@@Truthkiller13 There were slaves who weren’t fazed by slavery, most lived in the house tho. Just because it doesn’t offend you doesn’t mean it won’t offend others because *surprise* no race is one monolith and everyone’s experience with racism varies. The “it was a different time” argument that many like to throw around is also weak, considering we have historical writings of people calling out bigotry in the past, ergo its immorality was clearly understood.
@@CloroxBleachCompany Not sure why you decided to reply to me instead of the OP, but I said what I said and thats my opinion. You can't make feel offended and it's not your place to be offended for us. ✌🏽
@@Truthkiller13 I’m simply using you as an example of someone who employs identity politics to justify a weak opinion, this is common with the extreme left and the extreme right. “I’m American Indian and Mexican”, “It’s not your place to be offended for US”…you cover yourself with the mantle of race and pretend to speak on behalf of an entire group you’re clearly not a leader of. If you don’t want to subject your opinions to criticism then either strengthen your arguments or log off. No one is trying to convert you, if you feel that way it’s just your insecurity acting up.
Disney was going to cast Louie Armstrong but they didn’t because they didn’t want to have controversy of a black man voicing an ape, so they got Louie Prima instead, who is Italian.
In all fairness, "savages" is sang by both the english settlers AND the natives. The idea of the song was to enforce the fact that both sides saw the other as uncivilized, savage, murderous and dangerous.
Yip. Very one sided this list. I even realised it as a kid that both sides saw each other as evil and caused a war. A lot of this hatred for each other is still present today, but only one side gets called the villian, while the other side's hatred is bing celebrated or called justified. No one is trying to find a common ground and trying to get to the bottom of the hatred on both sides. I got the message of Savages loud and clear, but it seems the message was lost on Watch Mojo.
@@srbrant5391 I might be more inclined to agree if I didn't remember the natives were massacring, and enslaving each other before the colonists even got here. Heck the natives teamed up with the colonists in some cases to wipe out their enemies. When people start to grow up and realize that history is full of atrocities committed by all cultures and people we can start to move forward with making things better, rather than playing the blame game and stop finding reasons to hate each other. I'm this day and age most people don't give a shit what anyone else is doing as long as it's not forced upon anyone else.
What people don't get about King Louie is that Louis Prima, the jazz musician who voiced Louie, was an Italian Swing Singer who does a lot of scatting in his own songs
‘Savages’ did have obviously racist lyrics but that was kind of the point - they’re demonstrating xenophobia on BOTH sides based on their fears & ignorance & given the time period of the film is pretty accurate to how the colonists would have reacted to Native American tribes. So given the context of the film, I wouldn’t call it inappropriate as it’s demonstrating the evils of racism (at least that’s what I got from it)
It was meant to show the racist dudes as they were, but don't give us that "both sides" bs. One side had obvious malicious intent. The makers of that movie dropped the ball, and it's OK to point that out.
Wow, you completely missed the point of Savages. It's sung by BOTH sides and they're BOTH reducing the other side to "savages" and we're supposed to hate how they're both letting their fear and hatred drive them to war. Also, King Louie was voiced by Louis Prima and is using HIS style of music.
Watchmojo virtue signaling and acting like they actually are shocked just to get some views while knowing NOTHING about what they complain about.. There's a reason this channel has been in a decline for years.
@@Hitsvcards Or... Not getting offended by 70 year old cartoons is a good idea? People that need to make everything about racism are themselves the biggest racist because they decide to make EVERYTHING a race issue nowadays.
I feel like there's alot of blatant one-sideness towards King Louie in The Jungle Book. King Louie is inspired character from Louie Armstrong who was VERY popular at the time, and originally he was suppose to be voice actor for King Louie but, Disney had cold feet to idea since, it would come off as racist. Louie Prima ended up with the role and he lived in same state/area as Armstrong, so he would have similar accent as such. But he was Italian and not African American. Entire scene is nod to 60s Jazz music explosion, plus it's not making fun of any race at all. The monkeys were chaotic in the novels aswell and King Louie is wanting to possess the knowledge of fire. People just love setting false narrative.
As for "Aladdin", the lyric that was changed was "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face", which was replaced by "Where it's flat and immense and the heat is intense".
@@mikefink7548 Back then, too many people took jobs that we would never take these days. Looking back, I'm sure he sees the problem. People let racist crap slide because whites were so blatant with it, yet people didn't know how to fight large companies like Disney. Just because YOU refuse to see the issues, doesn't mean they don't exist.
I would choose the word 'outdated'. For it was another time, beliefs were different back then and people didn't see a problem with it. Instead of trying to get rid of what is negative to us now of what the movie had, it should be put into context, explaining why people saw it that way and how it was okay back then wasn't now. If we try to forget, we can't learn anything.
