Imagine being Warner Bros., turning down Home Alone, watching it stay in the top spot of the box office for 12 weeks into the next year and then seeing what you’ve chosen to make instead falter as it happens. You at WB chose to make a movie like Nothing But Trouble and then watched it fail hard while Fox rolled in the dough with Home Alone. A true “kicking myself” moment right there.
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was one of the first movies I thought of. I remember seeing posters for it and saying "This looks dumb." But, I went with a friend on opening night and was surprised how funny it was.
'Heartbreakers' should definitely be on this list. It's so criminally underrated. Nobody expected a movie with dramatic actors like Sigourney Weaver, Gene Hackman, Ray Liotta etc. to be so funny.
Nailed it with that comment, went into it expecting nothing, have watched it multiple times now and its always fun. Finding out it was based on a true story was the cherry on top
I literally was saying this to myself while watching the list. I remember when it came out thinking it would be so stupid but it’s one of my favorites now!
I remember streaming it and immediately wanting to watch it again. It's rare that a movie makes me laugh out loud as much as it did. The part where he's drunk and falls down the hill and discovers a dead body is solid gold - just after jumping into a swimming pool to "question the mermaids". 😂
I remember wanting my brother to watch Mean Girls and Legally Blonde with me, and he initially refused, thinking that they'd be "Too Girly." He ended up being pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoyed them.
I agree with the assessment that it's great, but I don't think it actually did well when it came out. Cult classic. This is why I wouldn't put The Big Lebowski on this list. No one thought it would be good and it didn't do well, even though it's an amazing film and is widely recognized today.
I had no idea Eurotrip was going to be as funny as it was. I figured I'd probably chuckle here and there, but I laughed out loud near constantly with that film. One of my favorite teen angst/coming-of-age comedy films. Can't believe you didn't mention it.
No movie has disappointed me and made me pleasantly surprised more than The Other Guys. I had no idea about the "aim for the bushes" scene, so I was disappointed Rock and Jackson didn't stay in the movie long. But it turned it to be a hilarious movie.
Big Trouble in Little China, A Fish Called Wanda, Being There, Rush Hour, Monty Python's Holy Grail, The Gods must be Crazy, Shaun of the Dead - These were excellent comedy films.
But a film by Monty Python was bound to be funny, that’s why it wouldn’t have made the list, the same with A Fish Called Wanda, starring so many of the core Python actors. Gods must be crazy has not aged well
'The Gods Must Be Crazy' is exactly what this list should've had. But it's clearly promoting either a studio's catalog or an agency of some sort. Funny what commercials look like nowadays.
We’re The Millers, Black Dynamite, Scary Movie 2, CHIP’s, Beerfest, Super Troopers 1 & 2, and White Chicks would be on my list. I had low expectations of these movies but they pleasantly surprised me.
40-Year Old Virgin, I was working at a movie theater at the time. I told my manager that the movie would be popular. Steve Carrell had been popular somewhat from his role in Anchorman. And at that time, sex comedies did really well in theaters (for being rated 'R'). Wedding Crashers a few weeks earlier did really well. Both times, I debated with my manager about how we needed them in bigger theaters because they were going to be hits. Both times I was right, and the movies were both good.
Tropic Thunder was one of my favorite movies in 2008. This movie, along with Iron Man, made me fall head over heels in love with Robert Downey Jr. And yes, blackface is so politically incorrect to do in movies now, but Ben Stillers direction and writing contribution helped balance the over the top satire of Downey’s character. Hell, the dude was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this role. I just really glad he didn’t win, because all hell would have broke loose in the Black community if he did!!! Bruh!!! All in all, it’s a great film. You have to watch it. Bonus tip, watch the extended version. Way more funnier scenes included.
He wasn’t playing a black character. He was playing a white method actor who does blackface to play a black character and gets made fun of for it. To me, him being the butt of the joke and them having a black character call him out multiple times in the movie makes it more like them mocking blackface rather than actually doing blackface in a serious way.
