Imagine being Warner Bros., turning down Home Alone, watching it stay in the top spot of the box office for 12 weeks into the next year and then seeing what you’ve chosen to make instead falter as it happens. You at WB chose to make a movie like Nothing But Trouble and then watched it fail hard while Fox rolled in the dough with Home Alone. A true “kicking myself” moment right there.
Tropic Thunder has no right being as good as it is. Underrated classic.

Nailed it with that comment, went into it expecting nothing, have watched it multiple times now and its always fun. Finding out it was based on a true story was the cherry on top
I remember wanting my brother to watch Mean Girls and Legally Blonde with me, and he initially refused, thinking that they'd be "Too Girly." He ended up being pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoyed them.
I honestly think every teenage boy should see Mean Girls 😄 it's funny, nasty and spot on
I mean, they are and they're not all of us cup of tea, but that doesn't make them any less of a good movie.
Exactly the thought I had. Watched it about 10 years after it was released and it's one of my all time favourite movies now.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was one of the first movies I thought of. I remember seeing posters for it and saying "This looks dumb." But, I went with a friend on opening night and was surprised how funny it was.

No movie has disappointed me and made me pleasantly surprised more than The Other Guys.
I had no idea about the "aim for the bushes" scene, so I was disappointed Rock and Jackson didn't stay in the movie long. But it turned it to be a hilarious movie.
They should do a spinoff of that scene.
Not to mention the ‘they’re not all 1st round picks’ scene when describing his hot wife 😅

'Heartbreakers' should definitely be on this list. It's so criminally underrated. Nobody expected a movie with dramatic actors like Sigourney Weaver, Gene Hackman, Ray Liotta etc. to be so funny.
Jennifer Love Hewitt was so hot in that movie.

Tropic Thunder & Walk Hard are the two that blew me away as being so much funnier than expected
I had no idea Eurotrip was going to be as funny as it was. I figured I'd probably chuckle here and there, but I laughed out loud near constantly with that film. One of my favorite teen angst/coming-of-age comedy films.
Can't believe you didn't mention it.
The robot performing fight set to "Two Tribes" is iconic.

NO ONE thought Airplane! would be any good...until people went and saw the movie and laughed their butts off. And it still is funny 44 years later.
The Nice Guys is an underrated masterpiece and Ryan Gosling is superb making comedy.
I remember streaming it and immediately wanting to watch it again. It's rare that a movie makes me laugh out loud as much as it did. The part where he's drunk and falls down the hill and discovers a dead body is solid gold - just after jumping into a swimming pool to "question the mermaids". 😂

Blockers surprised me so much! We went and saw it with little expectations and fell in love with the cast

The Heartbreak Kid was surprisingly hilarious too
I agree with the assessment that it's great, but I don't think it actually did well when it came out. Cult classic. This is why I wouldn't put The Big Lebowski on this list. No one thought it would be good and it didn't do well, even though it's an amazing film and is widely recognized today.

I went to see Game Night on a whim when I was subscribed to MoviePass. I was constantly surprised by how good it was and hope more people watch it.
I told everyone I knew, like 8 whole people, that Game Night was amazing.

Hot Tub Time Machine, Horrible Bosses, The Other Guys, Neighbors & 21 Jump Street Surprised Me.
What about "A Christmas Story"? Nobody thought a nostalgic family comedy by the director of "Black Christmas" and "Porky's" would appeal to anybody.
You need to make top 50 underrated films and add Grandmas Boy and Dodgeball plus Old School.
Big Trouble in Little China, A Fish Called Wanda, Being There, Rush Hour, Monty Python's Holy Grail, The Gods must be Crazy, Shaun of the Dead - These were excellent comedy films.
But a film by Monty Python was bound to be funny, that’s why it wouldn’t have made the list, the same with A Fish Called Wanda, starring so many of the core Python actors.

Tropic Thunder was one of my favorite movies in 2008. This movie, along with Iron Man, made me fall head over heels in love with Robert Downey Jr. And yes, blackface is so politically incorrect to do in movies now, but Ben Stillers direction and writing contribution helped balance the over the top satire of Downey’s character. Hell, the dude was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this role. I just really glad he didn’t win, because all hell would have broke loose in the Black community if he did!!! Bruh!!! All in all, it’s a great film. You have to watch it. Bonus tip, watch the extended version. Way more funnier scenes included.
I gotta be honest, RDJ was so good in that film that I kept forgetting it was him.

Say what!?!?! Not only was Austin Powers not number one on your list, but you completely left it off? No one was interested in that movie, but as word of mouth about the movie spread, it became a must-rent film, and when the sequel came out, it made more money on the first day than the original did in its entire time in theaters.

I feel bad that I forgot about Austin Powers, but that would be good on my list of that like movies that bombed at the box office but then like found an audience later
Where's The fantastic LEGO Movie? People thought it would be crap. It shocked almost everyone with its awesometudeness!!!
I thought the movie was a stupid, pathetic cash grab. Nothing more than an overly produced commercial. Boy was I happy to be COMPLETELY wrong. I now own the first one and the sequel. Both are amazing.