Being outdated doesn't exclude the xenophobic aspect. I'm pretty sure the guys at Watchmojo know the context behind the scenes and if their goal was trying to forget them they wouldn't be talking about them.
I feel like the Hyenas in “The Lion King” being viewed as problematic is silly. The script existed before any voice actors auditioned and the hyenas are hyenas and aren’t being used to represent an actual social class because they’re animals. They are supposed to represent the bottom of the food chain as hyenas are scavengers who feed on carcasses or prey on the weak in large groups. Also, I don’t think the actors would’ve agreed to play the part if they thought they were racist in any way.
Exactly. There’s documentary footage of hyenas having rivalries with lions over food and territory. Plus they’ve been shown to gang up on individual lions.
I think you need to give it another watch my guy. If you can't see that the hyenas are clearly meant to be thinly veiled depictions of humans then you need to educate yourself. And this is just one of MANY Disney movies that have animals playing gross imitations of humans... Most of which are in harmful and problematic stereotypes of humans. Rather than use the moment to educate children on human culture, they choose to denigrate an entire group of people for laughs. This is why I hate people like you who categorize people into groups that they hate
@@therealhatchlife9013 I know you’re trolling. Everyone has seen this movie dozens of times I don’t need to give it another watch to understand that the movie consists of drawings of animals voiced by an assortment of actors as a form of entertainment generally created for children. The hyenas exist in a lower class in the film…and stay with me here…because they are scavengers who are generally known for eating the scraps and remains left behind by other predators such as … Lions. And what group of people are they denigrating here exactly? Are they thinly veiled imitations of humans who are viewed as lower simply because they are voiced by minorities? If that’s the case could you explain why Mufasa, Sarabi, Young simba and Nala are all voiced by minority actors? That would mean both the highest class of people and the lower class of people are occupied by minorities which would indicate what exactly? The argument doesn’t even make sense when you think about it for more than 2 seconds. “This is why I hate people like you who categorize people into groups that they hate” who did I categorize into a group at any time? Honestly, at best you could make the argument that this is a social class situation and the lower class is depicted as unintelligent, deceitful and disreputable. But this class system is based strictly on who is the most powerful and respected in this case. From there you could maybe make a case that the hierarchy that exists is inherently racist… towards hyenas… in the animal Kingdom…But then you might realize that it’s an animated film about talking animals and Lion royalty. Disney has created plenty of racist content throughout the years which is clearly indicated by this list. The Lion King just isn’t one of those projects
and they mention 2 people that were hispanic and black depicting the "low life" characters, but Mufasa, Rafiki, Sarabi and Nalas voice actors were all black. so it has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the race of the characters themselves.
Seems we're stretching on some of these. "Savages" was sung by both sides, yet the video shows only the settlers singing it. If the hyenas in Lion King were problematic, I'm sure Whoopi and Cheech would've said something.
I was thinking this too. More so, when looking at the song “Savages,” historically speaking, Europeans who came over and “claimed” the land, did see the natives as “savages” simply based on how they lived. That being said, the song was a brilliant way to express how each side saw the other and their reasons why. As for The Lion King, hyenas in general, in a natural sense, are considered outcasts. The are scavengers who would steal fresh kills from those who did the work. They are mean and vicious. And as scavengers, it would make sense for them to be living in a place where creatures go to die. For them that would be an easy meal. I saw nothing racist about either of these, and I saw nothing racist about King Louie from The Jungle Book, because of the inspiration for him, and because of who voiced him.
Ah the comment I was looking for. Like, I get it, but yeah let's not mention the Native American's lyrics and the back and forth or anything. This is what we feared The paleface is a demon The only thing they feel at all is greed Beneath that milky hide There's emptiness inside I wonder if they even bleed They're savages! Savages!
The crows in Dumbo? At a time when films were banned in the South because White and Black actors were on film as equals, Disney cast 4 very talented Black singers as the Crows ( including Scatman Cruthers). The story was the Crows saved Dumbo, accepting him and giving him the Magic Feather. The end shot of the film is the crows traveling with Dumbo, becoming his best friends
They actually don't travel with him. They land on a lamppost and wave goodbye in the last shot, while agreeing that they should have gotten Dumbo's autograph. Also, Jim, the lead crow, was played by a white actor. However, the crows were heroes and encouraged Dumbo in learning to fly.
I find it hard to believe anyone found the fish racially offensive in the little mermaid. It's like people are looking for things to be offended about. It's a bit silly.

