as a small artist i hate having to figure out algorithms so much. its already very tiring and time consuming to create art but to also figure out a whole ass algorithm… man i feel like its only gonna get harder
Go with an 80/20 rule of high effort and low effort. Don’t be afraid to copy and paste content and then put high effort (whatever that may be) into videos and enjoy the process I study social media, but I’m also a creator. I’ve been stressed over the same things you are worried about and this was my solution. I probably spend 30mins-1hr a day Monday-Friday on my social content and it is so much more enjoyable than what it used to be. Less expectations but still gaining results
Same here. 🤷🏽 I’m getting NOWHERE with Instagram! I can post a Reel on Facebook and quickly get 800 views … post the same Reel on Instagram and get 5 views! 🤷🏽🤦🏽♂️ Never ending changes! 🤦🏽♂️ I’m just posting from now on.. I can’t keep up with new changes every freaking week! Ridiculous.
My conclusion is always the same: have fun while creating and provide people with value they want. All algorithms, even the RUclips one has the same rule: if you can hook a user and give them what they want and there's HISTORY of your content being watched - you're good. This is why it's so difficult to start and this is why it's so challenging to get views when the competition is so huge. Thanks Millie for this breakdown, even if it leaves us with a slightly depressing feeling. We will be alright :) sending hugs

Hey Millie! Your videos are great, keep going ❤️ I was wondering if you could do a video on hashtags? How effective are they? Can we track which hashtag brought the person to our post for example? Is it worth using a trending hashtag because we are less likely to appear on the first page or is it interesting? If you’ve not already made a video like this, could be interesting! 🫶
In my opinion, as a casual Instagram user that wants to see specific content subjects, the search and explore part still needs a lot of work from Instagram. If I just navigate explore, most of the content I have no interest in (maybe they just push viral content without caring about how I interact with the platform). If I try to search for specific content for each accurate result there's 4 random posts with nothing to do with what I searched for. It is really annoying. With the technology that there is around for ages, dont know why they don't take advantage of SEO and other mechanisms
I think I just stumbled upon my new favourite online marketing expert. Many thanks Millie! Cool, funny and helpful content and visually very pleasant videos too :)
I've heard that it's best not to use music from Instagram in your reels because the audio could be stripped later due to copyright. Also, in order to add music, you have to upload natively in the app, but if you want to include a thumbnail, you have to upload via desktop, where you have less control over audio.
Instagram never shows me more of what I like or watch. The more I like and watch learning Norwegian content, for example, the more it spams me daily positive phrases in English, how to crush my small business goals, and how to write a book in an hour or 2 days-none of what I click on, like, or watch. I’m here to figure out why they’re doing that, but halfway through, I haven’t seen any yet. I never watch Reels or Stories at all, either.
the metricool graph about reels reach whoo boy that definitively has rung true for me. Like I'm not going to stop makign them since I'm repurposing content from tik tok, and short video is still what my demo wants, but it does make me want to spend more time in stories than in making feed posts.
Certainly! Instagram's algorithm is subject to continuous evolution. Thnak you ,Milie for generously imparting invaluable insights and valuable information to us.
I feel like the algorithm is changing because way more people create. It becomes an app to create instead of consume, which could be a problem because there is an overload of creators. Or am I completely wrong on this?
In the best way possible, yes, that take is completely wrong. Way more people are born every day and way more people create every day. That also makes more people to consume. More ideas to exchange. Everything is always flowing. The statistic is that about 1 out of every 100 accounts that are “active” on social media are ones actually consistently posting content. Think about how many videos you’ve watched versus how many videos you’ve made. Never let ANYONE (including yourself) ever believe that the market is getting too saturated. Huge life advice for ever owning a business or even just getting your hands on money. There will always be room for you. Your spot is there to claim!