I made fun of a friend in college because he loved it so much. When I finally watched it I apologized because it really is so funny😂 just thinking of Jonah Hill saying “uh. Hello neighbor” to Channing Tatum when they get locked up makes me laugh.

Tropic Thunder shocked me…I went to the movie theatre with hell expectations and came out saying it was a classic

I watched mean girls for the first time this year and is it fair to say that it’s kind of a miracle how well it portrays what it wants to? Let alone how it became the endlessly quoteable phenomenon that it did?
Napoleon Dynamite is one of the strangest movies and I couldn’t get it the first time I saw it, but it sticks with you and it has this ridiculous charm ya can’t resist.
We’re The Millers, Black Dynamite, Scary Movie 2, CHIP’s, Beerfest, Super Troopers 1 & 2, and White Chicks would be on my list. I had low expectations of these movies but they pleasantly surprised me.
Game Night was a big surprise for me, as was Horrible Bosses

If you didnt think Deadpool would be funny you don't know Ryan Reynolds. The character was like made for him. It's just his personality multiplied.

The Nice Guys at #19 is criminal. This is a perfect movie all around not just a good funny comedy.

40-Year Old Virgin, I was working at a movie theater at the time. I told my manager that the movie would be popular. Steve Carrell had been popular somewhat from his role in Anchorman. And at that time, sex comedies did really well in theaters (for being rated 'R'). Wedding Crashers a few weeks earlier did really well. Both times, I debated with my manager about how we needed them in bigger theaters because they were going to be hits. Both times I was right, and the movies were both good.
So glad you put Napoleon Dynamite so high. One of my favorite movies of all time. Will be doing a Napoleon Tour in Preston, ID this summer.

I forgot about that movie. Will Farrell man, he's great. My sister made me watch Get Hard recently. They need a top 10 about him alone.
Gremlins two is the movie I always think of as unexpectedly funny. The building alone and its talking elevators are worth the watch.
You left out the biggest reason why 21 Jump Street was such a surprisingly good comedy: the show it was based off of was not a comedy. It was a show with a flimsy premise that mostly played it straight. That it was able to be converted into a campy comedy was a huge surprise. It’s the equivalent of following up the Tim Burton Batman movies with the Adam West show.
Game Night is INSANE. The characters are sociopaths
Galaxy Quest should be number one, that movie is a masterpiece .

Man I might be on my own with this one but I didn’t think Superbad was that funny! There are funny moments. Might have to rewatch that one

"Tropic thunders humor might not work today" Well, it's still funny so clearly the humor works. A major part of comedy is being able to laugh at yourself.
The humor definitely works still today. I also hate when people say garbage like, "I wouldn't be made today". Like we were somehow totally cool with blackface just a few years back but now everybody universally dislikes it? Nope, they went with that then because the outrage was so thunderous at that time.
It wouldn't work as well today, not because it wouldn't be funny, but because there would be so much controversy and backlash that people would cancel it without giving it a chance. It doesn't seem like that long ago that people understood that just because something feels offensive doesn't mean it's harmful and it's okay to laugh at the uncomfortable side of life. Now, if there's even a little controversy, people make a huge fuss and the echo chamber that is social media let's even the pettiest and most ridiculous issues become massive.
Pineapple Express & Knocked up could easily be up there too.
"Aim for the bush " literally put me in hospital due unable to breathing after laughing.... After that I had to be more serious to life.
How is Dumb and Dumber not #1 on this list? No one expected anything from it, and it’s literally one of the most quoted movies ever. Also, Caddyshack should be somewhere on the list.
Not sure those qualify. When they came out, Jim Carrey, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, and Chevy Chase were already household names.

All of these are some great comedy classics now that nobody can resist watching or laughing 😄😆 I cannot resist watching Napoleon Dynamite, Home Alone, Bridemaids, Mean Girls, The Others Guys or Superbad. I would. I will say this though Blockers really surprised me because I wasn’t expecting it to be so hilarious 😂😂

Keaton just KILLED it in Beetlejuice. When that came out I took a girl on one of our first dates to it and we laughed so hard I nearly puked in the popcorn and she almost peed herself.
On the last two days of school, I borrowed my brother's Napoleon Dynamite movie. I hadn't seen it, but turned it on for students if they wanted to watch. I had 4 classes throughout the day, and I watched the first half 4 times, and the next day, I watched the second half of the video for 4 class periods. The more I watched It , the more I laughed. It just got funnier and funnier the more I watched it. Just seeing the clip made me laugh again. I love the movie.

I was surprised by the film Confetti, which was a comedy about a wedding magazine putting on a competition for the most original themed wedding. Was actually really funny.

Galaxy Quest is a grossly underrated film. Superbly cast, fantastic script and, like the Brady Bunch movies, it was a gentle piss take while paying homage to fans of Sci Fi.
This is Spinal Tap is a big one for me
Great list! If I may add, even as Honorable Mentions:
1) Rat Race: underrated laugher headed by Breckin Meyer and Amy Smart, w/ a stacked cast that includes Jon Lovitz, Whoopi Goldberg and Rowan Atkinson, among others
2) Marley and Me: veers more drama than comedy but stands out on both with lots of heart
