I noticed that Laura was riding the Breadwinner and not the e-bike. I hope that means she's been recovering well! Thanks for the video of the tour, looks like a gorgeous ride!
This is the content that I so patiently wait for. This is why I'm here, I understand the review aspect of this channel, its necessary for so many reasons but I enjoy these videos the most. I'm too poor to afford any new gadgets or bike parts but I still appreciate the educational purposes of parts review videos. For this reason, seeing y'all get out and adventure makes me stoked to also get out there and ride my bike. Love to see Laura back on her bike! Thanks again!
The Michelson trail is part of Adventure Cycling Association's Black Hills tour. I rode that event a couple of years ago and it is a great tour. It travels through Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park too. I highly recommend it.
I rode the entire Mickelson both ways in two days on my Fargo in 2018! It was a dawn to dusk adventure both days. Camping in Edgemont on the southern end was the most mosquito filled camp night I've ever had.
As a resident of the Black Hills, the Mick is a go to for a lot of us. Doing the whole thing in one day is definitely doable, and don’t discount the southern end of the trail! There is an AMAZING canyon between the last trailhead and its terminus in Edgemont that is only accessible/viewable from the Mick. It for sure is a different vibe than what you rode, but it’s worthwhile. Thanks for showcasing one of the jewels of the Black Hills!
Learned about this trail in 2020 when I went camping out there and was shocked by how long and scenic it was. The ride looked even better than I imagined it would be.
Being a Rails-to-Trails member is definitely worthwhile; their guidebooks are very handy, and their HOF trails are always worth a ride. Thanks Russ & Laura!
Thanks for the review. This trail has long been on my list. Also, if you guys are into tunnels come back through Hood River in a couple years and ride through the Mitchell Point tunnel currently under construction for the bike path. It will be an amazing feature with side cutouts with stunning Gorge views.
Awesome video. That is one of my favorite places, Custer State Park / Black Hills/ Mount Rushmore/ Badlands National Park/ Devils Tower. Everything we saw out there was BEAUTIFUL!
Glad you enjoyed it--I agree, it's a treasure! I'm going for #3 this fall, about Oct. 1st (just the perfect time to be there, excepting the odd early season snow, etc.) and we'll do Edgemont-to-Spearfish then back to Edgemont. Also nice to see your partner riding with too.
Looks like an amazing ride, now on my list. Looks like you guys ride with some more traditional saddles vs. Brooks or other leather so popular with the party pace crowd. Maybe a saddle video?
Thanks for the awesome video! I need to get out there to ride that trail! I love rail trails. I just finished a 455 miles ride from the eastern end of the Katy Trail in Machens, MO to the western end of the Flint Hills Nature Trail in Council Grove, KS. You should really check out the Flint Hills Nature Trail. The scenery in the segment from Council Grove, KS to Allen, KS is surreal!
Terrific video and music. Great scenery on a lovely rail trail. Great to Laura out pedaling too. I mostly ride rail trails in SE WI as many old roads have become too auto clogged in Metro areas. Well done folks.
I rode this trail south to north this past year, lovely experience. Outside of Custer and Hill City there's not a lot in terms of resupply. My advice is to go downhill (N-S) and stop at Hill City for your overnight. Lots of cool stuff to see along the way!
If you're ever on the East Coast you need to check out several of the rail trails in Cape Cod Ma. Although all paved the views are insanely beautiful next to the ocean and through the woods. They're all free to use.
Thanks for sharing, added to bucket list. If ever in Mid-Atlantic side you might want to check out the New River Trail. 58 miles, plenty of grade, hills, river, facilities. I'd like to hit the C&O Towpath between DC and Pittsburgh someday. Another big one is in West VA.
This has been on my bucket list for a long time. Would you mind sharing how you get from the airport to the trail? Car rental? Some sort of shuttle? These are the details that I get stuck on.
I just started a paid subscription to Traillink a few days ago in preparation for a vacation that will include as much cycling as I can fit in. I expect to be using it a lot, and this one may be on my list to do.
I don't know how I would get out that way but I definitely need to ride this trail. But, I suppose for now I could live vicariously through you. I would love to see a ride video where you just showcase the trail in all its glory.
Hey man! First of all thanks for your videos. They are everything I need as a newbie to cycling (other than BMXing as a kid). I picked up my first "real bike" about a month ago. Specialized Allez... just to test the waters. I'm hooked, but am looking more towards the non competitive side and want to start keeping the supple side down. Do you have any thoughts on belt driven bikes? I was looking at the Priority Apollo.
NIce video. This is a great trail and you guys didn't even get to the best parts (in my opinion) , especially from Mystic to about 5 miles north of Rochford. There is also a great place to get a beer and a burger in Rochford. I've ridden this trail a number of times and it never gets old.
PS: don’t forget to check out the frequent interpretive signs along the way. The area is rich in history, from Native Americans, abandoned mines, to ghost towns. Custer led a famous expedition into the hills two years before Little Big Horn. There is signage where he shot a grizzly not far from Rochord.
Good night, make a video of the Burley Coho XC Trailer, showing the details underneath, and how is the hitch, the hitch arms do they open and close? Is this really safe?
Just biked from WI to SD just to do this trail. I had to laugh because when I hit the Mystic trail head my smallest bottom bracket gear had just fallen off and it was pouring down rain. Looks much different in your video!! Absolutely a must do trail though. Go N to S, its more down hill but you do end up in Edgemont which isnt the best..
I have always wanted to ride this one. I love being a rails to trails member. Did they ever add any campsites along the trail? I know that was a complaint by some when it first opened. Thx for sharing!
Areas through the Black Hills NF allow dispersed or wild camping. All the agencies are fairly mum about camping because the ROW crosses so much private land. I used a Forest Service map and a public lands app to stay clear of issues.
I was watching this and I could hear a train whistling and rumbling in the distance. I had to double check to see if Russ put that sound in the background.
Boa noite faz um vídeo do Burley Coho XC Trailer, mostrando os detalhes por baixo, e como é o engate, os braços do engate eles abrem e fecham é isso? Isso é seguro mesmo?
You’re so lucky with your Rail Trails in the US. Here in Australia, we’re constantly fighting against landowners’ sense of entitlement and lack of government funding
Oh yeah, another trail to put in my list. Russ, I heard you say it was hot. What are the temps while y'all were there. Hot there and Texas hot may be a bit different. Lol That looked like a great ride ✌
Just don't go in early August. I made the mistake of going to the black hills then and it was during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. We wanted to enjoy the nature but things were LOUD.
Hey! Swing by Quartq in Spearfish I'll give you a tour!! Give me a shout. L sure you some other stuff to ride. I use to run Deadwood Bicycles which was the terminus of the trail.
Dang it Russ, us South Dakotans thought we had a secret...LOL. Next you need to look at the Flint Hills Trail in Kansas. BTW, as a Crocs lover you need to watch the Alt Tour vid. Lachlan Morton rode most of it on plastic flat pedals with cheap foam sandals. Probably 1500+ miles.
I noticed that Laura was riding the Breadwinner and not the e-bike. I hope that means she's been recovering well! Thanks for the video of the tour, looks like a gorgeous ride!
I noticed that, too! :D
I noticed that too