Yes! So the algorithm doesn't "favor" new creators. What happens is when you create a new account, you're feeding the algorithm FRESH information. Because of that, the app is able to quickly categorize your account and your content to push it to the right people. When you have an account that's like 10 years old, it's almost like "information overload" for the algorithm. There is so much history it's working with, it might not be able to accurately identify how to "categorize" your account because two years ago you were posting random photos, but now you're trying to be a creator. It can be confusing to a computer that's just analyzing data. Did I explain that okay? 🤞🏽🤞🏽
I've been trying to make up for my lack of former IG reach by laboriously commenting on the posts of people I follow. Because of this, it's just glaring to me that most people don't post more than once or twice a month (unless they're business owners), and many of the professional accounts I used to follow haven't posted at all this year (or maybe just once or twice). It's literally almost impossible for me to find enough new posts to comment on (even just 10 a day). Takes me the better part of an hour. IMO, people just aren't caring about this platform the way they were a couple of years ago. I can feel the burnout (even from folks who just post pix of their kids or their dinners). Anyone else feel this way?
You’re definitely not alone. After leaving the Instagram “rat race” of posting everyday for 60 days , i too realized that a lot of creators slowed down with the pushing out of the content, and for similar reasons. I realized i can’t spend my time chasing this algorithm because it was taking away from my livelihood, my mental health, my family. I too now stick to posting once or twice a week- with quality posts and a little more strategy- and my audience grows at the same rate, sometimes more. I don’t think you need to kill yourself for the algorithm. Just do what you can ❤
@@mysticalqueengoddess Yes, this is what I feel is happening. I'm trying to crack Tiktok right now because there might be a better chance there. We will see . . .
Burnout is so, SO real. It's unfortunately the reality of IG. If you don't set healthy boundaries around the app, you are more likely experience burnout because it it so so much. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Ever since Facebook ("Meta") took over Instagram, they have continued to throttle user reach. In the past, you could make some alterations and bounce back, but recently, it just doesn't happen. When they eliminated "Recent posts" in hashtags, they essentially took away the ONLY avenue available to get seen without algorithm intervention. Now, all of your posts essentially depend on Instagram to show people and Instagram has stated that they prioritize posts with higher engagement, which means they are prioritizing bigger (and corporate) accounts. They claim that their analytics "understand their users" but clearly they don't, because their users are frustrated, posting less, and/or leaving the platform. I don't want it to die, but Facebook is really working hard to kill it.
I follow a lot of sewing post and I look for sewing machines and look for boutique. Then all that appears on my phone and I would be confused. But now that you saying this, now I understand. I was wondering what was happening 😅.
so much good info! should we keep our research activity (like instagram coach tips) on a separate account from our business-related content so it doesn’t get confused on the “stuff we like”
I loved what you said about IG headquarters not going in everyday and making changes to the algo😂. Makes sooo much sense to me. I was just wondering if this is something they also confirm from their side. Like is there a place I could go read more about this?
I dont know I have grown my account to 136k followers in 5 years. Until the summer I got atleast 5-10k likes every 5 reels and had some reels going to 500k likes and 9mil views. Now suddenly I have around 1000 likes and I see that as a good post. Instagram kinda just destroyed my account for no reason. People that follow me do not see my content at all and it really pisses me off as I put so much work into growing my account .
Millie, could you please please do a video about the best and strategic ways to plan stories with metricool? I find it a little bit hard to see the value to do that…
Hi Millie - Great vid! I think the reach is down because 1) as a creator, you have wayyyy more competition than you did a few years ago and 2) content is stale. How many times do I want to watch someone, I don't really know, bake cookies or model their outfit of the day? Dunbar's Law states that the average person can only keep track of 150 people. After that, relationship lines are weak. If I pick up a handful of new people to follow because they are fabulous. - like Princess Catherine and Nigella Lawson the chef, I will, without realizing it, bump 2 people out of my top 150.
