  • Hey guys, what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, as part of our Halloween run, today we’re finally doing a deep dive of Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.
Set a few years right after the first film, in this sequel, the borders separating our world from mythic realms become perilously thin when ancient grievances threaten to kickstart a war.
Prince Nuada, an exiled elven prince, returns from obscurity with a vengeful agenda, aiming to rally the mystical forces against humanity. His ace in the hole? The legendary Golden Army, a dormant battalion of unyielding mechanical warriors, that once awakened by a magical crown, could tip the scales of power irrevocably.
Enter Hellboy, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense's (B.P.R.D.) most unconventional asset, and his team, as they navigate through a clandestine world filled with enchanting markets, treacherous prophecies, and age-old conflicts.
Juxtaposed against the vivid backdrop of ancient lore and contemporary challenges, del Toro's narrative not only showcases epic battles and monsters, but also delves into personal dilemmas and the intricacies of love, loyalty, and legacy.
The kaleidoscopic ride, fuses the whimsical elements of fairy tales with the hard-edged realities of a world where the extraordinary and the everyday intertwine. And in this video, we’re going to explore the story, the characters, the golden army warriors and the production of one of the best comic book sequels.

I blubbered when the last elemental forest god was killed and how its blood turned everything into flowers...it was like watching the death of all the fantastical dreams we imagined as children. And then we grow up and have to pay taxes. Adulting sucks.

Prince Nuada is a criminally underrated villain.
His costume design is perfect, elegant yet intimidating.
His writing gives Thanos a run for his money: a warrior intent on waging genocide against humanity, all to protect his people and civilization.
His acting and action scenes are so cool and badass; actor Luke Goss absolutely nailed it.

Since films took a nosedive in the last few years, specifically due to ideological bents and obnoxious propaganda, I can't help but wonder if so many great films just prior to the downfall of Hollywood were effectively shelved in order to prevent quality competing with them.
I'm serious. So few good films being released at the same time Hollywood went bananas is one hell of a coincidence.

@@Marcara081I think that’s a terrible take on what’s going on in hollywood. This film also has ideological themes (genocide, environmentalism, religion, Us VS Them…)
The difference is that mega-monopolies like Disney, ect.. are messing with the film process (unlike this film was back in the early 2000s-2010s) you can blame capitalism for micromanaging and total clouding of studios

My partner and I went to this movie on our first date. He actually thought I didn't like him because I was so stiff throughout despite saying I loved the first movie, meanwhile it showed how much I liked him and the sequel since I was in the incredibly loud theater at all (I'm sound sensitive and hate crowds). Enjoyed the movie much more once it came out on DVD. Neither of us are particularly romantic, we don't celebrate anniversaries and a couple of years later we got into a debate over just how long we'd been together. I ended up looking on IMDB to see when the movie had come out - we were both off by several months. It's been 15 years since sometime this past late July, early August. 😆

it cannot be overstated how teeming with whimsy and GDT's fingerprints this film is, and it really boils over with gripping fantasy. Yes, it all causes the pace to go a bit too brisk, especially the first Act, but when the plot finally settles on the prince and his quest things get truly great.
I don't know how well it did in theatres, but after I saw it personally, I was waiting near breathless for a follow-up with Ron Perlman still leading the titular role. Alas, it never came.
I also never saw the most recent iteration, I just couldn't understand why it needed a 'reboot' with a new tone and lead

I was so sad this never got a sequel. It was an astounding monster movie, it beautifully grew from the first, it showed the further wonders of the other side of the world. While also showing that there is beauty in the horrible strangeness. Everything felt like it had grown, deepened. The darkness was from further back, another time, a different world. If the next had the same degree of growth it would have been honestly astounding.

From what little info we've had on del Toro's plan for Hellboy 3, one child would be angelic and the other would be demonic. And get this: The twin born with human features would've been evil and the twin born with demon features would've been good. Subversion ammiright?
Anyway, chances are that his good child would've helped to stop the apocalypse and prevent the end of the world.
Del Toro also stated that some characters (But not which ones) would die. Its possible that Hellboy's child may have been forced to kill him to prevent Armageddon. But sadly, we'll never know 😔

Probably pure nostalgia at this point, but I remember seeing this movie the first time, I liked the first Hellboy a lot, but this one was just special to me. Specifically the Troll market, watching it open up and then learning a little bit about the lore of Hellboy's earth. It gave the impression to my young imagination that maybe a few thousand years ago on this world, it could have been easily confused for middle earth from LoTR.
The troll Market opening though, that I think is what cemented this movie as great in my mind, the idea of this whole GIANT business center hidden right in the middle of a normal city... it brought me back to the world of Harry Potter and the likes of Diagon Alley, or the Leaky Cauldron and Hagrid's famous brick tapping trick, idk, I guess it let me have that idea that maybe here in our real world, there was magic just waiting to be found around the corner... ahh, yeah it's a nice memory of a wonderful idea during an amazing time in my life

I enjoyed this film, and wish we would have gotten a part 3, but the one thing that took me out of it was the prince using the princess as a hostage. Her psychic connection to him was known at that point, and she proved at the end, he literally couldn't kill her without killing himself. It made abe bringing the crown piece and returning it to him very stupid and contrived.

This is the Hellboy actor I like playing the role
The new guy doesn't hold a candle to the one that has played it. RON PERLMAN.

In fairness to Nuada he was proven 100% correct. Man did not abide by the treaty as he predicted

The 2005 movie Reeker might be of interest. Watched it on a whim and was pleasantly surprised.

Prince Nuada is my favorite villian type: one who has the clear moral high ground. Like Killmonger and Thanos, he really isn't wrong, he just doesn't have to be such an ahole about it.