The thing about Si and Am is that actual thai people (Siam is the former name of Thailand) find the song funny specifically because siamese cats were bred too guard the palace of the king and they're kind of known for being loud foul tempered aggressive and mean.
@@alifuller1658 The clue is in the name of the breed as Thailand was known as Siam until after world war 2. The siamese cat is the national cat breed of thailand.
About the Aladdin video, a woman from the Middle East was beaten and ended dying because she wasn’t wearing the hajib. So yeah, those lyrics are pretty spot on.
Hello sir or ma’am, I am a Muslim hijabi woman who wasn’t forced to wear a hijab or tortured or anything like that. I’ve been to many middle eastern countries and not everyone is wearing hijab. Even the actor in the real life version for Aladdin he is middle eastern , but he is Christian. It’s not like he was forced to be part of a religion, but yes in every religion there is a people , who have flaws, not the religion. So please refrain from what you have just said, because I am not barbaric and it is disgusting to see a person by their country’s flaws. We are all human and the dehumanizing people forcing that woman to wear a hijab is barbaric , but the dehumanizing statement you made that all Arabs are barbarians is disrespectful. There is no reason that you should be saying that kind of things about any culture, religion,or race. We are all humans and we stand together as humans.
Nothing pisses me off more than people losing it over who voiced a character. The whole point of animation is it doesn't matter what you look like. Max G put it best in "The Apu that i know". A black guy can play a Japanese Samurai complete with a fake accent, a black woman can be an incan alchemist/priestest, and a hispanic can play an Austrailian Walloby. In Looney Tunes, a bunch of white people found issue with Speedy Gonzales, he was removed, and hispanics demanded he be brought back. They said there was nothing wrong with him. If you can't laugh at yourself and how you're culture is percieved by others, you should remember, Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Once again big credit to Max G of hotdiggiteydemon
exactly. skin color doesn't matter when your voicing a character. you find the right voice that fits said character. heck i bet people aren't aware a good 90% of boys in cartoons / anime are often voiced by females b/c they can reach the right voice were it sounds like a young boy, and not clearly a high age guy trying to be a young kid again.
I was more so insulted that WatchMojo described the great Paul Winchell just as a white actor. Was a great actor, ventriloquist, and invented an artificial heart
The entire point of the song savages was to show that both sides see each other as not human and think of each other as lesser creatures both showing that they view the other as different but from the audience perspective showing that they are more alike than they think they are.
Yeah the fact they didn't even show the other side. The whole point of the song is people vilify what they don't understand and or is different. The whole thing was intentional. Its an incredible example of explaining two sides of a conflict.
@@gageperuti5519 the characters were racist. I've never seen a problem with the song because it is what the characters are, NOT what the writers, directors, actors, studio or anyone else associated with the film are.
I watched all of these old films when I was a kid. At the height of the dictatorial Martial Rule here in my country, me and my fellow children cope by watching these films. As an Asian, I don't find these as "Racist" at all. The "We Are Siamese" and "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat" were some of the most wonderful songs we've heard especially the latter, which is very catchy. As for the Commando Duck, it was a propaganda film during WW2. Obviously the Anti-Japanese Sentiment during WW2 were rampant even after the war so can you really blame them? Do you really expect the US to put out something that puts their enemy in a good light? No, because it was a propaganda film during the WW2. Instead of hiding these films, they must be shown to the newer generations as a reminder of how far have we gotten as a society.
Maybe instead of burying these poorly-aged films, just put a disclaimer explaining that they're a product of their time and aren't meant to be offensive
Honestly, I agree with both statements here. Propaganda isn't meant to paint the "others" in a good light, even German films had their own that says that everyone was against them. I'm sure Italy and Japan had their own, too. Heck, if we're talking about other companies, Warner Brothers had their own barrage of propaganda as well. So, to bury it in general, like it never happened, is ludacris, in my opinion. It shows the mindset of the people at that time, the fears they all had, and honestly, the animation and how much it has improved over time. I also agree with at least putting a disclaimer at the beginning to say that these films were a product of their times and that they don't reflect on the views and opinions the company holds nowadays.
When did we become so fragile as a culture? How pitiful is it that seemingly everyone is hoping to be offended by everything, especially 20, 40, 70, 100 year old cartoons? And, King Louie??? Educate yourself about Louis Prima, the voice of King Louie.
Watchmojo virtue signaling and acting like they actually are shocked just to get some views while knowing NOTHING about what they complain about.. There's a reason this channel has been in a decline for years.
Recognising and calling out the racism in film and media from the past doesn't make anyone "fragile". Hardly anyone actually goes looking for stuff to be offended about either 🙄
Being upset by the Pocahontas song "Savages" is also utterly stupid and ignorant. They were portraying merciless racist colonialist, which is historically accurate, and in the movie they were always portrayed as being evil, ignorant, and greedy. So I don't see the issue there, unless people wanna deny history. Note: I'm not saying the entire movie was historically accurate, because it wasn't.