I completely agree Julie!! There was also a study that showed users are on Instagram LESS than the year before. So not only is there more competition, but people are spending less time on IG so they aren't coming across as much content
I have noticed a huge drop in reach as well. I was wondering with the algorithm: can it hurt your pro for acne if you use the same account to view things you personally like. You know what i mean like interact with things unrelated to your niche?
I've often thought that too, as well as maybe I should open an account just to view the things I like, or perhaps I'm just creating more work for myself🥺
Honestly, it's one of my pet peeves when people make weekly (or even monthly) "the algorithm changed AGAIN" videos!! Like...of course, it changed...it's always changing...calm down 🤣🤣
@@MillieAdrian the more you look into it the more you worry. Not only that but you made a really good point that different people/accounts have their own individual algorithms. Not enough people know this and I feel like most of those weekly algorithm “updates” are the blind leading the blind 😂
Your videos are great! They have a lot of useful info. Would you have any advice on starting a instagram channel for music? Specifically beats (instrumentals) and dj mixes, as far as reaching more accounts and promotion??
Thank you, Gabriel! My advice is to you is to find the content that your audience is looking for! Don't be afraid to ask your audience, test out different things. See what works and what doesn't and give yourself grace!
I know how the algorithm works so that I can tailor a reel to make it reach new followers but carousel posts almost never seem to reach new people and I don't know how to make it happen like it used to
That's because the algorithm for carousels simply are not the same as the algorithm for Reels. Reels were DESIGNED to help you reach new people, carousels were not🫤 You'd be ridiculously lucky if a carousel post went "viral" because those posts are mostly suggested to your current followers (unless they're chosen for the Explore page, which is a whole other beast)!
Honestly I'm not too sure! I'm part of a few peoples broadcast channels, but their content/posts never appear on my feed or story bubbles. I'd have to do more research to see if channels help with engagement!
I find it interesting that I can post all different kinds of content with various descriptions and hashtags but NOBODY sees my stuff. No views, comments or likes. I'm INVISIBLE...LOL
Ahhhhh John! You're not invisible. Stay consistent on one niche, and see how your reach increases. You're probably confusing the algorithm a little bit 😂
If your niche is "lifestlye" then Instagram is not the place for you, I'd try TikTok instead. But if you WANT to still focus on Instagram, then you'll just have to pick one topic to post about🤷🏽♀🤷🏽♀@@sma1616
@@MillieAdrian Lol. Most influencers got started just posting lifestyle content. Sharing their lives. Instagram is supposed to be fun, not all numbers and metrics. That’s why the app is dying. Y’all sucking the fun out of it. It can be fun AND successful in my opinion. Thanks anyways! :)
Man, instagram has become impssible. If the people who follow you don't even see your posts, what's the point? If I'm on there to see posts from people I follow, and I'm seeing random "suggested", "sponsored", or advertisment content, instead, I'm spending less time on the app and not taking it seriously at all. I have a creator's account and my content isn't reaching my audience. They talk about wanting to support creators, but it's just not worth it. I miss when it was new and simple. Are there any other apps that are like what instragram used to be?
This got more and more interesting toward the end . So correct me if I'm wrong, based on what you said, about the use of audio, would there be more chance of going viral if I encourage people to make reels using the reels I just used?
Thank you for explaining this all so well. I have a question. In advanced settings why should we allow people to download our reels. I’ve found my reels on another site and thinking I should turn this feature off.
Thanks so much for responding. I just don't have it on my screen anymore. It used to be in the upper right corner and now it just disappeared. I have been searching for a week for any info including contacting Instagram with no luck. Am I the only one who has this problem?@@MillieAdrian
Hi @MillieAdrian thank you so much for your content is amazing! I have seen your videos and I have a question, what about if I don't want to expose my face on my brand and want to have a logo instead? Is there a strategy? Thank you!! ✨
Hi Monica! Thank you so much for your sweet words. Some accounts have found success being faceless! I would recommend looking for other faceless accounts that are successful and look at what they do!!
