Thanks for this, I've been looking for this QT interview for a while. Frustratingly, it's not the one I remember. There's definitely a QT interview from the Early 90's in which he says exactly why Reservoir Dogs is called Reservoir Dogs (There were dogs in the reservoir down the road from his house that were always hanging out, but would always snarl and fight with each other) - But I'm finding it impossible to unearth.
I recall him saying it was from a video store customer who mispronounced a French title, saying some thing to the effect of “Why would I want to watch a movie about reservoir dogs?”
Funny how he said "a film of this genre would only have 10 minutes for this" when he stole this from the last 10 minutes of "City on Fire". It's not just that he stole the premise, he stole arbitrary details from the original that weren't necessary. But I am glad he did, because it allowed to make Pulp Fiction, which was his best and only lastingly good film. "Dogs" is okay, but just another decent film like hateful 8 or Django. I hope but doubt he will make anything as good as Pulp Fiction again.
whatever your opinions on the rest of his films are, inglourious basterds and jackie brown are arguably just as good, if not better, than pulp fiction. regarding the city of fire thing, i dont know why tarantino hasnt acknowledged the city of fire similarities, and forget about the every great artist steals defense (which i happen to believe), reservoir dogs isnt famous for its stolen premise. funny how every critic who brings this up forgets about the other various aspects of filmmaking - its acting, dialogue, style, camera movement and framing, soundtrack, story structure, etc. etc. these are the reasons reservoir dogs is great. anyone is capable of stealing city of fires premise, but only few could make a film as good as, and with such finesse and charisma, as reservoir dogs