What I find interesting is the blatant one-sidedness of No. 10 “Savages” Pocahontas. The narrator goes on about how terribly offensive the lyrics are and how demeaning to the native Americans the whole song is, HOWEVER, cut out completely are all the parts where the opposite side (the Indians) are calling the exploring white people savages and how they are also barely even human. Intermixed with all the back and forth is a beautiful hopeful message about how Pocahontas is desperately trying to save John Smith and overcome all the hate that has befallen both sides. I am not one to usually comment on such clips but when there is such a blatant attempt at making something sound and seem racist, I find myself compelled to speak up. Also, for arguments sake, if the song is all the things purported to be, it certainly was true of both sides not just the “evil white people” as the message tries to convey here.
Exactly, the song is about how both sides refuse to look past their assumptions and prejudice, it’s reflective of their fears/motivations to fight. It was a stupid choice to put it on the list 🤦♀️
Exactly. Straight after the settlers sing the line they showed here, they cut to the Native Americans saying almost the EXACT. SAME. THING about the settlers. Isn't that one of the central parts of Pocahontas, questioning who the real "savages" are, and emphasising how a different culture does not make a different species.
Here's the second verse, sung by the Powhatans: This is what we feared The paleface is a demon The only thing they feel at all is greed Beneath that milky hide There's emptiness inside I wonder if they even bleed They're savages! Savages! Barely even human Savages! Savages! Killers at the core They're different from us Which means they can't be trusted We must sound the drums of war
I get a lot of these entries but never quiet got why people hate the Siamese cats in the Lady and the Tramp. My family is part thai and never heard anyone complain about the movie and known thai people who like it. The country was known as Siam for a long time and ironically enough changed its name to Thailand due indirectly to colonialism/imperialism: they wanted to modernize the country and that meant emulating the West and the King of Siam saw that a lot of western countries followed the Germanic tradition of calling your country ___land like EngLAND, DeutschLAND, ScotLAND so he called the country Thailand but the name Siam and Siamese were commonly used for a long time before that and the names were still in common use afterwards. Siamese cats are a symbol of Thailand and Siamese twins were too. For the 1950s it wasnt bad at all and even by todays standards it's not that offensive so much as it relies on NOW tired stereotypes, but stereotypes wear out with age and the movie is nearly 70 years old so of course parts of it arent going to age well but to be racist there usually needs to be some maliciousness or hatred.
I’m so sick of people commenting on how racist old films were when only certain scenes are picked out and criticized without giving full context of the time, setting, and cultural setting of the film. Guess what what happened then hasn’t stopped today. Why don’t you talk about current movies that are racist today because that’s the standard we as viewers have today. Don’t judge the past learn from it.
I watched that movie in theather when I was a kid, watched it again a couple of years ago. I think finding something offensive with the hyenas is just making a storm out of a glass of water. The only controversy so far that I remember about that movie is a scene in which dust from Simba´s paw forms a word and some people say it spells S F X and others say it spells S E X.
Speaking as someone from outside the US, I believe that perceived racism is a lot worse than racism itself. Perceived racism takes away from the real issues facing everyone today. This video, except for a few genuine examples, shows a lot of perceived racism where none exists.
Exactly, my friend. Your words are wise. These Watchmojo videos also try to make us believe that the old movies were racists. But what about the new Disney movies? Do they know that replacing a white character with a black or latino character in a remake of a classic movie is also racism? This is exactly what they did with Cinderella's fairie in the live-action movie, and more recently with Ariel in The Little Mermaid live-action movie. So yeah, the idiots behind these videos are BAD.
@@m.lanzoni9306 yes, I understand inclusion but that is taking it too far. I live in a mostly mono racial society so it is understandable when my kids were in a school play they would have to use non white children to play a white character. However that should not be done in a racially diverse nation such as the US.
Allot of people don't know that Pocahontas was voiced by an actual Native American woman, Irene Bedard ... Sadly she has had a rough life after the film, but I think the importance of her being cast is highly underrated.. Disney could have easily hired a white woman to voice Pocahontas but instead gave it to a relatively unknown Native American actress. Even if the script was super fabricated, I respect Disney for doing that.
The Lion King is a stretch. This is just someone on a fucking power trip trying to find any reason to call Disney out as racist (which they definitely were at one point) Think about it, we’re just going to ignore James Earl Jones’ part as Mufasa, Rafiki - Robert Guillaume, Sarabi - Midge Sinclair, Young Nala - Niketa Harris, and fucking Nathan Lane as Timon. This is inclusion at its finest, not a poor depiction of minority stereotypes because of the nationality of their voice actors/actresses.
So, the inclusion of the Lion King nullifies the entire list and is someone on a power-trip, when you agree that they were once racist? Then, what gives?

