- The Steamship Shieldhall is Britain's largest working steamship. This video introduces her, from her build and working life in the Clyde to her present active retirement based in Southampton.
She has a full program of summer excursions and as an events venue throughout the year, maintained and operated entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers.
This video shows her full story from the very beginning.
You too are welcome to come aboard and say "We are Shieldhall".

I retired being an electrician/operating engineer for a hospital. Our physical plant had a battery of four Waukesha scotch marine fire tube boilers, 150 btu horsepower each. We would run the boilers at about 55 PSI of non superheated steam. I loved working as a high voltage electrician but I particularly enjoyed managing those boilers. That career field served me well through the years. I really miss that job!
I'm glad the Shieldhall is still sailing l was on it twice, once when it worked with sooage taking it to Garroch head then as a pleasure boat, it came up from England & spent a few days on the Clyde & l had a great sail on her with others, also it was a sunny day.
Amazing Work!!!! Long Life to Shieldhall and crew!!!!
I was given a guided tour of the ship about 20years ago. I was in Weymouth on a day trip with my coach, I spotted her and went for a look. The friendly volunteers invited me on board, I was wearing my uniform, maybe that helped!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and met a few of my passengers on board too.
Myself and my passengers were from the West of Scotland so knew about the SS Sheildhall and it's former use.
Maybe one day I will get a sail aboard this wonderful ship.
Titanic engine cylinder engineering room
Did a sail on Waverley which took us through the sludge off Garroch Head. I felt a bit sick from the smell ! The Shieldhall was replaced by the Dalmuir at that time. I think the dumping of sludge was banned in the late 70s.
Wonderful to see an old lady still running. I hope to sail on her one day.
Great experience, you won’t regret it!
Well done everyone! I'm a Master Mariner and would love to help clean the boiler, sweep the accomodation as much as have the conn going alongside. Lucky you if you live close!
Crawling into the boiler tubes reminded me of 6months I spent in Boiler Room #2 on the USS TICONDEROGA which was fired by black oil. When ever we were in Port for a few months as a Fireman we had to crawl inside the fire box to scrape the tubes. I was assigned temporarily to the boiler room because they had a shortage of personal I was a Photographers Mate by my training but at the time I was the new guy in the photo lab so I did what I was ordered no regrets I was young. I have suffered from breathing issues since the. The TICONDEROGA was an Essex class carrier of which 24 were built in WW2. I served on board up until decommissioning in 1973. I was also the last Photographer on board and photographed the Decommissioning Ceremony. By the way the TICONDEROGA had 8 boilers in 4 boiler rooms and General electric Steam Turbines with a published speed of 36knots which is very fast. Proud to have served. I no the attachment one gets after serving on such magnificent ships.
Love the fact that she was sailing next to either Cunard’s Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth closer towards the end of the video
Queen Elizabeth
The picture you showed in this video of the ships construction was the RMS Aquitania
And a well done to all the crew, fantastic job! I only wish such a project would be possible here in the States.
You prolly dont care at all but does anyone know of a way to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid forgot my account password. I would love any tips you can give me!
@Kashton Ray Instablaster :)
A beautiful Clydebuilt ship!
What a lovely machine! Triple expansion engines! Yes, like the Titanic, but she had two triple expansion reciprocating engines for ahead and a high pressure turbine driving the centre line prop for astern motion and maximum ahead speed. Shieldhall is really beautiful and so odd to have modern equipment we take for granted, yet old fashioned oil fired boilers to make steam. Well done to all of Shieldhall's membership and crew.
Kind of wish this ship was here in the states, would be nice to visit!! Excellent work folks
This brings back many happy memories, including trips around the Isle of Wight, down to Falmouth and into Dartmouth and Weymouth or up to Glasgow under my Blue Ensign.
I had a great trip on this ship just prior to decommissioning. It was spotless.
She is still operational
Decommissioning as a sludge ship is surely the meaning ?
I didn't know these ship existed! Good it see it does.
You have something here . Anytime finding someone or something satisfying your requirements so well , taking care of something so dear to all of us . So much thanks
Maravilloso buque de vapor.
One day I will visit you guys, cause this is awesome.
Im on the poopdeck of a sewage ship!
I am very impressed with the crew and the ship and I am volunteering to join up, I am looking forward to helping out.

