"Speed Test" Pyranha Scorch X VS 12R?
    Scorch X
    www.pyranha.com/kayaks.php?ka...
The Scorch X takes all the positives of the design and turns them up to 10 (including the length!); More dry rides. More skip. More speed. More fun.
Dave Fusilli had been dreaming of this boat for a few years and hounding the Pyranha design team almost as long; the concept was refined for the regular Scorch size range, whilst the X offers the raw, unadulterated, boundary-smashing X-perience for the connoisseur.
Plane and plow over everything with style and grace, feel unstoppable, and change the game. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.
    12R
    www.pyranha.com/kayaks.php?ka...
The 12R is an uncompromised, hyper-fast, ultra-fun 12ft longboat which is only limited by your imagination. Multi-days, attainments, races, vertical miles, challenging and developing your skills, crazy big enders, big booming fun, or simply mixing it up with your crew; if the 12R doesn't put a smile on your face, you might consider seeking medical attention.
The 12R design team has included several athletes and coaches from Olympic Slalom, Wildwater and even Surf Ski, and that expertise has been used to pay attention to how power is delivered through the boat to maximize forward speed; the 12R features a narrow catch and outstanding cockpit geometry as a direct result of this unique approach to the paddler's ergonomics, noticeably increasing comfort and power delivery.
What's more, the 12R once again really nails the balance of fast and fun, combining the best of the 9R with some new ideas that only Pyranha would be willing to lead with.
    Thanks for Watching!

This is awesome! The splits were much closer if you trim the race at the end of the competition track (and exclude the flatwater across the lake).

I did notice that was like seconds closer but can tell you that it takes a lot more energy to keep that boat up to speed

Both are rockin’ boats! In looking at the footage from last year’s Green Race the 12Rs CONSISTENTLY rocketed through Speed Trap; when so many other boats slowed, staggered, or just got stuck. I would LOVE to paddle a 12R one day.

My observations and opinions. First, the Scorch X is a heavy boat and takes some muscle to get moving even for you (in your fastest lap comparison, you are paddling much harder to start off with the scorch X and the 12R still smoked it) second as you mentioned, the Scorch X wants to turn and and lock in, which causes you to expend energy to keep it straight instead of propelling it forward. It's much easier to keep the12R on a line, though if you let it get offline, you'll need a bit of gusto to get it back on. I also noticed at the end of your Scorch X fast lap, you're putting a lot of effort in to finish strong where with the 12R you didn't even need to do that and you were still faster. I wonder what would happen if Pyranha made a Scorch X out of carbon fiber and maybe we could get Chris Hipgrave to do Ocoee race laps in both. :-) Love the video, Wade, going fast is my thing and these comparisons are a lot of fun and very interesting.

Great observation yes It took noticeably more energy to get the X going and keep it going if it was a longer race course no way I could keep that pace and it’s the rocker that’s piled in the front which if just blasted down a river I want the X all day but this is only for the people that said it was a faster race boat what’s more fun to paddle I’m saying the X all day I love paddling that boat it my all time favorite reviewed boat so far

Good video and cool to see the comparison. However, is this the best comparison? Question, is the X a short long boat or a long short boat? IMHO, the latter.
The X definitely exists in a gray area and needs some more definition to figure out its place in the kayaking world.
-First, it's not a purpose-built race boat like the 12R. Its fast but that was not its intention from its design/creator. It was designed to stay on top, skim and skip out of things. It's just a stretched M Scorch.
-Second, it shares more design characteristics with the modern creeker/short race boat. With ample amounts of rocker (the most of any boat atm), a planing hull to a rockered tail, this boat fits the mold of a modern SHORT creeker/race boat way better.
-Third, if you're talking the nitty gritty of length and kayak races, the X is much closer to a short boat then a long boat. 9'5'' (large Nirvana) is the longest boat allowed for NFC, and most long boat classes are 11'+. (Let's see how this changes over time ;)
This is kinda like comparing a drag car to a drift car. Can they do both, sure but obviously they will be much better at what they were designed to do. If both paddled perfectly, the X has no chance of keeping up with a 12R or other long boats. However, put the X and 12R in a race on a tighter river/creek, maybe with some gates, and the X will probably do much better then the 12R. But back to the point. The comparison that would be closer would be a L Nirvana or something like a Gangsta. The X is a long short boat that is not designed to race.
Getting into the weeds a little and splitting some hairs. Boil it down and it will come down to who you are paddler, what river you running and what your paddling goal is. Paddle both the X and the 12R if you have a chance, they are both great for their own reasons!

I have talked to so many people that think the X is faster then the 12r in flow and want to use it as a race boat for races that are short and tight and I disagree with them i had a chance to have both boats in a controlled sitting so why not try and see what’s faster
I do want to do a head to head with X vs Nirvana phantom alpha ect will see if can make that happen but still this was fun just actually putting numbers with these boats thanks for the feedback

@@WadeHarrison oh for sure. Definitely not knocking ya for doing it. Was just trying to point out the X’s design and it’s real purpose. Because I’m with ya, everyone thinks it’s a race boat. I just wanted to clear the air and stop this idea that the X is a long boat. If people continue to think that it could stop them from hopping in a rad boat because they are expecting long boat speed. Just saying. Keep doing your thing! Look forward to seeing an X compared to other creekers.

@@muffinking92 yeah buddy I’m like you it’s in a grey area at 10’ and that much rocker and width to me it bridges that gap between 9’ creeker and long boat but actually closer to a creeker then a long boat can see in the head to head video how dry and how easy the X went over things and I was taking the faster conservative lines

    • @WadeHarrison
      @WadeHarrison  Год назад +1

I have paddled all those and if it's a down river race with holes and rapids the Nirvana wins but if it alot of flat water with limited rapids to go over Brappp and Ripper wins but overall the Ripper is the best all round Fast down river boat out of those.