Yeah. They didn't mock Germans as a whole like the anti Japanese shorts did, they were very clearly mocking the regime. Hans was actually portraying the average life for a German, specifically a kid, living in a dictatorship . Unlike most propaganda shorts which are literally just bigoted, Education for Death handles Germany and war with respect and grace. Handles it in a way where we show that the people living under the governments rule were just as valid to be considered victims

Way to stir up the racist pot WatchMojo. I remember enjoying most of these classics as a kid. Maybe my parents thought it was racist back then. Not sure, because I was raised to treat people the way I want to be treated. Racism is a thing unfortunately, and that's all anyone seems to really care about nowadays. "You want to end racism, stop talking about it." - Morgan Freeman.
Honestly, half of these aren't nearly as bad as they're made out to be, and a good bit of the other half I still like watching like the native Americans from Peter Pan with the catchiest song (granted can feel a bit collar tugging at one or two moments.) and the crows from Dumbo who taught him how to fly.
Yes, the crows were a bit insensitive and rude, but they actually encouraged Dumbo. He wouldn't even try to fly until they gave him a "magic" feather to give him confidence.
But when stereotypes are used to ridicule groups of people then it is racist. When it’s meant as mockery, to laugh at (not with), not as an homage or even satire.
@@TalentCaldwell the point is stereotypes exist. Pointing out a stereotype is not racist. To be honest people in this day and age can find something anything wrong within a movie and call it racist all because they both think way too deeply about it and they don’t know the background stuff to what’s going on on screen. Like The Lion King who on earth watches the movie and thinks about the movie making fun of lower class citizens due to the hyenas? What if the actors were just picked for the hyenas because they were perfect for the job? Mufasa is voiced by James Earl Jones and he is king of Pride Rock and we all know that he is voiced by a black person. So what does that say right there huh? Same thing goes for King Louie in The Jungle Book. The way the character acts is part of the character and nothing to do with racism! As for that Peter Pan song, What Makes the Red Man Red? Believe it or not it actually is honorable to the Native Americans because they love to talk about folk tales of how things came to be and that’s what the song was intended for. Not to mention but I understand that not every person does what their stereotypes claim that they do. Yet obviously some people in their own culture like the Native Americans or Asian people or black people could be doing those stereotype things and they have to be portrayed like that on screen. Can’t they just make fun of themselves? That even goes for the Siamese cats in Lady and the Tramp and that one Siamese cat in The Aristocats. Besides Siamese cats actually look like that anyways? Also what’s wrong with the Blackfish in The Little Mermaid? Those lips are gorgeous lips and are absolutely nothing compared to the racist stuff that the 1930’s and 1940’s Disney used to do! Also what if the blackfish does look like that in real life in a way huh? Oh and isn’t Savages supposed to be offensive to drive home how the settlers felt about the Native Americans? Not to mention but the Native Americans talked bad about the settlers too. So what are white people the villains because they rule everything? White people can have racism against them too! I get that it could be hard to listen too but Disney had to do what they had to do to follow history. We can’t hide from history forever after all. It’s even one of my favorite climax songs of all time as well. People especially WatchMojo annoy me to death sometimes, I swear to God.😒
All u do is comment essays on their videos get a life kid. U point out a handful of weak counter points when %80 of this is clearly racist stereotypes made for kids. The point is Disney isnt going to make content reminding us of their past and its nice to see that they are still mirroring our society today. They just choose to make profits of off the culture of their respective society. Disney gets away with being racist if as a society we deem it okay. Disney gets We dont get anything tho just mediocre slop driveled into our laps
Hey! Im native, don’t call our beliefs folk tales! Thats like calling Christians story tellers. It’s just not nice. We aren’t know for folk tales nor are we known too tell them. Disney has done a lot of racist stuff in its time. Ignoring the things people nit pic in movies the way they displayed black/native people especially are heartbreaking. Saying they needed too do what they needed to do for there time period is crazy knowing alot of other networks never have had a history of anything like this. Tho they don’t do this anymore and shouldn’t be made too feel shame 70-100 years later when the new owners of Disney weren’t even alive yet it’s still good to spread awareness on why things like these aren’t depicted today. About your point about you saying white people always being portrayed as villains. You’re right, they were, because at that time they were the villains. They were at the top of the food chain so talking about a short video made from that time period depicting that time period it’s only right to pick it apart as it was written in that time period. White people aren’t villains anymore nor have they been for the last 30-40 years nor should they be treated like it, it still should be talked about as white people being on top of the hierarchy just for being white is an important part of history and as it being apart of history, it was also displayed in cartoons of that time period.
Also! Your part about the natives the red man. Red man was a term used too describe natives long ago. Which is a hateful statement. Also in this song the chief (which is very sacred in indigenous culture) is seen giving Peter Pan a feather hat, which are EARNED over years and years of proving yourself. That’s like calling someone a priest for reading the Bible once. Everything depicted in that part of the movie is incredibly under studied. I care. its the same company profiting off of whatever is acceptable. Gues what dude ppl didnt like it back then and they dont like it now. Now that the general population have more of a voice over the years obviously racism is not okay. Doesnt make it okay to erase it and not make videos talking a out it actually happening when Disney has never had to say sorry or talk about of these issues.
It also helps to keep in mind When each of these pieces were released. While they may be seen as offensive today, it helps to remember that they are caricature. The Siamese Cat from Aristocats is one of my favorites from Scat Cat's gang.
I think it's more the ones we never saw, like Cannibal Capers. What's with those cannibals dancing with skulls of their food? They don't even look like real people. At least Trader Mickey made the cannibals appropriately proportioned, even if their lips were still offensive.
same with Shung Gong in The Aristocats- I think what they were trying to show is no natter who you are or where you come from, you're welcome here, and 'Ev'rybody wants to be a cat' :) This movie has been out for how long now? and absolutely nobody pre 2020 had any problem with it, well exact for maybe those 10 ppl on Twitter who had never SEEN the damn movie...