We have an even older steam ship still working here in New Zealand. S.S. Earnslaw. Look her up if you are interested.
Being a strictly lake boat, it suffers much less corrosion. A bit like some of the Great Lakes freighters, which can go a century or more (with mechanical refits).
1:08 I like the Captain’s old, faded epaulettes, they show that he’s being doing it for awhile.
Wait wait wait. If I'm getting this right, they decided to make a colossal sized honeydipper their flagship of British maritime heritage?
their last 2 great ocean liners ended up in america and then one sunk so what choice did they have???
I used to see this going up and down the Clyde all the time when I was a youngster in Erskine.
She is a beauty.
Well done !!!
beautiful ships ❤
Remembering our dear friend Paul who loved this ship.
Remember her sailing up and down the Clyde. Happy days
I served my apprenticeship in Barclay Curles & Co, Drydock. The Shieldhall came in for service around 1956o 57.and I worked in the sewage tanks. Redeleaded and immaculate. I always thought it and its sister ship Dalmarnock were called banana boats bcause of the cargo of turds?
I remember these ships running out of the Thames in the ‘60s - generally known by other mariners calling them “Bovril” boats
Boy watching that bloke crawl into a boiler took me right back to my RCN ERA apprenticeship days of crawling into the muddrum of a Babcock Wilcox boiler on a DDE. Pleasant times they were NOT! They are correct in describing a steamship as a living thing, sorta like a cantankerous grandpa, keep him clean and in fresh chewing baccy and he's your best friend, neglect him and suddenly the Weirs pump fails and you have to help him to the loo to get rid of a surplus of condensate.
Great ship
Hello Bernie, Thank you for your kind words. If you wish to become a volunteer please email volunteering@ss-shieldhall.co.uk. We look forward to seeing you soon! Lewis
The Lagan does the best version of ss shieldhall , Arthur johnstone really does it justice
nice!
Good for them for saving the ship from the breakers yard
Oh man, I'd love to volunteer but sadly I live in the United States.
In my time with Trinity House, I was in the Ready and Vestal among otheres. Seeing the boiler room and Engine rooms took me right back.
Love to volunteer but too far away.
I love the sae as it is in my blood through my mothers side of the Family Grand father and one of her brothers were sea men on ships One was a destroyer and the other ship was the sister ship of the Titanic i.e. the Olympic
Pull the chain and we'll answer your call!
I see the Cunard line queen Elizabeth
yes i see Queen elizabeth
Great movie, I sub your channel, cheers Fabrizio
The cool the thing is it has the old funnel in 20th century
Is the boiler of the ship fired with coal or diesel oil? Thx
Oil fired, you can see them lighting it with a burning rag on the end of a long steel rod, poking it through the peephole to ignite the oil burner jet.
I like very much
Even though it's from the UK, it's really a Cleveland Steamer.
Suggested origin of the word 'steaming drunk', some spending a day on a Clyde steamer and having too much to drink.
The ship is painted in the same colors of the White Star liners
I think they did it as a tribute to White star. Was grey for years.
I'm surprised for her day, the square looking ventilators, can anyone elaborate on this please?
Wow
Smart to use natural source to make engine
Bonnie wee beastie...

The EU doesn't like this method of disposal.
The S.S. Turdhall! Beware of the brown water don't swim in it!
Now this stage is skipped, raw sewage is pumped straight into the sea.

What a shitty History !
Shieldhall if said wrong could be interpreted as shit haul. That being said, If I lived across the pond I'd love to be a volunteer on her.
More like SS Shithall.. 😂😂

What a lovely past... Anyone wanna take a "dip"?