I thought the movie was a stupid, pathetic cash grab. Nothing more than an overly produced commercial. Boy was I happy to be COMPLETELY wrong. I now own the first one and the sequel. Both are amazing.
I made fun of a friend in college because he loved it so much. When I finally watched it I apologized because it really is so funny😂 just thinking of Jonah Hill saying “uh. Hello neighbor” to Channing Tatum when they get locked up makes me laugh.
I'm honestly surprised Zoolander didn't make the list. A comedy about male models and conspiracy theories? I wasn't expecting much, but ended up enjoying far more than I could imagine.
Say what!?!?! Not only was Austin Powers not number one on your list, but you completely left it off? No one was interested in that movie, but as word of mouth about the movie spread, it became a must-rent film, and when the sequel came out, it made more money on the first day than the original did in its entire time in theaters.
I feel bad that I forgot about Austin Powers, but that would be good on my list of that like movies that bombed at the box office but then like found an audience later
@@Jaykae-pf6tm I actually just watched the movie two weeks ago. It was the first time I watched it in like... 20 years... Galaxy Quest is a grossly underrated film. Superbly cast, fantastic script and, like the Brady Bunch movies, it was a gentle piss take while paying homage to fans of Sci Fi.
You left out the biggest reason why 21 Jump Street was such a surprisingly good comedy: the show it was based off of was not a comedy. It was a show with a flimsy premise that mostly played it straight. That it was able to be converted into a campy comedy was a huge surprise. It’s the equivalent of following up the Tim Burton Batman movies with the Adam West show.
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the strangest movies and I couldn’t get it the first time I saw it, but it sticks with you and it has this ridiculous charm ya can’t resist.

Keaton just KILLED it in Beetlejuice. When that came out I took a girl on one of our first dates to it and we laughed so hard I nearly puked in the popcorn and she almost peed herself.
On the last two days of school, I borrowed my brother's Napoleon Dynamite movie. I hadn't seen it, but turned it on for students if they wanted to watch. I had 4 classes throughout the day, and I watched the first half 4 times, and the next day, I watched the second half of the video for 4 class periods. The more I watched It , the more I laughed. It just got funnier and funnier the more I watched it. Just seeing the clip made me laugh again. I love the movie.

Fun facts about Beetlejuice. 1. Sammy Davis Jr. Was the original choice for Beetlejuice. But Tim Burton liked Michael Keaton's audition more, that's why he got the part. 2. Before Winona Ryder, other women auditioned for the role of Delia Deetz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Brooke Shields, Lori Loughlin, Diane Lane, Justine Bateman, Molly Ringwald, Juliette Lewis, and Jennifer Connelly and Alyssa Milano. Anjelica Huston was cast as Delia Deetz, but she got sick, and had to drop out. And that's the story of how Winona Ryder got the role of Delia Deetz. Enough said.
Thanks to this video, I learned something. I can't see the difference between the real thing and the fake one, so I just buy the fake one. But if you want to buy it in the future, it is better to invest in the real thing. But now I am still considering buying a fake one within the budget. I have been waiting for kislux for a long time.
I’d never even heard of The Other Guys when I stumbled across it on Netflix one day and, bored, decided to give it a shot. I am SO glad I did! I legit cried laughing during that film. I have no idea why it isn’t more widely known and appreciated, though I’m selfishly kind of glad as it was such an awesome surprise! If you haven’t seen it then definitely give it a go, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed 🙂
Here's one that doesn't get mentioned a lot... or at all: Grown ups 2. It kinda surprised me cause usually sequels suck... but this one had me cackling from the first few minutes and it kept on for the rest of the movie... aaahhh the era when child actors still could act, and people weren't being too sensitive about some jokes... now that thing would get uber cancelled. And as for this list... I agree with most of it.. Tropic Thunder is the only movie with Tom cruise in it that I like.
I genuinely thought all these movies where going to be funny before I watched them or why would I even try and watch them but none the less all these movies where funny af and im thankful for all of them .