Great video, I’m new to using Insta for a new small business I’m creating. Thank you! What’s the difference between reels & stories? Cheers from Aus❤️🇦🇺
Hi Chelle! Reels expire after 24 hours and don't post to your feed. Reels can be posted to your feed, and viewed as a post. :) Both are video form, just a little different! Once you start using the app, you will start to see the differences between stories as reels!
QUESTION: If you block somebody only from commenting on your pictures and videos on Instagram (it means that they still can comment but their comments are visible only to you and to them but not other people ) Then it means automatically your comments won’t be visible on their pictures too? Because I did it to one person , but then-when I commented on their post my comment wasn’t visible to other people either ,only to me. Or it means they blocked me from commenting as well?
Hey Millie thanks for the amazing content. I had a quick question so with Ig I feel like I have been pretty much posting all over the place since I started my page about 6 years ago lol. Do you think it’s best for me to start a new IG page since I am more aware of my niche and what I need to post so that IG can understand better what my page and content is about for the algorithm?
Hey Crystal! You're so welcome. No need to start a new page, it will take some work- but hone in, really niche down, post consistently within you niche, and IG will catch up! :)
@MillieAdrian What if I post about my many, I mean, many interests under the family blog niche....family activities, home decor, organization, gardening, cooking, outings, dining, fashion, makeup, hairstyles, dogs, cats, music, some traveling, etc.... I can't just pick one thing, it's my life. Halp!
After last update how edit videos on instagram? If I choose for example few photos and some videos and want cut a little video it not let me. I just not see continue button.
I can't understand why some accounts with way few followers get soooo many likes on their posts -- even when the posts aren't anything special. Thoughts??!
Accounts with few followers will show on the algorithm with a “high” engagement rate because if 50 people follow them and 40 people people engage with their posts that’s a lot of their following. So the algorithm thinks that this person has high engagement rate compared to people that have 2k followers but only get like 50 likes.
Please help My account has been locked from getting any followers for 2 weeks now. I have no warnings and my status is green. I can't see my posts in hashtags anymore either and this happened to my friend too and yesterday they had their account banned,. What is going on . They had the account for years and now all gone. We worked so hard on these . It is heartbreaking. Also we couldn't follow many people too. We are not alone in this , I have asked a lot of people since this started on November 1st. Please help.
Hi @millieadrian I enjoy your content however this video was difficult on my eyes. The video appears Smokey or foggy or not in focus - the text and graphics were clear and the ads on this video were all clear. However the parts where you are talking appear out of focus or foggy? It made watching difficult and unpleasant. All good because I just put headphones on and listen but I thought you should know - love the content just the video portion of you talking was too blurry and difficult to watch.
Hi, Millie. I love your videos. Here’s a positive criticism that I think could make the viewers experience even better when watching. I’ve noticed that there’s like a cloudy filter on your videos lately. The picture quality is not clear enough, i don’t know maybe it’s the filters you guys put or how you process the video but that’s one thing that kind of subconsciously bothers me whilst watching.
Oooo that's so weird I haven't noticed that! It doesn't look blurry on my end🤔 Honestly, maybe I need to clean off my lens before filming 🤣 you're watching in 1080p?
@@MillieAdrian - Hi Millie! Loved this video! It was posted on our FB community for digital marketers so I'm sure many of us are watching and following you now!! I am a photographer/went to film and photography school and if you look at the light reflection in your eyes, the focus is sharp, consistently. However, what others are perhaps alluding to is when you move. You are very animated (which is great!) but when you move there is blurriness because you are moving but you eyes are still sharp! It's not a focus issue as far as I can tell!

Thanks for sharing! Could you explain what you mean by foggy filter? I've had two comments about that and I'm not seeing anything foggy on my end 😭 Is it too bright? Or is the background too blurry? I'd love to hear what you mean so I can make proper adjustments on my camera
@@MillieAdrian it might be your team is trying to use your brand colors maybe so it can be a filter on brown for the video. I can’t say it is blurry but it does not look ‘normal’. It’s too beige maybe this is why makes it look foggy. Doesn’t look like a light issue.