I wonder if they would be as offensive to the people who actually live in the countries the movies take place in. Most of them don't even take place in America but are offensive to Americans for some reason.
As a german I can say, that the Nazi Film doesn't offend me at all. It's interesting to see how my grandparents had been seen by americans and it's a reminder of this dark age. If we forget the past we are doomed to repeat it.
@@moprazavi3951 Also, it's American war propaganda afraid of Nazi youth. It's a product of its times. And Americans had reason to be afraid of a country whose leader thought the best things in life were bombing others and killing and torturing people because they were born into some race they didn't think was right.
I'm a firm believer in looking at the context of when something was made. Not everything done was for the purpose of mockery or to be prejudiced. I also think things are more nuanced. While stereotypes may be harmful, depending on how they are used, they aren't necessarily racist. We live in a world where far too many people seek to be perpetually offended. I get where one should probably call out racism when it happens today, but getting upset about a product of its time that was mostly innocuous is just exhausting.
and were done during a very different time of history. sure they aged about as well as milk in the hot summer sun, but disney has learned from them.. to a degree i guess.
If I am remembering correctly about the movie Pocahontas, didn’t the song “Savages” also feature a segment of the Powhatans singing that the English settlers were savages from their point of view? I thought the whole point of the song-and the whole movie-was to show audiences that the term “savage”has always been a matter of cultural perspective, and that the only way we’ll get along as humans is if we begin to look past racial and ethic differences and see one another as fellow human beings.
Is this why Disney made those god-awful live-action reboots of their classic movies in the first place ? Seriously this politically correct nonsense has to be stopped !!!
James Baskett won an honorary Academy Award for his portrayal of Uncle Remus, and The Uncle Remus stories were written by Joel C. The story of Song of the South is about a now Fatherless child needing guidance. He finds it with Remus, which his mother disapproves of. In the end, she accepts Remus as being good for her son
Here's a thought: you think of these moments as racist, and some pretty much are. But, a more accurate description would be that they're products of the time periods in which they were made that didn't age well.
It is called Presentism where people judge the past with the mindsets and beliefs we have today. In the future, this era will also be critisized for what they might see as offensive (in the future) and we don't (in the present).
I don't think we've pushed past all this at all. Feels worse than ever. Picking shit apart like Disney movies while their are real life cops shooting real life black people. While there's a real life drug war locking up a real 25% of the worlds prison population or there's real life billionaires living in the same city as tent cities. Seems like all these kinda things are just around to get people to argue instead of band together.
@@Prof.Pwnalot i think the hundreds of other comments saying some of these are not offensive will suffice. Offense is not what subtle messaging transferred through kids content creates. I just watched all 60 Disney Classics last month and noticed something else. There is not a single human black character (non-animal) in any of the films until Fantasia 2000 (1999). There's the black muses that sing as a Greek chorus in Hercules but you don't get a black human character with dialog until Atlantis.
I get the feeling that there will come a time when everything will be offensive, given how easily offended people nowadays can get over every little thing.
You can rest easy-it looks like drunk cartoon characters will NEVER be offensive to anyone. There was no backlash when "Tangled" came out and showing that short old man who was drunk all time, and there was no backlash when the same drunk old man appeared as ac regular character on "Tangled the Series".
I wonder what cultures will say about us and 500 years when they look back at the art we made or the stories we told and be able to pick apart every wrong little thing with it and talk about how bad and horrible we are. Can't look at the past through the prism of today two completely different things
It is the way that older cartoons singled out specific ethnicities that is considered a problem; it is always non-white people who are portrayed as "inferior" and this is a reflection of the prevalent racism back then. The reason why a show like "South Park" gets away with those things is because that show makes fun of _everyone,_ and it also typically makes it clear that the bad guys are the ones who lose and make fools of themselves, and it even frequently _criticises_ and _mocks_ things such as racism and sexism etc. Heck, the reason why the disabled character Timmy was allowed to be introduced into the show was because Trey and Matt insisted that they wanted to treat him as an equal among the other characters.
i never once thought of the Hyenas as caricatures of black and Hispanic people, i only found out much later that they were voiced by Whoopi Goldberg and Cheech Marin, and i loved them for it. the live action counterparts of the hyenas were so boring even though they were more accurate in the depiction of the animal. as for the Little Mermaid, i think the live-action remake has a far bigger problem than a 5 second clip of a singing blackfish.
The problem are not the cartoons, the problem is what you have in your mind thinking that everything us offensive, like this video that is hilariously offensive.

