Joel- that was the late Joan Rivers. She was a trailblazer for women; she was a stand-up comic, an author, had her own TV show in the 80s-90s, and was a commentator on fashion and celebrities- always outrageously irreverent. Also famous for being happy to talk about the hundreds of cosmetic surgeries she had over many decades. She died unexpectedly in 2014, while under anesthetic for a procedure on her throat. It was eventually decided in court that the death was as a result of medical malpractice.

Graham Norton is an outstanding host and the format of his show is light-hearted, fun, and extremely enjoyable. He actually manages to pull out many stories and experiences from his guests which no other talk show ever gets close to. I think Graham is so disarming and charming at the same time. I'm so jealous of why we can't have a Graham Norton show her in the US. There' NO politics they have guests on that can drink and relax and not have scripted answers. And it's a real fun show. I saw the Queen at my university in Winnipeg. She cane to commemorate a new building or some such thing... and did a walk around the central square.
I remember seeing a jock from my into psych class had climbed a tree. He was 15’ off the ground. And he clapped when she neared. The onlookers clapped!
I had a crappy one-use disponible camera. She received flowers from 2 old ladies next to me. I failed to get a picture from 2’ away! Damn camera needed the frame advanced!
So I ran down the way, and climbed a younger tree. I got a picture of the top of her head in the sea of her security detail. You wouldn’t even know it was her.
At least I was within 2 feet of her once. And thrilled to be so close!!!

Of course, Graham Norton is one of Ireland’s best exports where he started his career in Irish broadcaster RTÉ and he’s also a gay man - he is following in the footsteps of the late Sir Terry Wogan, another Irishman who was in the BBC and had moved from RTÉ - the late Gay Byrne was in ITV before going back to Ireland and joining RTÉ with fellow radio broadcaster Kathleen Watkins, then he handed over the radio show to Marian Finnucane and later on Joe Duffy before focusing on the Late Late Show, an Irish institution in RTÉ before it went onto Pat Kenny and Ryan Tubridy - Sir Terry had done the Eurovision commentary for the BBC for many years before also attending the Irish State Banquet at Windsor Castle 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧🇺🇸❤️

I’m not a fan of the Royals but when I worked in central government I was invited to a reception with Prince Charles at St James’s Palace. I assumed many people would be there and I needn’t even talk to him. As we entered the room Charles was just finishing talking to a group when he turned and came to the entrance. Fortunately for me one of my colleagues stepped forward to shake his hand and I was able to dodge into the crowd.

I liked Joan Rivers because she didn't give a shit what anyone thought about her. Good for you, Joan.

You're my man, Joel. Seriously: I can't tell why, but I somehow think there's something special about Graham. And Britain generally.

The Queen was funny in real life. There’s a true story about her once shaking hands with people at some event, the sort of thing Jackie Chan talked about. She was talking with a group of people including the British politician Clare Short when her (Clare Short’s) cell phone started to ring. Short and the rest of the group were mortified with embarrassment that this should happen when the Queen was with them. After several seconds of uncomfortable silence (apart from the phone ringing) the Queen said: “You’d better answer it, it might be someone important.”
    True story!
