I'm not a musician, and i don't know sh*t about "classical music" , but Emil led me to musical path i had no chance to cross before. He is a direct link between the composers soul and the audience and raised my interest for these masterpiece. Thanks Mister Gilels!

Исполнение Великого маэстро завораживает. Вне всякого сомнения. Это гений

Fascinating; I am used to a quicker and more articulated interpretation, but somehow Gilels makes slower and smoother work nigh-on perfectly. Another stunning performance by one of the best pianists of all time!

I must have seen a dozen comments telling me to come and listen to Giles play this piece.. so here I am listening... and yes I must say this is utter genius. This man does not "slam" a single note in this entire piece. Other concert pianists have said this about Chopin. Chopin does not yell anything at you. Every secret is whispered into the ear.

it's a concert AND a recording session too as Gilels liked having his concerts recorded, he said the best recording studio is the live concert hall. In fact this particular concert was previously released on audio CD, on the Music&Arts label licensed from Melodiya i think.

Great stuff. This must be a recording session given the boxes in the background.

Depends on what edition he has used. My teacher was from Russia and they were very particular about what editions were used. Some very different ideas from the US.

@samspianos this is the main concert hall of moscow conservatoire, by the look of it.

    Feel a little Beethoven here

This is excellently performed, but I can't help but feel that, had I to play it, I'd restrain the emotion a bit in the interest of the architecture of the entire sonata. Interesting! I'm looking forward to hear the other movements.

Nevermind. I see all the people in the audience. Odd choice for a background of the stage.

It's a shame that the USSR turned out to be a failed experiment. If only Russia were as affluent as the US, and so its citizens had as much freedom to pursue the arts...what might have been...
