I am68 years old , I had Bariatric surgery April 1st , I have lost 155 pounds. I eat low carb and I run 18 miles a week on a under water treadmill , I use the patch aid vitamins for RNY bypass . I have to watch my portions and carbs. I found some noddles made with yellow peas . High protein and low carb . But we only have them every once great and a while. I am in the best condition of my life. I was pre diabetic. But not now. I was a size 24now I an a size 16 . I have only 60 more pounds to go for my personal goal. I will eat this way the rest of my life and will never go back to the way I was. This is my life changer.

Well in the Uk a fasting blood is expected to be around the 5.0 which is a 31, once you’ve eaten a meal it says on google, 2 hours after your meal it ok to have risen to between 7 to 9, 7 =43 and 9 = 56, I notice we measure blood sugar a bit differently over here in the UK. Your only pre diabetic at 6.8 or 42 here. I have a blood glucose monitor and up to 6.7= 41 is classed as ok. The nurse said on Friday that your truly diabetic at 7.8 = 48 hope that helps.

I was diagnosed with type 2 towards the end of July. I wasn’t a person who looked at labels. I never measured portions out. I also never got enough sleep. Like I would sleep anywhere between 3-5 a night. Once I got that news I made drastic changes to my lifestyle, changes that are talked about in this video. Since monitoring my blood sugar levels I haven’t had a single high reading, and in 2 months and 1 meek I have lost 27 lbs. Your videos randomly showed up in my recommended list this morning. You have gained a subscriber. Thank you for making these videos and educating those of us dealing with this disease how to best manage it, without the $30 copay to sit in a diabetic nutrition class. @@jah_jah_mikes4858 absolutely!
I have cut out all added sugar from my diet, for most days. I do allow myself a very occasional treat. I keep my carbs to 30 or less for meals. I don’t snack. I only have a small high fiber snack, usually a nut like almonds or pistachios, or unsalted sunflower seeds, before bed, if my blood sugar is in the 80s, to prevent it from going too low over night. I drink water for the most part. My only non water beverages are coffee in the morning with just a little milk, no sugar. I can’t do full on black coffee. Most nights before bed I have a hot lemon ginger tea no sugar, no milk.
At first I was just concentrating on my calories ( I keep my calories between 900 and 1,200) and carbs. I noticed that my everyday breakfast, a Jimmy Dean Delights, while low in calories and carbs, had quite a bit of sodium so I stopped eating that and I have one egg, sometimes 2, and two pieces of high fiber wheat toast. That way I can control the amount of sodium.
My lunch is usually fresh fruit(usually mellon like cantaloupe and berries)and greens(usually baby spinach), some type of protein usually an Icelandic Provisions yogurt, or cottage cheese, sometimes it’s some leftover chicken or some tuna and some unsalted nuts or sunflower seeds.
My dinner is the most diverse in my diet. I have a balance of protein, vegetables and some carbs. I measured everything at first. Now that I’ve been at it for half a year I can pretty much eyeball the portion size.
I have brought my A1C down from 7.9 in late July to 6.2 when I had it checked in late October. I’m am now down 43 lbs from my starting weight. My biggest weak area is getting that exercise in. I could give myself the excuse of I’m a super busy mom of 4, but the plain truth is I hate exercising. That’s something I’m going to be working on this year. My ultimate goal is to lose 200lbs. I broke that down into smaller goals of 50lbs. I’m just 7 lbs away from that first 50lb goal.
I’m not doing Keto, or the OMAD fad. I’m not doing anything like weight watchers, or any other overly restrictive diet. I’m just making those sustainable changes to my typical daily diet. I’m not knocking those diets, I just feel that those type of diets are not sustainable and they don’t actually teach you healthy eating, they are just severely restrictive and the moment you go off those kind of diets you start regaining weight. They’re great tools for fast weight loss but typically that lost weight comes back, with friends.
I did a lot of research into what fruits and vegetables where best for diabetics and what carbs to avoid that is what I stick to, for the most part. If I really, really want pasta I’ll have it, I’ll just be very strict with myself and measure out a half portion and have a bigger portion of protein and low carb veggies to balance it. It’s all about making sustainable healthy changes that are permanent lifestyle changes not temporary restrictions.
The biggest revelation for me was that when I added more nutrient rich foods to my diet I didn’t really have cravings for the unhealthy things. It truly hasn’t been difficult for me to stick to my changes because I’m not overly restrictive. The only thing I’m super restrictive about is sugar of course. With that said, at Christmas dinner I allowed myself to have a very small piece of my cousin’s homemade cheesecake.
I wish you a lot of luck on your journey! 🙂

