I remember in 94 Intel came out with Pentium OverDrive. A chip that would fit on 486 motherboards replacing my DX2-66. I was so pumped to get it. I drove 4 hours round trip to Chicago to get it, dropped it in the Packard Bell mobo and got no boot. Called the support to find out that only Packard Bell needed special adaptor to run it. I ordered, waited 2 weeks, drove another 4 hrs and when I got it, I realized it was just a spacer bypassing one corner pin. Why didn't the tech support tell me to just cut one pin off. Anyways, got it running but found it only 25% faster. My Navy Fighters sim was still slow AF. That was before Internet where you could look things up.

25% back then could still make a big difference, depending on the application. On an XT-class machine, the 2MHz difference between an 8088-1 (10MHz) and an 8088-2 (8MHz) would determine whether or not Windows 3.0 was usable, or if you just didn't bother! Either way, with an Overdrive chip, you're still limited by the board's bus and RAM speed.

@@BlackEpyon I know 25% is a nice boost but hardly made a difference. U.S. Navy Fighters was first flight sim using textures which made a gameplay a slideshow at 10fps. I was hoping that a Pentium processor with floating-point architecture would double the frame rate. It didn't. All that driving to the stores, the excitement, then depression. Good times.

Usually boards with built in controllers etc... are called 486 AIO (All In One) for example ECS UM486V AIO is a 486 board with built in controller

While it's not unusual to find re-badged chips coming from China these days, I'm not sure why they'd do it for new stock, as it would be flagged in quality control. Something I'd check is to make sure the jumpers on the motherboard are correctly set for the type of cache that's installed, and if that's not the issue, try swapping chips that you know are good.

I kept being given 19" CRTs in the early aughts because everybody was upgrading to LCDs.

Even with how disorganized this seemed, it was still fascinating. Gave a bit of insight into your own preferences. Can wait to see more, although next time you might want to use a script.

Part of the joy of this hobby is restoring them! I've found some in the e-waste that weren't working at all, and either needed repairs or were just useful for scrapping parts, and I've found some that were left in the elements and needed to be thoroughly cleaned out and rust treated, and worked perfectly fine after being reassembled!

Love your videos so much! I try not to miss any of the shorts, they are so peaceful - they take me back to simpler times. But as nice as it is to hear the hum of the old machines, it's also neat to see and hear more of you!
