I was in 3rd grade around 1993.. About 10 years ago I talked with my teacher she said "they have taken the fun out of teaching".... That was 10 years ago I can't imagine now what she would say if she wasn't retired. Bless teachers and all they do

Louisiana reight before the pandemic after 22 years of hell!.........I was burned out 15 years ago...........but I now have a lifetime pension baby! However I would recommend never to enter this "profession" today... You won't make it anywhere near minimum pension (20 years in LA) with the added BS....it was impossible before....

This is not acceptable.. thank God my 6th grade teacher had me read many books that may end up on the banned booklist. I'm only 61 now and fully appreciate the well rounded education he tried to give me! I can't imagine what it's like for teachers these days and the young ones who are growing up in these times 😞
Fortunately my son is graduating this year, and the private school we were lucky enough to have him in provided him with an honest and well rounded education. I would be terrified and furious if he were younger and still had years to go under these new laws.
He was taught the truth, both good and bad, about our nation's history. He learned the truth about slavery and the civil rights movement, and even though we're white he didn't feel guilty for the atrocities that many white people in the past committed. Instead, it exposed him to the struggles and horrors that some people face solely because of the color of their skin. It taught him to have empathy for others and to recognize that some people in our world have to endure struggles that may be far worse than those that others face.
Failing to teach our children about the good and bad in humankind's history will only ensure that they fail to see the warning signs that their current society is on the verge of making the same mistakes that were made in the past.
Just like the failures to teach about Stalin's rise to power, by teachers of the past few decades, has caused so many of our current citizens to fail to recognize the growing fascist threats taking hold in our country now. The widespread use of lies and propaganda by Trump and Fox "News", their successful attempts to divide us and pit us against each other, the book bannings and burnings, the villification of scientists and education, are all the same tactics Stalin used as well.

He shouldn't. Do you have family that lived in Africa that captured the slaves? Do you have family that purchased these slaves? Was he taught that just under 400,000 slaves were brought to what we now call the USA and the odds of someone in your family are slim to none that they owned a slave? I don't feel one ounce of guilt over slavery. All of my family came here after the 1900's started and long after slavery was abolished. If a "white guy" goes and kills 10 people, would you feel guilt just because you share the same skin color? Of course you wouldn't feel guilty........

I'm a teacher in Europe and I've been following the news about education in some states in the US in disbelief and with horror. The book bans... and now these restrictions... it's really scary. I can't imagine having to teach in a situation like that.

On this teacher's point (and I'm very glad I had a few -- even conservative Republicans, at times -- with such commitment to presenting the facts), I think Fontenelle put it very well: "Such is our condition that we are not permitted to arrive all at once at something reasonable no matter what it is. Before that it is necessary that we go astray for a long time, that we pass by all sorts of errors and degrees of impertinence." Or, as Santayana so succinctly said: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it".
As for the people proposing such legislation, Santayana also had something quite appropriate to say: "Fanaticism consists in redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim".
You obviously had some good teachers who inspired your learning. 🙂

I'm republican. I've read 1984, Farenheit 451, Animal Farm, Tolstoy, Ishiguro, Dickens, Dante, Nabokov, Virgil, Twain, Poe, Elliott, etc. I fully support removing age-inappropriate books that contain graphic sexual content or racial pseudoscience from public school libraries.
When all teachers quit, what will they do, then? They may have to raise their own children!

Well then, Credential Up Parents. There is way more to our profession than teaching factual history, but you go right ahead! So… 33 kids, 6.5 hours a day, teach ALL content areas, and handle each and every problem/ situation that comes up… constantly and continually. What other profession do any of you know where the professional is 33:1???? Hmmmm? Credential Up!!
But, talking numbers, in my state the school year is 180 days. At 6.5 hours a day the time spent teaching is 13.36% of their time in a year. Just have no sympathy for someone whining when they have a job with a livable wage and excellent benefits…and has 86.64% of their life available for their own leisure.

I work after work, I work during vacations, I work over the summer... our 'leisure time' is used on planning lessons that will hold up to state standards, eaten up by classes to keep our licenses, calling parents and grading. The idea that we have free time is a fallacy and if you had any actual knowledge of the educational system you would know that!!!

American teachers should go to other countries. They get paid better and students, parents will treat them with respect. Countries won't persecute them.

Etiquette #1 - there should be unlimited academic freedom (stop controlling teachers, telling them what to say or not to say! that's rude, disrespectful and repressive) - limit your nihilistic/ authoritarian attitudes to political spheres and leave the academia alone!

I’m a para-pro in a sped room and usually in February, we teach little stories about black history. The month is half over and not one story has been taught. I guess that’s how you do it.

Teaching accurate history of your own country is NOT teaching 'hate'. You underestimate the critical thinking skills of children because you clearly don't have any yourself.
White people alive now are not responsible for slavery and therefore shouldn't be blamed for it...but if they're engaged in a cover-up and are manipulating the minds of a younger generation like some fascist country, they absolutely ARE to blame for that, and that's despicable. If they do this, they're contributing to racial division instead of racial unity and harmony for the future, and disregarding the experiences, trauma and feelings of a quarter of the country. So public libraries no longer exist? Do parents not teach their children to go to the library, at a young age, anymore? As a child, I always read books that were deemed inappropriate for children. I checked them out myself, at our local public library. My parents had to sign a waiver, so I could borrow any book, regardless of subject matter. I did the same for my daughters. Is it really so impossible for parents to get a book, the school deems inappropriate, into their child's hands?

As parents we want to be involved in our children's education. My daughter, for example, had read all the books required for JR'S & SR's. We spoke with her teacher who then gave her Freshman College books. Sometimes we just need to speak to the teacher.

I understand your desire to leave certain periods of our country’s founding in the past. Unfortunately, the consequences of policies from the past are still felt to this day. You may not feel those consequences, but many others do. The only desire from these educators is to educate. Things like redlining, legal discrimination, wealth disparities, etc. Yes, there were some corrections made. However, more changes need to occur. At this point, it isn’t just minorities being affected by this system; you might want to learn it for yourself and your future.

I can't disagree with anything she said, but now that we've been through trump and his base, now that we've seen the extremes on the left, I am of the belief that if I still had kids in school, I would have had a whole lot of trouble trusting that a teacher would teach facts. We now know that there are many alternative versions of facts and that there are a lot of teachers who have no trouble letting their biases flavor things they say.
Then I suggest you go spend some time in an actual classroom, read the required text books, look at the questions on a test to see exactly what students are being taught. Believe me, it does not benefit teachers to not teach facts. Of course they are bad teachers, like in every profession.
