It's a documentary featuring dramatizations of real events that the U.S. Air Force dealt with. It's also a propaganda film. The Montana and Utah films are famous in the history UAP studies and were widely analyzed. The originals are in color. Ed Ruppelt wrote a famous book about his time on Project Bluebook. You can get it and read it. (The original edition is preferable.) You can read about the history of Projects Sign, Grudge, and Bluebook in works by serious historians. This is not a joke.

Al Chop appears again in the 1970's production "It Has Begun." There he speculates that ufo's are from other planets. This documentary of his earlier career in it's simple narrative way, not over-acted, gives a respectful view of the Air Force and it's operations at that time. It's wonderful how we can identify with the protagonist, Al Chop, as he learns more- especially the radar scene at Washington D.C. July 1952, which is solemn and awesome!

At one of the UFO conferences I attended, I happen to meet the son of one of the Military advisers for the film and he told me that his father said it was the governments first attempt to see what the public's reaction would be if they disclosed the truth about UFO's. Supposedly, the poll was abandon due to the Military demand. I saw this movie at the age of 10 and it made such an impression that I became a researcher in the subject.

I notice this film came out the same year as Air Force Captain Edward J. Ruppelt's very credible book, The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects (1956). It's a shame more people don't know the unembellished, actual early history of Air Force's Project Blue Book. My grandfather was a test pilot who rose to the rank of Colonel in the Air Force and he didn't ridicule this stuff at all. He didn't draw a conclusion one way or the other about whether some UFOs are extraterrestrial, as far as I know. But it was a possibility he took seriously, as many professional pilots did.
I have the impression that this film was part of a larger propaganda campaign intended to educate, manage, and prepare the public regarding UFOs. I wonder if it was made, officially or unofficially, at the request of Dwight Eisenhower.

I thought I recognized Harry Morgan's unmistakable voice!!! The two films were made in the early '50's -- at that time, no one, that we know of, had technology that could do what those things were doing!! I was very young, "back then," so I don't remember much about details, but I do remember all the hype there was about UFO's! With the release this past June of the much-anticipated, but nothing-burger, report about what UFO's are, it seems we have not made much progress in all the years since this documentary was made in getting to the bottom of what these objects are -- at least, what the "guv" is willing to let us know. This was a very good documentary -- leaves me thinking of the song, "One-eyed, One-horned, Flying Purple People Eater."

I asked my mother to buy me a book called "Operation Blue Book" back then and devoured every page when I received it. The first pages of the book depicted Cpt. Mantell and his pursuit of a UFO, identifying it, and closed on it. The aftermath was the destruction of Mantel's aircraft. Speculation had it that Mantell was shot down by the UFO.

I'd have to presume that it was understood that all the voices and people were not all real participants (the opening statements and footage make it clear how many and which of the people appearing in the film were actual witnesses). These are reenactments for the most part, since no one was there recording every moment. No one questions that a narrator is used (radio-tv-film actor Les Tremaine) to summarize and tie events together. Some of the people in this are real participants, a couple are actors and many are just real people (non-actors) who likely were not at all present at the events discussed, but were needed to tell the story visually. This film was done on a tiny tiny budget, shot by Howard Anderson (whom I met and knew to a degree). The "amateur-ish" quality many of the commentators here seem somewhat fixated on seems pretty obviously due primarily to the film makers' use of non-actors and the shooting of much of this on actual locations with bad acoustics (the booming/echo-y sounds of the voices) etc. I feel the people who made it did not have a lot of experience with film making, but felt the big UFO story of the day a subject worth covering. It is not sensationalistic (certainly not by today's "everything is breaking news"-type overhyped news coverage), though it IS stiff and crudely done. The supposed ufo footage is not faked/not done with vis efx etc. As to what was being photographed?---who knows? There could very well be a good explanation, but no one has come up with any believable theory as to what the objects/lights are.

I remember this propaganda-styled movie-documentary back in the 50's. It still had that WWII style with the hysterical announcer barking his lines and stiff actors acting out their parts. The marching music was especially entertaining. "This is NOT fiction . . . " Uh huh. Yeah. All in all, it was a fun movie.

I was born on July 30th 1952 one day after this Pentagon report was released. My mom said it was a very hot summer in the Northeast. I was born in N.J. But if you look at the Washington news papers during this time, they too will mention a heatwave. This video seems to be accurate and true.

It didn't show the Los Angeles UFO air raid! The National Guard AAA batteries opened up, jets scrambled, air raid sirens, people panicking, almost as bad as the Mercury Theatre production of The War of the Worlds, orchestrated by Orson Welles before 1942! But the LA Invasion was real!

Saw this UFO movie on television in 1961. Tom Towers plays newsman Al Chop who ended up in the UFO business. It's an excellent documentary and includes UFO videos taken by Delbert Neuhouse and Nick Mariana. I agree this should be on the History Channel. I'm sick of the Ancient Aliens series shown on television.

I am absolutely certain that the producers, the director, cast and crew and the majority of American movie goers who saw this as it debuted were convinced that it would be, "only a matter of time" until our Government broke it's silence and revealed what it knew. Now, over half a century later, despite demands by the public, there are no revelations, no official affirmations, or acknowledgement from our leaders regarding this subject. Half a century-kinda sad aint' it.

This was one of the first films set to ready the public to the realities of UFO's and what they were. The public at that time was actually quite ready to accept we had made contact with another world. But we kept trying to shoot them down and things were never got to a position where we felt in control. Of course later, we began to realize there were more than one species coming here. Nor did we realize some have been based on the Moon. etc. etc. etc. Go outside at night and watch the stars for awhile, if lucky, you may see some interesting things.

And I have no doubt people were mistaking satellites for UFOs before there were any satellites in orbit.

"It was 50 times the magnitude of the brightest star" - - now i would like to know just how in the HECK could he have known this ? what is he other than a pilot ?, is he an EXPERT ON THIS SUBJECT ? is he a Scientist ?.

“...50 times the magnitude of the brightest star...”. This likely means 50 times BIGGER in size than the brightest star... he is an expert and a scientist since he’s flying 17 years for American Airlines and studied science to perform his duties. Not that this really matters anyway....