I feel this Ben!! I'm with you.

What time of year were you there?
Wow, kudos. I did northbound in 3 days and felt the burn. 110 in one day is some serious hustle!

Planning on riding this!
Really good to see Laura stronger. Missed her contributions. Go Laura!
What a gorgeous ride! It's great to see Laura back on her ❤bike. Have a great time, you two!

I've been a monthly contributor to Rails-to-Trails for many years and this trail has definitely been on my list! Gorgeous! Thanks!
That is nice. I like the entire concept of showing people nice places to ride their bikes!
Haha I just did a section on the North end and thought about you two. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

Your videos are fab, but the ones where you explore/show your rides are my absolute favourites.
Glad to see you guys riding together. Beautiful trail too
Love to see the riding content back! This trail looks awesome!
The southern park of the trail is spectacular! Do it all!!
Thanks for the awesome video! I need to get out there to ride that trail! I love rail trails. Thanks. Great to see Laura.
Wonderful video and trail. My husband and I have ridden the Olympic Discovery Trail and now we need to ride this one.
Definitely a bucket list trail! Really enjoy your ride videos. Hopefully you have more coffee & bike shop as well as fishing rides in the future!
My wife and I are big fans of you and that trail. We just did the north part this last weekend. Sorry we missed you. Thank you for this.
Terrific video and music. Great scenery on a lovely rail trail.
Great to Laura out pedaling too.
I mostly ride rail trails in SE WI as many old roads have become too auto clogged in Metro areas.
Well done folks.
Laura looks fine and that's GREAT news!
Man I love these trails ride videos that you guys do.
Rail trail - so up and down - but gradual yet you feel it. The nature of rail trails.
Laura back on her beloved Breadwinner! You love to see it.
Rode a portion of this when staying at Custer State Park. Always said I would be back.....and I will. Thanks for the reminder !
I rode this trail south to north this past year, lovely experience. Outside of Custer and Hill City there's not a lot in terms of resupply. My advice is to go downhill (N-S) and stop at Hill City for your overnight. Lots of cool stuff to see along the way!
I too recommend the trail. The Mystic to Rochford section follows a mountain stream and is very nice as well.
So glad to see Laura riding again!
Great video. Thanks for bringing us along.
Mystic to Rochford is very elemental, being around Rochford on the trail around late afternoon is very beautiful.
Looks like an amazing adventure! Thanks, for sharing.
That if very cool!. More of these rail to trails being done!