‘Savages’ did have obviously racist lyrics but that was kind of the point - they’re demonstrating xenophobia on BOTH sides based on their fears & ignorance & given the time period of the film is pretty accurate to how the colonists would have reacted to Native American tribes. So given the context of the film, I wouldn’t call it inappropriate as it’s demonstrating the evils of racism (at least that’s what I got from it)
I was just thinking that. Savages is MEANT to be racist to demonstrate the reality of what happened

@@Itachi-uq2mu This large word salad full of nonsense and gaslighting was completely pointless. Wtf is up with people telling others how to feel?
Seems we're stretching on some of these. "Savages" was sung by both sides, yet the video shows only the settlers singing it. If the hyenas in Lion King were problematic, I'm sure Whoopi and Cheech would've said something.
That’s what I was thinking!
There is always this onsidedness to most media today.

The crows in Dumbo? At a time when films were banned in the South because White and Black actors were on film as equals, Disney cast 4 very talented Black singers as the Crows ( including Scatman Cruthers).

Oh thank you! You made me feel so much better about my favorite films! God bless you!🙏🏻😇
I agree, that whole "color characters should only be voiced by people of the same color so it won't be racist" thing is bulls**t.
The entire point of the song savages was to show that both sides see each other as not human and think of each other as lesser creatures both showing that they view the other as different but from the audience perspective showing that they are more alike than they think they are.
Yeah, I think the point went completely over Watch Mojo's heads.
Yeah the fact they didn't even show the other side.
The whole point of the song is people vilify what they don't understand and or is different. The whole thing was intentional.
Its an incredible example of explaining two sides of a conflict.
Exactly. The song is racist by design. The offensive nature is literally the point.

1. you're full of it and 2. racist caricatures are racist despite your own feelings

Ok, LOCOKRAZY.
Or maybe you are looking not hard enough, this kind of stuff gets into peoples subconscious and teaches them racist ideas
@@alexella9689 the hyenas are literally just being silly... Are we now going to look at every character voiced by a non white person???
Watch mojo has definitely seemed left leaning to me lately based on their assessment of certain topics in videos
Exactly. Straight after the settlers sing the line they showed here, they cut to the Native Americans saying almost the EXACT. SAME. THING about the settlers. Isn't that one of the central parts of Pocahontas, questioning who the real "savages" are, and emphasising how a different culture does not make a different species.
Here's the second verse, sung by the Powhatans:
This is what we feared
The paleface is a demon
The only thing they feel at all is greed
Beneath that milky hide
There's emptiness inside
I wonder if they even bleed
They're savages! Savages!
Barely even human
Savages! Savages!

They're different from us
Which means they can't be trusted
We must sound the drums of war

Exactly, my friend. Your words are wise. These Watchmojo videos also try to make us believe that the old movies were racists.
But what about the new Disney movies? Do they know that replacing a white character with a black or latino character in a remake of a classic movie is also racism? @@mastersnet18 Indeed.
Allot of people don't know that Pocahontas was voiced by an actual Native American woman, Irene Bedard ... Sadly she has had a rough life after the film, but I think the importance of her being cast is highly underrated.. Even if the script was super fabricated, I respect Disney for doing that.
The Lion King is a stretch. This is just someone on a fucking power trip trying to find any reason to call Disney out as racist (which they definitely were at one point)

Telling people to be offended by cartoons is in itself offensive.

If you want too appreciate indigenous people in a movie don’t use stereotypes as your main source of information.

Exactly. It's just like someone saying this video is racist because it has racist clips featured in it. 🤦🤦♀️🤦♂️
You right
Also worth noting how watchmojo include it in top villain song countdowns.
@@adamlennard1828 🫢
You can find fault with any movie when using today’s “standards”😊
Watchmojo virtue signaling and acting like they actually are shocked just to get some views while knowing NOTHING about what they complain about..
There's a reason this channel has been in a decline for years.
@@recht_voor_zijn_raap5506 "Virtue signaling"?
"...knowing NOTHING about what they complain about..." They only made _two videos_ on this subject.

