Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

If the disbeliever came with this reason then [even] their dua/supplication would be accepted.
    - by Sheikh Abdussalam Ash-Shuway'ir (Hafidhahulaah)
This brother asks [about the Hadith]:"Supplicate whilst being certain of Allah's response"-At-Tirmidhi No.3479, Authentic. What is the meaning of this [type of] supplication?
Oh Successful [brother]. Indeed, Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) has made that there be reasons for the answering of the dua [supplications]. Rather, if the disbeliever was to perform some of the reasons for the answering of supplications, if he came with this reason then his supplication would be accepted. What is this reason? Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) said: "Is he [not best] who responds to the desperate one [Mudtarra], when he calls upon Him and removes evil?"-An-Naml Verse-62. Anyone who is desperate, then his heart becomes attached to Allah. Because the desperate person, has no options in front of him except one. Anyone who cuts off connections and assumptions with [everyone] other than Allah and his heart does not become attached to [anyone] except Allah, then his supplication has become like the supplication of the desperate one. Therein, his supplication would be accepted even if he was a disbeliever.
And for that reason, it comes in some of the narrations that: "At the end of time the person will not be saved except if he makes a supplication like the supplication of the drowning person"-Al-Mustadrak Ala As-Sahihayn, Authentic Statement of Hudhayfah (radhiAllahu anhu).
Whoever falls into the depths of the ocean one day, then Allah (the Majestic and Glorious) saves him. This person knows that the one who has fallen into the depths of the ocean, if he turns right or left, he does not see anything except water. And if her submerges in the ocean, he also sees darkness, so how about if these 3 darknesses combined upon him [all at once]. This drowning person knows that there is no relief for him, or reliever except Allah. This drowning person, whoever makes a supplication like this supplication, will have his supplication answered [by Allah].
However, the people are on different levels in their strength of their desperateness [when making supplication]. Different levels in their strength of desperateness. And this is the meaning of the Prophet's (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) saying, “Supplicate whilst being certain of Allah's response"
The more your desperateness [to Allah] is the higher and your certainty in Him (may He be praised and exalted), the more complete your response will be. And whenever it is less [i.e. the desperateness in your dua, then indeed the response will be less complete. And from minimum of what is referred to as: Certainty in supplication is that you contemplate during the supplication and to venerate the One Who is being called upon. And He is Al-Jabbar (The Compeller) the Most Honorable and Generous. This is from the greatest [form of having] certainty in your supplication.
And there is a point to be made here, some people may supplicate with an innovative supplication that was not narrated. Rather, there may be in the supplication prohibited words/exceptions, such as istigatha or istia'nah. And Allah responds to his supplication. Rather the person might make supplication in a place that is Islamically prohibited [to do so]. So we say: this is not because of the [specific] wording of your supplication, nor was it responded to, due to the innovative form that you came with. But rather, it was only accepted due to what was in your heart from the desperateness. That even the supplication of the disbeliever is accepted whilst he is desperate.
Some of the people say: "Come to the shrine (mazar) of such and such, and supplicate at it, for indeed, supplications are performed at [the shrines]". The supplication was done with desperateness [and so] was accepted, not because of the place that dua was made.
The prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) showed us that Allah (the Majestic and Glorious) is the only one to be called upon. And imam Malik (rahimahullah), look at the understanding of the imam of Medina imam Malik (rahimahullah), the one who had revealed about him, as it was said, the hadith of the prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam),"It shall soon be that the people will beat the livers of camels, [meaning hastening and rushing towards seeking knowledge] but they will not find anyone except the scholar of Al-Madinah"-At-Tirmidhi, Good Hadith. Imam Malik (rahimahullah) was passing through, here, in the masjid of the prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), so he saw people sending their salutations to the prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and they wanted to make supplication, facing the grave and turning away from the Qibla [direction of the prayer]. So imam Malik (rahimahullah) became angry and said, “Innovation! If you want to make supplication then face the Qibla! Make dua to Allah (the Majestic and Glorious)". The man said, “I am making supplication to Allah". Imam Malik (rahimahullah) said, "Yes, but from the reasons for your supplication being answered is that you face the Qibla".
Therefore, supplication is for Allah alone. The prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) made supplication to Allah alone. If you want your supplication to be answered, then make that supplication to Allah (Glory be to Him the Most High) alone. Dua/Supplcation is worship. You are in the house of Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) and it is the masjid of the Messenger of Allah Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) where prayer in it is like a thousand prayers. So make supplication to Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) alone.
So, this is what is related to: [having] certainty when [making a] supplication.
