Hi Friends, in this tutorial I am showing how to avoid basic mistakes and attract attention to the focal area in the painting. I share what is very important to do, but many ignore. I talk about most important aspects and how they affect your watercolor. Many aware of these aspects but do not know what actually lays behind the words. Many know good techniques but keep doing mistakes. If you wish to view the good example in full please find me on Patreon, the link is above.
Hope it is helpful.

Happy painting!

Each single word you said weights like a stone: condensed valuable information for any growing artist. Thank you for opening our eyes on how true art is done!
Thank you so much for doing an unsuccessful painting to show us the don’ts. Very helpful to look at both paintings side by side and go over the key points
I'm so glad it's helpful! Thank you Jia!
Your Dos and Don'ts are so great. I have been watching many so called master grade artists doing their demos but they never have these ideas explained clearly. The side by side comparison of the Dos and Don'ts paintings is inspiring. Thank you for your effort.
I'm so glad! Thank you!
« You don’t need to think like a land surveyor », to keep in mind to let the artist out, love it
Finding you has made the most impactful changes in my watercolors! Thank you so much! You have motivated me and made me fall in love with painting again!
Thank you Sophie! I'm so happy to hear that!
The DO/DON'T approach is so so helpful. Great video, thanks!
One of your most important sentences (around 9:10 and in my words): Art needs interpretation and a story, not reporting news.
Thank you so much for this video!
I'm so glad it resonates! It takes intelligence to see this! And a lot of practice to achieve on paper, but so rewarding as at some point you realize you don't need to paint every window to suggest that it's a house...
I have never come across someone who explained things so clearly. Thank you so much for you tutorials! I am still a student but once I have a full time job I am definitely becoming your patreon. I would love to learn watercolour from you. You are not only my favourite art teacher but my favorite watercolour artist as well ❤️
Thank you V! I'm so glad it's helpful!
Thank you! You have explained to me exactly why some of my paintings have been great, while others have failed! This is going to help me tremendously going forward!
That's great! I'm so happy!
Nina, your advice is so awesome and the format of do and don’t so meaningful. Thank you! 🇨🇦👏
I'm so glad! Thanks Glenda!
Thank you so much Nina for this EXCELLENT video!!! Most helpful one for watercolor I've seen, but then, I had not seen your channel til now;) 😊
I'm so glad! Thank you Belinda!
You are so sweet. Deciphered such complicated painting so easily
Thank you so much Tahera!
Nina, I just had an aha moment realizing why my paintings look flat and dull. Using some of the "don't" and trying to paint the colors that I see. Thank you for the great information outlined in this video!
This is awesome! I'm so glad it's helpful!
The “don’t” painting is soooo me 😂 Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your knowledge. I can clearly see what I do wrong!
So glad it's helpful! 👍

I'm so glad it's helpful!
Thank you your all videos are so helpful❤
Thank you so much for producing this video.
Great advice! Very helpful. Thanks for sharing. I'm a fan!
This summarises some key do's and don'ts which is very helpful. All I have to do now is incorporate these guidelines in my approach to painting. Time to start this: my next painting!
Excellent, that's the fun part!
The best advise I have ever found. Thanks a lot.
I'm so glad it's helpful!
These videos are so useful. I am almost tempted to give watercolour another go now. When I tried it before I think I made every single one of those common mistakes and I couldn't work out why the pictures turned out so bad. This has really inspired me.
Yay! I'm so glad! Watercolor is fun! Hope you do 👍
Great tips which no told earlier. At least, I haven't heard. Thank you.
So glad it's helpful!
Nina your explanations are awesome and a great help to enhansing the painting - thanks a lot 👍👍
Thank you Jalal! I'm so glad!
wonderful detailed explanation - very helpful!
Great tips, especially on color harmony. Side by side comparisons worked beautifully. Interpretation of a subject is difficult for me, and your suggestions are outstanding.
This is great, I'm so happy! Thank you Joy!
Very helpful. Thankyou.
Many thanks…..nice to know the right mixture for the first wash.
Thank you Willie! I know many struggle with this, I couldn't miss the chance to show it :)
Love your guidance 😊
Wonderful lesson full of tips for good painting, instead of blindly copying.
You're an asset, thank you
Thank you! I'm so glad!
Excellent, informative tutorial, and it's as applicable to the paintings I do using acrylics.. Thank you for sharing.. I have liked and subscribed..
Thank you Rita!
Nina, this was such an informative video. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and for the clear and concise way that you presented the information. I found the do and don't format with an actual example of a city scape and recap of the concepts to be very helpful. It helped me to see where I am generally far to representational in my attempts. It would be great to see a video in this format with an actual example of a somewhat busy landscape.
I'm so happy it's helpful MB! Thank you very much for the suggestion. Will definitely do it!
Best instructional videos for painting that I have seen...and I've watched a hundred of them. Thank you for explaining what no one else explains! The use of side by side "unsuccessful vs successful" is most helpful.
Thank you!
Brilliant, thank you!
GOod point about avoiding strong contrasts throughout the painti g. A photographer named Peterson states that we should try to avoid what he calls "screaming babies" in the photo. Ie, avoid things that draw our attention all over the photo (or painting) causing our eye to "ping-pong" all over the painting. Strong co traits all over the place will cause this effect, as well strong colors and values, textures, patterns etc. The "screaming baby" is any object or subject or groups of subjects that strongly draws out attention to it. There should only be one or a very few, right around the center of focus, with less "loud" details around the edges of the paintings that are much more subtle, and which add to the scene, and work tO direct the attention towards the main subject, rather than become further centers of interest in the painting, which compete with the main center of Interest. Things like intricately drawn windows on a building where every, detail is painted become things that vie for attention and draw interest away from the main subject. (If the windows are the main subject hour that is a different issue)
You are so right! Spot on!
Nina, jste skvělá malířka akvarelu. ❤👍
Opravdu moc vam dekuji!
Excellent information!
I'm so glad!!!
Muchas gracias por tus lecciones, Nina. Me parece que una forma muy didáctica es usar el concepto de "From tea to Butter", eso ayudaría mucho.
U are such a good teacher…I am always earning from u …concise…clear..with brevity.. thanks
Thank you Norman!
You are the best ❤❤
Thank you!
Thank you! This is such good information! I’ve been trying to add light to my paintings and what you said is really helpful. Thank you again.
Always a pleasure! Thank you Anna!