People that follow me do not see my content at all and it really pisses me off as I put so much work into growing my account .
same, like whats the point of them following you if they not going to see your post, only like 5% of the people that follow me see my post
It is really really frustrating. I understand!
My niche is all over the place. No wonder I haven’t been growing past few months. I also can’t down niche either I just love too many things ahhh
Please never stop to do videos ❤
Really really great tips!! Thx 😁
You're so welcome!
Helpful video. Thanks
Super helpful as always! Thanks, Millie!!
Ahh thank you, friends!
Thank you so much for this video!! I’m studying digital marketing and this was super helpful for my research and studying process!! :)
Glad it was helpful!
As much as constant algorithm changes suck, this video coming out on the 1st November is such as a score! Shall be taking notes later 👀✍️
YES! Love this.
I have noticed a huge drop in reach as well. I was wondering with the algorithm: can it hurt your pro for acne if you use the same account to view things you personally like. You know what i mean like interact with things unrelated to your niche?
I always suggest that you interact with things that will help boost the algorithm in your favor. :)
I've often thought that too, as well as maybe I should open an account just to view the things I like, or perhaps I'm just creating more work for myself🥺
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your content!
My pleasure!
Thanks so much for breaking this down and making it digestible 👏
Any time Sam 😁
This was extremely helpful and thank you for giving examples of everything for better understanding
Of course! Sometimes the way they explain things are confusing to me so the examples help me process 🙈🙈
@@MillieAdrian Same here
Hello Millie, can you pls tell us how the RUclips algorithm works? Thanks
YES! RUclips has even less information out these explaining their algorithm but I'll find everything I can do make a video 🤗🤗
@@MillieAdrian 🙏🙏😘
1:19 this this this! It’s so easy to get lost in the “THEY CHANGED THE ALGORITHM” videos to the point of no return
I’m the third yay 🥰 thanks for everything you do Millie
Hey! Thanks for following along.
Very insightful but your also Very funny 😂
I don't care about the algo and grew my channel from 0-200.000 in 4 months. I only do reels and did 1 a day for 3 months.
Good for you! That is such great success!!!
I love the voice over sound effects! Lol.
That's how the app sounds in my head
Great video, Millie! ❤
Thank you, Trish!!
Informative! Thank u! Yeah mine definitely changed coz I changed 😂❤
You’re welcome 😊
Your videos are great! They have a lot of useful info. Would you have any advice on starting a instagram channel for music? Specifically beats (instrumentals) and dj mixes, as far as reaching more accounts and promotion??
Thank you, Gabriel! My advice is to you is to find the content that your audience is looking for! Don't be afraid to ask your audience, test out different things. See what works and what doesn't and give yourself grace!
I know how the algorithm works so that I can tailor a reel to make it reach new followers but carousel posts almost never seem to reach new people and I don't know how to make it happen like it used to
i started with reels and now carousels do better… haha, instagram is so unpredictable…
Hi! What do you think of broadcast channels and are those playing a part in our Instagram engagement?
Honestly I'm not too sure! I'm part of a few peoples broadcast channels, but their content/posts never appear on my feed or story bubbles. I'd have to do more research to see if channels help with engagement!
It seems so easy for an IG user and SO DIFFICULT for an IG content creator! I am getting so tired of IG!
You're probably confusing the algorithm a little bit 😂
how do you niche down if your niche is lifestyle @@MillieAdrian
Hey Eleanna! Ah I am so sorry :( I know that it can be frustrating. Don't give up, girl, if IG is what you want!
@@MillieAdrian well, youtube is what I want. Instagram was just a tool... it's still becoming more impractical.