I did it in May 24, and used Dave’s World Tours.
I just started a paid subscription to Traillink a few days ago in preparation for a vacation that will include as much cycling as I can fit in. I expect to be using it a lot, and this one may be on my list to do.
This trail has been popping up a lot lately. Looks like a Great Trail.. Scenery looks Stunning🚴😃
"an artisanal tunnel"... loved that!
Good to seeing you guys riding and enjoying the sites
I don't know how I would get out that way but I definitely need to ride this trail. But, I suppose for now I could live vicariously through you. I would love to see a ride video where you just showcase the trail in all its glory.
The trail material is crushed limestone, which is mesmerizing. Going back soon to ride end to end. 👍🏻
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing your ride.

that trail looks amazing, thanks guys, and that weather, raining here in UK
That looks amazing!!!
Good night, make a video of the Burley Coho XC Trailer, showing the details underneath, and how is the hitch, the hitch arms do they open and close? Is this really safe?
$4 well spent, absolutely beautiful (and a surprisingly long route!).
You didn't pack your lights?! It may be just me but powered up lights are always on my bike.
2:11 I believe that trail surface is decomposed granite.
Looks beautiful!
Love rails too trails! I got the Katy trail right across the street from im so Spoiled
Beautiful ride, thanks for sharing!
Great vid you guys! Looks spectacular!
told you that this trail is epic, glad you liked it. it gets much love. cept when the cows puck it up with their hooves and poop all over it. lol
I have ridden The Mick and yes it is a must ride
I do enjoy the non-competitive side of cycling. Adventure riding is the BEST.
SO F...ING STOKED TO SEE LAURA ON HER BREADWINNER!!! SO GLAD TO SEE YOU HEALTHIER, LAURA!! 🙌
Nice & informative. Thank you both for your work.
I have always wanted to ride this one. I love being a rails to trails member. Did they ever add any campsites along the trail? I know that was a complaint by some when it first opened. Thx for sharing!
There are some private ones you can book near towns.
@@PathLessPedaledTV that's great to hear. Thanks.

Thanks for the review! Very timely since I’ve been aiming for this ride as well. Really enjoyed the description of the tunnel…;-)
Love the Mikkelson trail!!
Time for you guys to go to Sparta, Wi. But bring your lights
I was watching this and I could hear a train whistling and rumbling in the distance. I had to double check to see if Russ put that sound in the background.
Looks amazing added to my list
Looks fantastic, Australia has only just started thinking about rail trails, not much to offer at the moment 🚲
Boa noite faz um vídeo do Burley Coho XC Trailer, mostrando os detalhes por baixo, e como é o engate, os braços do engate eles abrem e fecham é isso? Isso é seguro mesmo?
What song is playing around 3:55?
where could one find a list of rail trails?
You’re so lucky with your Rail Trails in the US. Here in Australia, we’re constantly fighting against landowners’ sense of entitlement and lack of government funding
Wait till you hear about Europe.
@@TheSJCieply I’m waiting….. 😉
Love the ride videos!
Oh yeah, another trail to put in my list. Russ, I heard you say it was hot. What are the temps while y'all were there. Hot there and Texas hot may be a bit different. Lol That looked like a great ride ✌
Dynamo lighting would always be with you. Do some reviews!
Geez Russ, my bucket list is already too long! 😉
Hey Russ, is that the Bell XR you're wearing? If so, mind giving a quick review?
Nice funky music
Russ, bet you wanted to go down there and fish!
Russ can you give us your thoughts on your Bell helmet, thanks and great film as always
Just don't go in early August. I made the mistake of going to the black hills then and it was during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. We wanted to enjoy the nature but things were LOUD.

Is there a shuttle
Bet it’s great for business in those cities
Wow!
Y u no post strava links?
Any fishing?
you all should have rode to Rochford and had lunch :)
I just realized Russ has drop bars. Ok with the carpal tunnel ?
Yes. Flat bars aggravate my carpal tunnel. Drop bars are fine.
maryland C&O rail trail is noice
Dang it Russ, us South Dakotans thought we had a secret...LOL. Next you need to look at the Flint Hills Trail in Kansas.