I am honest Naked Gun is perfect comedy that works all around the world like as a Brit some American comedies don’t make me even crack a smile but Leslie Nielsen is one of the best!

Man I might be on my own with this one but I didn’t think Superbad was that funny! There are funny moments. Might have to rewatch that one
Game Night was a big surprise for me, as was Horrible Bosses
Keaton just KILLED it in Beetlejuice. When that came out I took a girl on one of our first dates to it and we laughed so hard I nearly puked in the popcorn and she almost peed herself.
Game night had me laughing throughout the entire movie.
Good list. Kung Pow was very funny...Call me Betty 😂
Love it!!! Only 4 of these I had never seen.
The Nice Guys is incredibly underrated and a fantastic watch
On the last two days of school, I borrowed my brother's Napoleon Dynamite movie. I hadn't seen it, but turned it on for students if they wanted to watch. I had 4 classes throughout the day, and I watched the first half 4 times, and the next day, I watched the second half of the video for 4 class periods. The more I watched It , the more I laughed. It just got funnier and funnier the more I watched it. Just seeing the clip made me laugh again. I love the movie.
How is My Big Fat Greek Wedding NOT on this list?
agree, i was so surprised by that one :)
I’m sure it’ll be on this list’s sequel “Another Top 30 Comedy Movies NO ONE Expected To Be Good”!
Nah I expected Tropic Thunder to be good. I did not expect it to be outstanding
Nobody saw that coming
So glad you put Napoleon Dynamite so high. One of my favorite movies of all time. Will be doing a Napoleon Tour in Preston, ID this summer.
That movie sucks
Game Night is so good 😂

Cmon everyone expected deadpool to be good
Fun facts about Beetlejuice.
Sammy Davis Jr?? Wow that is unexpected. Also LOL @ Angelica Houston playing a teenage girl when she was in her late 30’s!
Thanks to this video, I learned something. I can't see the difference between the real thing and the fake one, so I just buy the fake one. But if you want to buy it in the future, it is better to invest in the real thing. But now I am still considering buying a fake one within the budget. I have been waiting for kislux for a long time.
Pineapple Express & Knocked up could easily be up there too.
I can't believe home alone is on this list
I’d never even heard of The Other Guys when I stumbled across it on Netflix one day and, bored, decided to give it a shot. I am SO glad I did! I legit cried laughing during that film. I have no idea why it isn’t more widely known and appreciated, though I’m selfishly kind of glad as it was such an awesome surprise! If you haven’t seen it then definitely give it a go, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed 🙂
Deadpool was I movie I expected it to be: funny and violent
What I didn't expect: Wade Wilson kissing the pizza guy
Here's one that doesn't get mentioned a lot... or at all: Grown ups 2. It kinda surprised me cause usually sequels suck... but this one had me cackling from the first few minutes and it kept on for the rest of the movie... aaahhh the era when child actors still could act, and people weren't being too sensitive about some jokes... now that thing would get uber cancelled. And as for this list... I agree with most of it.. Tropic Thunder is the only movie with Tom cruise in it that I like.
I was expecting Barbie to make the list, at number one even. Who would ever expect a comedy about Barbie to be that funny and good?
It wasn’t. Are you high?
Everyone expected it. It was the most hyped movie of the year.
@@maestroh2986 This. Not to mention that no one expects a Ryan Gosling - Margot Robbie to not do well.
Tropic thunder for me is the best unexpected great comedy movie
How is Office Space not on this list? Wasn't that movie a bit of a bomb initially?
I genuinely thought all these movies where going to be funny before I watched them or why would I even try and watch them but none the less all these movies where funny af and im thankful for all of them .
Hangover is gold
Omg Spy needs a sequel!!!😊
I loved the Nice Guys.
I am honest Naked Gun is perfect comedy that works all around the world like as a Brit some American comedies don’t make me even crack a smile but Leslie Nielsen is one of the best!