This got more and more interesting toward the end . So correct me if I'm wrong, based on what you said, about the use of audio, would there be more chance of going viral if I encourage people to make reels using the reels I just used?
If people use the audio you used, absolutely!
The other algorithm is that instagram will look at the recent post you posted and show up those relevant post in your feed
Great video! Does Metricool post to instagram, Facebook page, Pinterest and RUclips shorts? That’s what I need
They allow a content calendar for each of those, yes!
Oh yeah, just when I was starting to get traction on views and likes on Instagram, it just dropped out of nowhere.
Instagram should change their name to the “confused algo app"
Half the tabs, things behind the dots etc things you mention are simply not visible on mine.
Thank you for explaining this all so well. I have a question. In advanced settings why should we allow people to download our reels. I’ve found my reels on another site and thinking I should turn this feature off.
That's completely up to you 😁 I think it's a personal preference thing!
Great video. Do you know where the icon for photos went on Instagram Live when you broadcast
Hi Stewart! I didn't know that it moved. Not too sure, yet!
Thanks so much for responding. I just don't have it on my screen anymore. It used to be in the upper right corner and now it just disappeared. I have been searching for a week for any info including contacting Instagram with no luck. Am I the only one who has this problem?@@MillieAdrian
People don't see their friend's feed because the home is filled with suggested posts and ads, not because they don't look at it 😪
It's true. There are a ton of those.
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the super thanks 🥺🫶🏼
Love all your content I have a question for the send gift button does it go by certain followers you have so you can have that feature??
Great question! You have to have at least 500 followers in the US, 5K followers in non-US markets.
@@MillieAdrian ahhhh thank you I was wondering about how that feature worked!!
QUESTION: If you block somebody only from commenting on your pictures and videos on Instagram (it means that they still can comment but their comments are visible only to you and to them but not other people )
Then it means automatically your comments won’t be visible on their pictures too? Because I did it to one person , but then-when I commented on their post my comment wasn’t visible to other people either ,only to me. Or it means they blocked me from commenting as well?
Metricool ❤'s You!
Ahhh I love you right back, Metricool.😁
I vote for interpretive dance!!! Thank you for all you do to help us content creators! ❤❤❤
YESSSSS interpretive dance is always the answer.

Do you know anything in regards to Meta’s monetization program?

There is SO much information on Meta's website. :) That should be the most helpful for you, Brandon!
Thank you

Please help
My account has been locked from getting any followers for 2 weeks now.
I am so sorry to hear this. I'd reach out to support to the help desk.

Hey, Michelle! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate and value your feedback.🧡
Atp I’ll stick to my RUclips channel no thanks this tew much
Girl, I 100% understand!
Its starting to get so hard to keep up with IG i can't 😂
😂 girl, same.
Hey
What has caused reach to drop?
Basically an increase in number of users on Instagram and a decrease of “time spent” on the app!
1:36 could you just speak like this throughout the whole video?! 😅 either way, I’m subscribing for more ❤🎉
HAHA! Sure thing!
2-3 years? How about 2-3 months…. This is ridiculous
Does metricool do LinkedIn too???
Yes!
👍🏻👍🏻

Instagram sucks
Hello. I think your videos are great however this foggy filter does not make you justice. Luckily I mostly listen RUclips rather then watch it..
I am the first to comment on this awesome video from Millie. Millie's video's are inspirational. Love 🥰 the video and love 💞 Millie.
Thank you so much 😀 You are always so kind, David!

@@MillieAdrian you didn’t really give anything tangible to do except “niche down”
Actually, all of this information is valuable depending on what you were looking for🤗🤗 This video simply explains and breaks down Instagram algorithms. It's important to understand how they work before trying to do anything else.
Then from there if you want to learn how to use the algorithms to grow on Instagram, or increase engagement, that's what the other videos on my channel are for!💪🏽💪🏽@@sma1616
@@MillieAdrian I think the audience is the judge of it’s valuable to them or not, actually.
