
    3. The neck feels great. I was worried about the scalloped frets hurting my fretting hand (near the high E) as I slide up the neck, but that wasn't an issue at all.
    The BAD:
    1. The high E string of death. In the video, you'll see I struggle with it slipping off the neck if I did any sort of pull-offs. I've since researched this, and there's a few fixes, such as installing a different bridge. I'll report back with what I decide to do.

I absolutely love shredding on it. Takes a minute or two for my SRV strat to feel normal again after playing it, but no big deal, it's just like painting with different brushes. I built my own scalloped years ago with an unfinished neck. Deep scallop with Jumbo frets. I bought that YJM strat last year and played it once. Not that playing scalloped was hard, since I took the time to get comfortable with the scalloped.
The YJM is so over coated in laquear I can barely get up and down the neck because my hand sticks against the neck. I've yet to try lemon pledge. If that doesn't work, I have to sand the neck.
I have a Dime Dean, Shecter Hellraiser both with laqueared necks and they don't have that problem for me.

UPDATE! I fixed (for the most part) the slipping high E string. Here's how:
    1. Detune strings, so that there is hardly any tension on the neck.
    2. Quarter turn each neck screw on the back starting from the top up top and then bottom. Do this again for each screw.
    3. Adjust the neck (having someone help tighten the screws) so that the low E has more room on the fretboard.
Worked pretty well! I'm not slipping anywhere near as much. I'm still doing it, but by about 70% less. I just need to adjust my playing to accommodate for it.

Hello Slant. I have three Fender YJM Strats. A 2005, a 2006, and a 2008. They all initially suffered from the dreaded High "E" being too close to the edge of fretboard, and slipping off. I have come up with three different fixes...each work perfectly...although one may not be as aesthetically "pleasing" as the others. But I am all about functionality, and couldn't really give a toss about perfect aesthetics.
Fix #1) Replace the two outer string saddles (Low "E" and High "E") with vintage narrow block saddles (2-1/16" string spacing) available from Graphtech. These are their String Saver Classics, model #PG-8000-00 : STRING SAVER STRAT & TELE STYLE SADDLES - BRUSHED STEEL. Then, take a very thin self-locking electrical cable tie, and loop it underneath all the saddles (just behind the saddle height adjustment screws) and then up, over and around the top of the saddles. Thread the end through the self-locking ratchet case, then pull and ratchet the cable tie as tight as possible, while positioning the ratchet case so that it ends up on the right side edge (high "E" side) of the tremolo. Cut the leftover end of the tie so that it is flush with the ratchet case. This will compress the thinner, high "E" saddle, as well as low "E" saddle, up against the inner string saddles, and move the high "E" string inwards off the edge of fretboard. Works like a charm, but again, you have to be cool with the look of the two different saddles as well as the cable tie. Personally, I think it looks just fine, and is pretty innocuous.
      -----------------
Fix #2) Switch out / replace entire tremolo with a Fender USA Highway ONE tremolo...which has the narrow 2-1/16th string spacing, but has the vintage spacing on the six tremolo screws. It is a one-to-one retrofit, and drops right into the YJM Strat.
      -----------------
Fix #3) Switch out / replace entire tremolo with a Callaham V/N (Vintage Narrow) tremolo. Same concept as the Fender USA Highway One tremolo.
      -----------------
Just as a final note...I first tried the method you mentioned, whereby you loosen the neck screws and adjust the neck in the pocket. While this did help somewhat, IMHO it didn't move the offending high "E" string inward enough -- it still remained too close to the edge for my comfort.
By the way, this has been a problem with all Fender strats that use a more modern neck profile with the wider "vintage" tremolo. They still haven't corrected the issue after 2 decades.

@@Deuterium2H Man this is was a design choice based on of his personal Strats they used to clone the prototype neck. I've been using a sig YJM for over a year now, I experience no slippage even though it's tight, it becomes a feature after you get used to it.
This kind of thing isn't supposed to be comfortable at this level of playing. just put in the hours, and you'll be better for it.
It's the longest running signature Strat for a reason, that neck is pure gold.

I "borrowed" a used Yngwie from Guit Center for a month and I *really* liked the scalloped frets. It made bar chords effortless and generally the effort needed to play it was *way less* than my Les Paul. Due to the mismatch between the narrow neck on the Yngwie and my tuba player's fingers . . . I took it back and got my Les Paul scalloped. This led to me getting my Tele and my Larrivee scalloped. Nuff Sed.

    Hello Gary,
for me as a huge Yngwie fan I thought it is a must have to own that signature guitar.
Unfortunately I had great problems not to bend the tone out of pitch when playing chords or single tones.
And I also didn't made it with the High E-String which is dangerously near on the edge of the fretwire.
The String would slip off the frets so often, which was very disappointing and also demotivating.
In the end I had to send the guitar back and bought instead of it a Fender AM pro Strat and then I changed the pickups with the YJM signature pickups. Since than I'm happy because I found over this way the best solution for me.
And thank you so much for sharing your experiences on this video!
    With greetings from Germany
    Matthias

I've played scalloped necks for a long time and prefer the Blackmore style where it's more gradual as you go up the board. There isn't any advantage to scallops in the first 3 or 4 frets so leave those with only a slight scoop then very gradually make them deeper as you go up the neck but never more than a small bit at a time.

I was lucky enough to try out the Malmsteen. It was a nice experience. But I was somehow dissapointed to see that the scalloped fretboard didn't make such a big difference. I guess if you are used to vintage guitars with small frets, then it will definitely feel weird at first. But if you are already used to bigger frets that my MH-1000 has as well as my Yamaha that I refretted with Dunlop 6000, you are actually used to play without touching the wood of the fretboard. Since then, it doesn't really matters whereras your fingers are 1 ou 5 millimeters away from the fretboard : It won't make a huge difference in the end.