I'm so glad it's helpful! Thank you Anne!
This is brilliant, very well taught!
Thank you Stephan!
Bonjour, dommage qu'il n'y ait pas de traduction en Français. C'est superbe !
So helpful and clear. Thank you!
I'm so glad! Thank you Laura!
Thx
Thank you Ann, I'm so glad it's helpful!
Thank you 😊
Always a pleasure!
Great
Thank you!
Great video as always! What is this slightly opaque light blue you used here and in some of your latest videos? I think the one at the bottom of your palette? It looks amazing
Never mind, found your video where you go through your palette. If anyone is interested, it's Holbein's lavender!
Heyy I love your videos! Can you give me some advice on where to find reference for paintings?
Thank you! If you are on FB, there is a group called Reference Images For Artists. Lots of great ideas there.
This is just great Nina. The side by side is terrific. (I would love to give this a go en plein air. If this is in Melbourne, any chance of knowing what street it is?)
Thank you Gavin! Yes, it's in Melbourne, corner of Lygon and Queensberry St in Carlton.
@@nvfineartstudio7296 really appreciate it. Thank you 🙏
What does it mean if you like both paintings?
Hi Michael, it's absolutely fine, it's more for those who want to achieve "loose/expressionistic" style of painting...but obviously world doesn't end on this style, thanks heavens, otherwise it would be too boring, wouldn't it!?
Excellent tips. I’m always trying to copy the photo. What mop did you use?
Thank you Sue. I have a number of mops that I like and use on a daily basis. I have a video about my brushes, here is the link ruclips.net/video/3COEk4w5_w0/видео.html Since then I also added NEEF Alvaro Castagnet #10, #2 and #00. I talk about Escoda Aquario Gold edition there, but original Escoda Aquario is good too.
So in this video you recommend using alternative colours so it doesnt look like the original. How do I work out which colours to use?
Anything you like, it's art! The reason I'm an artist is that I can be free to do anything :) But if you insist on a suggestion, observation is the key, there is always a dominant color in your subject, vary it towards cooler then warmer option. If you have yellow building, it's a classy technique to add a bit of pink and violet wet on wet to suggest play of light and destroy the monotony of "same color" all over the facade.
@@nvfineartstudio7296 thank you
What colour would you suggest for sky where the main buildings are all of reddish /orange brown brick? The complementary colour of red is green….but this obviously wouldn’t work. Yet a bLue sky immediately makes it too ‘pretty’…..chocolate boxy
Hi Anne, such a good question. lf you need "blue sky of a sunny day", you can use Cobalt Blue, but add a bit of neutral tint, lavender and a touch of Cad.Red Light to make it more neutralised blue. After you applied it to the sky, very quickly grab a weak Cad.Red Light and do a few large brush strokes across closer to the horizon line. This will tie it to the "red brick" building and at the same time will add "sunshine" to the sky. Just remembered, if you cannot compliment you can always add the same color/hue to the shape and it will bring the colour Harmony to the painting.
im a realistic artist but im done with drawing like a copy machine. And started with watercolor and it's such an amazing journey but it's challenging to rid of drawing exactly what I see.
This is true, but I'm so glad you are enjoying the journey!
