    Today is episode 114 of Shop Talk Tuesday on The Rivers' Experience! When we do a build series on Shop Talk Tuesday we go into further detail on how I accomplish different steps in the build process and how I choose to utilize the tools I have available.
    Be sure and check out my website. I have several knives available on the site and all of them have a video (or several) showing how they were made!

    Thanks for all the tips Erik!!! I've been making knives for about 7 months now, and without fail each time I'm stuck I find myself coming back to your channel, always the simplest and most easiest instructions. Keep up the excellent work, much love from South Africa.

    Definitely a sweet one! I really like the details. False edge, jimping, ...exposed lanyard hole is a nice touch. The blade finish is awesome, the handle colors are really nice with the oil finish.
    Another one for the "want!" list.

    Wow you nailed it. I was in hospitality for 25 years and used lots of different knives over that time. I have seen some beautiful knives that are not suited for the tasks in a professional kitchen. Conversely, one of my favorite knives is an off brand I got from the knife guy that sharpened knives for our kitchen. It was like $25 14 years ago, it’s just a 10 inch stainless chef knife with the original rosewood handle scales. But the balance is great in a pinch grip and the steel is amazing. I have abused this knife. I have done things with it I would never do with my high end knives and it is unkillable. The point is, it was created by someone who knew how it would be used and it is still going strong many years later. A knife is a tool and it needs to be made to fulfill its intended purpose. I love that you used wheelbarrow handle on that knife for that reason, it looks great as well !

    Ive started making this knife from 5160 leaf spring, ive traced the profile from my tv screen by pausing one of your videos, ive baught a cheap 1 x 30 belt sander and its done a good job grinding the profile of the knife, mine wont be a tapered tang because the leaf spring im using wasnt tapered, ive also made a plunge line jig like you done in another video, tomorrow i will drill the holes and start on the bevels ive only done two knives prior to this so far its going well, thanks for the videos.

    Yeah you are right 👍depends on what kind of wood you take for the scales it needs some attention 🙏 I use mostly hard wax and heat it up lightly to let it soak in 5-6 times 🔥that gives a good cover and its watersafe so far 🍀learning by doing 👍and by the way I like the way you did your handles I will try this oil what you are using thx so much for your skills ☺️

    Great, I really like harpoon blades, I am making one now with a similar size harpoon on. The only thing here which is not to my taste,is how the scales drop down on the top front. Thanks for sharing, great knife .

    Great video, thanks for sharing your ideas and techniques. After you finish shaping and finishing the scales to you re-etch the exposed edges of the tang? I was trying to judge color in your final views of the knife and one part seemed bright, and another part seemed darkened as if it was etched. I have tried to re-etch the tangs of a couple of my knives after completing the handle and is difficult to keep the scales from taking on some of the color of the etchant, ferric chloride in my case.

    • @theriversexperience9383
      @theriversexperience9383  2 года назад +1

      I didn't re-etch the tang I went with a satin finish on it and the edge of the swedge. I'll show more of it next week when I sharpen it and make the sheath.

    There's a whole lot of different knowledges that sort of have to come together to make knives- apart from the material engineering, geometry and tool use you basically end up in a constant cycle of learning that never really ends. Anyone that reckons they've figured it all out is probably full of crap. You can definitely know a lot about certain aspects but still wake up on a new day and find out something regarding a blade profile, geometry or metal that you'd never considered. The last couple of years has been hard on the learning curve as its hard to meet people in person, get some feedback on some principles and a bit of critical feedback on how your work progresses from experienced peers or customers and there's only so much objective opinion you can get from yourself or close friends/family.