Went through hundreds if not thousands after i move on and u will probably be the only person who sounds like they function properly
Savages is a banger of a song tho. The Native Americans also have counter lines too so it's not just one sided. It's a shame ppl too soft these days
I remember watching The AristoCats as a kid and, looking back, Shun Gon playing the piano with chopsticks is utterly hilarious - "Chopsticks" is a common piece that kids learn during piano lessons
and I recently watched "Peter Pan" and couldn't stop laughing during "What Made the Red Man Red"!
I don't know why we can't just watch a movie without thinking someone did something to be mean. ✌️💙🏴
Wtf im baffled how everyone thinks this okay to do on disneys part 💀
i’m just laughing because a lot of these aren’t racist😂
There's actually an old Joe Rogan clip when even he, someone who unironically uses the word SJW as an insult said that the Peter Pan stuff was racist. Now, your an SJW if you say that the Peter Pan stuff was racist
I agree, the narrator of Moyo is stretching it.
Uncle Remus was not a racist character, nor was the movie Song of South racist. I'm sick of hearing this b.s. Uncle Remus was the hero of the movie.
North American being north American looking for excuses to get offended by everything even for things thst don't affect them or related to them
It's because here in the U.S. folks can't wait to be offended on someone else's behalf.
@@moprazavi3951 Also, it's American war propaganda afraid of Nazi youth. It's a product of its times. And Americans had reason to be afraid of a country whose leader thought the best things in life were bombing others and killing and torturing people because they were born into some race they didn't think was right.
“The Disney landlord of your intellectual property. So get back to work, that’s my dime you’re wasting.” Walt Disney
3:12 The black fish in the little mermaid wasn't something racist, they were just representing a black singer, but the rest, big oof
I think it’s racist if someone actually thinks that image is racist.
WatchMojo is projecting. They are racist for that one
Some of these are hardly racist. More stereotypes
But they must bait us since they're likely running out of material. If we've forgotten, why remind us?
and were done during a very different time of history. sure they aged about as well as milk in the hot summer sun, but disney has learned from them.. to a degree i guess.
Stereotypes based on racism. How is that unclear??
You know stereotypes can be racist, right?
@@johncrigger4694 you do know that Watchmojo dont actually create the lists themselves right? its voted for on their website by viewers?
If I am remembering correctly about the movie Pocahontas, didn’t the song “Savages” also feature a segment of the Powhatans singing that the English settlers were savages from their point of view? I thought the whole point of the song-and the whole movie-was to show audiences that the term “savage”has always been a matter of cultural perspective, and that the only way we’ll get along as humans is if we begin to look past racial and ethic differences and see one another as fellow human beings.
You are completely correct.
Is this why Disney made those god-awful live-action reboots of their classic movies in the first place ? Seriously this politically correct nonsense has to be stopped !!!
Totally. I'd love to see a cartoon that basically gives P.C. culture the middle finger.
No they're making the live action remakes as to not lose the rights to the original content.
Thank you
I know right? Feels like they went from not being PC to ultra PC lol 😂
@@TMRaven Original content ? They are from the public domain !
James Baskett won an honorary Academy Award for his portrayal of Uncle Remus, and The Uncle Remus stories were written by Joel C. Harris who was very deeply involved in acknowledging Af-Am people's struggles during and after slavery in the South. Harris worked avidly toward reconciliation between the races during the post-Civil War reconstruction.

Which is still racist.

there's... not much wrong with some of these, it was just how things were portrayed back then and it shows how society has pushed past this.
It is called Presentism where people judge the past with the mindsets and beliefs we have today. In the future, this era will also be critisized for what they might see as offensive (in the future) and we don't (in the present).
@@ArnoSnyman007 i find none of it offsive just views of it's time and truth in comedy
Nah, comedy is still alive, we as a society are gunna keep offending.
It is a predatory tool. I wasn’t offended when watching the movies either but i still understand how stereotypes can do more harm than good.
Isn't that already a thing right now ? Basically right now
@@juliancaraveo5700 If people don't fight back,it will only get worse.
U have no content privacy settings to the max go away now off into the void of tumbleweeds that have nothing to say
Any body upset by a 1930's cartoon has a serious problem
It is the way that older cartoons singled out specific ethnicities that is considered a problem;
it is always non-white people who are portrayed as "inferior" and this is a reflection of the prevalent racism back then.
No matter how diverse they try to appear now
It will never be enough
The problem are not the cartoons, the problem is what you have in your mind thinking that everything us offensive, like this video that is hilariously offensive.