@@jah_jah_mikes4858 no problem at all! Lol, sorry I get very wordy. 😂 It took just 3 months to go from an A1C of 7.9 down to 6.2. Yes to the prescription, I’m taking Metformin, the lowest dose, twice a day. I’m going to be calling my Dr tomorrow actually to see if I should reduce it. I definitely was lucky enough to catch it early, before my A1C reached dangerous levels. As far as I know the 7.9 is the highest my A1C ever was. No I didn’t have symptoms.
Getting this diagnosis definitely knocked me back. It’s a lot to take in for sure. I did attend a virtual educational class for diabetic nutrition. That was very helpful. I’m a little OCD so I did become obsessed the first few months, after my diagnosis, with researching diabetic nutrition. What helps lower your A1C, what helps keep your blood sugar levels in the normal range, etc. There’s definitely a lot of trial and error in what foods cause spikes and what foods don’t for you. For example, my dad can eat protein granola bars for a snack if he needs or wants and it doesn’t cause a spike for him, but for me they do. A pancake with berries is terrible for me, yet a Belgian waffle with berries is fine. Please feel free to ask me anything, if I can help I definitely will.

I was an over-the-road driver from 1991 to 2018 when I was medically retired. Most so-called diet plans are mainly impossible for over-the-road drivers. I was diagnosed as a Type 2 in 2005 after failing my Department of Transportation physical with a blood glucose of 223mg/dL. A blood glucose of 146mg/dL is the maximum allowed. The doctor who diagnosed me with the gave me four prescriptions, a one page pamphlet for information and a told me to buy a glucose meter. That's it. I ended up having to learn everything else on my own. I had to figure out how to eat healthier and geet exercise while on the road. Since I mostly drove at night the exercise part was rather easy. When I parked for my break I went walking. Earbuds in, music on and off I went. There were even times I awoke with the urge to go walking. The first time that happened I didn't know it was 14°F outside until I got back to the truck. Walking along with a change of diet I was able to take my weight from 250 pounds to 210. And then down to 180. I went down to 180 pounds in 2013 while recovering from a heart attack and bypass surgery. One thing I learned how was in the transportation industry there are a lot of drivers who get afflicted with Type 2 Diabetes. I was fortunate to when I was diagnosed to be driving for a that had a good understanding of of it and what drivers go through. The last company I drove for was not the same way. Finding healthy foods to eat probably was my biggest challenge while on the road as very few truckstop restaurants menus were geared to healthy foods. Most places have microwave ovens and when I went back to work after being diagnosed I was given a truck that had a refrigerator in it. This meant that I could keep healthy foods in the truck without them spoiling. I always try to pass on what I've learned to fellow drivers because I know getting much needed information can be a chore.
The doctor who diagnosed me also said that unloading a 53 feet long trailer is not good exercise but he couldn't explain why I was always hot, tired, thirsty and dirty afterwards. He even declined my challenge to come me unload the next time I delivered to the Kroger warehouse just under 30 minutes from his office. Before I had my heart attack I was off my Diabetes pills. After surgery I was put on insulin and then back on pills.

I only do about 15-17 minutes of exercise currently. I also suffer from anxiety and depression which I'm on medication for and see a therapist and psychiatrist for. Eventually I will add another 10 minutes on my treadmill when my body and mind are ready.

This is a wondeful video with excellent advice. I think a similar summary was the first video of yours that popped up in my YT feed. It jas helped me tremendously; I was very lax about bg testing - as you state in this video I was testing in the morning, not after meals, 2 hr after meals, and checking before and after dinner, alternating my testing time in addition to AM fasting bg. You woke me up and I have binge watched your videos ever since. My bg is much more even now on a mediterranean diet and following your diet recommendations. Thank you for impacting my life and for providing this dependable information for free, available to anyone. God Bless you.

What’s happening with my 72 year old body? I am eating a low to almost no carbs diet I am steadily losing weight and it’s becoming frightening. I am currently on Metformin 750mg ER daily and Januvia 100mg, exercise of walking was my favorite exercise but now I am having trouble with my right leg that causes pain after a 15 minute walk. What do you think is occurring? My blood sugar dropped on the low carb diet from 7.4 to 6.3, but is currently 7.8 and this really has me upset. Please respond at your convenience.
